The Beijing government has set out to recruit thousands of university graduates to work as junior officials in rural areas to both improve rural administration and ease the city’s employment problems.
The government plans to recruit 3,000 university graduates this year,1,000 more than last year,to work as assistants to village heads or Party secretaries in suburban areas.
People interested in jobs in Beijing’s rural villages and townships can submit applications to Beijing Personnel Bureau or online at www.bjbys.com from February 1 to March 15.
“We hope university graduates will seize this opportunity to use their knowledge in rural villages and to start their careers,” Sun Zhenyu, deputy director of Beijing Personnel Bureau, told Xinhua News Agency.
“The government has promised successful candidates a monthly salary of 2,000 yuan ($250) in the first year,2,500 yuan ($320) the second year and 3,000 yuan ($385) the third year, provided their performance is up to the required standards,”Sun said.

Nationwide, about 150,000 university graduates found employment in rural areas last year, according to figures provided by the Ministry of Education.
The ministry predicts that 4.95 million students will graduate from universities across the country this year,820,000 more than last year.About 1.4 million of them are unlikely to find jobs when they graduate.

任务型读写
When difficult people express themselves orally, they generally want at least two things:they’ve been heard and they’ve been understood. As a good communicator should be a good listener, five steps are advocated toward good listening.
The first step is cooperating. How does a difficult person know that you’re listening and understanding? In fact,it’s through the way you look and sound while he is talking. You may help him to fully express his thoughts and feelings. You do this by nodding your head in agreement, making certain sounds of understanding.
When the person begins to repeat what’s been said,it’s a signal of step two:turning back.It means that you repeat some words he is using, sending a clear signal that you’re listening carefully and that you think what he is saying is important.
Having heard what he has to say,the next step is clarifying. At this point, you start to gather information about what is being communicated.Ask some open-ended questions, which will allow you to figure out what intention he is hoping to satisfy.
The fourth step is to summarize what you’ve heard. This allows you to make sure that both you and the difficult person are on the same page. When you do this, two things happen.First,if you’ve missed something,he can fill in the details.Second, you’ve shown that you’re making an effort to understand completely. This increases the possibility of gaining cooperation from him.
Having listened carefully, you’ve now arrived at the point of confirming with the person that he feels satisfied that his thoughts have been fully voiced.Ask if he feels understood.
When enough sincere listening, questioning, and remembering are brought together, understanding is usually achieved and a difficult person becomes less difficult and more cooperative.
Topic
1.________________ to Understand
Reason
Difficult people hope they have been heard and 2.________ when they express themselves.
3.______________ on listening
◆4.________ in agreement and make some sounds of understanding while a difficult person is speaking.
◆Repeat some 5.________ that you have heard.
◆Collect information about the person’s expressions and find his 6.________.
◆Give a 7.________ of what the person has said.
◆Confirm that the person gains 8.________ from speaking his thoughts.
Result
A difficult person will be 9.________ to cooperate with if understanding is achieved.
Comment
You may unlock the doors to difficult people’s 10.____________ after you listen and understand.

Criminals have come up with a new fraud (欺诈) targeting the chip and PIN cards used by shop and petrol station customers across the country. They are stealing card-reading machine, taking them apart and installing (安装) devices which record card numbers and the PIN,before returning them to the store. The installed devices are so hi-tech that they can transmit customers’ card details to a mobile phone.Cards are then cloned and used abroad in countries including the United States,Italy and Australia where cash machines do not have to read the unique microchip in British cards.
Police have issued a warning about the fraud after arresting two men at a card-faking factory in Birmingham.A search of a house found stolen chip and the PIN terminals, card account numbers, card readers and fake magnetic stripe cards.
The criminals targeted shops by forcing staff to give them the card machines or getting a job there themselves. In some cases, they posed as engineers and took the machine away for an “upgrade”.
Card fraud abroad has increased by 77 percent, and cost £ 207.6 million in the past year. While fraudsters used to put pinhole cameras above the chip and PIN device to get hold of the number, they now use the chip and the PIN terminal to get that basic data. They are getting hold of the PIN from inside the reader.Police said the Birmingham factory had stolen card machines from 30 shops, supermarkets and petrol stations across the country. These arrests are a significant development in the fight against the organized criminal gangs responsible for this type of fraud.

