San Francisco is going to do what many other cities have already done—provide free bicycles to the public. The mayor of San Francisco supports the bicycle program. He wants to improve the terrible traffic problems in the city.
At first,40 to 60 bikes will be available only to city workers.People will give their old bikes to the city to use in the program. If this program is successful, one day more than 1,000 bicycles will be available.Everyone, not just city workers, will be able to use these bicycles.
People in Fresno,California have already have a free bicycle program. In fact, this idea began in Amsterdam over 40 years ago. These programs encourage citizens to get out of their cars and onto pollution-free bikes.
Fresno’s Yellow Bike Program puts about forty bicycles around the city. The bikes are painted bright yellow so people know they can take them. When people take a yellow bike, they can ride to work or to shopping areas, and then leave the bike for the next rider.
Some people worry that the free bikes will be stolen. However, theft hasn’t been a problem in free-bike cities by now.
While most people think the bike program is a good idea, only a few say they will use it.“I will still drive my car,”says Joanna Greene.“San Francisco has a lot of hills. My office is at the top of Potrero Hill.I don’t think I’m in good shape. And,wouldn’t I have to carry a helmet with me all the time?”
Phil Chung agrees,“There is too much traffic.Riding a bicycle can be dangerous. There are not very many bike lanes.” He continues,“Plus,it’s too cold in the winter. And what if you ride a bike to work, and then there isn’t one to ride home?”
Program leaders know there will be problems. But they think it’s worth trying.“It’s not the solution for everyone,”states Sylvia Pass.“But if just one hundred people use it every day, that’s one hundred cars that aren’t on the streets, one hundred parking spaces that aren’t used.I think it’s a great beginning.”
1.San Francisco provides bicycles to the public because________.
A.there are many bikes available
B.many people don’t have cars of their own

A.free bikes will be stolen
B.San Francisco is not flat at all

A.I’m beautiful.

A.there will be more problems
B.they can solve some problems
C.there will be fewer cars on the streets anyway

The transportation authority is pressing ahead with a three-year plan to repair the majority of the country’s “unsafe” bridges.
According to official statistics from last year,of the 500,000 bridges nationwide, some 6,200 were classified as unsafe. If left unrepaired, these bridges may collapse at any time.
The plan says that on its completion in 2010,all bridges over trunk roads at or above provincial level will be 100 percent sound, while those linking counties and townships will also be made safe.It is expected the ambitious plan will help improve the safety and efficiency of our transit system, contributing to economic growth and a better life.
Although bridge collapses are rare regrettably they do happen. The images are still fresh of the deadly collapse on June 15 in South China’s Guangdong Province.
A cargo vessel ploughed into a section of the 1,600-meter-long Jiujiang Bridge in heavy fog, causing part of it to collapse.Four vehicles carrying seven people and two road workers fell into the Xijiang River below. The accident caused nine deaths and once again aroused public concern over bridge and waterway safety. An examination of the bridge later said the collapse was caused by the collision and experts shrugged off accusations (指责)the bridge had structural defects.
With rising traffic levels giving a growing burden on bridges and roads, measures such as stricter weight restrictions should be carried out to reduce the potential danger of over laden and overweight vehicles.
Safety measures should be fully taken into account when building new bridges, with attention being paid to adding more supports to reduce the risk of collapse.
Last but not least,we should divert our zeal (热情)for constructing new bridges to maintaining and strengthening the aging ones,as a great proportion of them are in a poor condition.
Regular and careful inspections as well as quick repair work should be put high on the agendas(议程)of transportation authorities nationwide.
1.Of all the bridges,________ are considered to have potential safety problems.
A.20% B.10%
C.8% D.1.2%
2.With the three-year plan completed,________.
A.all bridges will be 100 percent sound
B.the safety and efficiency of our transit system will be greatly improved
C.the bridge collapse won’t happen again
D.stricter weight restrictions may not be so urgent
3.About the bridge collapse in South China’s Guangdong Province, which of the following statements is wrong?
A.The cause of the collapse has been made clear.
B.The bridge had no structural defects.
C.While the accident happened,the weather wasn’t fine.
D.The bridge is an aging one and in poor condition.
4.What can we infer from the passage?
A.It was once doubted that the bridge had structural defects.
B.The construction company will be accused of poor quality.
C.The officials must resign for the tragedy.
D.Before the accident,no one was concerned about bridge and waterway safety.

