Young adult film-makers all hope to show their works in international festivals like Sundance and Toronto. But what about really young film-makers who aren’t in film school yet and aren’t,strictly speaking, even adults?
They are at the heart of Wingspan Arts Kids Film Festival, tomorrow,in a setting any director might envy:Lincoln Centre.Complete with “red carpet” interviews and various awards, the festival has much in common with events for more experienced movie-makers,except for the age of the participants:about 8 to 18.
“What’s really exciting is that it’s film for kids by kids,” said Cori Gardner, managing director of Wingspan Arts,a nonprofit organization offering youth arts programs in the New York area. This year the festival will include films not only from Wingspan but also from other city organizations and one from a middle school in Arlington,Virginia.“We want to make this a national event,” Ms.Gardner added.
The nine shorts to be shown range from a Claymation biography of B.B.King to a science fiction adventure set in the year 3005.“A lot of the material is really mature,” Ms.Gardner said, talking about films by the New York City branch of Global Action Project,a media arts and leadership-training group.“The Choice is about the history of a family and Master Anti-Smoker is about the dangers of second-hand smoke.Dream of the Invisibles describes young immigrants’ feelings of both belonging and not belonging in their adopted country.”
The festival will end with an open reception at which other films will be shown. These include a music video and a full-length film whose title is Pressures.

The Oscars,or to give them their proper name,“The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards of Merit”,are awards given to people who work in specific areas of the film industry.
Actors and directors, costume designers and songwriters,make-up artists and sound engineers, among others, all have the chance to win an Oscar.
The awards themselves are small statuettes(小雕像),around 34cm tall and weighing just over 3.5kg.The golden statuettes are all the same—they show a man (with no clothes on!) holding a sword and standing on a reel of film.
Sadly for the winner, the statue is not solid gold, but just gold plated. In actual value it is only worth around $250.However,although the statuette itself is not worth very much, winning one can be worth millions of dollars to the film studios.
Winning an Oscar means that the world top film-makers like your work.It is the best publicity any film can get.If a film can have Academy Award Winner under its title, many more people will go to see it.
The Academy was first formed in May 1927,and the awards have been given every year since then. This ceremony, when the awards are presented to the winners,is the highlight of the Hollywood calendar. It is the most glamorous(富有魅力的) and star-studded(星光灿烂的) evening of the whole year, and is shown on television in 90 countries around the world and watched by over 500 million people.
Everyone who is famous in the film world attends the awards ceremony. Most arrive in huge limousines (豪华轿车),wearing wonderful clothes. The Oscar ceremony is the one night when Hollywood really is as glamorous as it appears.
For the first few years of the Academy, the Academy Awards themselves were simply called “The Statuettes”.There are various stories which explain why they were at last given the nickname Oscars. The most popular is that the Academy librarian,Margaret Herrick, exclaimed when she saw the golden statuette,“He looks just like my Uncle Oscar!” and the name stuck.
Whatever the reason,it is certainly easier to say Oscar, than to say “Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards of Merit”,so the little golden man is now on a first name basis with everyone.

Though war is something people hate,Director Feng Xiaoning often exposes his audience to it.
“If we don’t impress the audience, who are without the painful experience of war, with the cruel injury to life and human nature war causes, how can we bring them a love of peace and objection to war?” asked the director with anger in his eyes.
After Red River Valley and Lover’s Grief over the Yellow River, both of which star Chinese model and actress Ning Jing,Feng drew a satisfactory full stop to his war trilogy last month with Purple Sunset.
The film tells a story which took place in 1945,at the very moment when World War Ⅱ was drawing to an end.A Chinese peasant and a Soviet woman soldier flee into a forest, where they seize a Japanese girl. They follow the girl in the hope that she will take them out of the forest, but instead they arrive in a Japanese base.Humanity prevents them from killing the young, innocent victim of Japanese militarism. This humanity, the longing for peace and eagerness to survive, make the three unite.
“If people are touched by justice, tolerance and unselfishness,I think I have achieved my goal,” Feng said.
Feng admits that there are violent and bloody scenes in the film, such as tanks fighting and Japanese burning Chinese people alive,to show the cruelty of war.But that’s never his personal preference,he says.“Everyone who has watched my films can tell how much I detest war,” he said.“I wrote all the things for my war films by myself.Whenever I finished one,I felt as though I had suffered great pain.”
Feng regards every one of his productions as an opportunity to learn about human nature and humanity. In spite of violent scenes which frighten and sicken the audience,a balance is sought with beautiful scenery.Just like the snowy mountains in Red River Valley and the grand plateau in Lover’s Grief over the Yellow River,a beautiful vast grassland appears in this film.“I used to study art and I appreciate beautiful things,” Feng said.“I believe that films should offer the audience a chance to enjoy beauty.”
1.Director Feng Xiaoning shot war films because ________.
A.he was deeply interested in such a topic
B.he wanted to give the audience the painful experience of war
C.he hoped to arouse people’s love of peace and objection to war
D.he dreamed of becoming a world-famous director
2.A Chinese peasant and a Soviet woman soldier seized a Japanese girl so that ________.
A.they could find the Japanese base easily
B.she could take them out of the forest
C.they could kill her for revenge
D.it would cause the Japanese militarism to give in
3.The underlined word “detest” in this passage means “________”.
A.hate B.like
C.flee D.know about
4.How many films are mentioned in the passage?

