Li Meixi, 12, a girl from Chengdu, Sichuan, is ashamed of her common clothes. She is also afraid that people will think she is out of style. What Li is experiencing is fashion worry. It worries many people today.
A big reason for fashion worry is the misuse of fashion power. As fashion magazines advertisements and heroes show off the “latest and greatest” trends. People especially teenagers will follow.
Another reason some people might have fashion worry is that they are short of a sense of self-identity (自我认同感), said the Paper. They care about how fashionable people look at them actually because they are not confident enough.
Fashion trends come and go, always changing. Instead of rushing to follow a trend, the key is to find your own style. A set of clothes is just a part of your image. It can’t tell the truth. What also matters is your personality and abilities.

They are so fashionable that I feel like they are going to rap a song at any second. But this doesn’t worry me too much. I think being comfortable is the most important thing.
Xiao Yin, 11, Wuhan

Bertie was sad for weeks, months after the lion died. There was nothing I could do to cheer him or even console(安慰) him. He would sit for hours in his room, or go off on long walks all on his own. He seemed to shut away inside himself, so distant. Try as I did, I could not reach him.
①Then one day I was in the kitchen here, when I saw him hurrying down the hill, waving his stick and shouting for me. “I’ve got it,” he cried. as he came in, “I’ve got it at last.” He showed me the end of his stick. It was white. “See that, Millie ” “Chalk! It’s chalk underneath, isn’t it ”
“So ” I said.
“You know the famous White Horse on the hillside at Uffington, the one they carved out of the chalk a thousand years ago That horse never died, did it It’s still alive, isn’t it Well, that’s what we’re going to do, so he will never be forgotten. We’ll carve The White Prince out on the hillside—he’ll be there forever, and he’ll be white forever too.”
“It’ll take a bit of time, won’t it ” I said.
“We’ve got plenty, haven’t we ” he replied, with the same smile he had smiled at me when he was a ten-year-old boy asking me if he could come back and mend my kite for me.
② Every spare hour we had, we were up there scraping(刨土) away with spades(铲子), and we had buckets(桶) to carry away the earth. It was hard, back-breaking work, but it was a labour of love. We did it, Bertie and I, we did it together-paws, claws, tail, mane, until he was complete and perfect in every detail.
③It was just after we’d finished that the butterflies first came. We noticed that when the sun comes out after the rain, in the summer, the butterflies-Adonis Blues, they are, I looked them up-come out to drink on the chalk face. Then The White Prince becomes a butterfly lion, and breathes again like a living creature.

① British gourmet Fuchsia Dunlop’s posts (帖子) on Wechat or Instagram, serve up a diet of humor. Most of the posts are about her experience with food from around the world. But since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out in London in February, 2020, cooking has becoming a way for her to manage the “endless lockdown”. She says she cooks in a very relaxed way, going to the farmers’ market at the weekend to buy seasonal products for everyday cooking—a mixture of Jiangnan, Hunan, Guangdong, and Sichuan dishes.
②“For me, there are so many wonderful things about Chinese food. The thing that I find is greatest about it is that you can eat food that is both really delicious and incredibly healthy,” Dunlop says. “The Chinese are experts at cooking vegetables, so it is very easy for me to eat Chinese food almost every day.”
③ Growing up in Oxford, Dunlop dreamed of becoming a cook when she was little. However, her dream did not start to materialize until she came to Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, as a university student in 1994. That was when she began learning local cooking skills at the Sichuan Higher Institute of Cuisine.
④ Always keeping a notebook on hand wherever she went, she wrote down the recipes of the dishes she tasted. Based on her knowledge of Sichuan cuisine, Dunlop published her first book, Sichuan Cookery, in 2001, which was hailed by the Observer Food Monthly as “one of the top 10 cookbooks of all time”.
⑤ Since then, she has published four books about Sichuan cuisine, and one in 2016 about recipes from Jiangnan, called Land of Fish and Rice.
⑥Now, a Chinese version of Land of Fish and Rice, translated by He Yujia, is available. In the book, Dunlop displays her deep understanding of the food culture that runs deep in the blood of Chinese people.
⑦ Having studied Chinese food culture for nearly twenty years, she sees the Jiangnan area as the heartland of the nation’s gastronomy.
⑧“Although you have really interesting and delicious food all over China, in this area, especially, many people wrote about it and discussed it. Many of the old classic food books came from this area, for example. So if you talk about gastronomy, then Jiangnan is a really important area,” she says.

