Among the seven wonders of the ancient architectural (建筑方面的) world, the pyramids in Egypt are the only ones still standing.
For 1,000 years, they were the tallest buildings in the world.Built with prehistoric technology, they were an architectural mystery,as strange as the Sphinx (大狮身人面像).
No one really knows how they were built. The first historical record,by the Greek writer Heroditus, came 2,000 years later.Without hard facts, there have been many theories.
Hollywood has mostly followed the examples from the Greek record:100,000 slaves worked hard for 20 years.Others believe a very large slope snaked around the pyramids. An American recently put forward the theory that kites could have lifted the 2-ton stones.
Now Houdin,a French architect, says that after studying the pyramids for eight years,he has solved the mystery with the help of 3D computer animation (三维动画).He believes the pyramids were built from the inside out through an internal slope that goes around a central point.“This is completely new.Everyone before me thought that the pyramids were built from the outside, and only from the outside,”he said.
Scholars of ancient Egypt are interested.“It’s a theory which sounds reasonable.Scholars of ancient Egypt agree it ought to be tested, and it doesn’t cause damage,so I wouldn’t be surprised that within a year,we have the final answer,”said Bob Brier,a scholar at Long Island University.
If that is the case,we’ll know the truth about the pyramids in_the_blink_of_an_eye,considering this mystery has lasted for nearly 5,000 years.

Argentina in the late nineteenth century was an exciting place.Around 1870,it was experiencing an economic(经济的)boom, and the capital,Buenos Aires, attracted many people.Farmers,as well as a flood of foreigners from Spain and Italy, came to Buenos Aires seeking jobs. These jobs didn’t pay well, and the people felt lonely and disappointed with their new life in the city.As the unhappy newcomers mixed together in the poor parts of the city, the dance known as the tango(探戈舞)came into being.
At the beginning the tango was a dance of the lower classes. It was danced in the bars and streets. At that time there were many fewer women than men,so if a man didn’t want to be left out,his only choice was to dance with another man so that he could attract the attention of the few available women.Gradually, the dance spread into the upper classes of Argentinean society and became more respectable.
In Europe at this time, strong interest in dance from around the world was beginning. This interest in international dance was especially evident in Paris.Every kind of dance from ballet(芭蕾舞) to belly dancing could be found on the stages of the Paris theaters. After tango dancers from Argentina arrived in Europe, they began to draw the interest of the public as they performed their exciting dance in cafes.Though not everyone approved of the new dance, saying it was a little too shocking, the dance did find enough supporters to make it popular.
The popularity(流行) of the tango continued to grow in many other parts of the world.Soldiers who returned to the United States from World WarⅠ brought the tango to North America. It reached Japan in 1926,and in 2003 the Argentinean embassy in Seoul hired a local tango dancer to act as a kind of dance ambassador, and promote tango dancing throughout South Korea.

He lived his whole life as a poor man.His art and talent were recognized by almost no one.He suffered from a mental illness that led him to cut off part of his left ear in 1888 and to shoot himself two years later. But after his death,he achieved world fame.Today,Dutch artist van Gogh is recognized as one of the leading artists of all time.
Now,150 years after his birth on March 30,1853,Zundert,the town of his birth, has made 2003 “The Van Gogh Year” in his honour. And the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, home to the biggest collection of his masterpieces,is marking the anniversary with exhibitions throughout the year. The museum draws around 1.3 million visitors every year. Some people enjoy the art and then learn about his life.Others are interested in his life, which then helps them understand his art.

Many people believe they are supposed to drink eight glasses of water a day,or about two liters. Why?Because that is what they have been told all their life. But a recent report offers some different advice.Experts suggest people should obey their bodies. They should drink as much water as they feel like drinking.
The report says most healthy people meet their daily needs for liquid by letting thirst be their guide.
The report is from the Institute of Medicine, which provides scientific and technical advice to the government and the public. The report contains some general suggestions. It says women should get about 2.7 liters of water daily and men about 3.7 liters. But wait—in each case, that is more than eight glasses.
There is an important difference. The report does not tell people how many glasses of water to drink. In fact, the experts say it may be impossible to know how many glasses are needed to meet these guidelines. This is because the daily water requirement can include the water contained in foods.
As you might expect, the Institute of Medicine says people need to drink more water when they are physically active. The same is true of those who live in hot climates.Depending on heat and activity, people could need twice as much water as others do.
All this, however, does not answer one question. No one seems sure why people have the idea that good health requires eight glasses of water daily. It may have started with a misunderstanding. In 1945,the National Academy of Sciences published some guidelines. Its Food and Nutrition Board said a good amount of water for most adults was 2.5 liters daily. This was based on an average of one milliliter for each calorie of food eaten.
But that was only part of what the board said.It also said that most of the amount is contained in prepared foods.

Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving(铺砌) a road can lead to less useable fresh water.A major part of the water we use every day is groundwater.Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.
Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages(短缺).Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts(干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.
Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States,a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there’s a lot we can do to lower the number.
You can take steps to save water in your home.To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day.Wash it only once a day.Run your dishwasher (洗碗机) only when it is full.Help your parents fix any leaks in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.
1.Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?
A.Using river water.
B.Throwing batteries away.
C.Paving parking lots.
D.Throwing rubbish into lakes.
2.What can be inferred from the text?
A.All water shortages are due to human behavior.
B.It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.
C.There is much we can do to reduce family size.
D.The average family in America makes proper use of water.
3.The last paragraph is intended to________.
A.show us how to fix leaks at home
B.tell us how to run a dishwasher
C.prove what drinking glass is best for us
D.suggest what we do to save water at home
4.The text is mainly about________.
A.why paving roads reduces our water
B.how much we depend on water to live
C.why droughts occur more in dry climates
D.how human activity affects our water supply

Can better food create better people? This is the true idea that is driving the development of today’s farming quickly.
The future food is the best food.Scientists will put real-time sensors into our bodies that can read the information of what our bodies need.A personal health system will be able to study the information that the sensor provides before making a food order. Then the order will go to the local food supplier, who will get in touch with the food maker on the farm. The entire supply will be controlled by computer according to the needs of the end user.Food from restaurants will come in over a million kinds.Customers will be able to order the food that is really good for their health.
By 2050,a farm will use technologies that will leave today’s farming far behind.A farm,as shown by Despommier,a farming scientist, will be a 30-storey-tall building and used to grow plants without soil. The farms of the future will grow half-plant,half-animal products, and people will be able to control nature.Special crops will be grown in this controlled special space, such as short stalk corn, personalized fruits and vegetables.
Besides growing food, new ways will be found to “grow” products. We will also be able to control plants in other ways. For example,we will some day be able to “train” a tree to grow its branches into the shape of tables, coffee tables, chairs,or rocking chairs.Once these unusual branches are fully grown, farmers can walk up to the tree and harvest the rocking chairs by cutting them off, which is the same as harvesting apples or pears.
The entire production area in the future will be managed by a robot that travels up and down doing all the necessary jobs of planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting.

After my husband died suddenly from a heart attack on the tennis court,my world crashed around me.I was overwhelmed with the responsibilities of earning a living, caring for the children and just keeping_my_head_above_water.
I was fortunate to find a wonderful housekeeper to care for the children during the week, but from Friday nights to Monday mornings, the children and I were alone, and frankly I was uneasy.
One Friday evening I came home from work to find a big beautiful German shepherd on our doorstep. He gave every indication that he intended to enter the house and make it his home.I agreed to let him sleep in the basement until the next day.
The following morning we made phone calls and checked lost-and-found ads for German’s owner, but with no results.German, meanwhile, actually made himself part of the family.Saturday night he was still with us,sleeping in the basement.
On Sunday I had planned to take the children on a picnic. When we stopped to get gas at a local station,we were amazed to see German racing to the gas station after us.He settled down in the back for the ride to the picnic.
Monday morning I let him out for a run while the children got ready for school. He didn’t come back.As evening came and German didn’t appear,we were all disappointed. We were convinced that he had gone home or been found by his owner, and that we would never see him again. We were wrong. The next Friday evening,German was back on our doorstep.Again we took him in,and again he stayed until Monday morning, when our housekeeper arrived.
This pattern repeated itself every weekend for almost 10 months. We grew more and more fond of German and we took comfort in his strong, warm presence, and we felt safe with him near us.
Each week, between German’s visits,I grew a little stronger,a little braver and more able to cope;every weekend I enjoyed his company. Then one Monday morning we patted his head and let him out for what turned out to be the last time.He never came back.We never saw or heard of German again.
I think of him often.I believe German was sent because he was needed, and because no matter how abandoned and alone we feel, somehow, somewhere, someone knows and cares. We are never really alone.

