Gina’ Space 8:32 a. m. 11th February 2020
UpcyclingNowadays, we are more wasteful than ever. We need to start living more responsibly—but how One answer is to upcycle. I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. I made a “new” hat for my brother. It used to be my dad’s sweater. Do you upcycle If so, what new things have you made If not, why not give it a try.
Comments Terry-B 9:08 a. m. 11th February 2020 Why don’t you give your older clothes to people in need I even give away the most expensive things I don’t wear any more. I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need. Gina 9:28 a. m. 11th February 2020 Good point! I’m talking about the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil rich, we should give it to those in need.

Seventy percent of our planet is covered by one huge, continuous body of seawater — the ocean. In 2008, the United Nations recognized June 8 as Word Oceans Day. It’s a day to think about the important role that the oceans play in our daily lives, the dangers that our oceans are facing and the action we can take to protect them.
The importance of our oceans: The oceans is home to most plants and animals on earth. Marine (海生的) plants provide us with 70 per cent of the oxygen that we breathe. The ocean controls our climate, providing not only heat in winter but also cool air in summer. It also provides us with both food and medicine. No matter where you live on the planet, no matter how far from the sea, your life may depend on the oceans. Now you know how important oceans are for people!
The problems our oceans face: The most serious problem the oceans face at the moment is plastic pollution. Reducing single-use plastic, including plastic bags and plastic bottles, has been an important theme of World Oceans Day for a number of years. Climate change and rising sea temperatures are also a huge problem. Rising sea temperatures have a direct influence on weather patterns and are seen as partly responsible for an increase in extreme weather conditions.
▲ People celebrate the day in many different ways, including special events at aquariums and zoos, beach and river clean-ups, school activities, art contests and film festivals. You can join in to remind people about the importance of our oceans and to make a difference.
4.Why did the United Nations set up World Oceans Day

To Friend or Not to Friend
We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue Social networking sites have been popular, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends
In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize how important social networks are in their lives.
These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.
It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to refuse their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.
A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores (忽视) their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.” Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.
8.From Paragraph 2, we learn that ________.
A.parents feel secure about the privacy online
B.social networks successfully fill the generation gap
C.parents have realized the importance of social networks
D.social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate
9.Teenagers may refuse a parent’s friend request because ________.
A.they hide something from their parents B.they are unwilling to be watched by parents
C.their parents will fall behind in technology D.their parents make bad comments on them
10.The passage is mainly about ________.
A.parents’friend requests B.social networks C.privacy online D.the generation gap
11.The passage is written mainly for ________.
A.teachers B.parents C.teenagers D.researchers
When I was younger, I was crazy about reading. I could get through a whole book in a day, and used to beg my parents every night to let me stay up late so that I could just finish my chapter.
However, while there are many books for younger children, once you reach your mid-teens, the choices become limited. I found myself choosing between books for children that were simple and not that interesting, and adult books that I couldn’t quite understand.
This lack (缺少) of choice finally led me to read less and less. When I was in the secondary school, the only books I read were ones we were told in English class, and I was never very interested in my teacher’s choices.
Luckily, I realized quickly that deciding to go to university meant I had signed up for four years of reading books. I chose a French literature module (课程) in my first year. I started out, thinking I wouldn’t enjoy any of the works we were studying over the course of the year. However, I soon realized that at a university level, the discussion was more fruitful and I found I had a lot to say! And being able to discuss my thoughts with others meant I could better understand the books.
I began reading again for pleasure, starting with Malcolm X’s autobiography (自传) and never looking back. Now, during my year abroad, I spend a lot of my spare time in bookshops and reading in cafes. I’m so happy that I rediscovered my love of books.