As the pace of life continues to increase,we are fast losing the art of relaxation.Once you are in the habit of rushing through life, being on the go from morning till night,it is hard to slow down. But relaxation is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it.In fact,it is not the bad thing it is often supposed to be.A certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and give purpose to life.It is only when the stress gets out of control that it can lead to poor performance and ill health.
The amount of stress a person can withstand depends very much on the individual. Some people are not afraid of stress, and such characters are obviously prime material for managerial responsibilities, others lose heart at the first sign of unusual difficulties. When exposed to stress,in whatever form,we react both chemically and physically. In fact we make choice between “flight or fight” and in more primitive days the choices made the difference between life or death. The crises we meet today are unlikely to be so extreme, but however little the stress,it involves the same response. It is when such a reaction lasts long, through continued exposure to stress, that health becomes endangered.Since we can’t remove stress from our lives (it would be unwise to do_so even if we could),we need to find ways to deal with it.
1.People are finding less and less time for relaxing themselves because ________.
A.they regard working as their greatest enjoyment

C.they are traveling fast all the time
D.they are becoming busier with their work than ever before

A.We can find quite a few ways to avoid stress.
B.Stress is always harmful to people’s health.
C.It’s easy to change the habit of keeping oneself busy with work.

4.In the last sentence of the passage, the underlined words “do so” refer to “________”.
A.expose ourselves to stress
B.find ways to deal with stress

A debate is a discussion about a subject on which people have different views. It’s a nice way of gaining a lot of knowledge and views on a topic,or situation that we aren’t either aware of,or haven’t really looked into in detail. It makes you more able to think critically and more confident in speaking. In addition,it helps in appreciating tolerance of others’ opinions and improves your listening skills.
A debate requires one to know how to use words and intelligence to overcome his or her opposing team members. To give great arguments during a debate, first you need to get your facts right. To make what you have in materials for a debate contain facts, don’t just depend on the Internet, especially avoid just referring to one website for all your information. You are also required to refer to books, and make sure they’re authors of a high degree, since their materials have reference notes and extensive research projects done on what they are covering.
Second, you should be full of confidence. You need to show that you’re sure of what you’re saying, and point out how flawed their comeback arguments were. The only way to do this is to thoroughly know your materials before heading on out to a debate session.Know your statistics, know your history and above all know names, dates and places.Make key notes to refer to.Don’t stammer (口吃),and also don’t level your gaze with your opponent or the rest of them. All this will help you keep confident.
At last,by no means should you lose your calmness, but keep your voice firm and raised enough to sound calm.A good team member should know how to keep his emotions in control as well as keep others under control in his team.

Whenever we meet with difficulty or failure, teachers, parents or others often say to us or perhaps we say to ourselves,“Never give up.” These can be encouraging words and words of determination.A person who believes in himself will keep trying to reach his goal no matter how many times he fails. In my opinion, the quality of determination to succeed is an important one to have. Therefore,I believe that we should never give up.
One reason is that if we give up too easily,we will rarely achieve anything. It is not unusual for us to fail at our first attempt at something new,so we should not feel disappointed and should try again.Besides,if we always give up when we fail,we will not be able to develop new skills or grow.
Another reason why we should never give up is that we can learn from our mistakes so that we will not make the same ones.If we do not try again, the lesson we have learned is wasted.
Finally,we should never give up because as we work to reach our goals,we develop confidence, and this confidence can help us succeed in other areas of our lives. If we never challenge ourselves,we will begin to doubt our abilities.
In short,it is important that we do not give up when working for our goals.Whether we succeed in the end or not,we will learn something, and what we learned will help us to become better and more confident.Furthermore,if we give up,we have no chance of attaining our goals, but if we keep making great efforts, there is always a chance that we will succeed one day.

