Bogre met Frederico in New York City. In 2014, they started a project to make the first public records of every language in the world. They’ve already recorded more than 350 languages.
“When humans lose a language, we also lose the greater diversity(多样化)in art and traditions,” said Bogre. Between 1950 and 2010, 230 languages disappeared. Today, a third of the world’s languages have fewer than 1,000 speakers left. Every two weeks a language dies with its last speaker, and 50% to 90% of them are said to disappear by the next century.
Volunteers have been asked to film local speakers talking in their mother languages. Local speakers are asked to share their stories. One volunteer recorded a language that had never been studied by language researchers before. Another volunteer found a speaker of Ainu, a language in Japan that has nothing to do with any other known language.
A lack(缺乏)of protection is the reason for diminishing(削弱)the language diversity. For much of the 20th century, governments across the world made some local people use official languages. More than 100 languages in Australia have disappeared since Europeans arrived. However, most languages die today because of other things. The weather change and urbanization(城市化)greatly result in the disappearance of languages.

Two-thirds of the Earth’s surface(表面)is covered by water. However, most of the water is salty. Very little fresh water can be used by humans. People need fresh water for drinking, cooking and washing in daily life.
Water is also necessary for our body. Two-thirds of the human weight is water. Even two percent of water loss can make people be dehydrated(脱水的), which can lead to tiredness. Therefore, one needs to drink plenty of water every day.
Water is also important for plants and animals. With enough water, plants can grow well and animals can have enough food to eat. Water is also used to create electricity. Machines such as air conditioners, computers and washing machines would be of no use without electricity.
With an increase in population, the needs of people have also increased. As a result, there is not enough fresh water all over the world. Rainfall is the source of all water. Not enough rain has made the problem even worse.
To work out this problem, one needs to use water properly and save every drop. For example, taps should be turned off completely when they are not being used. Also, people should take a short-time shower and wash clothes with less water. People need to think about the environment and plan their water use.

As people spend more time indoors because of COVID-19, at-home hobbies have become popular. Michael Crowe has sold at-home tools since 2017. He said, “It seems that everybody is trying to grow mushrooms(蘑菇).”
Crowe said that his customers often sent him photos of their mushrooms. “It’s just so cool because it can bring together people of all ages and people all over the place can grow food and have a really good time learning about it,” he said. What’s more, it is said that people who regularly garden will have a lower level of nervousness.
Unlike most crops, mushrooms have a clear growing process(过程). People don’t have to wait for months to see the fruit of their work, as mushrooms grow quickly when placed in the right conditions.
“I buy the tools to watch the growing process of mushrooms. If you look away for two hours and look back, they double in size,” at-home grower Jenn Xu said.

Every culture around the world has different customs and ways of communicating. When you learn a language, you learn more than words.
In China, people are used to saying “sorry” to show that they regret doing something wrong. But it’s very proud for American people to have polite manners towards one another in public. They often use the word “sorry” —even when they don’t really mean it! Usually, if they want to ask a stranger for the time, they will start by saying “Sorry to trouble you. ” If they’re five minutes late for the appointment, they will greet the person by saying “Sorry, I’m late!” It’s quite different in China. They use the word “sorry” in so many different situations that the meaning of the word has changed a little over time. The two main dictionary definitions(定义)of “sorry” are: 1)feeling sad for someone else because of their problems or bad luck; 2)feeling regret because you’ve done something wrong.
So what does “sorry” really mean And why do western people use it so much Well, in western culture, saying “sorry” is a way to be polite. It’s also a very clever way to get what they want. If you want to borrow something from others, you’d better say “sorry” to them about something. Or it’s hard for you to get what you want. A long time before I was born, my grandma and grandpa moved into the house on Beechwood Avenue. They had a young family of 4 little girls. During that time, it was hard to find a job. So, on weekend grandpa and grandma cleaned the garden to grow some of their own food. They planted tomatoes, beans, cabbages, potatoes and strawberries to feed their growing family. All summer long, the family ate food from the garden.
The family grew up, and before too many years had passed, the grandchildren came to visit. Grandma and grandpa still planted their garden every spring. Everyone still enjoyed the good food from the garden and always took some home.
Then grandpa died in one summer when he was eighty-nine years old. It was a lonely winter for grandma. She sat near the window, looking out at the yard and wondering if she could plant the garden in the spring. It would be hard to care for it by herself. When spring came, she planted only a little.
One nice day in the early summer, grandma heard a noise in the front yard and looked out the window. There were thousands of bees in the air. Grandma wondered what she could do. She decided to wait and think it over. Before long, she decided the bees won’t bother anyone, so she went about her business and didn’t give them any other thought.
That summer, grandma’s little garden grew and grew. The neighbors all puzzled why they grew so well. One day, grandma’s brother Frank visited her. Frank said,“In my hometown, the farmers often hired beekeepers to set up bee houses near their fields. The bees helped them to grow.” That was when Grandma realized that her bees had helped with her garden all summer.

People do not often think about the women’s national team when it comes to Chinese football. That was until the ladies completed an amazing second-half comeback in the final of the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup on February 6.
The ladies were playing against South Korea. The halftime score (2-0) came as a big disappointment. However, the Chinese ladies on the field didn’t lose heart. Instead, they fought back. In the second half of the match, Tang Jiali, Zhang Linyan and Xiao Yuyi each scored a goal and beat South Korea 3-2.
Their final win sent the team to the headlines of almost every newspaper in China. But it’s hard to say how long this spotlight(聚光灯)will last. Will people continue to care about these female players and the successors who come after in the years to come There has long been a belief that football is only for boys. Pu Wei, now retired, is one of the best female footballers in Chinese history. When she was a little girl, her father wanted her to become a dancer or a pianist. He could hardly imagine his little girl chasing after a ball. Pu had to fool her father into believing that she was just going jogging when, in fact, she was going to play football. Many female footballers had similar experiences when they were young.
Apart from the absence of support and attention, female footballers face many other challenges. They are, for example, often paid much less than male footballers. In terms of income, none of the top ten international footballers is a female.
When we congratulate the female footballers on their historic win, we shouldn’t forget all of the difficulties they have bravely overcome to get where they are today. The next time you talk about Chinese national football, be sure to mention the team that has won the Asian Cup. The girls deserve more of our attention and support.

As temperatures began dropping in South Florida, the US National Weather Service began warning people that iguanas (鬣蜥蜴) might soon fall from trees. It didn’t take long for the prediction to come true when the temperatures fell lower and lower. Several people posted pictures of the fallen iguanas on social media. One person wrote, “It’s true. A lot of iguanas are falling from trees in South Florida.”
What happened Iguanas are cold-blooded. That means they don’t make their own body heat like humans. Instead, they get their warmth from their environment. When it’s too cold, iguanas fall into a kind of sleep. For iguanas in trees, that means they can lose their hold and fall to the ground.
If you don’t think it seems natural for iguanas to have this problem, you’re right. Green iguanas aren’t actually supposed to be in Florida at all. They were from warmer places. They were brought to Florida by accident. Some were carried on ships. Others came as pets and got free.
Even though iguanas may look dead, they’re usually not. This weekend, experts warned people in Florida not to bring iguanas inside to warm them up. Once they recover (恢复), they’re not always friendly.