14.What made the author start reading for pleasure again
A.Her reading experiences at university. B.Her professor of French literature.
C.A special bookstore abroad. D.A book by Malcolm X.
15.What’s the text mainly about

In recent years, large-scale (大规模的) tree plantation programmes are a popular way to deal with the climate crisis (气候危机).These trees, they store lots of carbon dioxide from the air. They give us oxygen we breathe. And there’s no doubt that the right trees in the right place is a good thing. However, large-scale tree planting is becoming a problem.
Yatir forest is Israel’s largest forest. But the four million trees are actually having a warming effect on the planet. And the bright desert surface reflected (反射) more sunlight than the present darker tree canopy (树冠) that replaced it. This forest is making global warming worse.
What the Yatir forest warns us is that choosing the right location is very important. The wrong location can also use up groundwater and dry up streams. Choosing the right location isn’t the only challenge for large-scale tree plantations. Most of the time, these tree planting programmes choose one type of trees. They are bad for biodiversity (生物多样性).
Another big problem is planting the wrong type of trees. In South Africa, the introduction of new types of trees has led to covering large areas of land. The country now spends millions of pounds clearing the trees every year.
So, protecting the forests would be a better use of our time and resources. We should allow space around the forests for them to naturally expand. And it’s the best way to get more trees on the planet. One place where planting trees is good is in the cities. Trees help reduce noise, improve air quality, help prevent flooding, and even improve your physical and mental health.
There is no one solution to the climate crisis. We have to use all the tools at hand to reduce greenhouse gases and slow down global warming.

One of the passengers on the boat was a rich, young gentleman from New Orleans. His name was St Clare. He was travelling with his daughter called Eva, who was between five and six years old. She was a beautiful child, with blonde hair and blue eyes. She was always busy or running around, and Tom noticed her and thought that she looked like an angel. She often went where the slaves sat in chains and looked at them with sad eyes. Sometimes she brought them food.
One day, she talked with Uncle Tom for the first time. “So, Uncle Tom, where are you going ” Eva said. “I don’t know, Miss Eva.” Tom said. “Why not ” said Eva. “Because my master is going to sell me, and I don’t know who will buy me.” “My papa can buy you,” said Eva. “I’ll ask him today.” “Thank you,” said Tom.
Later that day, Eva and her father were standing together on the upper deck on the side of the boat. Suddenly, the child moved too quickly and fell into the water. Tom saw everything and he jumped into the water immediately. He caught her and swam back to the boat, where many people helped to lift her out of the water.
Eva was with her father, who was talking to Haley. “So what’s the price ” The father asked. “More than thirteen hundred dollars,” said Haley. “He’s very good.” “That’s too much!” said St Clare. “Show me your papers.” “Papa, please buy him! The price is not important.” Eva said.

Just the other day, I was in a bookshop and found a book named How to make friends with foreigners. As a Canadian living in China for a year, I was curious to see what kind of advice the writer was giving on this matter.
One piece of advice really caught my attention and, I must say, made me feel quite angry. In the writer’s opinion, foreigners are an “opportunity (机会)” to improve your oral English. If the foreigner doesn’t want to answer your questions, then he or she is a rude person who you wouldn’t want to spend time with anyway. I think the advice is not only incorrect, but also may harm the relationship between Chinese and foreigners in China.
Like most other “Lao Wai” living in China, I know how lonely one can sometimes feel living in a culture different from our own familiar (熟悉的) ways. However, I simply accept as part of being here. So far my time in China has been rewarding, I have improved my Chinese language skills, learned about one of the fastest developing countries in the world today and made some very close Chinese friends.
However, I have also met many Chinese people who consider me only as an “opportunity” to improve their oral English. I have had people following me from town to my flat to trouble me to teach them English. I have had complete strangers throwing articles or speeches in my face, insisting that I help them with the English translation.
Friendship for a lot of foreigners is about spending time with someone who companies (陪伴) them. So if there is any advice to give on making and keeping friendships with foreigners, I would say that it is this: Treat foreigners as friends, not opportunities. We expect to make friendships step by step, over a period of time, not in a rush.
27.What does the underlined phrase “this matter” in Paragraph 1 refer to (指代)
A.How to improve oral English B.How to translate written English

