These are some ideas that some people came up with about what the life will be like in the year 2500.
We will have established a base on the moon.School kids can take field trips to the moon weekly. We will have found cures(疗法) for AIDS and cancer. The war will have ended and peace flows freely through the land.Kids will learn more and be smarter than ever before!History will be the main subject at school.Cafeteria(自助餐厅) food will be delicious! You just walk up to a machine, stick out your tongue, and it will scan your taste buds(味蕾) to see what you want to eat.
—Kristen
Here I am in the wonderful year of 2500 and life is so easy.I work in a pet store and it is so hard!I have to wake up at midnight every day and fly my car to the store. It takes so long to get there. It takes me 20 seconds to get to the store in Mississippi from my home in Florida! At work,I have to push 5 buttons and then I go home.It takes 2 seconds and that is like forever.
—Morgan
In the year 2500,I think we will have invented cars that run on things we don’t need like garbage.Tail gas will smell like whatever you like such as chocolate.I also predict that buildings will be able to go into a different dimension(维) so your car won’t hit them. The cars in 2 500 don’t fly,for we haven’t got that technology yet,but they can hover(盘旋) up to seven feet. These cars are made for speed!
—Carly
Instead of cars,we may have hovering devices that float around. We could also have electric cars instead of gas-powered cars.Food might be more healthy. What I believe is that the environment will change the most. The environmental changes will also determine many other changes. If more people try to help the environment, then perhaps in 2 500 we will have more forests and wildlife. If people won’t help the environment, then we will have no forests and little wildlife left.
—Roberta

Last year,a report by a committee of education experts said a lot of American students cannot write well. The report noted the concerns of business leaders and teachers. The experts said more students should have to pass a writing test before they can finish high school. They pointed out that major college entrance tests are changing now to include a writing part.
Educators know that teaching students to write well is not easy. One problem is the amount of time needed to read through large amounts of work.So some companies have developed computer programs. These can grade student writing much more quickly than a person can.Writing tests can also cost less to administer by computer than by paper-and-pencil.These computer systems are known as e-readers.They use artificial intelligence to think in a way like teachers. In the state of Indiana, computer grading of a statewide writing test began with a test of the system itself. For two years, both a computer and humans graded the student writing.Officials say there was almost no difference between the computer grades and those given by the human readers.
The entrance test commonly used by business schools, the GMAT,already uses e-readers.The GRE and TOEFL tests might start;officials are deciding. The GRE is the Graduate Record Examination.TOEFL is the Test of English as a Foreign Language.
Systems are also being used to grade writing in college classes. The computers read a few hundred examples of student writing already graded by humans. Then the systems compare new essays against those already examined.
How do teachers feel about all this? Many say machines can never do the job as well as people can.A computer can find spelling and grammar mistakes. But these teachers say it can never really understand what a writer is trying to say.Critics say a program cannot follow a thought or judge humor or understand a beautifully expressed idea.
But inventors of the programs say computer grading guarantees that each piece of writing is graded in the same way. They also say the systems are meant to judge knowledge more than creativity.
1.What do the teachers think of the computer systems?
A.They think highly of the computer systems.
B.They think that computers cannot grade writing as well as people.
C.They believe that computers can understand a writer’s idea well.
D.They are glad computers will spare their effort to correct students’ schoolwork.
2.What can we conclude from Paragraph 1?
A.American students’ writing ability is being improved.
B.American students’ writing ability is not satisfactory.
C.Business leaders and teachers are not worried about students’ writing.
D.All college entrance tests will include a writing part.
3.Which of the following is NOT the advantage of e-readers?
A.Saving much of teachers’ time.
B.Saving a lot of money.
C.Being fair and objective.
D.Appreciating humor and beauty.
4.The best title for this passage might be ________.
A.Computer-Graded Writing
B.Human-Graded Writing