Is early childhood education really necessary?Early childhood education primarily focuses on learning through playing to develop the child’s physical, sensory, communicational and social development.Early childhood education has become a concern of the government, who pushes poor children to be formally trained before they are old enough for kindergarten.
There are good reasons for the government to push early childhood education.Studies have shown that orphaned children who did not receive good care and education become developmentally delayed causing failure in school, and even in life.Further studies show that poor children who take part in Head Start programs are more prepared for school, less likely to end up in Special Education classes, and are less likely to receive public help or go to jail.
There are also negative parts to putting a child in formal education programs too early.Time Magazine online explains that “The younger the child, the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work.” I have personally witnessed many children of my generation who went to Head Start programs become frustrated and bored with school before they finished high school.Yet parents have been sure that the earlier the child starts school, the better off he or she is,so they push their children to start school earlier.
Actually while early formal education of poor children does show great gains in the early elementary years, studies also show that this head start is really a “false start”,as the gains are lost in middle and high school years. It seems that environment is a bigger factor on life’s success than early education.Head Start programs have not achieved its original goal in closing the achievement gap in poor and middle school children.Perhaps it is time to find other ways to close that gap.
1.According to the studies, which of the following is TRUE?
A.Children with good early education may have a rich life.
B.The orphaned children are usually unhappy in their life.
C.Children without early education can do well at school.
D.Head Start programs are helpful to the poor children.
2.“The younger the child, the less his chances of catching up with first-grade work.” suggests that ________.
A.the early childhood education is helpless to the child’s grade
B.it is good for the young children to receive early education
C.the early education can help the children follow the grade
D.the younger the children are,the more clever they will be
3.The author’s attitude toward the early childhood education is ________.
A.puzzling B.objective
C.indifferent D.approving
4.The main idea of the last passage is that ________.
A.the early childhood education is very necessary
B.Head Start programs have helped the children a lot
C.environment is the most important to life’s success
D.better ways should be found to help the poor children

What will man be like in the future—in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now?We can only make guesses,of course, but we can be sure that he will be different from what he is today, for man is slowly changing all the time.
Let us take an obvious example.Man,even five hundred years ago,was shorter than he is today. Now,on average, men are about three inches taller.Five hundred years is relatively a short period of time,so we may assume that man will continue to grow taller.Again,in the modern world we use our brains a great deal.Even so,we still make use of only about 20% of the brain’s capacity. As time goes on,however,we shall have to use our brains more and more, and eventually we shall need larger ones! This is likely to bring about a physical change to the head,in particular, the forehead will grow larger.
Nowadays our eyes are in constant use.In fact,we use them so much that very often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man’s eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand,we tend to make less use of our arms and legs. These,as a result, are likely to grow weaker. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life.
But what about hair? This will probably disappear from the body altogether in course of time because it does not serve a useful purpose any longer. In the future, then, both sexes are likely to be bald.
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to look at!This may well be true. All the same,in spite of all these changes, future man will still have a lot in common with us.He will still be a human being, with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.
56.The passage mainly tells us that ________.
A.man’s life will be different in the future
B.future man will look quite different from us
C.man is growing taller and uglier as time passes
D.man’s organs’ functions will be on the wane
57.What serves as the evidence that man is changing?
A.Man has got stronger eyes now than he ever had.
B.Man’s hair is getting thinner and thinner.
C.Man’s arms and legs have become lighter and weaker.
D.Man has been growing taller over the past 500 years.
58.Which of the following is TRUE about a human being in the future?
A.He is hairless because hair is no longer useful.
B.He has smaller eyes and wears better glasses.
C.His fingers grow weaker because he doesn’t have to make use of them.
D.He thinks and feels in different ways.
59.It is implied that ________.
A.human beings will become less attractive in the future
B.less use of a bodily organ may lead to its degeneration
C.human beings hope for a change in the future life
D.future life is always predictable