This year, about 2,300 teenagers from all over the world will spend about 10 months in US homes. At the same time about 1,300 American teenagers will go to other countries to learn new languages and learn the rest of the world.
Here is a 2-way student exchange in action.Fred,19,spent last year in Germany with George’s family. In turn,George’s son Mike spent a year in Fred’s home in America.
Fred,a lively young man, knew little German when he arrived. But after 2 months of studying, the language became easy for him.School was completely different from what he had expected and it was much harder.Students rose respectfully when the teacher entered the room. They took 14 subjects instead of 6 that were usually taken in the US.
Family life, too, was different. The father’s word was the law.All the activities were done with the family rather than individually.Fred found the food to be too simple at first. He also missed having a car.
“Back home, you pick up some friends in a car and go out to have a good time.In Germany, you walk but you soon learn to like it.”
At the same time,in America,Mike,a friendly German boy,was also forming his own ideas.“I suppose I should criticize American schools,” he says.“It is far too easy for our level but I have to say that I like it a lot.In Germany,we do nothing but study. Here we take part in many other activities.I think that maybe American schools are better in training their citizens. There ought to be some middle ground between the two.”

There are two basic ways to see growth:one as a product, the other as a process.People have generally regarded personal growth as an external result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language—all these are examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast, the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have, and their caution or courage,as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try,new challenges to accept.
In order to grow,to travel new worlds, people need to have a willingness to take risks,to face the unknown, and to accept the responsibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is a necessity for our ability to grow.Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so,we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences.Do we think we are shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate,to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt change or that we are not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow.If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.

It is quite reasonable to blame traffic jams, the cost of gas and the great speed of modern life, but manners on the road are becoming horrible.Everybody knows that the nicest men would become fierce tigers behind the wheel. It is all right to have a tiger in a cage, but to have one in the driver’s seat is another matter altogether.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too.It takes the most cool-headed drivers great patience to give up the desire to beat back when forced to face rude driving. On the other hand,a little politeness goes a long way towards reducing the possibility of quarrelling and fighting.A friendly nod or a wave of thanks in answer to an act of politeness helps to create an atmosphere of good will and calm so necessary in modern traffic conditions. But such behaviours of politeness are by no means enough. Many drivers nowadays don’t even seem able to recognize politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.Typical example is the driver who waves a child crossing the street at a wrong place into the path of oncoming cars that may be not able to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they want to.It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodies of these grannies.
An experienced driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if drivers learnt to correctly join in traffic stream without causing total blockages that give rise to unpleasant feelings.Unfortunately, modern drivers can’t even learn to drive, let alone master the road manship.Years ago, experts warned us that the fast increase of the car ownership would demand more give-and-take from all road users. It is high time for all of us to take this message to heart.
56.According to the passage, troubles on the road are often caused by ________.
A.road conditions
B.the speed of modern life
C.the behaviour of the drivers
D.the large number of cars
57.The underlined word “give-and-take” in the 4th paragraph probably means “________”.
A.politeness and impoliteness
B.good manners and bad manners
C.offering help to others as much as possible
D.willingness of each person to give in to each other’s wishes
58.According to the writer,a good driver should ______.
A.beat back when forced to face rude driving
B.be able to recognize politeness when he sees it
C.encourage old ladies to cross the road whenever they want to
D.join in traffic stream quickly however other people feel
59.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Road Politeness
B.Traffic Problems
C.Bad Manners on the Road
D.Good Drivers and Bad Drivers

Kieron Williamson,a seven-year-old boy,is being considered as an art genius after selling 16 paintings for 18,000 pounds in just 14 minutes. This boy has artistic skills that would be the envy of any serious painter and his paintings invited comparisons with those of Pablo Picasso’s,a wonder child who became one of the greatest artists of the 20th century.
It all began on a family holiday to Cornwall when Kieron was five.Inspired by the seaside view,he asked his parents for his first drawing paper. From that moment on,he was deeply interested in drawing. While supportive,Kieron’s parents are careful not to push their son.He only paints when and what he wants.
He has a waiting list of hundreds and requests for his work are increasing. His father said the sale of Kieron’s works held last November even attracted a buyer from Japan.“We had people driving down that night. There were people on the door waiting to come in the morning that had been standing outside. The phones were going mad as soon as the door opened at nine o’clock and within 14 minutes all the 16 pictures had gone,” he said.
All the talent, money and high praise could so easily go to a young boy’s head, but Kieron said his friends didn’t give his achievement much care.“Some of them want to be as good as me and most of them think...Umm,‘you are not too special,’”he said.
Kieron’s favourite painter is British artist Edward Seago and he has spent some of his earnings on buying a work of his.The rest is being invested by his parents until he reaches 25.Kieron’s parents and his younger sister Billi-Jo don’t see him as anything other than a normal seven-year-old who likes to run around the house and who’s mad about football. But for now, with so much still to learn, there’s only one thing he wants to be when he grows up.

