Pierre is a 25-year-old penguin at the California Academy of Sciences. The species of penguin is accustomed to warm climates, unlike many of its cousins. These birds at the academy are nicknamed “Jackass penguins” because they make sounds similar to donkeys’,quite frightened the first time you hear it there.Early this year Pierre was going bald (光秃) due to his old age, which made him feel too cold to swim in the pool. Therefore, biologists at the academy had a wetsuit created for this penguin to help him get back in the swimming pool.
Unlike marine mammals, which have a layer of blubber (海兽脂) to keep them warm, penguins depend on their waterproof feathers.Without them,Pierre was unwilling to jump into the swimming pool and ended up shivering on the side of the pool while his 19 peers played in the water.
“He was cold;he would shake,” said Pam Schaller,a senior biologist.Schaller first tried a heat lamp to keep Pierre warm. Then she got another idea:if wetsuits keep humans warm in the cold Pacific, why not make one for Pierre?
Schaller designed the suit, which covered Pierre’s body and had small openings for his flippers (脚蹼).
“I walked behind him and looked at where there were any gaps, and cut and refitted and cut and refitted until it looked like it was extremely suitable,” she said.
One concern was that the other penguins would reject Pierre in his new suit, but in fact, they accepted his new look.He swam freely and got along with others well, although he was the only penguin with a black stomach.
Schaller couldn’t say for sure whether the wetsuit allowed Pierre to recover his fine feathers, but “certainly we were able to keep him comfortable during a period of time that would have been difficult for him to stay comfortable”.
1.Pierre felt too cold to swim in the pool because of ________.
A.not having a layer of blubber
B.having few feathers due to old age
C.having no wetsuit
D.other penguins rejecting him
2.The idea of making a wetsuit for Pierre came from ________.
A.total invention
B.the use of wetsuits on humans
C.the use of heat lamps
D.waterproof feathers
3.What does the underlined word “shivering” in the second paragraph mean?
A.Feeling scared. B.Staying relaxed.
C.Shaking with cold. D.Keeping warm.
4.What would be the best title for this passage?

Every year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii,Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for,its stadium and theatres, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii’s people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2,000 years.
Once,Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people,at the foot of Mount Vesuvius,a grass-covered volcano.Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for centuries,so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.
On August 24th,79 AD,Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air.Soon stones and hot ashes began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later,Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes.Almost all of its people were dead.
For centuries,Pompeii lay buried under stones and ashes. Then,in the year 1861,an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii.Slowly, carefully,Ginseppe and his men dug.The city looked almost the same as it had looked in 79 AD.There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20,000 seats.Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which told us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue color in the bottom,so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too;metal bread pans were in every bakery. In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread—a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today.Tiny boxes filled with dark, shiny powder told us that women liked to wear make-up.
Ginseppe has died, but his work continues.One-fourth has not been uncovered yet.Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii.
1.Why do a large number of people come to Pompeii each year?
A.To visit the volcano.
B.To shop and eat there.
C.To watch sports and plays.
D.To see how Pompeiians lived.
2.Why had so many Pompeiians remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius?
A.The city nearby offered all kinds of fun.
B.The area produced the finest wine in Italy.
C.Few people expected the volcano to erupt again.
D.The mountain was beautiful and covered with grass.
3.Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in 79 AD?
A.Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully.
B.Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.
C.Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects.
D.Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.
4.What do we know about the Pompeiians who lived 2,000 years ago?
A.They lived more or less the same as Italians now do.
B.They liked women wearing all kinds of make-up.
C.They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating.
D.They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in 79 AD.

I have to say I usually want to throw up when I hear someone say each of us has a purpose because I realize that as far as most people are concerned it is the cliché(陈词滥调).I do believe it is true that as humans we all feel that we must be here for a purpose, but I also know that most of us have no idea what that purpose is.
For most people the problem is that they don’t believe that they have a passion.I know you hear it all the time:“Find your passion.” The key step is hard to make if someone is so numb that he/she doesn’t know what his/her passion could possibly be.Somehow we seem to hang onto our failures and limits more than we do our success, which is just human nature.Stop and think about the things that you have always done well and loved to do,which will help you find your passion.
We should know it’s easy to determine our purpose, but your purpose must be combined with your passion. For example,I have been involved in weight lifting and fitness since I was in my twenties and have a great deal of self-taught knowledge about bodybuilding. All I had to do was take an exam from a certifying organization to gain my certification and be a fitness trainer which is my purpose.I had a purpose and passion so I made it at last.
Generally, your purpose must be in the area that you love, enjoy and are passionate about and that is why you have chosen to spend time and energy to realize it.Your success will always be greater when you are working in an area that you are passionate about.
1.The author believes that ________.
A.each of us has a purpose
B.few people have a purpose
C.most of us have a purpose
D.all of us need a purpose
2.Which of the following is the most important to you according to the author?
A.Finding your passion.
B.Hanging onto your success.
C.Giving up your failures.
D.Setting up your purpose.
3.Many people can’t get rid of their failures because ________.
A.they have become very numb
B.they don’t know what success is
C.it’s difficult to change their nature
D.many things limit their actions
4.You should choose your purpose in the area where ________.
A.you have expert knowledge, interest and passion
B.you have to work hard to make a living
C.you have interest and less special knowledge
D.you enjoy your work and have few skills