Nuclear-powered aircraft carriers are considered one of the most important marine weapons in the 20th century. So far, only two countries in the world, the USA and France, have ever produced them. But these fearful fighting machines are about to enter Asia.
The US Navy said last month that one of its nine nuclear-powered aircraft carriers will be sent to Japan to replace the diesel(柴油)-powered carrier Kitty Hawk in 2008.In an agreement on October 30,the two countries also plan to level up their military cooperation and the USA called for Japan to take a larger role in alliance military moves.
It will be the first time that a nuclear-powered carrier is based in Japan.Bombed by US forces in World War Ⅱ at Hiroshima and Nagasaki,Japan is the only world country to have been attacked by a nuclear weapon. Therefore, the citizens are highly sensitive to where nuclear-powered weapons are based.
“A radiation leak at Yokosuka would kill 100,000 people as far away as Tokyo, and could cause billions of dollars in damage,” said Masahiko Goto, leader of a protest group in Yokosuka. His group has collected more than 300,000 signatures of people across Japan opposed to the nuclear carrier.
The 44-year-old Kitty Hawk, the US navy’s oldest active ship, has been based in Yokosuka since 1998.It had returned to the US to be decommissioned in 2008.The new carrier, yet to be unveiled, will travel faster,be capable of supporting longer operations and carry with it the Navy’s most modern technology.
Experts pointed that this change is not only to strengthen the US-Japan military alliance but also to keep the military power of China and North Korea within limits. However, even Japanese experts don’t believe that the two countries are threats to the region.
“There is no need for Japan to have a nuclear carrier as defense,” said Tetsuo Maeda,an international relations professor at Tokyo International University. He said that the change of ship indicates an increased military capability in the region, much more than what is needed.
60.With such a formidable weapon to enter its country,Japanese citizens ________.
A.are aware of its benefits to the country
B.are anxious about its potential danger
C.are curious about the advanced technology
D.are against where the carrier will be based

A.no other countries except the USA and France possess aircraft carriers

Sure, you’ve watched extreme pet sports on Animal Planet. But did you know that there’s a whole world of athletic activities for dogs right in our area?
There are some reasons for considering taking part in such activities.Such sports strengthen the close feelings between dog and owner, and also benefit your pup’s body and mind.“Dogs that are tied with chains often have behavioral problems,” says Lee Morgan.“They love to go out and play as much as we do.”
Of course, many of these sports require some amount of practice, and some breeds are simply better at certain activities than others. But all dogs can participate in the following games.
Frisbee Dogs
This sport requires you to throw as many Frisbees as your dog can catch in a 60-second time period. The further out your dog catches the Frisbee, the more points you rack up.Extra points are awarded if your pet catches the Frisbee while it’s still in the air.Mid Atlantic Disc Dogs (MAD-Dogs) hosts local competitions and offers informal instruction in local parks or even in people’s backyards.
Flyball Dogs
The sport has been around since 1970s.Flyball is a relay race with four dogs in a team. Each must jump four hurdles (跨栏) spaced with 10 feet apart and then land on a spring-loaded box that shoots out a tennis ball. The dog must then catch the ball and run back over the four hurdles.Once that’s done, the next dog can go.The first team that successfully completes the course wins the competition. There are a number of local teams, including 4 Dog Night, which holds classes for beginners and intermediate players and is always looking for new team members. The Beltway Bandits is another team, based in Leesburg, that hosts private classes and competitions.
64.Dogs that are always tied with chains often have behavioral problems because ________.
A.there are no close feelings between dog and owner

The students and their robots competed at the FIRST Championship at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.FIRST is the short way of saying the organization’s complete name:For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology.
Almost 1,700 high school teams entered a level of competition called LUNACY.
In January, the organization sent supplies for robots to each team. Each team had six weeks to build robots that could compete in the LUNACY game. The playing area had six robots on each team. Each robot had another vehicle,or trailer (拖车),connected to it.The robots had to pick up large balls and throw them into the trailers of opposing robots. The robots were moving on a surface where they could slide. An alliance (联盟) of teams from California,Illinois and Michigan won the LUNACY competition.
A second competition involved building a robot that could travel on uneven surfaces, move objects with unusual shapes and resist physical stress.
Another competition was for younger students, aged from 9 to 14.They had to design, build and program robots to explore the Earth’s climate.
American inventor Dean Kamen started FIRST in 1989.The organization holds robot competitions around the world. It offers programs that help young people learn more about science, technology, engineering and mathematics, which build life skills. Many companies provide support to the organization.
Mister Kamen says the goal is about more than building robots. He says the student competitors showed they could deal with difficult technological problems. And,he says that is good news because the world needs creative thinkers to help with increasingly complex problems in the future.