I used to know nothing about fairy tales. To improve my reading skills,my mother gave me books that are a little bit difficult for me to understand.I didn’t even know that fairy tales existed until I attended public school at the age of eight.Of course once I found out about books of this type,I would read them as quickly as I could.
Again and again,I begged my mother to take me to the library and let me choose a few. Finally,my request was granted. After our return from the library,I started reading them eagerly and energetically, one after another. And I tried to put myself in the female character’s shoes.I found she had to suffer before the handsome prince came to her rescue, and then they would live happily ever after.
I asked my mother why she never let me know about fairy tales.Looking straight in my eyes, she told me that life is not like a fairy tale. There are good and bad things that will happen through life.At the end, though, there is not a man that will come and “save” us.We do not need saving;we instead want someone in our lives to share those good moments and bad ones;we want someone we can rely on and also they can rely on us.Life is not about “happily ever after”.
What then is life about mom?Life is the boy finding he loves every little thing about you, even the annoying things. He holds your hands and says “come with me” and you live, laugh and love together. But things are not going to be perfect. You still have to face difficulties together, working hard for your relationship.
64.Before the age of eight,the author ________.
A.received no formal education
B.took no interest in reading books

D.was forced to improve her reading skills
65.What happened to the author after she attended public school?

B.She was crazy about fairy tales.
C.Her mother always took her to the library.
D.Her mother didn’t allow her to read books of fairy tales.
66.What’s the author’s understanding of fairy tales at first?
A.They reflect part of the real world.
B.They are unreal but worth reading.
C.The major characters always have a happy ending.
D.The major characters will be rewarded for their kindness.
67.How does the author’s mother like fairy tales?
A.A must for her kid.
B.Unnecessary for her kid.
C.Easy for her kid to understand.
D.Helpful in building her kid’s character.

It is reported that Japan’s Nissan Motor Company has officially announced the next big thing—a paint that not only resists scratches, but actually repairs itself within a few days.
The new material, developed by Nippon Paint Company, contains a special chemical like rubber that is able to heal small marks caused by car wash equipment, parking lot encounters, broken stones or even on-purpose destruction.
The automaker admits its results vary depending on the temperature and the depth of the damage, but he also says that this is the only paint like it in the world, and tests prove it works.
Small scratches, the most common type, are said to slowly fade over about a week. And once they’re gone, there is no mark left where they ever were.
The special paint is said to last for at least three years after it is first applied, but there is no word yet on whether more can be added after that period.

New tombs found in Giza support the view that the Great Pyramids were built by free workers and not slaves,as widely believed,Egypt’s chief archaeologist (考古学家) said on Sunday.
Films and media have long described slaves toiling away in the desert to build the extremely large pyramids only to meet a miserable death at the end of their efforts.
“These tombs were built beside the king’s pyramid, which indicates that these people were not by any means slaves,” Zahi Hawass, the chief archaeologist heading the Egyptian excavation(挖掘) team, said in a statement.
“If they had been slaves, they would not have been able to build their tombs beside their king’s.”
He said the collection of workers’ tombs, some of which were found in the 1990s,was among the most significant finds in the 20th and 21st centuries. They belonged to workers who built the pyramids of Khufu and Khafre.
Hawass had earlier found drawings on the walls from workers calling themselves “friends of Khufu”—another sign that they were not slaves.
The tombs,on the Giza plateau on the western edge of Cairo, are 4510 years old and lie at the entrance of a one-km (half mile)-long necropolis(古代大墓地).
Hawass said evidence had been found showing that farmers in the Delta and Upper Egypt had sent 21 buffalo and 23 sheep to the plateau every day to feed the builders, believed to number around 10,000—or about a tenth of Greek historian Herodotus’s estimate of 100,000.
These farmers were exempted(豁免) from paying taxes to the government of ancient Egypt—evidence that he said showed the fact they were participating in a national project.
The first discovery of workers’ tombs in 1990 came about accidentally when a horse stumbled(绊倒) on a brick structure 10 meters away from the burial area.
72.The workers’ tombs were first discovered ________.
A.by farmers working in the fields
B.with the help of modern technology
C.as a result of a stumbled horse by chance
D.by archaeologists as planned
73.The most important fact that the Great Pyramids were not built by slaves is that ________.
A.slaves couldn’t toil away in the desert
B.the builders of the Great Pyramids were buried beside the king’s pyramid
C.the collection of workers’ tombs, some of which were found in the 1990s
D.farmers in the Delta and Upper Egypt had sent 21 buffalo and 23 sheep to the plateau every day
74.Who have long been regarded as the builders of the Great Pyramids?
A.Free workers. B.Farmers.
C.Slaves. D.Prisoners.
75.One of the most significant discoveries in the 20th and 21st centuries was ________.
A.the king’s pyramid
B.drawings on the walls
C.the entrance of a one-km(half mile)-long necropolis
D.the collection of workers’ tombs