Gen Z(Z 世代) is the generation born between 1995 and 2010. As the first generation of digital natives(数码原住民), Gen Z is influencing and leading cultural trends(潮流)on social media.
After interviewing 1, 200 social network users aged between 13 and 24 in the US in October, Instagram, a photo and video sharing platform, has discovered some trends in 2022. Let’s take a look at two of them.

Growing up with more negative information about environmental pollution, young people have learned that it is important to live a green life.
Hunger for kitchen skills
The food hashtag(话题标签)has a bright future in social media in 2022. According to Instagram, Gen Z expects to find new recipes(配方)to test and improve their cooking skills.
One in six express their love for cooking at home. For them, enjoying life and improving its quality are on top of their life agenda. Over 5 million shared bikes in China are using services offered by Beidou Navigation Satellite System(北斗卫星导航系统). These shared bikes all use Beidou based positioning chips(芯片).
The chips have high qualities. They can deal with information accurately and quickly. They feature low power consumption. They provide a better user experience and easier management for the local companies. Now, several new models of shared electric bikes with Beidou-based chips have also started to be produced and put into market. Besides positioning and navigation, the chips will help users and bike companies record user speed and battery condition of an electric bike. The possible crimes during the bike using will also be recorded.
In fact, years ago, shared bike companies began to use positioning chips which worked well with both GPS and Beidou services. After the Beidou system became fully in use in the summer of 2020, shared bike companies started installing Beidou-based chips on more bikes in more areas. The latest chips which are popular with bike companies are smaller and have more advantages over the old types.

