一、阅读回答问题
How would you feel if your school banned(禁止) phones in class
In February, the Ministry of Education announced that mobile phones should, in principle(原则上), be banned in primary and secondary schools. This aims to protect students’ eyesight, make sure they focus on their work and prevent them from becoming addicted(上瘾的) to the Internet and online games.
Xu Xiaohe, a 13-year-old from Zhejiang, supports the policy. “In fact, my school has never allowed us to bring our mobile phones,” Xu said. “It’s a distraction from our work. Even adults can’t control themselves, let alone kids like us.”
Li Zihan from Beijing, however, feels differently. The 13-year-old believes that a mobile phone ban is too simplistic for a generation that has grown up with mobile phones. “Students should be taught self-management skills, as well as learn how to use their phones effectively to help with their studies,” Li said. “This might be the best way to deal with technology in modern times.”
For Ge Ziqi, the problem with banning phones has more to do with life outside of school. The 13-year-old Beijinger uses a bike-sharing app every day to travel between her home and school.
“Today, phones are used everywhere, from taking a bus to buying food,” she said. “If I can’t take my phone with me, I’ll have to buy my own bicycle.”
Some schools have come up with ideas to solve problems like Ge’s. At Shanghai Shatian School, for example, students are asked to put their phones in special lockers during school hours. The students call these lockers the “phone farm” (“养机场”) or “phone tarmac” (“停机坪”).

Scrooge was a cold, greedy, mean, old man. Scrooge and Marley were business partners for years. Scrooge was his only friend and his only mourner when Marley died. He lived in Jacob Marley’s old apartment. It was very rundown.
That evening, the fog and frost hung over the black gateway to the house. And the yard was so dark that Scrooge had to feel his way along with his hands. To his surprise, Scrooge saw Marley’s face instead of the knocker(门环)when Scrooge put his key in the lock. Scrooge looked at the door knocker for several moments, and then it changed back to being a door knocker again.
Scrooge was quite scared. He quickly closed the door and then he went up to his room. It was very dark because Scrooge only had a candle. But darkness didn’t worry Scrooge, because darkness is cheap. And Scrooge liked cheap things.
Suddenly he heard a loud clanking sound. It came from downstairs. Somebody was pulling a heavy chain over the barrels in the wine merchant’s cellar. It was coming straight towards his room.
The face was the same. It was Marley, he was dragging a chain. Scrooge stared at the ghost of Marley as it stood there before him. But still he didn’t believe it was really there.
“Who are you ” asked Scrooge, calmly.
“In life I was your partner. Jacob Marley.”
“Why are you carrying that chain ” asked Scrooge, trembling.
Scrooge was trying very hard not to be scared. The Ghosts voice scared him and its cold eyes frightened him.
“I wear the chain that I made in life,” replied the Ghost. “I made it link by link, and metre to by metre. I wound it around myself. Does it look strange to you ”
“I had the opportunity to be kind and do good in life. But I did nothing. Now I’m dead. I regret that,” cried the Ghost. “I’m here tonight to warn you. You can still escape my fate(命运). I’m giving you a chance... ”

Eradajere Oleita often finds ways to give back on her birthday. As her 25th birthday was coming in 2022, she started looking for her next project. She found it when she watched a video on the Internet about how to iron foil-lined(铝箔内衬的)chip bags into sleeping bags. Oleita said the video gave her the idea of the Chip Bag Project.
“The project allows me to bring two of my thoughts together, people and the environment.” Oleita said. “We throw so many things away and never think about where that’s ending”.
“It takes about four hours to make a sleeping bag. Each takes about 150 to 300 chip bags,” Oleita told The Detroit News. “Our sleeping bags are better than the cotton ones. They are waterproof(防水的) and light. They are easy to carry as well.”
Since 2020, the Chip Bag Project has collected over 800,000 chip bags and created 110 sleeping bags.
“Whenever we get a chip bag, we’re preventing something going into our water,” Oleita said. “And when we give somebody a bag, we’re giving warmth, and we’re helping a human life.”
The Chip Bag Project is just the latest environmental project for Oleita. She has also worked with the Youth Energy Squad. One of her first large projects was creating a 6-foot-tall Minion(小黄人)out of recycled plastic bottles.
“Before, I thought environmental things had nothing to do with people like me,” Oleita said. “But now I believe that each of us can do something to the future of the world by training people not to be careless with their things, and at the same time we can help people in need.”

