When it comes to medical care, many patients and doctors believe “more is better”. But what they do not realise is that overtreatment—too many scans, too many blood tests, too many procedures—may bring harm. Sometimes a test leads you down a path to more and more testing, some of which may be attacking, or to treatment for things that should be left out.
Terrence Power, for example, complained that after his wife learned she had Wegener’s disease, an uncommon disorder of the immune system (免疫系统), they found it difficult to refuse testing recommended by her doctor. The doctor insisted on office visits every three weeks, even when she was feeling well. He frequently ordered blood tests and X-rays, and repeatedly referred her to experts for even minor complaints. Even when tests came back negative, more were ordered, and she was hospitalized as prevention when she caught a cold. She had as many as 25 doctor visits during one six-month period. The couple was spending about $30, 000 a year for her care.
After several years of physical suffering and near financial ruin from the medical costs, the couple began questioning the treatment after discussing with other patients in online support groups. “It’s a really hard thing to determine when doctors have crossed the line,” Mr Power said. “You think she’s getting the best care in the world, but after a while you start to wonder: What is the purpose ” Mr Power then spoke with his own primary care doctor, who advised him to find a new expert to oversee Mrs Power’s care. Under the new doctor’s care, the regular testing stopped and Mrs Power’s condition was stable. Now she sees the doctor only four or five times a year.
4. Which of the following was a problem for Mrs Power during her medical treatment
A. She had to be hospitalized for three weeks whenever she had a cold.
B. Her doctor asked her to consult other experts for her complaints.
C. When test results showed she was fine, her doctor still ordered more tests.
D. She did not have any insurance, so she became penniless.
5. When did the Powers start to doubt the treatment of Mrs Power
A. After they knew about the treatment of other patients.
B. After they analyzed the results of her blood tests.
C. After Mrs Power was cured of her illness.
D. After the new expert tested her.

A. Not getting worse.
B. Improper.
C. Unchangeable.
D. Uncertain.
7. What is the main idea of this passage

C. Doctors generally recommend office visits that are necessary.
D. Too much medical care may not be beneficial to patients.

Being fat is a non-stop fight between not being noticed and attracting much notice. Sometimes you want to be accepted; instead, you’ re singled out and judged. In 2015, when I became the first plus-size designer to win Project Runway, I hoped it would be a moment not only for inclusive fashion, but also for all other fat human beings out there. It wasn’t just me who had won; we had won. Many women told me they were afraid to wear bright colours or show off their arms until they saw me doing it. But some of the words on the Internet were terrible: “Why did they pick that fat designer ” “How can she encourage such an unhealthy lifestyle ” My positive psychology was affected. I got sad and negative and put on more weight. I reached a point where I couldn’t climb stairs without losing my breath.
I finally realised that if I didn’t take care of myself, I couldn’t keep doing what I loved, so I went to see a doctor and started doing exercise every day. After that I got more judgements, this time from people in the fat group who once supported me. They turned their backs on me and said, “You can’t be body positive and still losing weight.” I thought, “Well, why not I wasn’t trying to be ‘prettier’; I wanted to have control of my life.”
Size should not divide us, whether we are fat, thin, or anywhere in the between. I’m designing clothes for plus women, but one day I might be open to designing straight (直筒型的) sizes. People judge me for that, too. But I just want to create clothes that make people feel good. I want every woman to love herself and go after her dreams like I did.
8. What was the author’s hope after she won Project Runway
A. People would look up to her.
B. Other fat people would share her pride.
C. The clothes she designed would sell well.
D. Fat people would lead the fashion industry.
9. What did the author do after she saw the words on the Internet
A. She lost interest in fashion.
B. She lost control of her body.
C. She stopped wearing bright colours.
D. She decided to have a healthy lifestyle.
10. What was fat people’s attitude to the author when she started losing weight
A. Dissatisfied.
B. Uninterested.
C. They laughed at her.
D. They couldn’t believe it.
11. In which part of a newspaper might this passage appear
A. Environment.
B. Medicine.
C. Career.
D. Entertainment.