Do you love the holidays but you wish they weren’t so stressful, busy and likely to knock your health goals off course?Of course, you do.However, carrying around extra weight and feeling stress are two sure-fire ways to harm your heart. So it’s fundamental to know how to ensure your holidays are enjoyable and stress-free without overeating, packing on the pounds or harming your heart.
The first step you must take if you want to have a stress-free,fun-filled holiday season is to set your intentions for what you want your holidays to be like.Come up with a plan of action by reviewing what went well and didn’t go well in the past.Next, consider what you’ll do differently this time around. How will you change so that you keep what’s good while getting rid of what’s bad about the holidays?
Have a plan to free up time.A great way to do this is to first make a list of all the tasks you’re responsible for.Next, you should indicate which of these tasks you truly enjoy and which you don’t like at all.For any tasks you don’t like, think of a way to have someone else do them, put them off for another time like January,or just don’t do them at all.Now you have extra time to relax or do something you really enjoy.
Use the painter’s pallet (调色板) approach while eating. For example, taste a little bit of each thing on the buffet table so you don’t feel deprived (缺少食物的).When you’ve done, decide which thing you thought tasted the absolutely best and go back to have a regular serving of that particular holiday food.
Many people gain on average between 1 and 4 pounds each holiday season because of overeating. To eat less at holiday table, drink some water before meals to help the stomach feel fuller, thus decreasing the appetite. You also can chew the food properly and count to five before swallowing. Then wait another five seconds for the next bite. Not only will you be able to enjoy the taste of the dish better, you’ll also give the body more time to digest the food properly.

You must have played or at least heard about the popular game—Angry Birds, which has already grown to 400 million downloads owing to its high popularity.
What’s more,it is reported that the number of monthly users of this game now amounts to 130 million, daily active users has reached 30 million, and 300 million minutes of the game is played each and every day.And perhaps what’s so impressive about these crazy growth numbers is that the popularity of this game really hasn’t been helped by much marketing(市场营销) at all.The total marketing budget of this game is $0.
Yet,perhaps what is most exciting for Angry Birds fans is that a new bird is coming to the game for Halloween.Today, fans may have noticed that Rovio, the company behind this game, put a photo on their Facebook page, which immediately led to speculation on whether or not Rovio would be introducing a new bird into the game. And according to Andrew Stalbow, the manager of Rovio, that’s exactly what’s going to happen.
He did not give details,so we’re not sure what the bird will look like, but judging by the photo,it looks like this bird will be orange,at least in part.

With the development of websites that offer chat services, making friends on the Internet is becoming more and more popular.Whether making online friends is good or bad depends on what you expect from the person. If you go by the popular saying “A friend in need is a friend indeed”,then making friends online isn’t a good idea because online friends cannot come to help you.But if you just wish to spend some time while you’re online and share your thoughts, you can make friends online.
Really, there are some advantages of making online friends. For example, when you’re living away from home, your online friends can be a good support system. They might make you feel not lonely any more. Also, making friends online can make you learn more because you may get to know many new things from the online friends.
However, the purpose of a stranger wanting to be a friend online is often not friendship, especially if you’re a girl. The person,if you add him as a friend, can trouble you in the future. What’s worse, adding the person as a friend means he’ll be able to know all your details. The person,if not good, can misuse your personal details to do something bad.
Therefore, when starting a conversation with any new person, don’t talk too much about yourself in the first days.
Also, don’t show your address and mobile number to the person you’re chatting with. When chatting with a person through social networking sites, make sure that the person has no access to your personal details and photos.
In a word,if you’re just looking for sharing of thoughts, online friendship is OK,but don’t expect lifelong friendship from a stranger on the web.Title:Making Friends on the Internet

