(2019江西余江一中5月月考)Canada,the second biggest country in the world, has an area of about ten million square kilometres, covering most of the northern part of the North American continent and with an area larger than that of the United States. Canada lies to the southwest of Greenland. To the south, it reaches to the same latitude(纬度)as southern France. The distance from the Pacific coast in the west to the Atlantic in the east is greater than that from North America to Europe. But in spite of its size, two thirds of the population of Canada live in a narrow belt of land no more than 200 kilometres from the US border. In the southeast are the Great Lakes that lie on the border with the United States. These huge inland seas empty into the St Lawrence River, which links them with the Atlantic Ocean. The centre of government and finance is in Ontario. So are many of Canada’s industries.
Canada is a country of ten provinces and three territories (地区). The first inhabitants (居民)of Canada were North American Indians and the Inuit. France and Britain each governed Canada in the past. At that time the population of Canada was almost entirely the French, but in the next few decades, thousands of British colonists emigrated (移民)to Canada from the British Isles and from the American colonies. In 1849 the right of Canada to self-government was recognised. Today, 18 percent of Canadians still speak only French.
Canada is often called “A Land of the Future”. The country’s rich oil and mineral resources have hardly been touched. It is among the ten leading industrial nations in the world. Its capital is Ottawa and the largest city is Toronto. Other important cities include Montreal, Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Winnipeg, Hamilton, and Quebec.

It was a rainy day. I had no desire to drive up the winding mountain road to my daughter Carolyn’s house. But she had insisted that I come to see something at the peak of the mountain.
So here I was, although unwilling to make the two-hour journey through mist and rain. After lunch,my daughter requested me to drive her to Barage. After a ten-minute drive,we parked the car and got out. We walked along a path that was thick with old pine needles. Huge black green evergreens towered over us. Gradually the peace and silence of the place began to fill my mind. Then we turned a corner and stopped—and I gasped in amazement.
From the peak of the mountain to the slopes and valleys were rivers of daffodils(水仙)in full bloom. A sea of amazing colors, was like a carpet before us. It looked as though the sun had tipped over and spilled gold down the mountainside. At the center hung a waterfall of purple hyacinths. Here and there were breathtaking tulips.

As we approached home, we saw a sign that read “ Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking. ” The first answer was: “One Woman—Two Hands, Two Feet, and Very Little Brain/’ The second was: “One at a Time. ” The third: “Started in 1958. ”
I was so moved by what we had seen. “ She changed the world,” I said, not getting over the shock. “ One bulb (球莲)at a time. She started almost 40 years ago. It was probably just the beginning of an idea, but she kept at it. ”
“Imagine,” I added,“ if I had a vision and worked at it, just a little bit every day, what might I have accomplished ”
Carolyn looked sideways at me, smiling. “Start tomorrow,” she said, “better yet, start today. ”

How to Bring Our Community Together
Canada is a nation that prides itself on multiculturalism and the opportunity. 1 Building social connections and a sense of belonging brings people together in ways that strengthen individual relationships as well as the whole community.
There are several things that we can do to develop strong social connections and a sense of belonging :
2 One of the simplest ways to bring a community together is through shared experiences. Events like an international food festival,a sports league featuring activities from around the world, and health and wellness programs drawing on different cultures, are excellent ways of bringing people together.
Think outside the box. 3 Many of us get caught up in our own routines and practices and forget that there are other ways of doing things. Try talking to different community members, ranging from youths to seniors, to understand their opinions of the world. 4
Try new things. Positively influencing our community can go beyond volunteering our time and resources. Consider getting involved in our community by working for the 2017 Census(人口普查)as an enumerator (普查员)or a crew leader. Census enumerators are responsible for identifying dwellings on maps, conducting personal interviews, and following up respondents in person and by phone, while crew leaders are responsible for leading, training and supervising a team of enumerators. 5 .
A strong feeling of unity in a community can make residents feel comfortable and at home.
A. Plan community events.
B. Encourage community members to do some community service work.
C. Social connections offer community members chances to know each other better.
D. Our multicultural tradition provides a welcoming environment for individuals and families.
E. Learning about different cultures and practices can open our mind to a whole new way of life.
F. Invite individuals of different cultures to participate in community planning to ensure that every voice is heard.
G. These positions provide an opportunity to meet new people and build relationships with members of our community.