A lecturer was giving a lecture to his students on stress management. He raised a glass of water and asked the students,“How heavy do you think this glass of water is?”
All of the students tried to answer the question, and their answers ranged from 20g to 500g.
“It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it.If I hold it for a minute,it is OK.If I hold it for an hour,I will have an ache in my right arm.If I hold it for a day,you will have to call an ambulance. It is exactly the same weight, but the longer I hold it,the heavier it becomes.”
“If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later,we will not be able to carry on,because the burden is becoming increasingly heavier.”
“What you have to do is put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it again.”
“We have to put down the burden periodically,so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on.Otherwise I think that we will break down on the half way and can’t realize our dream as we planned. All of us should really keep this in mind.”
Before you return home from work tonight, put the burden of work down.Don’t carry it back home. You can pick it up tomorrow.
Whatever burden you are having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can.If you do like this, you can greatly improve your work efficiency (效率) and life quality.
Life is short;let’s enjoy it to the fullest.

Increasingly over the last few years,we have become familiar with the range of small electronic devices or “smart” accessories(附件).Pocket heart-rate monitors for joggers and electronic maps are just the first examples of many new products that promise to change our life in all sorts of surprising ways.
As a scientist at New York University,Rosalind Picard tries out different smart accessories before they go on the market. One of these was the so-called “frown (皱眉) headband”.Rosalind was shocked to realize just how often she frowned.Stuck in a traffic jam recently,Rosalind kept hearing the sounds of the tiny sensor inside the band worn around her forehead—each time she frowned in annoyance, the sensor gave out a signal.
Another computer scientist,Steven Feiner,is working on a pair of glasses that will do more than help you to see.Imagine you want to try a restaurant in a foreign city but you’re not familiar with the dishes on the menu.If you are wearing a pair of Steven’s glasses, all you have to do is glance above the restaurant’s doorway and your glasses will immediately become windows to the Internet, offering you full details of the meals served inside. The glasses could also be used to help people make speeches, give chefs access to the latest recipes and even provide doctors with patient information while they carry out operations.
At the moment,Steven’s invention looks more like a large ski mask than a pair of glasses. It’s a headset connected to a hand-held computer and a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver, which tracks the wearer’s position. But he says that these head-worn displays will eventually get smaller and lighter as technology improves.
And,of course, this new technology has a fashionable as well as useful application.A chemical engineer named Robert Langer has invented a new microchip that,if put inside a ring, can give off different smells according to a person’s mood. That,of course, may or may not appeal to you. And,in the end,it is shoppers, not scientists, who will determine which of these smart accessories will succeed as fashionable items and which are sure to join history’s long list of crazy inventions.
It is clear, however, that as computers get smaller and cheaper, they will pop up in all sorts of easily-wearable accessories, even in the buttons on your coat. What’s more, this is something that’s going to happen a lot sooner than we all expect.
1.For people eating out,Steven’s glasses can ________.
A.give them a restaurant’s location
B.let them see a restaurant’s environment
C.inform them about a restaurant’s menu
D.tell them about a restaurant’s quality
2.What is the current problem with Steven’s glasses?
A.Limited fun_ction.
B.Inconvenience.
C.High cost.
D.Poor Internet access.
3.In general, what does the writer think about smart accessories?
A.They will soon be widely available.
B.Much more research is needed into them.
C.Only a few of them will appeal to shoppers.
D.Most of them are considered to be crazy inventions.
4.What’s the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A.To advertise some smart accessories.
B.To tell interesting stories about smart accessories.
C.To argue that smart accessories are fashionable.
D.To introduce the idea of smart accessories.