A.Many hands make light work. B.True friendships stand the test of time.
C.You can’t put all your eggs in one basket. D.Friendship can’t stand always on one side.
The film, first released in 1983, displays many aspects of traditional Chinese culture. The Legend of Sealed Book tells the story of how two boys fight against three fox spirits. The look of the three fox spirits comes from Peking Opera makeup (造型). The waters and mountains are in the style of traditional Chinese ink wash paintings.
China’s first ink wash animation (动画) actually came out in 1960. The film Little Tadpole (蝌蚪) Looking for Mummy has all the elements of the animals, plants and rocks drawn with ink and brush. The animators(动画制作者) learned from the great artist Qi Baishi. The film is only about 15 minutes long, but it took lots of work. Without computers, the animators had to draw everything by hand. To save time, the clever artists stamped the tadpoles’ bodies on paper with a special seal.
In the past few years, ink wash animations have become popular in China. Now, animators are combining ink wash painting with computer technology. For example, Fog Hills of Five Elements, which came out in 2020, is in the ink wash style, just like Ma Liang and His Magical Writing Brush. It’s about five elemental envoys fighting against evil.

From tiny seeds (种子), great discoveries grow. A mini-garden carried on China’s Chang’e 4 moon lander recently became home to the first plant to grow on another world.
This is yet another success for Chang’e 4. On January 2, the probe (探测器) became the first lander to touch down on the far side of the moon. This is the unknown face of the moon that is always looking away from us, so we never see it from down here on the earth. Although it is often regarded as the dark side of the moon, the far side actually gets as much sunshine as the near side. For example, when all we can see is a silver of a new moon, the far side of the moon is in full sunlight.
Part of Chang’e 4’s mission (使命) is to see how a moon base could be built for humans, including exploring (探索) whether humans could grow food and other plant products there. Chang’e 4 carried a mini-garden with air, water and soil with seeds planted in it. When plants shoot on the earth, their stems grow away from the gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground), and so they always shoot upwards. The moon’s gravity is a sixth as strong as the earth’s, so Chang’e 4’s experiment was a test: would the earth plants know which way was up on the moon Four days after landing, a tiny cotton shoot showed that they do.
Night has now fallen on the far side of the moon; sunlight will not return until the start of February. As a result, the cotton shoots died. Besides the darkness, the plants can’t stand the cold (it can drop to -170*C on the moon at night). However, the experiment is a success, since it has proved that it is possible for plants to grow in space.

A.the far side of the moon gets less sunlight
B.the earth plants know the way to grow on the moon
C.we can seethe far side of the moon from the earth
D.the steins fail to grow away from the earth’s gravity
37.What can be inferred (推理) from the passage
A.Plants can be grown on the moon soon. B.It is perfect to do experiments on the moon.
C.The cotton shoots can last days on the moon. D.We can see a new moon at the start of February.

Rat remembered his own little home under the ground. He hadn’t seen it for a long time. When Badger and Mole returned to the kitchen, they saw that Rat was very eager to go home to the river. The underground made him uncomfortable. He likes fresh air and sunshine.
“Relax, Rat.” said Badger. “I’ll show you a shortcut through the Wind Forest and you’ll be home in no time. The Badger took Mole, Rat and Otter through a very long underground passage. It seemed that they walked for a very long time. However, finally they arrived at a part of the passage that was just under the ground. The passage let out into the open air. Mole could see the sunshine. Quickly the Badger let them out of the passage and said goodbye. The three animals thanked Badger for his kindness.
Now the Otter led them through the rest of the Wild Forest. The Otter was almost as powerful an animal as the Badger, so Mole and Rat felt safe with him. Finally they reached the forest end. They were looking at the green fields and the river was nearby. All of the animals were very happy to be going home, away from the dark forest.
Happily the animals hurried toward the river back to Rat’s house. As he ran, the Mole realized that he was really a field animal. He might live under the ground like Badger, but he also liked the little gardens and the fresh air and the sunshine. The Wild Forest was not his kind of place.

