When I was in the 4th grade, I got to take a trip to the moon. I remember the day like it was yesterday. It was one of the strangest experiences I had ever had.
It all started when Miss Fritz, our science teacher, was showing a video about the solar system(太阳系)and different planets. Suddenly I noticed a shiny disc(亮盘)lying on the floor. I kept trying to pay attention to the video, but found myself reaching over to pickup the disc.
As soon as I touched it, something strange happened. I wasn’t in the classroom anymore. I was flying in the air! I was a little nervous, but also very excited. Soon I was standing on the moon. It was amazing! It looked very different from the earth. No trees, water, or houses. There wasn’t even any wind. Later I saw a flag. On the flag were the words, “To return to the earth, close your eyes.”
I knew it might get dark soon and I didn’t want to be on the moon by myself. So I decided to close my eyes. When I opened my eyes, I was still in my science classroom. Miss Fritz was turning on the lights because the video was over. I sat there wondering what had just happened. I looked around to look for the disc, but it was gone! Did I really take a trip to the moon or was it just a dream

Years ago, I lived in a building in a large city. The building next door was only a few feet away from mine. There was a woman who lived there, whom I had never met, yet I could see her seated by her window each afternoon, sewing or reading.
After several months had gone by, I began to notice that her window was dirty. Everything was unclear through the dirty window. I would say to myself, “I wonder why that woman doesn’t wash her window. It really looks terrible.”
One bright morning I decided to clean my flat, including washing the window on the inside.
Late in the afternoon when I finished the cleaning, I sat down by the window with a cup of coffee for a rest. What a surprise! The woman sitting by her window was clearly seen. Her window was clean!
Then I began to understand it. I had been criticizing (批评) her dirty window, but all the time I was watching hers through my own dirty window.
That was quite an important lesson for me. How often had I looked at and criticized others through the dirty window of my heart, through my own shortcomings
From then on, whenever I want to judge someone, I ask myself first, “Am I looking at him through my own dirty window ” Then I always judge myself before I judge others.

Max spent all of his free time reading. One day, he read an article about volcanoes (火山) and tried to share it with his classmates, but no one was interested in it.
Things changed when Max’s class was asked to do a science project about volcanoes in groups. Everyone wanted to be in the same group as Max. They all thought Max would be helpful during the project.
Max ended up being in a group with Anna and Jack. They needed to create a poster about volcanoes and build a volcano model.
Max made copies of the article about volcanoes so that his partners could read it too. They also went on the Internet to look for more information. The group met at Anna’s house that night to create a nice poster.
The next night they met at Jack’s house to build their volcano model. They made a volcano model with thick paper and clay (黏土). Max added red clay to the top of the volcano to make it look like it was erupting (喷发).

For many athletes, it’s hard to say goodbye to Beijing 2022 after they have enjoyed so many wonderful moments. However, all good things come to an end.
At the closing ceremony (仪式), athletes said goodbye in their own ways. The Japanese figure skater (花样滑冰运动员) Yuzuru Hanyu kissed the ice and bowed (鞠躬) deeply to people. The US snowboarder Shaun White took his final ride and shook his hand to say goodbye in the video.
The Moment of Remembrance has been part of every closing ceremony of the Olympic Games since the Rio Olympic Games in 2016. And China had its own way — performers (表演者) walked into the National Stadium, with willow twigs (柳条) in their hands. It showed China’s wishes to all the athletes and the whole world.
The willow twig carries a special meaning in Chinese culture. In ancient days, when friends said goodbye, they would pick a willow twig and give it to the person who was leaving.
“The Olympic Flame (奥运圣火) goes out but the moments, memories and friendships of the Beijing Games burn brightly,” the IOC said at the end of the closing ceremony.

When I was alone at home one day, I was more excited than being afraid. My parents had gone for an invitation and left me behind. I was feeling free like a bird for the first time in my life.
I read a storybook for about an hour and then decided to take a break. I sat on the sofa and watched TV. It was around 7:30 p.m. and I was watching my favorite program when the lights went off. I found myself in darkness. “What bad luck,” I thought to myself. I was feeling a bit afraid in the dark. Suddenly I heard a loud sound on the door. Then again another loud knock! My heart beat fast! I called my neighbor immediately. At that time, the electricity was on again. I didn’t feel calm until my neighbor came.
We heard some noises in the kitchen. When we walked closer, we saw two monkeys sitting on the table. I pulled out a large bag from the shelf and threw it on the animal. My neighbor was quick to pounce on it and quickly tied up the bag. The other monkey ran away through the window and now we had caught one!

Many of us read news every day. Maybe it’s because we’d like to know what’s happening in the world. Today we can get news from TV or the Internet, but how did ancient people get news
At the very beginning, information spread from mouth to mouth. People knew their communities from neighbors or travelers. Ancient Romans changed the way people got news. They posted daily happenings at public squares in the cities. Ancient Chinese did it in another way. The government had news sheet(传单)sent to officials(官员)in the whole country so that people could know what was going on in the capital.
In the 15th century, the development of printing technology led to one step in helping news spread. In the 16th century, the first real newspapers appeared. People started to form the habit of reading newspapers and share their opinions. The invention of telegraph(电报)machines led to another big step in news spreading. News stories were sent to the papers in minutes instead of weeks.
Now we get news in seconds from all over the world. We can become some kind of reporters by posting online what happens around us.

Aron Ralston is an American man. He is interested in mountain climbing. He is used to taking risks and there were many times when Aron almost lost his life because of accidents. On April 26, 2003, when he climbed in Utah, he found himself in a very dangerous situation. He struggled (抗争) and fought for five days. At last, he saved his own life but lost his right arm. Even after this experience, he kept on climbing mountains. He also wrote a famous book with a single arm.
Aron’s story tells us never to give up. Every person has a dream. It makes us do what we are doing, because it’s what we believe in. A friend invited us to help serve dinner at Tent City. A number of tents (帐篷) were set up for the homeless in the area.
I took my nine-year-old boy with me. He had a lot of questions because this whole thing challenged (挑战) his common ideas about how people lived in the world.
“Why don’t they have homes ”
“Why don’t they get food the way we do ”
We talked through the reasons why people end up in this kind of situation. Many of the people we served were missing teeth or had dirty clothes. To my surprise, they were quite thankful that I had brought my boy. Many said how fun it was to have an active child around. After dinner, I saw my son talking about sports happily with several elderly gentlemen. He was having a great time with them.
As some people returned to their tents, I heard him tell them, “Thanks so much for coming to have dinner with us.” I could see that my son’s simple words touched them greatly. I hugged him as we left to go home because it touched me too.
We should treat people with respect, no matter who they are, I think my boy has learned this.

A teacher once told her students to bring a bag and some potatoes to school. When they didn’t want to forgive (原谅) a person, they chose a potato and wrote the person’s name on it. Then they put it in the bag. Some of their bags became heavier and heavier.
They were told to carry their bags with them everywhere for one week. They would put them beside their beds at night, on the seats when sitting on buses, and next to their desks at school. Carrying the bags everywhere made the students very tired. They felt heavy stones in their hearts. And they had to pay attention to them all the time, so they didn’t forget them. The potatoes went bad and smelt terrible soon.
Forgiveness is a gift to other people. However, it is also a gift to us at the same time. If we keep our sadness and hatred (仇恨) in our hearts, we will have to carry them around all our lives. So we should learn to forgive.