Robots on the farm
What can drones do Their many uses include taking pictures from the sky, observing(观察) wild animals and delivering packages. Now these small flying robots are leading a new farming revolution(革命), according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
When equipped(装备) with cameras and other data-gathering devices, drones provide us with an eye in the sky. Here are a few of the farming-related jobs drones can do.
Looking for sick crops
Drones can scan(扫描) crops using different kinds of light. Then, they produce multispectral images(多谱图像) that can help us find sickly yellow plants within fields of green. Drones can also detect bacteria(检测细菌) that are harmful to crops in the air from a few kilometers away. Farmers can check the drones’ air samples(样本) and try to find ways to protect their crops before the bacteria get to them.
Counting cattle
When flying over cattle, drones can track the livestock and find out where fences need fixing. People can also equip drones with thermal imagers(热像仪) and night-vision cameras. This can help farmers look for animals that could harm their cattle.
Water watch
Most fields aren’t perfectly flat(平坦的). After watering, some places may dry out faster than others. Other spots might not get water at all. Drones can scan the field and make a 3-D map. Using the map, farmers can figure out which parts of a field are dry or need improvement.
Spraying pesticide(喷洒农药)
Different parts of a field might be uneven(不平坦) or have different altitudes(高度). Drones can check for this when flying above the land. Then, they change their height and therefore spray the correct amount of pesticide over each part of the field. This is more efficient than traditional pesticide spraying. Drones can finish spraying a field up to five times faster than with traditional machinery, according to a study from MIT.

A few years ago, a friend gave me a restaurant gift card, and I picked a sunny Sunday afternoon to use it. It felt good taking my family to a nice restaurant. The meal was delicious, and we all had a good time together. The gift card covered almost all of the check(账单). I reached into my wallet to get enough cash to cover the rest. 1 saw two bills(钞票) inside. The first would cover the rest of the check. The second would cover the check and give the waitress a nice tip. I reached down to pick the first one.
At that moment, my mind flashed back to 30 years ago. I was working as a busboy (餐厅勤杂工) in a restaurant much like the one we were in. It was long hours of hard work for low pay. I remembered seeing the waitresses worrying about how they were going to pay the rent. I remembered the pain in their eyes and the sadness in their faces at the end of the day.
I blinked (眨眼睛) and was back in the present again, with my fingers touching the smaller bill in my wallet. I smiled, pushed it back down and picked out the larger bill. I folded it around the gift card and covered both of them with the check. As we all got up from the table, I handed them to the hardworking waitress. “You keep the change,” I said with a smile and a happy heart.
We are all one family in this world. Do your best to be kind. Do your best to be a good person and replace suffering with joy.

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most famous landmarks(地标) in Australia. This summer holiday, I got the chance to visit it and find out what makes this building so great.
As our guide told us, the Sydney Opera House was built with a kind of self-cleaning material that is very rare even today.
First, we visited the Drama Hall. We learned about the designer of the Sydney Opera House—Danish architect(建筑师) Jorn Utzon. He was the winner of an international design competition. However, he designed the building according to his own tastes, which caused several problems. The project was completed 10 years late. The cost of construction(建造) was over budget(预算). Utzon didn’t get to see it after it was built.
Then, we visited Joan Sutherland Theatre. The theater was refurbished(翻新) in 2017 with new high-tech equipment. There was a rehearsal(排练) that day, so we could hear the beautiful sound of the orchestra(管弦乐队). Finally, we arrived at the largest theater—Concert Hall. It has hosted many kinds of performances, from classical to rock music. A few years ago, a sports event was even held there.
Before we finished the tour, the guide told us the rest of Utzon’s story. In 1966, Utzon had an argument with the government and refused to give in. He had to leave the country. It was a hard time in his life. But many years later, people understood him and saw the building as a masterpiece(杰作).
From this tour, I learned that the opera house is not only a famous building, but a carrier(载体) of history and culture.

Beijing Opera is one of the traditional Chinese drama art forms with a history of more than 200 years. It is said that Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty loved the theatre. At the beginning, there was no Beijing Opera. Kunqu Opera was the most popular, but Emperor Qianlong gradually became bored with this style. Various local operas were brought to Beijing to please the emperor. Drawing on the good points of these local operas, the new Beijing Opera came into being and became Qianlong’s favorite.
Beijing Opera mixes different art forms, including singing, dancing, acrobatics and Wushu. All these art forms are put into one performance. Facial painting (脸谱) is one of the most important signs of Peking Opera. It shows the roles’ personalities. For example, a red face usually shows the role’s bravery; a white face shows the treachery and guile; a black face shows the role is a strict man.
Beijing Opera has spread to many other places. Mei Lanfang, a famous performer, was the first to introduce Beijing Opera to foreigners and made highly successful tours to foreign countries.
“You will doubt and sometimes be a little bored, but you will be interested gradually. You will be strongly attracted to Beijing Opera, even if you know nothing about the drama background.” This is how one traveler described his first experience in watching Beijing Opera.
Beijing Opera is China’s national opera and it is full of Chinese cultural traditions. Welcome to China and enjoy Beijing Opera.