In the field of farming, grape cultivation(耕作) is taken up as one of the popular businesses by thousands of people. The goodness and nutritional value offered by this fruit is such that it can actually cure lots of health issues. However,if the grape is not planted as required, all your efforts will be wasted. Therefore,it’s so essential to know the actual procedure of planting grapes of any variety in right ways.
For a successful grape cultivation,it is so important for you to purchase good quality seeds from any online market or even from the nearby good quality nursery(苗圃).According to your personal choice, you can purchase seeds of red, white, green or black grapes that you like. You need to let the seeds dry out for a week’s time.
Planting the newly-purchased and dried seeds directly in the wide open soil can be pretty harmful. You need to plant them in the smaller pots and let them grow up to certain size.A good quality soil will let the seeds grow faster and better. The pots are to be placed in plastic bags and then refrigerated for at least 3 months at warmth of less than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. There is no use if the seeds freeze completely. Then begin your replanting procedure in which you need to remove the seeds from the fridge and allow them to warm a bit.If seeds are kept in direct sunlight, they will die.
Just after the seeds are ready for planting, you need to search around for a perfect location to plant them permanently.A properly-lit location with required slope(坡度),irrigation as well as drainage(排水) facilities will help a lot.
Lastly you need to consider about other factors like climate, space available, time, temperature and use of fertilizers(肥料) as well as pesticides that will assist in better growth of grapes.Investing in a good number of fertilizers and pesticides is always worth for protection.
As you learn all details of growing the grape crops at your backyards, you need to learn the tricks to maintain them.Dedicated efforts, time, patience and personal attention will help a lot in cultivating the crops at its best.

It was 2∶05 in the afternoon. When I entered the classroom,I was surprised to see a video camera. Our class teacher was operating the camera, and my classmates were all talking among themselves slowly. Most of us had never been in front of a video camera before,so we were quite nervous. As for of myself,I had once faced one at home;my uncle was shooting when we were celebrating my sister’s birthday. But this was completely different. We had to talk about our articles as if we were reading news on TV.The funny thing was that every time I tried to face the camera and talk about my article,I forgot the article and couldn’t resist looking down at it.It was a completely different experience for me,thanks to our class teacher.

Just_now,I_entered_the_website—“Topic_for_Today”.I_feel_interested_in_the_report_on_banning_the_use_of_cellphones_on_campus_in_middle_school.In fact, more students now come to school with cellphones. My schoolmates have different opinions.
Some think it is convenient to get in touch with others with the cellphone, which also makes you feel safe especially in time of trouble.Besides,it is nice to enjoy various functions of different cellphones.
Others think differently.First, the cellphone is not a must in school,as there are some IC phones there, making it easy to call others.Second, many often play e-games and send e-messages with their cellphones, even in class, which will surely have bad effects on their study.Worse is to come,it will result in a great waste of time and money.
In my opinion, the cellphone is a useful tool in our daily life. But it doesn’t mean we can use it freely in school.