The old-fashioned general store is fast disappearing. This is,perhaps,a pity, because shopping today seems to lack that personal elements which existed when the shopkeeper knew all his regular customers personally. He could, for instance, remember which brand of tea Mrs.Smith usually bought or what sort of washing powder Mrs.Jones preferred. Not only was the shop a center of buying and selling, but a social meeting place.
A prosperous(繁荣的) general store might have employed four or five assistants, and so there were very few problems in management as far as the staff(全体职员) was concerned. But now that the supermarket has replaced the general store, the job of the manager has changed completely. The modern supermarket manager has to cope with a staff of as many as a hundred, apart from all the other everyday problems of running a large business.
Every morning the manager must, like the commander of an army division, carry out an inspection of his store to make sure that everything is ready for the business of the day.He must see that everything is running smoothly. He will have to give advice and make decisions as problems arise, and he must know how to get his huge staff to work efficiently with their respective responsibilities. No matter what he has to do throughout the day,the supermarket manager must be ready for any emergency that may arise. They say in the trade that you are not really an experienced supermarket manager until you have dealt with a flood,a fire,a birth and a death in your store.
1.The main purpose of the passage is to show________.
A.how the supermarket has replaced the old general store
B.how the old-fashioned general store is fast disappearing
C.how supermarket managers deal with problems every morning
D.how the role of the shop manager has undergone an overall change
2.It is a pity that there are fewer old general stores now because________.
A.there is less trading business
B.there used to be more social activities in the old days
C.supermarket managers have more problems
D.there is less personal contact between managers and customers
3.Who are Mrs.Smith and Mrs.Jones mentioned in the first paragraph?
A.People representing any of the customers of the old general store.
B.Shop assistants.
C.Friends of the shop manager’s.
D.Two regular customers of the store.

A.a military leader

Say you are a 17th century construction worker who has worked long and hard to build a splendid tower for the dead wife of your emperor.
Now say that the emperor orders your fingertips cut off so you can never build another one.Yes,that is the Taj Mahal, one of the most famous buildings in the world. And the tale behind the construction is just as the building itself.
First, there’s the emperor of northern India,Jehan, also called the King of the world. In 1612,Jehan married Mumtaz. They had 14 children over the next 20 years. But then sadness came.As Mumtaz was about to give birth to child number 14,she said she had heard her unborn baby cry out.It was a sign of death. And as Mumtaz lay dying, she asked Jehan to build a lasting memorial to celebrate their love.So Jehan ordered his wife’s dying wish carried out.More than 20,000 workers labored nearly 22 years to complete the construction. In 1653,Jehan placed Mumtaz’s remains in the centre under the building. And then, son number five,Aurangzeb, murdered his brothers and took over the power from his aging father.Jehan lived the rest of his days—eight years,to be exact—imprisoned not far from the Taj Mahal.Jehan was only allowed to climb onto the top of his prison to see the treasure from a distance. But never again would he be allowed to visit it—until he was buried next to his wife.
Now 25,000 people visit the Taj Mahal each day.

Alexander said he went to Japan for adventure.“I’ve always really liked learning languages, and Japan has such a unique culture,” he said.He attended school in the Kyoto of Japan from March to August. In addition to being more crowded,Japan was much easier to get around because of mass transit(公共交通).“People do rely on cars a lot here,” he said,“while it’s all about the trains there. You have to push your way into the trains because they are so crowded.”
Japanese students usually wear uniforms,Ueda said, and have set curriculums(课程) that are light on options and heavy on academics(学习).The teachers are also much stricter than the ones here.“They don’t say any jokes and they’re always wearing suits,” he said.“They’re always angry at students,” he added. He was really hungry that day so he tried to take an early bite of rice from his lunch. The teacher found that and smacked him on the head.Alexander said he’d like to go back to Japan, and recommend(推荐) exchange programs for anyone interested in new languages.Ueda will go back home in 10 months. He said he wasn’t sure what he’d miss about Canada when he returns, but said it probably wouldn’t be the winter.