Before uploading a photo of ourselves to social media, chances are that we’ll use an app to smooth our skin, make our eyes look bigger, and lips fuller. With a couple of taps on our mobile phone, we can get a quick fix and present the “best” version of ourselves to the world. However, the problem is, when we simply edit our imperfections away, we’re also changing the way we look at ourselves.
Last month, researchers published the article Selfies-Living in the Era of Filtered (过滤的) Photographs. The article analysed photo editing apps’ bad influences on people’s self-respect and their possibility to cause appearance anxieties. The researchers also warned that such apps make it difficult to tell the difference between reality and fantasy. “These apps allow one to change his or her appearance in minutes and follow an unrealistic standard of beauty,” the article reads.
In the past, people may have compared their looks to those of famous people. But for today’s young people, beauty standards are most likely set by what they see on social media. “From birth, they are born into an age of social platforms where their feelings of self-worth can be based purely on the number of likes and followers that they have, which is linked to how good they look,” British cosmetic doctor Tijion Esho told The Independent. This is why many young people suffer an identity trouble when it comes to appearance.
“Now you’ve got this daily comparison of your real self to this fake self that you present on social media,” Renee Engeln, a professor of psychology, told the HuffPost website. Engeln further pointed out that when people spend too much time making such comparisons, they may become “beauty sick” and find it difficult to accept what they actually look like. “Because between you and the world is a mirror. It’s a mirror that travels with you everywhere. You can’t seem to put it down,” she told The Washington Post. So when we look in a real mirror, we shouldn’t think to ourselves, “Do I look as good as myself in the filtered photos ” Instead, we should think, “I feel good; I have my health.”
12. Before uploading a photo to social media, we will probably ________.
A. have an operating to make our eyes look bigger
B. use some cream to smooth our skin
C. use an app to fix our photo
D. edit our perfections away
13. What can we learn from Paragraph 2
A. In many ways, photo editing apps are beneficial to people.
B. Photo editing apps are likely to cause people’s anxieties about their appearance.
C. Photo editing apps can make people more beautiful.
D. Photo editing apps help people judge realistic beauty.
14. When it comes to appearance, why do many young people suffer an identity trouble
A. Because they compare their looks to those of famous people.
B. Because beauty standards are set by social media.
C. Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their own likes and dislikes.
D. Because their feelings of self-worth depend on their appearance.
15. According to Engeln, what should we do
A. We should feel good about what we actually look like.
B. We should spend more time making comparison of our real self to fake self.
C. We should take a mirror with us everywhere.
D. We should try to look as good as ourselves in the filtered photos.

My spines (刺) are thick, my leaves are tough, and my skin is uneven. I can’t offer shade or juice to the passing travellers. I don’t see that I am of any use at all. All it did was stand in the sun day after day, growing taller and fatter. Its spines grew longer and its leaves grew tougher. It truly was strange-looking.
“I wish I could do something useful,” it sighed. By day, hawks (鹰) circled high overhead, and the cactus called, “What can I do with my life ” Whether they heard or not, the hawks flew away. At night the moon floated into the sky and cast its pale light on the desert floor. “What can I do with my life ” the cactus called. The moon only stared coldly as it continued its course.
A lizard (蜥蜴) passed by, leaving a little trail in the sand with its tail. “What worthy deed can I do ” the cactus called. “You ” the lizard smiled, pausing a moment. “You can do something. Just wait for the right moment. The hawks circle their ways overhead, making beautiful patterns for us all to admire. The moon hangs high like a lantern at night, so we can see our ways home to our loved ones. Even I, the lowly lizard, have something to do. I decorate the sands with these beautiful trails as I pull my tail along. And you, you will show us your beauty some day.”

第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1
It went on year after year, and the cactus grew old. It cried out, “I have wondered so long, and I have tried so hard. I just want to do something useful. I fear that now it’s too late.” But just then, the cactus felt a strange change, and it knew a kind of joy that it had never had would approach. At its top, a beautiful flower suddenly appeared, like a shiny crown. It didn’t look strange-looking any more.
Paragraph 2
The desert hadn’t known such a flower of it. Its pleasant smell spread into the air far and wide and brought happiness to all passers-by. The passing travellers, including the butterflies, stopped to admire its beauty. So did the hawks. And that night, even the moon smiled when it found such a treasure. The lizard said to the cactus, “You have tried your best to wait for the right moment. Your heart trying to do good things will always bring something worthwhile to the world, even for a moment.”