Of course, the main difference on the Chinese dinner table is chopsticks instead of knife and fork, but that’s only superficial.Besides,in decent restaurants, you can always ask for a pair of knife and fork,if you find the chopsticks not helpful enough. The real difference is that in the West, you have your own plate of food, while in China the dishes are placed on the table and everyone shares. If you are being treated to a formal dinner and particularly if the host thinks you’re in the country for the first time,he will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes.
The meal usually begins with a set of at least four cold dishes,to be followed by the main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes.Soup then will be served (unless in Guangdong style restaurants) to be followed by staple food ranging from rice, noodles to dumplings. If you wish to have your rice to go with other dishes,you_should_say_so_in_good_time,for most of the Chinese choose to have the staple food at last or have none of them at all.
Perhaps one of the things that surprise a Western visitor most is that some of the Chinese hosts like to put food into the plates of their guests. In formal dinners, there are always “public” chopsticks and spoons for this purpose, but some hosts may use their own chopsticks. This is a sign of genuine friendship and politeness. It is always polite to eat the food.If you do not eat it,just leave the food in the plate.
People in China tend to over-order food, for they will find it embarrassing if all the food is consumed. When you have had enough, just say so.Or you will always overeat!
60.What’s the main difference on dinner table between China and the West?
A.You have your own plate of food in the West while in China everyone shares the dishes.
B.On Chinese dinner table, chopsticks replace knife and fork.
C.You’re treated to a formal dinner for the first time.
D.The host will do the best to give you a taste of many different types of dishes.

a.A set of four cold dishes.
b.Staple food such as rice, noodle or dumplings.
c.The main courses of hot meat and vegetable dishes.
d.Serving soup.
A.a,c,b,d B.c,a,b,d
C.a,c,d,b D.c,a,d,b
62.According to the passage,we can infer that ________.
A.Chinese think it impolite for guests to leave food in the plate
B.Chinese think it polite to put food into the plates of the guests with their own chopsticks
C.people in China tend to over-order food, for they will find it embarrassing if all the food is consumed
D.Chinese all think it impolite for guests to ask for a pair of knife and fork

Choosing which college or university to attend is a big decision, and should be based on many factors. The subject you wish to study, extracurricular (课外的) activities that interest you, fees and associated costs, and the location of the institution should be investigated before reaching your final conclusion. It can be easy to fall for stereotypes (刻板印象) or make decisions based on reputations when you are selecting a college or university, but you owe it to yourself to find out all that you can about your choice and make this tough decision by yourself.Your future happiness depends upon it!
Selecting the subject(s) you wish to study at college or university shouldn’t be too shocking, particularly after selecting your GCSE and A-level subjects.By this point in your academic career you should have some idea of the subjects you enjoy, and the subjects for which you have a talent.Look at which subjects fulfill both of these categories and you will be well on your way to deciding what to study at a higher level.
Contrary to what your parents might insist, every waking moment of your college or university days will not be taken up with studying.Make sure that you select a college or university that fits your interests by investigating their extracurricular activities.Make sure you can find at least one extracurricular activity that you are interested in at every college or university that remains on your list.
Unfortunately the days of paying for college or university based on a part-time job are long gone.Associated costs such as paying for food and rent, books and clothes, social events and travel, and the cost of going to a college or university soon adds up.Make sure you look into all of the costs you will be expected to pay before deciding on any particular college or university.
Choosing a college or university will probably be one of the most important decisions of your life.Your future friendships, career prospects and even romantic relationships will depend,at least in part,on which higher level educational institution you attend, and all of these will play a large part in your future happiness. However, don’t let this tough decision put you off because more likely than not wherever you end up will indeed be the right place for you.
64.What should you consider when you choose your future college or university?
A.The history and tradition.
B.The subject and extracurricular activities.
C.Fees and associated costs, the location of the institution.
D.Both B and C.
65.It can be inferred from the second paragraph that ________.
A.both GCSE and A-level subjects are not enjoyed by students
B.everybody needs to select GCSE and A-level subjects and other subjects
C.you can’t be good at both A-level subjects and other subjects
D.you can choose other subjects besides GCSE and A-level subjects
66.Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A.Choosing a college or university should be based on many factors.
B.It is suggested that you select a college or university which interests you.
C.Students can still afford their tuition by doing a part-time job nowadays.
D.Your future friendships will have influence on your future happiness.
67.What is the purpose of the last sentence in the last paragraph?
A.To encourage people to choose a college or university decidedly.
B.To ask people to think twice before choosing a college or university decidedly.
C.To encourage people to choose a college or university directly.
D.To ask people to ignore the advice.
D
Bringing up children is hard work, and you are often to blame for any bad behavior of your children. If so,Judith Rich Harris has good news for you.Parents, she argues, have no important long-term effects on the development of the personality of their children.Far more important are their playground friends and neighborhood.Ms.Harris takes to hitting the assumption, which has dominated(支配)develop-mental psychology for almost half a century.
Ms.Harris’s attack on the developmentalists “nature” argument looks likely to reinforce(加强)doubts that the profession was already having. If parents matter, why is it that two adopted children, brought up in the same home, are no more similar in personality than two adopted children brought up in separate homes?Or that a pair of identical twins, brought up in the same home, are no more alike than a pair of identical twins brought up in different homes?
Difficult as it is to track the precise effects of parental upbringing,it may be harder to measure the exact influence of the peer(同龄人)group in childhood and adolescence.Ms.Harris points to how children from immigrant homes soon learn not to speak at school in the way their parents speak. But acquiring a language is surely a skill, rather than a characteristic of the sort developmental psychologists hunt for.Certainly it is different from growing up tense or relaxed,or from learning to be honest or hard-working or generous.Easy though it may be difficult to prove that parents have little influence on those qualities,it will be hard to prove that peers have vastly more.
Moreover, mum and dad surely cannot be ditched completely.Young adults may,as Ms.Harris argues,be keen to appear like their peers. But even in those early years, parents have the power to open doors:they may initially choose the peers with whom their young associate, and pick that influential neighborhood. Moreover, most people suspect that they come to resemble their parents more in middle age,and that people’s child bearing habits may be formed partly by what their parents did.So the balance of influences is probably complicated,as most parents already suspected without being able to demonstrate it scientifically.Even if it turns out that the genes they pass on and the friends their children play with matter as much as affection, disciplines and good examples, parents are not completely off the hook.