Women are avoiding academic careers in math-intensive fields because the lifestyle is consistent with motherhood, researchers at Cornell University found in a study to be published next month in American Scientist Magazine.
Universities have long been criticized for hiring and evaluation policies that discriminate against women, but the findings of this new study point to the female biological clock as a main reason why so few women end up as professors in fields such as math, engineering, physics and computer science.
A woman who wants a family looks at the tough path to a tenured(终身的) position and considers how old she will be before she can start a family and how little time she will have to raise her children. Many of those women choose a more flexible career.
“Universities have been largely inflexible about anything other than the standard timetable, which means you’ll have to struggle for years and only then would you consider getting pregnant(怀孕的),” said
Wendy Williams,a human development professor at Cornell who co-authored the study with her husband,Stephen Ceci.
Williams and Ceci analyzed data about the academic careers of men and women with and without children. Before women became mothers, they had careers equal to or more successful than their male peers. But once they gave birth, the dynamic changed.
Women in other academic fields such as the humanities and social sciences face similar problems and often leave academic as well. But because there are so many women in those Ph.D.programs,enough finally stay to amount to a critical mass of female professors.
In math-heavy fields, however, women make up a tiny minority of the graduate students. So when the rare few who make it through a Ph.D.program leave because universities are not concerned about their needs as mothers at all,the net result is almost no women represented on faculty rosters(教师名单),the study said.

How to Graduate from College with a High
GPA (Grade Point Average)
One Hour a Day
One of the most challenging things about college is time management. It’s not that you don’t have enough. In fact you usually have too much time, and as a result time gets wasted. If you take good notes in class, and spend one hour reviewing your notes every day before going to sleep, you make use of the power of the subconscious(下意识) to absorb information and by the time exams come around you’ll know all the materials on a subconscious level, and you don’t have to sit up the night before exams.Considering the amount of free time you usually have in college, one hour a day is not much in view of the long-term benefits.
Select Easy Courses
In your first term of college, load up on as many “easy A’s” as possible. There are several reasons for this. The first term of college is full of excitement as it is,and there are probably even more today than ever thanks to Facebook,Twitter, and more. The last thing you want to do is add difficult coursework to this. The other reason why selecting easy courses is powerful is that it allows you to start off your college career with an extremely high GPA.Good grades have less and less of an impact on your GPA later in your college career and raising your GPA becomes much more difficult.Selecting easy courses in the first term also leaves room for the occasional failure when coursework becomes more challenging.
Join (or Form) Study Groups
If you go to a large public school where classes often have 700 plus people, study groups are an extremely effective way to ensure good grades.Study groups are often led by older students who have taken the course and received A’s in that particular course. They also often provide you with resources such as practice tests, practice problems, and many others that might not be provided by professors.
Use Personal Development
I can honestly say I didn’t involve myself in personal development when I was in college.Looking back I realize that I suffered from low self-respect and a very unhealthy self-image.Without doubt this had a negative impact on my GPA.But,if I had combined personal development techniques with the three steps above,my college career would have turned out very different.
If you have already started school,I recommend developing a strategy that applies these four ideas to your current schedule. If you haven’t started school yet,do some research on easier courses and what study groups might be available. If you follow through and commit to the four recommendations above, you’ll set yourself up for a very successful first term, and hopefully a very successful college career.Good luck to all of you starting the college journey.