Nils was a very naughty little boy. He went to school in winter, and looked after the farm animals when it was summer. He was very naughty. Sometimes he chased the swans and when he caught them, he pulled their feathers off. The swans were all very afraid of him.
One day Nils was studying at home when suddenly he fell asleep. When he woke up, he saw in the mirror—a tiny Nils! He had become only a little thumb toy figure!
But once he opened the door, he found all of swans circling around them. They chased him. They pinched (掐) him and laughed and said, “Now it is time for you to fear us!”
Then the wild swans flew in and saw their ancestors and said, “Hey, come on! Let us all go to beautiful Switzerland!”
A male swan named Max heard the wild swans, so he scooped up high into the sky. Nils found this good chance to experience new things, and held on tight to Max’s neck. They both flew high above into the sky. Nils was very scared, so he didn’t open his eyes at first. At last he got the courage to open his eyes and look down. He saw the white clouds high up the air, and saw the black earth under the ground.
Max’s energy left him behind, so he fell behind the group. Max flapped his wings quickly and quickly, but he still felt down and down. Nils was very worried, so at first he said, “Don’t worry, Max. You rest for a while and let’s go home!” Max liked his comfort, so he quickly caught up with the group.
The leader of the swans whose name was Oscar saw Nils and asked him, “Who are you ” Nils stood up and said: “My name is Nils. I was a human yesterday, but this morning…” Before Nils could finish his words, all the wild swans took a few steps back. Humans had been the swan’s enemy for centuries! No matter how hard Max tried to let Oscar agree to let Nils stay with them, Oscar still agreed to just let him stay with them for one night.
When they all slept snugly that night, a fox crept out behind a tree. He had kept his eyes on the wild swans for a while, and still thought of their delicious meat even as they slept. Oscar sensed this and told all the swans to get up and fly away to a safer place.
But Max left too quickly and dropped Nils down on the ground. Nils did not get hurt, but he did see the fox carrying the swan between his jaws. Nils shouted to him, “Hey, put the swan down!” He quickly grabbed the fox’s tail and pinched it with all his strength. This move allowed the fox to scream and so dropped the swan out of his mouth. Jamie Oliver, a lively British guy, loves to share his secrets. In his first television show, The Naked Chef, Oliver taught everyone to make simple but delicious food. In Jamies Kitchen, he taught young people how to prepare meals. His next show, Jamies School Dinners, is about changing the food that students eat.
Oliver saw that some schools in Britain were serving junk food—food that is easy to eat but unhealthy. Although it can be delicious, junk food is not very good for children. It is sometimes bad for their health because it doesn’t give them the energy they need at school. They sometimes can’t think well or feel down, and they sometimes put on weight.
Some of the junk foods that Oliver wants to change are canned spaghetti, chicken nuggets (鸡块),French fries, soda, and muffins (松饼). He encourages schools to serve fresh and healthy meats, vegetables, and fruits. He helps the school cooks to make healthy dinners without junk food.
People liked Oliver's idea of bringing high quality food to schools. Thousands enjoyed his television shows. But Oliver wanted them to do more than just watch. At his Feed Me Better website, he collected over 270,000 signatures from people. Oliver sent these signatures to British Prime Minister(首相). The post-1990s generation is often described as self-centered and always asking for help. However, research results have painted a different picture. The post-1990s generation is independent, strong-minded and hardworking, according to a Peking University report. When it comes to learning and working, over 60 percent think their own interests are more important than others’ opinions.
Most of them see successful businessmen as their idols. But it’s not because they are rich. “Their strong belief in themselves and never-give-up spirit have won the hearts of the generation,” the report said.
Moreover, the post-1990s generation has a strong sense of social responsibility (责任). Many of them have taken part in volunteer work. They also try to be responsible by studying hard and behaving online.
In the UK, many of the post-1990s generation have given up the drinking habits that the past generations had, The Telegraph noted. Most of them now have healthier hobbies, such as knitting and cooking. “It’s hard to find time for a hobby if you are going out drinking,” Kate Payne, author of The Hip Girl’s Guide to Homemaking, told The Telegraph. Changes in their hobbies have also helped them learn good manners. The 2013 Youth Justice Statistics Report in the UK showed that young people are less rude and noisy in public.
However, a generation’s characters don’t belong to every single person in it. “It’s what you do that can make you the kind of person you want to be,” said Cheng Dongfeng, director of the youth ideological and moral (思想政治) education center of West Anhui University.

Dear Audrey,
You are much older now, and hopefully wiser, although sometimes that’s not the case. You have probably forgotten about me.
I’m 12-year-old you feeling terribly nervous and stressed, hating online learning, in this horrible pandemic... I could go on and on. Does this bring any memory back to you
Anyway, maybe there are time machines in the time where you are, but there aren’t any here, so I’m doing the next best thing: I’m writing you a letter that I hope you read every year on New Year’s Day, or New Year’s Eve.
I’ve come from 2020 to remind you not to forget. I’m sitting on my bed right now, tears still on my face from a fight with my mom ( I love her more than anything or anyone, but we’ve spent too much time together), and aware of the light blue masks hanging on the hooks next to the door in my kitchen. In a way, it still feels like March, when this whole crazy thing started. I’m sick of it.
I am begging you to remember. I didn’t get to spend Thanksgiving with my beloved grandparents, when I’d been waiting so long to act normally(正常地) with them and pod up. Now, it looks like I won’t be spending Christmas with them normally either. In America (where I live), the Coronavirus numbers are higher than they’ve ever been. I am hoping and am going to pray (祈祷) for a Christmas miracle (奇迹), but I have my doubts because I hoped for an Easter miracle and that didn’t happen.
I am having a hard time and would do anything to get out of 2020 and this pandemic, to see my friends and family normally. You are able to do that. You have what I want so badly. So please, I strongly advise you to enjoy your life, your friends, your family, your experiences.
Remember — everything is replaceable and unimportant, but people are the only true thing that matter in this modern-day world.
Love your life, and be filled with joy this year.
Sincerely,
You, age 12, Audrey in 2020, the Pandemic Year.
