Helen Keller was an American writer. When she was around one and a half years old she had a serious illness, which made her blind and deaf.
Helen tried to communicate with the people around her. However, it was difficult to let others know what she needed. Her parents realized that she needed some special help. They found Annie Sullivan. She began to teach Helen words and how to read. Helen also learned how to talk from Sarah Fuller, a teacher for the deaf. Helen was very happy that she could read books and say words. A new world opened up for her.
At sixteen years old Helen went to college. During college she began to write about her experiences of being deaf and blind. She wrote a number of articles for a magazine. These articles later came out together in a book called The Story of My Life.
As Helen grew older, she wanted to help other people like herself. She joined the American Foundation(基金会) for the blind and traveled around the country giving speeches and raising money for the foundation.
