教学过程
Step I 学习理解
活动一:Research
Ask students to search the Internet and get some knowledge about different ways of first aid.
(1)Bleeding
·Position the injured person properly and keep the injured limb elevated(except for fracture victims).
·Inspect the wound, flush with distilled water, exert direct pressure by hand over a dressing, and bandage the wound.
·Do not bandage the wound too tightly that obstruct normal blood circulation to the injured limb.
·Leave the impaled objects and protruding bones in place and protect the injured from further movement.
·Exert direct pressure on the edge of the wound to stop bleeding.
·Recheck blood circulation of the injured limb after bandaging.
(2)Nosebleed
·Sit the injured down with his head leaning forward.
·Ask the injured to breathe with his mouth, forcefully pinch the soft part below his nasal bone and apply a cold dressing to the forehead.
·Ask the injured not to swallow the blood lodged in his throat.
·Loosen his tight clothing.
·If bleeding continues after pinching the nose for 10 minutes, continue to do so for another 10 minutes.
·If bleeding still continues, send the injured to the hospital at once.
(3)Heatstroke
To avoid heatstroke, you should halt strenuous activity in hot and humid weather. If you are still determined to go outdoors, you should:
·wear light loose-fitting clothing.
·rest in a cool place as often as possible.
·replenish your bodily fluids by regularly drinking electrolyte drinks or fruit juice.
You should also avoid alcoholic beverages under such circumstances.
(4)Broken bones
·Stay Safe! The patient was injured somehow. Don’t get hurt the same way. Follow universal precautions and wear personal protective equipment if you have it.
·If the foot or hand at the end of the injured extremity is cold or blue, call 120 immediately!
·DO NOT straighten the extremity if it is deformed—keep it in the position found.
·Stabilize the extremity. Use padding to keep it immobile. Specific broken bones need specific treatment.
·Put ice on the injury. Never put the ice directly on the skin—put it in a bag first with a layer of cloth between the bag and the skin. After holding ice on the injury for about 20 minutes, take it off for 20 minutes.
·Elevate the extremity to reduce swelling.
(5)Burn
·Flush the burnt area with cool running water for several minutes.
·Call 120 for a severe burn.
·Apply a burn ointment or spray for pain.
Minor burns can be treated with a topical burn ointment or spray to reduce pain. Ointments should be water-soluble.
·Do not apply butter or oil to any burn. Butter or lard may feel cool because it comes out of the refrigerator, but the oils will trap heat and make the burn deeper over time.
·Cool the burn
Stop the burning process by running the burn under cool water for at least five minutes. Do not use ice to cool a burn as it can lead to further injury and hypothermia. Avoid spraying burns with high pressure, just let the water run over the burnt area for as long as you can. If an ambulance is coming, don’t stop cooling the burn with running water until the ambulance arrives.

活动二:Make an instruction leaflet
Ask students to work in groups and make an instruction leaflet for giving first aid for an emergency. Include illustrations for any points that are not clear.

活动三:Make your own first-aid kit
1. Brainstorming.
Ask students to work in groups and discuss:
·What should be included in a first-aid kit
·How the items in the first-aid kit should be used, and in which emergencies they should be used
Suggested answers:
·This portable first-aid kit is made of durable material with a handle, which is easy to carry. Bag in colour can be printed differently according to your choice.

2. Collect the items and put them in a box or container that is easy to store and find. In most cases, the items for a first-aid kit can be bought cheaply at a pharmacy.
3. Draw up an information sheet to go in the first-aid kit. It should include emergency phone numbers, a list of the items, and an explanation of how to use the item. Use the table below to help you.

Ask students to present their first-aid kit to the class, and introduce and explain the use of each item.
Step Ⅲ 迁移创新
活动四:Make a PPT or a poster for the presentation
Ask students to choose 3~4 classmates to make a new group. Make a PPT or a poster, and prepare some questions for their report.
活动五:Make a presentation
Ask students to pull everything together to make a presentation to the class, where the key aspects of the first-aid kit will be explained by different members of the group.
活动六:Vote
The class should then vote on the best first-aid kit.
【设计意图】通过查找资料,小组讨论,制作PPT或海报,再组织语言,小组展示报告,推选优秀的报告全班分享,这本身就是语言学习和创造的过程。通过这个活动,不仅可以引发学生的思考和对本单元话题的兴趣,而且激发学生用英语表达的愿望和信心,促进他们更好地学习。