Wen Jiabao arrived in Singapore yesterday for an official visit to the country. It is the first visit by a Chinese premier to Singapore in eight years. In the arrival statement,Wen said he is looking forward to the meeting with Singapore on ways to deepen East Asian cooperation between two nations so as to contribute to the building of a peaceful, harmonious relationship.
Premier Wen Jiabao and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong agreed to jointly develop an environmentally friendly city in northeastern China. The city will be a model for sustainable development,a Singapore government statement said. The “Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city” will be developed by a joint venture formed by Chinese and Singapore companies.“This eco-city,to be built in Tianjin, will become another highlight in our relations,” Wen said after signing an agreement with Lee,who agreed,“On the Singapore side,on all levels,we’ll give this project our full support.”
The two sides will share expertise and experience in urban planning, environmental protection, resources conservation, recycling, use of renewable resources and wastewater reuse.China’s economic planning agency issued a set of guidelines earlier this month welcoming foreign investment in environmentally friendly areas such as recycling,“clean” industries and environmental protection.
Bilateral relations between China and Singapore have seen big progress even though the two countries established diplomatic ties only 17 years ago,Wen said during his talks with Lee.
China and Singapore have also kept close contact and coordination on regional issues,he added.Wen said China and Singapore are both important Asian countries that share common interests in many areas.

It is an all too familiar story.A natural disaster strikes in a remote part of the world, causing destruction and suffering.Villages are flattened and people are forced into camps. It is now happening in China, after the earthquake of magnitude(里氏) 8 that was centered on Wenchuan but shook the entire country.
Actually,in the past centuries, there were hundreds of thousands of earthquakes in different parts of the world. In Sept.1923,Tokyo and Yokohama were both destroyed by an earthquake and the fires that followed it.They had to be completely rebuilt. One of the most serious earthquakes was in China’s Shanxi Province in 1556.It claimed almost one million people.
We measure an earthquake’s strength on the Richter scale. The Richter scale was introduced in 1935 in Southern California in the USA.It measures earthquakes on a scale of one to ten.Any earthquake measuring five or more is usually serious.
The earth’s crust(地壳) is made up of layers of rock called plates. As these plates move, they sometimes crash against each other, causing the crust to quake. In cities such as Tokyo, where small quakes happen quite often, many modern buildings are designed to be flexible so when the earth moves, they move with it.
Earthquakes can also break up gas or oil pipes. This can cause fires to break out, which can do as much damage as the earthquake itself.
Another effect of the earthquakes is tsunamis(海啸).These are huge waves created by earthquakes beneath the sea. They can be many meters high and cause great damage to costal towns and cities.
China,Japan,Russia and the USA have the highest occurrence of earthquakes in the world.

The New York City Marathon was started by a man named Fred Lebow. It began in 1970 as a small, unimportant race.Only 127 local people ran,and just 55 of them finished. They ran around Central Park four times.Few people watched them run. However, over the years the marathon grew and became more popular.
Today people come from all over the world to run in the marathon.Runners must be at least 18 years old.In fact, the oldest runner was an 89-year-old man.Recently, more than 27,000 people ran in the New York City Marathon.Large crowds cheered the runners and offered them cold drinks and encouragement.
The course of the marathon has changed.Instead of running around Central Park, the runners go through the five districts of New York City:Queens,Brooklyn,Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island. The marathon begins at the base of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge in Staten Island. The runners go across the bridge into Brooklyn. Then they go up through Queens and into the Bronx. The marathon finishes in Central Park in Manhattan. The complete course is 26.2 miles, and takes the best runners less than 3 hours.
Although it has changed since 1970,the New York City Marathon is always exciting.Through the years, many unusual events have happened during the marathon. For example,Pat Tuz and John Weibaker got married a few minutes before the race. Then they ran the race with their party members. Some people run the whole race alone.
In the fall of 1992,Fred Lebow, the founder of the New York City Marathon, slowly ran his last race.He was very ill with cancer, but he did not want to stop running. In October 1994,Fred died. However, the New York City Marathon, and all its excitement, will continue for many years to come.

