In 2017, besides a full-time job, I also coached two basketball teams. I remember the days when we had a quick meal in the car after work and tried to figure out which soccer game, basketball game, or family event we were driving towards. We just intentionally created family time to connect with each other.
One day when I finished a playhouse for the kids, three-year-old Matthew came and asked to help. “Sorry, kid, but I’m all done, ” I replied. “Oh no...”, cried Matthew. Now, any three-year-old crying after missing a project with their dad would be sweet. Crying Matthew looked like a newborn cat, melting a heart of stone. But what could I do I had finished the project and now I had to disappoint the little boy. Suddenly I realized, “he just wants to do any project with me. Just make one up!”
I caught two pieces of useless wood, “You see this wood here I need these two pieces of wood to be held together really tight. Can you help me ”
A slight smile was on his face, “Yes!”
The result was a pleased little boy whose heart was full. What I saw was two pieces of junk wood. What he saw was the connection with his father. He saw companionship, priority, worth and a place to belong to.
Parents always think, “I’ll create family time next Saturday. ” But you don’t always have to do big things to fill children’s hearts. In fact, the simple act of being present means the world to little hearts. Look at that face! Those are the eyes of a little one who received nothing. And everything.
24.Why did the family eat in the car after work
A.To avoid heavy traffic jams. B.To have extra basketball classes.
C.To remove the trouble of cooking. D.To have more time with family members.
25.What do we know about Matthew in Paragraph 2
A.He wanted to do projects with his dad.
B.He was disappointed with the playhouse.
C.He wanted to build the playhouse independently.
D.He was sad for missing the project assigned by school.
26.Which of the following words can best describe the author
A.Thoughtful and caring. B.Educated and strict.
C.Open-minded and generous. D.Efficient and patient.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.Looking After Kids Is Easy B.A Role Model for Kids Counts
C.Family Events Bring Us Together D.Balancing Work and Family Is Important

Vanessa Burchill, a 12-year-old Dartmouth, N. S. girl, is growing and giving away hundreds of young milkweed so endangered monarch butterflies have somewhere safe to land. Her plan to save the monarch butterflies began about three years ago when her aunt showed her a chrysalis from her garden. She watched in wonder as a butterfly appeared and made its wings dry.
She’s now given out about 1,000 baby milkweed plants to people in Halifax through her Downtown Dartmouth Monarch Project. Her first group of milkweed this spring went in a matter of hours.
Monarch butterflies can’t survive without milkweed because ifs the only plant where they can lay their eggs. Burchill grows wetland milkweed. It is far less controllable than common milkweed, its cousin. Common milkweed is considered a harmful weed in U.S. It is often killed by people with chemicals.
This year, Burchill’s growing season began in February with seeds from the Mersey Tobeatic Research Institute. Anyone can message her on Facebook to pick up a pot of milkweed for free. Each pot has four small plants that people are encouraged to put in a sunny place in their gardens.
“When the monarchs finally appear from the chrysalis they need to be able to dry out their wings in the sun and when the plant doesn’t have full sun they can’t do that.” Burchill said.
Burchill has also started growing a butterfly garden in the park across the street from her house with the help of parents and neighbors. “We’re very proud of her and she’s quite focused,” said her dad, Nick Burchill. ‘‘Hopefully, it will create a nice pathway for monarchs.”
Burchill has only seen a handful of monarchs visit her yard and she’s still waiting to see a caterpillar on the milkweed. But she knows what she did is paying off when she sees the endangered butterflies visiting gardens she helps grow.
28.What encouraged Burchill to save the monarch butterflies
A.Her monarch project. B.Her aunt’s suggestion.
C.Her research on the butterflies. D.Her experience in her aunt’s garden.
29.What can we learn from the second paragraph
A.Selling milkweed becomes a profitable business.
B.Milkweed baby plants grow very quickly in spring.
C.The project is widely welcomed by the local people.
D.Monarch butterflies can’t survive without milkweed.
30.Why does Burchill plant wetland milkweed
A.It provides the butterfly with enough water. B.It is much safer than common milkweed.
C.It is encouraged by the U.S. government. D.It grows everywhere in her hometown.
31.What is the attitude of Burchill’s father towards her action
A.Supportive. B.Uninterested. C.Doubtful. D.Worried.
D
Lots of animals play. But the behavior is best known in mammals (哺乳动物) and birds. Now the scientists at London’s Queen Mary University report that bumblebees (大黄蜂) know the same thing. But before this, there were no reports of insects playing.
Dr. Lars Chittka began to wonder if bumblebees played during an earlier test. In that test, Chittka guided bumblebees to move balls into a goal for food. He noticed that some bees were rolling (滚动) balls even when they weren’t given food. He wondered if they were playing.
To test the idea, the scientists at his lab set up a new test. First, they numbered 45 young bumblebees between one and 23 days old. The numbers let them follow bumblebees’ behavior. Then, they set up a clear pathway from the bumblebees’ home to a feeding area. On either side of the open pathway, the researchers placed small colored wooden balls. On one side of the path, the balls couldn’t move. On the other side, the balls could roll around. For three hours a day, over 18 days, the scientists opened the pathway between the home and the feeding area. The bumblebees never had to leave the pathway to find food, but they left anyway. They weren’t interested in the side where the balls didn’t move, but they made lots of visits to the side with the rolling balls.
Catching the balls with their legs, the bees would move their wings to pull on the balls, causing them to roll. The 45 numbered bumblebees did this 910 times during the test. Though some only did it once, others did it a lot. The younger ones liked to spend more time rolling balls while the older ones showed less interest in it. One bee was recorded rolling balls 44 times in a single day. One was seen rolling balls 117 times over the whole test.
The test raises important questions about how the insects’ minds work and whether they have feelings.
32.What did Chittka want to do about bumblebees in the earlier test
A.Discover if they played. B.Train them to move balls.
C.Make them learn to relax. D.Find out if they’d share food.
33.What did the scientists do to bumblebees before the new test
A.They named each of them. B.They let them interested in balls.
C.They had all of them go hungry. D.They marked them one by one.
34.What can we say about the older bumblebees’ behavior in the new test
A.They held their attention for longer. B.They understood simpler numbers.
C.They were less active in rolling balls. D.They helped the young pull on balls.
35.What’s the best title for the text
A.Bumblebees Are First Insects Known to Play B.Two Tests Prove Bumblebees Expect to Play
C.Bumblebees Are the World’s Smnartest Insects D.Scientists Make Bumblebees Work for Them