Yves Gomes is now a university student in Maryland, but he may soon have to leave the country.“I still want to continue with my college education and I want to be able to study here and go to medical school,” he said.
Gomes is one of thousands of young illegal immigrants who grew up in the United States and are now studying at American colleges and universities. He is doing well in his studies, but he is fighting deportation to India,a country he left with his parents when he was just 14 months old. They were deported more than a year ago.
“If I was to go back to India I would just feel like all of that would have gone to waste because here at least I am still able to go to college,” he said.
Immigration is a divisive political issue in the United States with some 11 million people in the country illegally. One element of the debate is the hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants brought to the United States before the age of 16.Pending legislation known as the DREAM Act would give them a chance to become legal residents if they complete two years of college or join the military.
Milanie Schwartz,a politically conservative student at the University of Texas, explains why some Americans oppose the legislation.
“We think it’s unfair that students who are illegal immigrants would get a fast track to citizenship, while people who did come here legally wouldn’t have those same opportunities,” she said.
“The question is legalization or not,” said Jon Feere, who also opposes the DREAM Act.He is a policy analyst with the Center for Immigration Studies in Washington and is concerned about the act’s effect on the economy.“There’s a lot of unemployment in the United States right now.And there are already many legal immigrants who are already here and who are desperate for those jobs,” he said.
But supporters of the DREAM Act say well-educated immigrants would help the economy.Raul Hinojosa is an immigration research analyst at UCLA.“Not letting them contribute to the economy would not only lose all the financial investment we have already made in these youths, but we would lose literally trillions of dollars of potential value because they want and are ready to contribute to the US economy,” he said.
That’s exactly what Yves Gomes wants to do—finish school and become a doctor. He says without the DREAM Act,many students’ dreams will be lost.“They are studying at Harvard, they are studying at UCLA—the top universities—and they all have bright futures and because of the system they are going to be told to go home,go back to a country they don’t even know,” he said.

As a parent you may realize the importance education has in our lives, however, your child hates listening to any of your arguments, thoughts and ideas.A student uninterested in education will miss college lectures and perform extremely poorly in assessment tests. In the worst cases, students may stop attending the school or college and sit at home without any concern for career, education and life.In order to encourage the students back to their college life and career, parents should first find out what causes the lack of motivation in students.
Low self-respect in students forces them to give up challenges.Even if these students try and complete some tasks, they’re clouded by many negative thinking patterns that block the flow of confidence in their personalities.
Lack of love at home can also result in the lack of motivation in students. If the parents are away from the kids or students, and they’re unaware of what their kid is doing in school, then the child feels neglected and steps back from taking responsibilities and challenges.
Constant poor performance lowers the self-confidence of the student and the student will feel lost in the crowd of brilliant students.Such academic pressures can make students lose their motivation.
Early adolescence is a phase when the students become highly sensitive and form new ideas about their values of individualism and identity,so they easily lose the motivation.
Nothing can be a better motivation for students than their teachers and parents.Schools should organize motivation activities for students, like games, sports and competitions, which are important for the whole personality development of the students.Involve them in some activities like dancing, music etc.that they’re interested in,so that they can learn new hobbies and increase their confidence. You should stop ignoring your child’s studies and do understand his need to be heard. In short, lack of motivation in students can be completely reduced if parents and teachers understand the kid and support him to break any of his negative patterns of thought.

More and more private cars are being bought by Chinese families.Family cars are intended to be convenient, but will they really bring convenience to everyday life in a country with such a large population? Moreover, driving cars will probably make people sit all the time without any exercise. It will do harm to their health.Riding bicycles is much better. It is not practical for China to popularize family cars in the near future, especially in our big cities.
There are a number of reasons why private cars are becoming popular in China. To start with, many people have become wealthy. They can afford to buy their own cars.Besides, with their improved living conditions, many people think that they should have more comfortable means of traveling. They are no longer satisfied with bicycles or motorcycles. Finally, new bank systems allow people to buy cars with loans. Thus, more and more people have cars.
However, private cars have caused some problems in China. One problem is traffic jams. With so many cars being used, the streets have become very crowded. The number of accidents has increased.Another problem is air pollution.People are starting to complain of the waste gas given off by cars.Fortunately, local governments have become aware of these problems and are trying their best to solve them.

Computers and mobile phones have greatly reduced our chance to write Chinese characters. Many of us have the experience that we forget how to write when picking up a pen.
There are two reasons for this problem.First, people depend on modern devices to communicate with others, thus we don’t write letters or send greeting cards.Second,a lot of office work is conducted on computers, which makes it unnecessary for us to write Chinese characters.
However, characters are part of our traditional culture. So we should take measures to improve our writing.Keeping a diary is a good way to write with a pen.And schools should offer students more chances to write with pens or brushes so that they can improve their handwriting.