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so,however.Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to.Here’s how.
Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do.After making this list, you should make a schedule(日程,日程表) of your time.First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc.,then decide a good, regular time for studying.Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment(娱乐).A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study.Look around the house for a good study area.Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios,or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teachers say.Really listening in class means less work later.Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school,go over your notes.Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, reading that material will become more useful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude to tests. The purpose of a
test is to show what you have learned about a subject. They help you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test,so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

第三部分 阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
请认真阅读下列短文,从短文后各题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
The average temperature around the world is rising.People living in the US Midwest might find a fact hard to believe, though. The scientists suggest that the change in the Midwest climate may have happened because of farming.
The first study was led by David Changnon,a climatologist (气候学家) at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.Changnon and his team studied temperature records from the sites in the Midwest. They found that since 1970,the average temperature in the region during July and August has gone down—by up to one degree Fahrenheit (华氏度)—from what it was during the years between 1930 and 1969.Their investigation also showed that the average rainfall in those states during those two months has increased.Between 1970 and 2009,about 0.33 inches more rain fell than between 1930 and 1969.These_changes may be connected by humidity (湿度),Changnon says.Humidity is the measure of how much moisture is in the air.Humid air, which contains a lot of moisture, takes longer to heat up than dry air,Changnon notes. And humid air often releases its moisture through rainfall.
So where did the extra moisture in the air come from?Changnon points to farms in the region. As plants grow, they pull moisture from the ground and release it into the air.And among plants, soybean (大豆) and corn plants release a lot of moisture.Midwestern farms now plant more soybeans and corn than in the past, with 97 percent of farmland today planted with these two crops. In the 1930s,corn and soybeans covered only about 57 percent,Changnon says.He also notes that the plants are planted closer together now than they used to be,so there are more plants per acre than in the past.
The second study, like Changnon’s,also found an increase in rainfall in the same area. But it points to another possible source for the increased moisture.Alan Robock at Rutgers University was part of the team that produced the second study and presented the group’s findings. The team found that irrigation practices in the Great Plains have changed over the years. The researchers studied a vast area in the region. They found that in 1930,farmers in that region irrigated only about 1.8 million acres of farmland. In 1980,however,farmers irrigated nearly 15 million acres.Plants use the water and then release it into the air.
These results by Changnon and Robock and their colleagues are the first step toward understanding a change in the weather.
56.What does the underlined term “These changes” refer to?
A.Lower temperatures and more rainfall.
B.Higher temperatures and high humidity.
C.Making a record both in the past and now.
D.The two periods of the 40-year investigation.

China’s film industry experienced hardships and setbacks after the founding of the PRC.The beginning was brilliant with many fine movies showing on the screen. Most of these tell stories about the war of resistance against the Japanese aggression as well as about the civil war, such as Dong Cunrui (1955) by Guo Wei.These movies made everything seem fresh due to lively roles and plot. But they were limited by a lack of individual artistic character.
Filmmaking fell on “disaster time” during the “Cultural Revolution”. The film industry was severely restricted and no film was shot between 1966-1972.Films made between 1973-1976 were strongly affected by revolutionary thinking and became tools of the “Gang of Four”.
Following the “Cultural Revolution”,artists in film began to free their minds and the film industry again flourished as a medium of popular entertainment.Animated films using a variety of folk arts, such as paper cuts, shadow plays, and puppetry, were also very popular with children.
In the 1980s,China’s filmmakers started an all-round exploration and the range of film subjects extended. Many realism films reflecting the change of society as well as people’s ideas were produced.People experienced the magic of the fifth generation of filmmakers.Among this group Zhang Yimou first won an international prize with Red Sorghum (1987).They broke with traditional filmmaking in screenplay and film structure.
In the 1990s,China experienced prosperity in its film industry. The government allowed the showing of foreign movies.More China’s films won awards at international film festivals, such as Ju Dou (1990) by Zhang Yimou. However, these films encountered more criticism, particularly for their stylized form and neglect of audience response.
Meanwhile,a group of spirited young filmmakers began facing reality. They were the sixth generation:Zhang Yuan,East Palace West Palace (1996),Wang Xiaoshuai,Beijing Bicycle (2000),and many others.Their serious attitude towards the art of film and life was to create youthful vigour in China’s film industry.