For years and years people have been saying that the railways are dead.“We can do without railways,” people say—as if motorcars and planes have made the railways unnecessary. We all keep hearing that trains are slow, that they lose money, that they’re dying. But this is far from the truth. In these days of expensive oil,the railways have become highly competitive with motorcars and planes. If you want to carry people or goods from place to place, they’re cheaper than planes. And they have much in common with planes.A plane goes in a straight line and so does a railway. What is more,it takes you from the heart of a city into the heart of another. It doesn’t leave you as a plane does, miles and miles from the city center. It doesn’t hold you up as a car does in an endless traffic jam.And a single train can carry goods which no plane or motorcar could ever do.
Far from being dead, the railways are very much alive.Modern railway lines give you a smooth, untroubled journey.Where else can you eat well, sleep in comfort, feel safe and enjoy the scene while you are traveling at speed at the same time? And we are only at the beginning. For we have just entered the age of super-fast trains, trains traveling at 150 miles an hour and more.Soon we will be wondering why we spent so much on motorways we can’t use because we have not enough money to buy the oil and planes we can’t fly for the same reason.
1.Why railways are highly competitive in these days?
A.Oil is expensive today.
B.They are faster than before.
C.They are safer.
D.They are more comfortable.
2.Which of the following would be supported by the writer?
A.People can do without railways.
B.Motorcars are better than planes.
C.Motorcars are the cheapest transport.
D.Trains are good and far from being dead.
3.It can be inferred from the passage that the writer thinks________.
A.motorcars will become the cheapest way of getting around
B.planes will disappear for the high oil prices
C.railways will replace planes and motorcars
D.the oil prices will be going up
4.The author thinks in the future the motorcars________.
A.will become smaller and smaller
B.will cause more pollution
C.will cost people a lot
D.will be much safer

People used to think that wetlands were wasted land.Developers would drain them with ditches, fill them in with tons of soil, and build houses, schools, and parking areas on them. Then scientists began to realize the important role wetlands played in the environment.
Wetlands act like giant sponges during storms. They soak up extra storm water and afterward release it slowly back into the water cycle. This helps prevent flooding.Towns where people have drained wetlands have found that in a big storm, their streets and homes are often flooded because there are no wetlands to soak up the excess water.
Wetlands also act as giant filters where pollutants are absorbed and dissolved over time.Though wetlands can become polluted from dumping, wastewater, and fertilizer run-off from farm fields, they are able to process some pollutants over time because of all the microorganisms and plants living there.
Wetlands are especially important for providing homes and breeding grounds to millions of birds, fish, and amphibians worldwide. Many wetlands have become national wildlife refuges, where you can go to take pictures and look at birds and animals.
The Everglades are a huge wetland that once covered more than four million acres of southern Florida.Sometimes called the “river of grass”,the Everglades are a shallow sheet of water that slowly flowed across a grassy plain. In the late 1800s people began draining parts of the Everglades for development.Roads were built and towns sprang up.The Everglades shrank to half its original size.Cities like Miami grew up where once there was a thriving wetland.Sewage and waste from the cities were pumped into the remaining wetlands.Over time scientists began to see the importance of the Everglades.Even with its smaller size, the Everglades filtered the pollutants coming from the cities, absorbing the worst of it like a sewage treatment plant.During storms the Everglades protected the cities from storm surge flooding. They also are just a great place to visit and see wildlife.

You know how wonderful you are,and you know that others know how wonderful you are,but what do you do when admiration crosses over the line into jealousy? For most teens there will come a day when you realize that one of your friends is jealous and that this jealousy is hurting your friendship. When this happens it can seem like there is nothing that you can do,but the good news is that there is.Don’t let jealousy spoil your relationships.Tackle it head on and you might be back to normal much sooner than you think.
It can be hard to walk up to a friend and ask them what the problem is,but if you want to save your friendship, you’ll have to do just that.Don’t approach them and ask why they are jealous of you (unless of course you want to appear totally conceited),just take some time alone with them and let them know that you’ve been feeling like there’s been something coming between you.If they refuse to respond, then use the opportunity to explain how you have been feeling.Chances are that something you say will strike a nerve and your friend will open up as well.
When you figure out what is annoying your friend, asking him or her what (s)he thinks would make the situation better. If,for example,(s)he says that (s)he feels like (s)he doesn’t get to spend any time with you because of your being off with your new friends from the swim team then maybe you could invite him or her along the next time or block off one day a week for just the two of you.Remember, though, that whatever solution you decide on should be a compromise.Don’t limit your own talents or opportunities simply because your friend is unhappy.Try instead to include him or her in your new life and see how that works out.
Even the best of friendships can be tingled by jealousy. This destructive emotion is rarely productive and can turn best friends into worst enemies. Before taking extreme action, chat with your jealous friend to see if the two of you can work out a compromise. If you can’t,be prepared to know exactly how far you will go to keep your friend and how far you won’t.
60.According to the author, the jealousy emotion is ________.
A.normal B.productive
C.destructive D.extreme
61.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to face your friend when jealousy happens?

