Step I学习理解
活动一:感知与注意
1. Read an advertisement.
(1) Show students the advertisement by a famous British explorer.
MEN WANTED for a dangerous journey: small wages, bitter cold, long months of complete darkness, constant danger, and safe return uncertain. Honour and reward will follow if it is successful. Ernest Shackleton
(2) Ask students to discuss the following questions ingroups.
According to the advertisement, what kind of men was Ernest Shackleton looking for
Would you like to join an expedition like this Why or why not
Suggested answers: According to the advertisement, Shackleton was looking for men who were not interested in money or comfort, but in honour and achievement, which cannot be bought. I would like to join an expedition like this. Although it would be extremely tough, the sense of achievement I would get from doing it would be worth it. I don’t think I could get the same feeling from anything else. I would not like to join an expedition like this. Because the wages are low and the working environment is not very pleasant.
2. Get to know Ernest Shackleton.
Ask students to look at the pictures and background information about Ernest Shackleton’s expedition to Antarctica.
【备注】背景信息见备课资料。
3. Make a prediction.
Ask students to work in groups and predict the main idea of Blackborow’s diary entries based on the title.
Suggested answer: Based on the title A Successful Failure, the diary entries may be something about the accident they had in their expedition.
【设计意图】在阅读前,通过讨论著名探险家的一则广告可以提前让学生感知探险家们不畏艰险的品质。通过补充沙克尔顿的背景知识及探险图片,为学生后面的阅读扫清障碍;结合标题对文章的内容进行合理的猜测,形成阅读期待,为提高阅读效率奠定基础。
活动二:获取与梳理
1. Get the main idea of each diary.
Ask students to read the diary entries and get the main idea of each one.
Diary 1: _________________________________________________________
Dairy 2: _________________________________________________________
Dairy 3: _________________________________________________________
Suggested answers: Diary 1: It talks about how the author joined the Endurance expedition. Diary 2: It is about what Shackleton and his crew did when Endurance was stuck in the ice and then got crushed and sank. Diary 3: It describes the crew members’ life on Elephant Island.
2. Read and answer.
Ask students to read the text and answer the following questions.
How did Blackborow come to join the expedition
What happened to Endurance What did the crewmembers have to do
What did Shackleton do to make sure they could survive
Suggested answers: Blackborow tried to join the expedition by applying but was rejected for lack of experience. So, he hid on the ship and was later discovered. Shackleton let him have a job rather than turn back. Endurance got stuck in ice as it approached Antarctica. The ship got crushed and the crew had to abandon it. The crew had to collect essential supplies and camp on the ice. Shackleton made sure they survived by leaving with a few men to find help. It was too dangerous for all the men to go.
【设计意图】通过获取三篇日记的大意及阅读后回答问题的活动,有助于学生了解本文的主要大意和框架结构,让学生对文章的内容有一定的理解。
Step Ⅱ 应用实践
活动三:描述与阐释
Ask students to use their own words to explain the highlighted words in the text.
Suggested answers: The word “vigour” means health and energy. The phrase “turned... down” means to reject or refuse something or someone. The word “crushed” means to be squeezed until damaged. The phrase “keep our spirits up” means to stay positive usually in a bad situation. The word “miserable” means very unhappy or uncomfortable. The word “cosy” means very comfortable, safe, and warm.
【设计意图】通过用自己的语言解释生词和短语的意思,既提高学生的语言运用和表达能力,又提高学生对文章语境的理解。
Step III 迁移创新
活动四:推理与论证
Infer character traits and emotions.
(1) Ask students to work in pairs and discuss the following questions.
How did Blackborow’s feelings about being on the expedition change as the days passed
What personal qualities did Shackleton, Wild, and Blackborow exhibit Find examples from the text to support your answers.
Suggested answers: Blackborow’s feeling about being on the expedition changed from enthusiasm at the start to fear and extreme discomfort after Endurance got stuck. Shackleton showed kindness when he allowed Blackborow to stay on the ship and gave him a job. He showed calmness when he asked the crew to collect essentials. He showed he was not selfish when he left his gold behind, but showed he was thinking of others’ feelings by allowing Hussey to keep his banjo. He showed great bravery by setting off to find help for the rest of the crew. Wild was shown to be kind when he tried to lift Blackborow’s spirits. Blackborow was enthusiastic at first, making sure he got on the expedition. Although he felt low later, he tried to think about better things, showing again his positive character.
(2) Instruct students to read and learn the strategy of inferring character traits and emotions.
Infer character traits and emotions To infer means to guess something based on the evidence. When inferring character traits and emotions in a story, you need to look at the characters’ words and actions. What do these tell us about their personal qualities and feelings
活动五:想象与创造
Write a message.
Imagine you are Perce Blackborow. Write a message in a bottle to explain your situation and ask for help.
Suggested answer: Help! My shipmates and I are trapped on Elephant Island, near South Georgia Island. We have no decent place to sleep and almost no food and water. Please send help as soon as possible! Yours faithfully, Perce Blackborow of the Sir Ernest Shackleton expedition to the South Pole
【设计意图】学生利用所学语言、语篇和文化知识,描述碰到的问题,将所学内容用自己的语言总结概括,实现深度学习,促进能力向素养的转化,提高英语学科核心素养。