Psychologists tell us that there are four basic stages that human beings pass through when they enter and live in a new culture. This process, which helps us to deal with culture shock,is the way our brain and our personality reacts to the strange new things we meet with when we move from one culture to another.
Culture shock begins with the “honeymoon stage”. This is the period of time when we first arrive in which everything about the new culture is strange and exciting. We may be suffering from “jet lag” but we are thrilled to be in the new environment. You see new sights, hear new sounds and language and eat new kinds of food. This honeymoon stage can last for quite a long time because we feel we are involved in some kind of great adventure.
Unfortunately, the second stage of culture shock can be more difficult. After we have settled down into our new life,we can become very tired and begin to miss our homeland and our family. This period of cultural adjustment can be very difficult and lead to the new arrival rejecting or pulling away from the new culture. This “rejection stage” can be quite dangerous because the visitor may develop unhealthy habits. This stage is considered a crisis in the process of cultural adjustment and many people choose to go back to their homeland or spend all their time with people from their own culture speaking their native language. Almost all the little problems that everybody has in daily life seem to be much bigger and more disturbing when faced with a foreign culture.
The third stage of culture shock is called the “adjustment stage”. This is when you begin to realize that things are not so bad in the host culture. Your sense of humour usually becomes stronger and you realize that you are becoming stronger by learning to take care of yourself in the new place. Things are still difficult, but you are now a survivor!
The fourth stage can be called “adaptation”. Now you feel quite comfortable in your new surroundings. You can cope with most problems that occur. You may still have problems with the language, but you know you are strong enough to deal with them. If you meet someone from your country who has just arrived, you can be the expert on life in the new culture and help them to deal with their culture shock.
There is a fifth stage of culture shock which many people don’t know about. This is called “reverse culture shock”. Surprisingly, this occurs when you go back to your native culture and find that you have changed and that things there have changed while you have been away. Now you feel a little uncomfortable back home. Life is a struggle!Title:Culture shock

Empty nesters refer to the old parents whose children have grown up and moved out. They have spent most of their lives taking care of their children and teaching them how to be independent.
However, once their children leave home, the parents will feel lonely in the empty houses. What’s worse, they can’t be taken care of if they fall ill.In my opinion, although grown-up children are busy with their work and have their own families to attend to,they should spare some time to visit their parents now and then. Also the government should show concern for empty nesters.
As for the empty nesters themselves, they can get more involved in social affairs,so that they’ll feel less lonely.