B.Walking up to him/her and asking him/her what the problem is.
C.Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know how you feel.
D.Spending some time with him/her and letting him/her know you think there’s something wrong between you.
62.The underlined word “it” in the first paragraph refers to “________”.
A.friendship B.relationship
C.admiration D.jealousy
63.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.There’s always a solution to the problem of jealousy.
B.Jealousy can turn best friends into worst enemies.
C.You may lose a friend to keep your own gifts, chances or self development.
D.You should go a long way with your friend to work out a solution.

Many Canadian students take part in science projects to learn about the world around them.Marshall Zhang,16,in grade 11 in Richmond Hill,Ontario, earned first place in a national science competition this year.He discovered something amazing while doing research on a disease called cystic fibrosis(囊性纤维化).
Marshall used a supercomputer network called SciNeT.He had never used the network before, but quickly learned how to use it because he was already good at using computers.
“Marshall applied his interest and skills in computer graphics(电脑绘图),which he developed while in Grade 5 and 6,to solve problems presented by cystic fibrosis,”said Tony Legault, the Toronto co-ordinator(协调者) for the Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge science competition.
He discovered on this computer program that two specific drugs were very effective in fixing the gene that causes cystic fibrosis.
Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease that causes thick, sticky mucus(黏液) to build in the lungs and parts of the digestive(消化的) system, causing difficult breathing.
He had only one chance to test his theory on real cells in a lab,and it turned out that his computer research was right.
Marshall had e-mailed some chemistry professors looking to help out at a lab,but didn’t get a great response. He said it was hard finding a lab that would let him do research since he was still in high school and did not have any experience.
Dr.Christine Bear gave him a chance to work in her lab and she became Marshall’s mentor(导师).Dr.Bear is a doctor at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children doing research on cystic fibrosis. She explained that using a computer and its lightning-speed processing can lead to discovering new types of drugs to help patients.
She said that Marshall could become a scientist in the future because he is very smart and has a lot of determination. She has invited Marshall to come back to her lab during the summer to do more research on cystic fibrosis.
64.Why did Marshall get first place in the national science competition?
A.He developed a new theory about network.
B.He knew how to do research on the Internet.
C.He started a computer network on his own.
D.He discovered two effective drugs for cystic fibrosis using computers.
65.Marshall learned how to use SciNeT quickly because________.
A.his teacher offered him some help
B.he was skilled at computers
C.he had textbooks to refer to
D.he was a good computer programmer
66.From what Tony Legault said,we know that Marshall Zhang________.
A.developed his computer skills in primary school
B.found it difficult to seek a cure for cystic fibrosis
C.felt it easy to solve problems by computer graphics
D.showed an interest in medical science at a young age
67.Why didn’t many chemistry professors have Marshall Zhang work in their labs?

“Success begins with belief and ends with doubt.”—Larina Kase
I remember reading through a book and the author was writing about being a reverse paranoid. In that particular section he mentions how he has a belief that the world he’s living in,is out to give him everything he absolutely wants and desires.
There are times when I think to myself,“Wow,the world is out to get me and make me miserable.”Then I thought, why can’t I believe that the world is out to make me a better conversationalist. Then I started adapting to the belief of the reverse paranoia.
When I started talking to people,I truly believed that I was the most interesting person in the room.I believed that everything I said added value to the conversation.I believed that people stayed behind and chatted with me because they found me charismatic.
As a matter of fact, for about five months I wrote down on my bathroom mirror the following affirmation:“People love me and respect me.It is a privilege to talk to me.People find me interesting and charming and always want to get to know me better!”
I would say the affirmation after I brushed my teeth. And I would continue to say it until I felt completely great about myself. There were days that I just wouldn’t feel like saying it,because it would feel like a lie to me.But that’s the trouble, like the quote says, success ends when there’s doubt. And that’s why I continued until I had no doubt in my mind.
Then strange things happened,I noticed that people did find me more interesting, and that I gained more confidence in talking with people.I was more assertive(坚定自信的) at work.I was able to control politics and gossip at work to minimal levels, and became a much better manager, and developed better customer relations to the point that sales were up by 20% compared to the year before,on my best month sales were up by 39%,and this was a year that a recession was happening.
68.The main purpose of the author is to________.
A.explain how to be a reverse paranoid
B.share his personal experience in success
C.tell us the importance of positive thinking
D.advise us how to improve our communication skills
69.Before the author started adapting to the belief of the reverse paranoia,he used to ________.
A.believe the world would give him anything he desired
B.have a negative attitude towards life
C.have a strong belief in the world
D.live a miserable life
70.Sometimes the author didn’t feel like saying his affirmation because________.
A.it didn’t work as he had expected
B.he had become enthusiastic about conversations
C.he had felt great about himself
D.it didn’t sound true to himself
71.We can infer from the last paragraph that the author________.
A.didn’t believe what had happened at work
B.didn’t get along with others at work
C.had his performance at work affected by the recession
D.made great progress due to his affirmation

