FOUR OF THE WORLD’S HAPPIEST CITIES
Dan Buettner set out to find the happiest places on earth, and he thinks he’s discovered four on four different continents. If you’re looking for a cheerful destination for your next vacation, consider these four spots.
Being one of the most crowded cities in the world and citizens known for being workaholics, it’s hard to imagine Singapore having one of the happiest populations on earth. And yet in a recent survey, 95%o of them said they were very happy. They give their city high marks for cleanliness and safety-subways are neat and unfailingly arrive on time, and police are seen as helpful and good at their jobs. what’s more, they feel they can count on their neighbors.
The residents of Aarhus cheerfully pay 68% of their income in taxes, knowing that in return will be guaranteed free healthcare, free daycare, and a top education for their children. A city of 300, 000 with an exciting cultural scene, the sense of community and equality, as well as easy access to the nearby sea and the surrounding countryside, make Aarhus seem more like a small town.
People of san Luis Obispo are more likely than residents of other U. S. cities to smile and experience joy and are less likely to experience pain or depression. Some 64, 000 of the 260, 000 people volunteer at over 11, 000 non-profit organizations. “Quick access makes it easy to be involved,” resident Pierre Rademaker told Buettner.
Unlike San Luis Obispans, the people of Monterrey don’t enjoy high household(家庭)incomes or access to good healthcare. Instead, with their faith in God and family, they are able to tough it out through bad times. “We laugh at sickness, poverty and even death,” says Basanez. “We even have a holiday to celebrate death. Cruz Genet, 11, and Anthony Skopick, 10 couldn’t agree whether the birds out on the ice were ducks or geese. So on a cold January evening last year, the two friends ventured(冒险) into the frozen pond near their homes in Frankfort, Illinois, to get a better look. “First, we threw a rock onto the ice to test it,” Cruz told NBC 5 Chicago. “Then we stepped on it.” Convinced the ice would hold their weight, Anthony took a few steps, but then he fell through the seemingly frozen surface.
Cruz rushed to help his panicked friend. However, the pond swallowed him, too. Cruz managed to lift himself out of the extremely cold water and onto a more solid section. He then gingerly worked his way toward Anthony. But the ice didn’t hold, and he fell in again. This time, he couldn’t get out.
The boys were in icy water up to their necks and quickly losing feeling. Any chance of their freeing themselves was slipping away. Cruz was sure that he was going to die.
Anthony’s older sister had seen the boys fall through the ice and started screaming, wishing someone to save them.
John Lavin,a neighbor driving nearby on his way to the grocery store, heard her. He quickly pulled over. Seeing the boys,he grabbed a nearby lifebuoy(救生圈),kicked off his shoes, and ran into the cold water, struggling his way through the ice. Lavin made his way to Cruz and Anthony and pulled them back to land.
The boys were taken to the hospital, where doctors discovered that their five-minute stay in the water had lowered their body temperature nearly ten degrees. Fortunately, they have fully recovered, though they are still a little amazed by their fearless neighbor. “Just to think,” said Cruz. “if he hadn’t been there, I could have died.”

Do you live in a city? You’ve probably noticed how noisy and crowded life in a city can be. What if you could live next to a calm lake instead?
As it turns out, living near bodies of water—lakes, rivers, ponds, even oceans-can help us feel both happier and healthier. Those who live less than a kilometer from the coast are around 22 percent less likely to have mental health problems than those who live 50 kilometers or more away, according to a study by researchers from the University of Exeter, the UK People who visit the coast at least twice a week tend to experience better general and mental health as well.
So how does “blue” space make us feel better? For one thing, aquatic environments tend to have less pollution and more sunlight, both of which are linked to better mental and physical health. People who get more sun tend to be happier than those who do not.
There’s also the air above the sea. After spending time near the ocean, you might find that you feel more relaxed than usual. This is because sea air is filled with negative ions(负离子).These ions balance our levels of serotonin(血清素),a chemical that affects our moods. With balanced serotonin levels, we feel more calm and relaxed according to the Daily Mail.
Finally, people who live near water tend to be more physically active, according to the Guardian. Water sports like swimming and rowing can help us stay in shape, which in turn keeps us healthy.
8.What do the researchers from the University of Exeter find?
A. Living near water can improve our mental health.
B. An increasing number of people don’t like living in cities.
C. Living near water has more advantages than living in cities.

