When choosing a gym one should look at some of the things that are important. Some gyms have too many members that attend, and that can cause a problem because no one wants to wait for a machine. Few facilities only offer members to come in during normal business hours ; therefore, several people will not be able to work out as much. A good fitness center has only few members, after-hours access, and equipment that is well-maintained.
First,a good quality fitness center is one that is not overcrowded. If a gym is overcrowded during the time one goes, then it may not be enjoyable. Some people go on their lunch breaks to work out, but if they have to wait around 10 to 15 minutes for a machine, then they wasted their lunch break and time.
Second,a workout center should offer members a key to get in after hours. Considering some people do workout different times throughout the day,it is more suitable for those to be able to go when they are able to fit it into their schedule and not the gyms.
Third, the quality of the equipment is most important. No one wants to work out on the machines if they have not been taken care of. If someone gets on a machine and it starts making a lot of noise, then that would be distracting to the other members.
In fact, there are a lot of different kinds of fitness centers in America. People have to decide what they prefer to the others. For me it is important that a gym I attend doesn’t have a whole lot of members because Fm an impatient person. In addition, it is imperative that the owners keep up with routine maintenance on their equipment because I don’t want to be hurt while working out.

A. What to consider when choosing a gym.
B. What gym to be considered as the best quality.

D. What to take with you when going to a gym.
5. If too many people are keen on the same gym__________.
A. it shows the gym has the best teachers and equipment
B. it means they will waste much time in the gym
C. it implies they can make more friends there
D. it indicates they can work out in a full way
6. The example of some people who go to a gym during their lunch breaks is used to show that__________.
A. an overcrowded gym is great
B. an overcrowded gym can waste much time
C. some people only have spare time during their lunch breaks
D. some people like to work out during their lunch breaks
7. If you are an owner of a gym__________.

Painkillers (止痛药)are turning out to be a real pain, according to a new study in the British Medical Journal. Taking them for just a week can increase your risk of a heart attack by 50% . The research suggested that the risk related to the use of certain drugs was greatest with higher doses (剂量)and during the first month of use. The potential risk may increase by 75% for medicines like ibuprofen(布洛芬)and naproxen(蔡普生), and more than 100% for rofecoxib(罗非昔布).
It all sounds bad but your risk is very low—one in a million. A 100% increase means you still only have a two-in-a-million chance. Of course, all painkilling medications that work can have side effects—nothing is safe and effective. Paracetamol (扑热息痛)has very few unless taken too much, in which case it can cause serious liver danger, but it isn’t very effective. Drugs like opiates are strong painkillers but easy to be addicted to and often have other bad effects. Maybe you find that you are in a dilemma now. But don’t despair; you can refer to a pain clinic for some professional guidance. For ongoing pain, music and exercise may be the best choices to help you reduce the feeling of it.
Scientists at Harvard have recently done a quite horrible study on mice. They made the mice experience extremes of hot and cold, applied pressure to their back legs and injected the capsaicin(辣椒素)into their feet. And then they timed how long it took them to respond to the pain. Lack of sleep increased the discomfort, while stimulants (兴奋剂)such as caffeine made them less responsive to pain. It has been widely reported that a good night’s sleep and a cup of coffee in the morning may help reduce pain. But anyway, don’t throw the pills away because the study also shows taking small doses of drugs in short periods of time can be effective and safe as long as your heart is in good condition.
8. Which of the following painkillers has fewest side effects
A. Ibuprofen. B. Naproxen.
C. Rofecoxib. D. Paracetamol.
9. What does the underlined word “despair” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Take it seriously.
B. Take any risk.
C. Lose hope.
D. Feel doubtful.
10. The example of mice is used to show that__________.
A. mice can stand extreme pressure
B. good sleep and coffee may decrease pain
C. legs and feet are more sensitive to pain
D. capsaicin and stimulants can help reduce pain
11. What is the text mainly about
A. How to stop taking painkillers.
B. A new way of reducing pain.
C. The risk of taking painkillers.
D. How to avoid painkillers’ side effects.

As more and more people speak the global languages of English, Chinese,Spanish, and Arabic, other languages are rapidly disappearing. In fact, half of the 6,000 -7,000 languages spoken around the world today will likely die out by the next century, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization( UNESCO).
In an effort to prevent language loss, scholars from a number of organizations—UNESCO and National Geographic among them—have for many years been documenting dying languages and the cultures they reflect.
Mark Turin, a scientist at the Macmillan Center, Yale University, who specializes in the languages and oral traditions of the Himalayas, is following in that tradition. His recently published book, A Grammar of Thangmi with an Ethnolinguistic Introduction to the Speakers and Their Culture, grows out of his experience living, working, and raising a family in a village in Nepal.
Documenting the Thangmi language and culture is just a starting point for Turin, who seeks to include other languages and oral traditions across the Himalayan reaches of India,Nepal, Bhutan, and China. But he is not content to simply record these voices before they disappear without record.
At the University of Cambridge Turin discovered a wealth of important materials—including photographs, films, tape recordings, and field notes—which had remained unstudied and were badly in need of care and protection.
Now,through the two organizations that he has founded—the Digital Himalaya Project and the World Oral Literature Project—Turin has started a campaign to make such documents, found in libraries and stores around the world, available not just to scholars but to the younger generations of communities from whom the materials were originally collected. Thanks to digital technology and the widely available Internet, Turin notes, the endangered languages can be saved and reconnected with speech communities.
12. Many scholars are making efforts to__________.
A. promote global languages
B. rescue disappearing languages
C. search for language communities
D. set up language research organizations
13. What does the phrase “that tradition” in Paragraph 3 refer to
A. Having full records of the languages.
B. Writing books on language teaching.
C. Telling stories about language users.
D. Living with the native speakers.
14. What is Turin’s book based on
A. The cultural studies in India.
B. The documents available at Yale.
C. His language research in Bhutan.
D. His personal experience in Nepal.
15. Which of the following best describes Turin’s work
A. Write, sell and donate.
B. Record,repair and reward.
C. Collect, protect and reconnect.

Excited screams of joy, the sounds of two happy little girls playing in the sand, rang across the beach. But I walked along, barely aware of it. I’d come to this remote beach on my sailboat, a place to escape. My wife and I had recently separated. Our marriage was in trouble. I worried about my two boys, just six and eight. It seemed like forever since I’d heard them laugh. But I didn’t know what to do to make things better.
“Help! Help!” the girls shouted. I’d meant to tell them to stay away from the dangerous water. Now one of them was in the ocean, beyond the surf line. I could just hear her screams over the waves. Any second now she,d be swept away. I ran across the sand as fast as I could. The other girl was at the edge of the surf line, yelling.
“Wait! Stop! Don,t go any farther!” I charged into the waves and was reaching for her when a wall of water dashed over us. For half a second I saw her disappear under another big wave. Fm a strong swimmer, but I could feel the wave pulling me hard. I swam to her and seized her. Her little body was shaking and trembling. But where is the other girl I saw a waving arm. A head broke the surface, not far away. The arms of the girl I’d rescued were wrapped desperately around my neck. She was breathing with sobs. “Let go of my neck. I need you on my back. Hold my shoulders so I can swim to your friend. ”
She loosed her hands and I shifted her to my back. “She’s my sister, Sarah, and I am Lillian,” she said. For a moment I thought of my boys. How much they loved each other. How much I loved them.
I looked across the water and saw a small head after a big wave. I quickened my swimming, fighting for each breath. Tiny arms pressed against my shoulder. I reached out and held the second little girl. She was in total tiredness, taking deep breaths, crying quietly.