If we were asked exactly what we were doing a year ago,we should probably have to say that we could not remember. But if we had kept a book and had written in it an account of what we did each day,we should be able to give an answer to the question.
It is the same in history. Many things have been forgotten because we do not have any written account of them.Sometimes men did keep a record of the most important happenings in their country, but often it was destroyed by a fire or in a war.Sometimes there was never any written record at all because the people of that time and place did not know how to write. For example,we know a good deal about the people who lived in China 4,000 years ago, because they could write and leave written records for those who lived after them. But we know almost nothing about the people who lived even 200 years ago in central Africa, because they had not learned to write.
Sometimes,of course, even if the people cannot write, they may know something of the past. They have heard about it from older people, and often songs and dances and stories have been made about the most important happenings, and these have been sung and acted and told for many generations. For most people are proud to tell what their fathers did in the past. This we may call ‘remembered history’.Some of it has now been written down.It is not so exact or so valuable to us as written history is,because words are much more easily changed when used again and again in speech than when copied in writing. But where there are no written records, such spoken stories are often very helpful.
72.Which of the following ideas is NOT suggested in the passage?
A.Where there are no written records, there is no history.
B.“Remembered history”,compared with written history,is less reliable.
C.A written account of our daily activities helps us to be able to answer many questions.
D.Written records of the past play the most important role in our learning of the human history.
73.We know very little about the central Africa 200 years ago because________.
A.the people there did not know how to write
B.the written records were perhaps destroyed by a fire
C.there was nothing worth writing down at that time
D.the people there ignored the importance of keeping a record
74.“Remembered history” is regarded as valuable only when________.
A.it is written down
B.no written account is available
C.it proves to be time
D.people are interested in it
75.The passage suggests that we could have learned much more about our past than we do now if the ancient people had________.
A.made more songs and dances
B.not burnt their written records in wars
C.kept a written record of every past event
D.told exact stories of the most important happenings

Aristotle once wrote that “happiness is a state of activity”.In other words, whether you’re seeking life-long satisfaction or a few moments of good cheer, you’ve got to move forward. We’ve interviewed the experts and found five steps to take toward a sunny mood(心情):
Over a 30-year period,University of Illinois researchers asked nearly 120,000 people how income, education, political participation, volunteer activities and close relationships affected their happiness.Reported Newsweek’s Sharon Begley on the findings,“The highest levels of happiness are found with the most stable and satisfying relationships.”
Singing aloud, talking to a stranger, raising your hand: all may increase a feeling of happiness, according to a study from Wake Forest University.Participants(参与者) followed the development of their moods for two weeks and reported feeling happier when they were more outgoing and less happy when reserved or withdrawn.
The editors of forbes.com gave $5 or $20 to 46 strangers by chance.Half the group was told to spend the money on themselves, while the other half was told to spend it on others. Those who’d shared the wealth felt much happier at the end of the day than those who’d spent it on themselves. There was no difference in happiness between those who spent $5 or $20,suggesting that it’s not how much money you spend, but how you spend it,that inspires the spirit.
Studies from the Positive Psychology Center showed that discouraged people who wrote down three good things that happened to them each day for six months reported an improved attitude.
Drinking water really can help keep you cheerful.A small 2012 study from the University of Connecticut suggested that even slight dehydration(脱水) affected the moods of its female participants.