Sometimes our inner darkness leads us to do things that affect the world in a positive way.Once upon a time there lived a woman who had a bad temper. She shouted at everyone around her.For most of her life she believed it was everyone else’s mistake.
She went to see a well-respected Buddhist monk(和尚) to ask for advice. The monk said,“It’s hot outside, and that’s a busy road with lots of passers-by.When a passer-by passes, you must offer him a glass of water.Do this until there is no anger left inside you.”
So she stood outside with a water jug and served water to passers-by every day for the next several weeks. And every morning she asked herself if she would still be angry. And every morning the answer was,“yes.” So she continued serving water.Until this afternoon when a man walked up,snatched(抢) the water jug out of her hand, drank directly out of it,and then threw the jug on the ground as he continued on his way.
Unable to contain herself, the woman picked up the jug off the ground and, with all her might, threw it at the man as he walked away.It was a direct hit.The jug broke into pieces over the back of his head and he fell to the ground, unconscious and bleeding(出血并失去知觉).
As the woman calmed down, she realized what she had done and began to cry.She used a payphone to call 911 and report the incident. An ambulance and two police cars arrived at the scene moments later. As the doctors carried the man onto the ambulance, the police handcuffed(戴手铐) his arms and legs. Then one of the police officers walked over to the woman, who was still crying, and said,“The city owes you a big ‘thank you’.That man has been on our most wanted list for over a year now.He is a primary suspect(主要嫌疑人) in multiple murder cases.”

It was a winter morning, just a couple of weeks before Christmas 2005.While most people were warming up their cars,Trevor,my husband, had to get up early to ride his bike four kilometers away from home to work.On arrival,he parked his bike outside the back door as he usually does. After putting in 10 hours of labor,he returned to find his bike gone.
The bike,a black Kona 18 speed, was our only transport.Trevor used it to get to work, putting in 60-hour weeks to support his young family. And the bike was also used to get groceries, saving us from having to walk long distances from where we live.
I was so sad that someone would steal our bike that I wrote to the newspaper and told them our story.Shortly after that several people in our area offered to help. One wonderful stranger even bought a bike, then called my husband to pick it up.Once again my husband had a way to get to and from his job.It really is an honor that a complete stranger would go out of their way for someone they have never met before.
People say that a smile can be passed from one person to another, but acts of kindness from strangers are even more so.This experience has had a spreading effect in our lives because it strengthened our faith in humanity(人性) as a whole. And it has influenced us to be more mindful of ways we,too, can share with others. No matter how big or how small,an act of kindness shows that someone cares. And the results can be everlasting.
64.Why was the bike so important to the couple?
A.The man’s job was bike racing.

67.What do the couple learn from their experience?

B.One should take care of their bike.
C.News reports make people famous.
D.An act of kindness can mean a lot.
D
It is often argued that one of the most common differences between the British and American sense of humour is that Americans don’t understand irony(反语).Simon Pegg explores this topic in depth in his article What are you laughing at?He concludes that this statement isn’t true and I quite agree with him.
One of the differences seems to be how often both nations use irony. The British use irony on a daily basis, whereas Americans don’t.I think Americans understand British irony;what they don’t understand is the need to use it so frequently. When Americans use irony they want to state that they are “only kidding”.They feel the need to make a joke more obvious than the British do;maybe this results from a fear of offending people.
I think the differences between the British and American sense of humour arise from a cultural difference between the two.American jokes are more open,a bit like Americans themselves.British jokes,on the other hand, are more reserved(含蓄的).There is usually a hidden meaning.
Certain American comedies have gained huge success in Britain and vice versa(反之亦然).Therefore, although there are differences between both comic styles, there is still an appreciation and understanding of the other sense of humour. Both the British and American versions(版本) of the comedy The Office are hugely successful on both sides of the Atlantic. Both shows have their own cultural differences, yet they describe a lifestyle which both Americans and the British can relate to in a similar way.
68.The writer believes that________.
A.Americans don’t understand irony when communicating with the British
B.the British use irony as well as Americans do in many ways
C.there are huge differences between the British and American sense of humour
D.Americans use less irony because they don’t want to offend others
69.According to the text,Americans have no idea________.
A.when and how to use irony
B.where and why to use irony
C.whether it is necessary to use irony often
D.whether it is easy to understand irony
70.What is the main cause of the differences between the British and American sense of humour?
A.Culture.
B.Lifestyle.
C.Historical development.
D.Geographical location.
71.The comedy The office is given as an example to show that________.
A.American comedies have gained more success than those in Britain
B.the British and Americans can understand the same comedy of different forms
C.the same comedy can be performed totally differently in different countries
D.the differences between British and American comedies are becoming greater