It was the last practice before the big gymnastics competition in Burlingville. The gymnastics team of Springtown High School had been training every day in the school vacation. They tried harder and wanted to do better. They had competed with the team from Maidstone High School several times. The competitions allowed the two teams to admire each other for their excellent performance and players’ qualities. They respected the game; they respected each other’s team more.
Today, the players of Springtown went home earlier. They would pack some food and water to have along the way to Burlingville. Before they went home, they went to their teacher to see their new uniform. Springton High School was in the countryside. The team made cookies and sold them at the market to get money to buy the uniform. They loved it very much, even though they were impressed with the uniforms of the team from Maidstone. Maidstone High School was a rich private school. It usually prepared two sets of uniforms for the competition — one for the morning and the other for the afternoon.
Early the next morning, the team of Springtown High School and their teacher got on a minibus to start their long trip. They would reach the railway station in Travers at about two o’clock and then take a train to Burlingville. They must be there by six o’clock and register for the competition.
The bus driver drove the bus through the country roads. Then suddenly, he parked the bus at the side of the road. There was something wrong with the engine. Unluckily, the driver couldn’t fix it in a short time. He called the company and asked them to send another bus for the gymnastics team. It was 90 minutes before another minibus came. Everyone jumped onto the bus. “Please hurry,” said the teacher.
When they finally arrived at Travers railway station, the bus driver helped the team carry the bags into the station. As soon as they got on the train, it started to move. Looking out of the window, the teacher saw the bus driver running towards the train door.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.开头已给出。
“Oh, no!” the teacher shouted. “The driver has our uniform bag!”

Caught in complete hopelessness, the team from Springtown saw the players of Maidstone walking towards them.

66.Dear Sir/Madam,
I’m Li Hua, a middle school student. The other day I happened to know from the Internet that an intelligent robot exhibition will be held in our city and some volunteers are needed. I’m quite interested in it and writing to apply for it.
As a teenager, I am outgoing, energetic, and responsible. Not only do I have great interest in robots, but also I have such a good command of English that I can communicate with others in English fluently. What’s more, I have had some similar working experiences before.
I do hope that I can be a volunteer in your exhibition. Looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
67.“Oh, no!” cried the teacher. “The driver has our uniform bag!” The students were very disappointed to see the bus driving away. They lost their new uniforms, which made them unable to wear uniforms to participate in the competition. Finally, the students reached Burlingville. The team sold the cookies they had made with the hope of buying new uniforms again. But the money was not enough. The big day finally arrived. The students could only wear their usual clothes to go to the playground.
In complete desperation, the team from Springtown saw the players from Midstone coming to them. Each player had a uniform in his hand, which was for the players in Springtown. Mindstone’s players were moved to see the efforts made by the players in Springtown to get uniform. That was why they were willing to lend their spare uniforms. After the Springtown team changed uniforms, the game between the two teams began.

W: I’m Lee Minwoo from South Korea. When I was little I was very interested in English. I learned English at school. There was a good teacher who was not a native English speaker. He taught French and German, but he really spoke English quite well. It was funny because I was the only student in his class — it was really a private lesson. I had an excellent coursebook. I still keep a copy of it. The front cover was red with a lovely picture, and it was very modern. Learning English was quite easy for me because the teacher was so good and he helped a lot. Also, I’m quite good at learning languages. It was really enjoyable to have classes. I loved the sound of the words. I felt really proud when my spelling improved day by day and I could read a short story. In middle school, English was still my favorite subject. I even stayed in America for one year as an exchange student. I learned a lot there, not only English but different cultures.