Driverless cars are coming. Such cars will make getting from one place to another safer and less stressful. They also could reduce pollution. But how should driverless cars deal with emergencies(紧急情况) People disagree on the answer. And that might put the brakes(刹车) on this technology, a new study concludes.
To understand the challenge, imagine a car that suddenly meets some walkers in the road. Even with braking, it's too late to avoid a crash. So the car’s artificial intelligence(人工智能) must decide whether to swerve (急转弯). To save the walkers, should the car swerve off the road or swerve into busy traffic What if such choices would likely kill the car’s passengers
Researchers used online surveys to study people’s attitudes about such situations with driverless cars. People mostly agreed that driverless cars should be designed to protect the most people. But there is a problem. Those same surveyed people also want to protect passengers at all costs—even if the walkers would now end up dying.
“Driverless cars can completely change transportation”, says Iyad Rahwan. But, he adds, this new technology creates a moral problem that could slow its acceptance.
“Makers of driverless cars are in a hard situation,” Bonnefbn’s group warns. Most buyers would want their cars to be designed to protect themselves first. However, rules might one day instruct that cars must act for the greater good. That would mean saving the most people. But the scientists think rules like this could drive away buyers.
The expert Kurt Gray thinks that even if all driverless cars are designed to protect their passengers in emergencies, traffic accidents will decrease. Those cars might be dangerous to walkers on rare occasions. But they won’t speed, won’t drive drunk while driving, which would be a win for society.
49.The underlined word “challenge” in Paragraph 2 refers to ________.

Researchers at Georgia Tech have been working to improve a musical robot called Shimon. Now Shimon doesn’t simply play music, he also writes the words to his own songs and sings them.
Shimon has been around for quite a while as a musical robot. Even back in 2015, he was playing with other musicians at the Kennedy Center in New York. What Shimon could do back then was already pretty cool.
Using AI(人工智能), Shimon was taught to write his own music. ① For Shimon, that meant he could not only make up his own music, but do it in real time, while playing with other musicians.
Now Shimon can write the words to his own songs. ② Shimon learned to write the words for the songs the same way he learned to write music—by being “fed” thousands and thousands of examples. Shimon was trained on the lyrics (歌词) to 50, 000 songs.
Georgia Tech professor Gil Weinberg, who leads the Shimon project, gets Shimon going with a starting idea. Shimon then writes the lyrics based around that idea. “You’ll get a word like ‘storm’, and then it’ll produce a lot of relational words, like ‘wind’ and ‘rain’.” He says Shimon gets many ideas, keeps the good ones, and builds on them.
③ To give Shimon a voice, the Georgia Tech team worked with experts at Pompeu Fabra University in Spain. The voice was created using AI and sounds very much like a man.
④ To show off Shimon and his new abilities, the researchers have recorded one of Shimon’s songs, called “Into Your Mind”. They have made a video for the song, which is out on Youlube.
Later this spring, the team plans to put out an album(专辑) of about 8—10 of Shimon’s songs. There are also plans for Shimon to go on tour with a band to play and sing his songs live.
For Mr Weinberg, that’s the main goal behind the Shimon project—not to have robots take over, but to have robots and humans make something beautiful together.

I was pleased at running away from Long John Silver though I knew he was still somewhere nearby on the island.
As I was trying to find a safer place to hide myself, I heard some men talking close by. It was Silver and Tom.
“I want you with me!” Silver shouted, “when we have the treasure, there’s gold for you too.” “No,” cried Tom, “I told you. I’m not a murderer. You’re guilty, all of you!” Sadly, these were the last words of Tom. It was a gunshot, Silver’s gun.
I moved away quickly and quietly. I ran fast, not thinking about the direction I was taking. Suddenly, I saw a figure move quickly from tree to tree. What it was, whether a bear or a man or a monkey Silver himself appeared less terrible to me now.
As the figure was getting closer to me. It was a man. “Who are you ” I asked.
“Ben Gunn,” he answered. “I’m poor Ben Gunn, and I haven’t spoken with a man these three years. Who are you, mate ” “Jim,” I told him.
“Now, Jim, tell me is that Flint’s ship ” he asked in fear, pointing to the ship which I ran away from.
“No, and Flint is dead. But there are some of Flint’s hands aboard.”
“Not a man… with one… leg ” Ben asked in a tremulous voice, with his pale face and scared eyes.
“You mean Silver He once worked as a cook on the ship.” I added. “Now, he is also on the island to find Flint’s treasure. He wants to kill us and take over the ship!”
“Good boy,” he said, “I was on Flint’s ship when he buried(埋)the treasure, he and six strong seamen. But, when he returned, he himself alone, and the six all died. How he made it, not a man except him could make out. It was a battle, a murder, and a sudden death—him against six.”
Suddenly, the noise of explosions(爆炸)stopped our talking…