10. What do we know about negative ions
A. They are chemicals in our body.
B. They can only be found in sea air.
C. They can help people reduce stress.
D. They increase serotonin in our body.

A. Health.

Last week the British university system offered a record number of places. That sounds like good news-but do we really need more people to go to university For that matter, does the world need more universities
The answer feels like it should be yes.
Education is good, isn’t it But everything has a cost.
Education takes time. We could insist that everyone study full-time until the age of 45 but that would surely be too much. And perhaps half the population studying until they’re 21 is also too much. As for universities, they consume financial and intellectual resources-perhaps those resources might be better spent elsewhere.
My own personal opinion is strongly in favour both of going to university, and of simply having universities around.
The main skill I learnt at university was to write about economics, and I use that skill every day in my professional life, even an abstract education seems practical to me. And I now live in Oxford, one of the world’s most celebrated(著名的)university cities. Oxford’s experience certainly suggests that universities have much to offer.
The city’s architecture and green spaces have been shaped--greatly for the better,on balance-by the 900-year-old institution at its heart. The beauty attracts tourists and locals too.
But these are samples of one. Many people do not find themselves using the skills and knowledge they accumulated at university. And Oxford’s dreaming spires(顶尖) aren’t terribly representative of global universities as a whole.
12. Which of the following is the most proper title
A. Does the world need more universities
B. Is education really necessary
C. Is the British university system the best
D. Do you prefer universities abroad
13. Which of the following about the writer is TRUE
A. He is an economist now.
B. He likes Oxford’s architecture and green spaces most.
C. The skill he learnt at university is practical in his career.
D. He holds the view that going to university is a waste of resources.
14. The writer develops the passage by _____.
A. comparing his experience with others’
B. persuading us with his own experience and opinion
C. describing and sharing his own university experience
D. informing us of the advantages of universities
15. In the following part, the writer is likely to _____.
A. list more supporting details about his opinion
B. show more disadvantages about going to university
C. present some opposite opinions about universities
D. draw a conclusion about the topic

Imagine that you are in a remote village somewhere with no medical clinic. 16 Once the doctors get to you, they examine you and take blood samples, but they won’t be able to help you until they take the samples back to the hospital to find out what is wrong. 17 Thanks to engineer Andy Ozcan, many people may never be in this situation. He has invented an app that turns your mobile phone into a diagnostic(诊断的)tool.
Ozcan’s invention is important because it is very accurate and easy to use. In many remote places, even if doctors have microscopes and other instruments to help them make diagnoses, there may still be other problems. Many doctors, for example, don’t have enough training to accurately interpret what they see. 18 With Ozcan’s mobile phone app, health workers can take a special photo of a blood sample and send it to a central computer at a hospital. The computer will then automatically interpret the photo and send a diagnosis back in a few minutes.
19 His technology only requires a mobile phone and an Internet connection. As more than four billion people already have cell phones, the cost of establishing the diagnostic system is fairly low.
By inventing a medical tool that uses existing technology, Ozcan has developed a medical tool that is both practical and economical. Therefore, it can be effectively almost anywhere. 20
A. As a result, they may diagnose illnesses incorrectly.
B. People are trying to reduce the cost of this new medical tool.
C. This tool has become much more popular all around the world.
D. Another reason why Ozcan’s invention is important is that it is inexpensive.
E. Ozcan’s simple and effective tool might just save millions of lives around the world.
F. Even though you may only have a simple infection, you might die because of the delay.
G. You become very sick and must wait days until a mobile medical unit arrives to help.

One day,Ali took Zahra’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. Zahra’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. 38. simply 考查副词。句意:只有三个步骤。设空处修饰系动词are,应使用副词,故用 simply。
39.In 考查介词。句意:通过这种方式,它可以保持血液流向大脑、心脏和其他器官。in this way为固定短语,意为“通过这种方式”。
42. have been completed/are completed

One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this point, he jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. He dashed across the finish line and won fourth prize. Thinking he would let her sister down, Ali couldn’t help sobbing. Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that he won third prize as the runner who collided with him was disqualified for breaking the rule. Holding the shoes close to his chest during the award ceremony, Ali felt overjoyed and relieved as he eventually won the shoes for his sister.
Paragraph 2:
Filled with pleasure, Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Ali found Zahra was waiting outside. Nervous and anxious, Zahra wondered whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting. “Zahra, see what I have got for you,” Ali said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Zahra saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Ali. “Thank you! Ali.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and the sister hugged tightly together.