We thought we had it all—a beautiful house, three healthy children and one more on the way,two cars,a couple of four-wheelers for entertainment—and we loved it.Then, the market turned and my husband’s job at a construction company was gone. The company was closing down for good.
We both started looking for jobs right away, but there weren’t any to be found. With each passing day we were getting increasingly worried and we continued to work together in order to pull our family through.The_more_we_pulled_together,the_closer_we_got.I felt feelings of admiration for my husband that I hadn’t felt in years.
That’s why it was so hard for me to watch him blame himself for our present situation.I continually asked him to stop, but he seemed to want to punish himself for not having a job.
Finally, one afternoon I pulled him aside and said,“We have four healthy children. That’s what’s important. That makes you a rich man.”
“But what if we lose the house? They’ll hate me—you’ll hate me,” he replied.
I smiled at him and put my hands on both sides of his face to make him look at me in the eye.“No matter where we live I will be happy—as long as I have you.”I smiled again. In all the struggling together I had found that deep love for him that I had on the day we said “I do”.
I could see his shoulders and neck relaxed. He held me close and we were able to talk and plan and dream together in a way that we hadn’t for quite some time.It was a turning point for us as a couple and a family.
We are still struggling for our better life, but I consider us well-off because we have something that money can’t buy and no one can take away from us.
72.The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 means that ________.
A.the couple became closer as they struggled together
B.the couple hoped to find jobs in the same company
C.neither of the couple had the courage to face difficulty
D.the couple were trying to make their relationship closer
73.Why was it hard for the author to watch her husband blame himself?
A.She was the one that should be blamed.
B.She thought he had tried his best.
C.She thought he would get a job someday.
D.She thought this would remind her of sad memories.
74.Which of the following can best describe the couple’s present life?

Traveling to all corners of the world gets easier and easier. We live in a global village, but this doesn’t mean that we all behave in the same way.
How should you behave when you meet someone for the first time?An American shakes your hand firmly while looking you straight in the eye.In many parts of Asia, there is no physical contact(接触) at all.In Japan, you should bow,and the more respect you want to show, the deeper you should bow.In Thailand, people greet each other by pressing both hands together at the chest. In both countries, eye contact is avoided as a sign of respect.
Many countries have rules about what you should and shouldn’t wear.In Muslim countries, you shouldn’t reveal(显露) the body, especially women, who should wear long blouses and skirts. In Korea, you should take off your shoes when entering a house.Remember to place them neatly together where you came in.
In Spain, lunch is often the biggest meal of the day,and can last two or three hours. For this reason many people eat a light breakfast and a late dinner. In Mexico, lunch is a time to relax, and many people prefer not to discuss business as they eat.In Britain,it’s not unusual to have a business meeting over breakfast.
In most countries,an exchange of business cards is necessary for all introductions. You should include your company name and your position. If you are going to a country where your language is not widely spoken, you can get the back side of your card printed in the local language. In China, you may present your card with the writing facing the person you are giving it to.

Dear Editor,
We have done some research about migrant schools in our city lately and we are shocked to see the environment of the schools is so poor. The schools have no modern equipment,no playground,no library, and even no enough teachers. All those problems are due to one key point—the lack of money, which, therefore, leads to a huge difference in education even for kids in the same city.
And yet,the good thing we saw is that migrant kids are just as keen on study as us.Can we do something to help them? Yes.Our government can pour more money into migrant schools;our community resources can be made use of;city students can help collect money or do book donations to them. There are a lot more things we can do.
I do hope that the whole society can care more about migrant kids.If everybody contributes a bit, migrant kids can surely enjoy equal education opportunity.
Yours,