More than 40 years have passed since US President Barack Obama came to Indonesia for the first time, but the memories of his former childhood home came flooding back during a state visit to Jakarta on Tuesday.Obama received a warm welcome from many locals after spending four years in Jakarta as a child, when his mother married an Indonesian man. When asked how it felt to be back he said things had changed a lot.
“When I first came here,it was 1967.People were on becaks, which—for those of you who aren’t familiar—is a bicycle-rickshaw thing,” he said,“If they weren’t on becaks, they were on bemos, which were sort of like little taxis where you stood at the back and it was very crowded,”Obama said, gesturing vividly and drawing a smile from Indonesian President Susilo.“My understanding is that traffic now in Jakarta is pretty tough,”he said, before admitting that he had not experienced it.Now as a president, the streets usually packed with new sports vehicles and Japanese cars had been cleared for him.
Obama’s motorcade (车队),met by a sudden shower, had sped quickly through quiet Jakarta streets.Obama held a press conference and carried on the conversation with Susilo, together with his wife Michelle,at a state dinner where he was served his favorite childhood dishes of fried rice, meatball soup and fruit.
In an after-dinner speech that drew warm applause,he described how his mother travelled from village to village by motorbike.“I could never imagine I would one day be honored here, and never mind as President of the United States.I didn’t think I would be stepping into this building, ever,”he said, recalling his life here as a boy.The Indonesian president also recalled Obama’s youth, playing in fields that are now high-rises,or with the monkey or baby crocodiles he had as pets as a boy. Many ordinary Indonesians regard Obama as a long-lost son,and his old school in suburb Menteng has a statue of him as a boy at the entrance.
Obama, who aims to use the trip to reach out to the wider Muslim world, said his feelings toward Indonesians had not changed.“I feel a great affection for the people here,” he said, adding that he hoped to return with his two daughters one day.

C.new sports vehicles and Japanese cars
D.Obama’s motorcade and double-buses
73.We can infer from the 4th paragraph that______.
A.Obama dreamed to be back as a president
B.Obama’s old school is fairly proud of him
C.Susilo and Obama played with the monkey
D.Obama is a long-lost son of the Indonesians
74.The purpose of Obama’s visit to Indonesia is to________.
A.get in touch with the wider Muslim world
B.call on his mother and Indonesian father
C.bring back memories of old school friends
D.show off his own great success and power
75.The best title for this passage is________.
A.The Relationship Between the US and Indonesia
B.The President’s Speech During His Visit in Indonesia

In the past 100 years Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing U.S. minority. As their children began moving up through the nation’s schools,it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was forming.Their achievements are reflected in the nation’s best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on an Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their education abroad arrived in the U.S. with a solid grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the promise of a good job after college.Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more objectively. And the return on the investment in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree.
Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are determined that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework.Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do,and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian culture that promotes success, such as ideals that stress family values and emphasize education.
Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they form a typical racial image. Many can remember when Chinese,Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social separation.Indeed,it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.

A survey about the relationship between students and teachers, family members or classmates is being made by a research study group of our school.Generally speaking,we are getting on well with each other. However, there exist some problems. Some students are easy to lose their temper because of anxiety and study burden.Sometimes they are too self-centered.What’s worse, they sometimes quarrel with others, and even turn a deaf ear to their parents and teachers and speak against their parents and teachers, which is very disappointing.
In my opinion,we middle school students should make our efforts to improve the situation.First,we should respect our parents and teachers as well as our classmates.Second, when we are not feeling happy,we can have a heart-to-heart chat with our friends or teachers or even parents. It is likely that they can understand us better and give us some reasonable advice.