In the 1920s,archaeologists discovered some prehistoric human bones in Zhoukoudian,a small village about 50 kilometers southwest of Beijing, which changed China’s knowledge of its history. The remains were three teeth. In 1929,a complete skull was also discovered.Eventually, archaeologists found almost 200 items, including 6 skulls and over 150 teeth. These discoveries proved the existence of human species who lived in the area between 700,000 and 200,000 years ago.
Four sites where Peking Man and his relations lived were discovered on the northern face of Longgushan. They lived in the limestone caves in the area. However, the span of life of Peking Man was short.About 70% probably died before the age of 14.Fewer than 5% lived to the age of 50.Ashes were found which showed they used fire for cooking food and also for light, warmth and protection from wild beasts. This is the earlier evidence of the use of fire anywhere in the world. They also made tools of bones and sharpened stones.
When Japan invaded China in 1937,excavations at the area stopped and most of the fossils disappeared. They have never been found. After the PRC was founded in 1949,the work started again and Zhoukoudian became an important tourist attraction.

It was a very happy family. The life was fairly well off.Father,Leopold, was a music master in Austria.Mother was warm-hearted.There were two children,Marianne,a schoolgirl, and little Wolfgang,a child not quite four years old.Marianne was learning to play the piano, and day after day Leopold stood behind her as she practiced. How patient her father was,and how cleverly he showed Marianne how to play some particularly difficult pieces! She was making progress, very good progress, and that was excellent. And there, almost lost in the big chair, sat Wolfgang, who never had to be told to keep quiet when Marianne was practicing.
One evening at sunset Leopold patted Marianne’s shoulder, saying she had done well.At that moment Wolfgang climbed on his father’s knee and begged to be allowed to play the pretty piece Marianne had now mastered. What a joke that was!Picking up his baby son,Leopold laughed and said,“Look at your small hands. You must wait, little man!”
There was no end of fun during tea,and Marianne had to tell her mother about Wolfgang wanting to play a difficult piece. When the meal was finished,Marianne helped to clear away the dishes.Suddenly Leopold got up.“Listen!”said he in a surprised voice.“Listen!”“Marianne is playing the piece better than ever!”
But Marianne was washing dishes in the kitchen.

An independent source
The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences “Blue Book 2010” just repeated a widely accepted fact—the World Wide Web has become an independent source of news and information in this country.
Owing largely to its democratic,if not chaotic, nature, the Internet has not been subordinate to any specific governments since its birth. We have seen consistent attempts to influence it,but to date those efforts have turned out to be unsuccessful.
Whenever something believed to be harmful to public opinion has occurred, usually there were attempts to supervise the online flow of information. But as we have seen in the past year, such measures have often backfired, resulting in even further-reaching ripples. From the eventual not-guilty sentence for Deng Yujiao, the Hubei woman who stabbed to death a local official who was said to be attempting to sexually harass her,to the scandal of human “bait” used by local authorities in Shanghai, the Web proved to be a powerful weapon against merciless acts in the hands of otherwise voiceless men on the street.
With the traditional media absent or hesitating, the Internet entered deep into the territory of controversy, says the “blue book”,becoming a platform for netizens to share information and gather public opinion.
For those having difficulty adapting to the new reality of greater clarity of the Internet age, this is no doubt something to hate.We have witnessed some “unfortunate” local officials severely scolded for proud words, some even ended up being dismissed for what they said. The most “unlucky” of them all might be one in Nanjing, whose unpopular comments on real estate prices drew netizen curiosity about the watch he wore and the cigarettes he smoked, followed by an official investigation that found him guilty of corruption and finally landed him in prison.
Given the Internet’s influential role in various incidents of public concern, authorities have demonstrated impressive emphasis upon paying attention to public opinion expressed on the Internet.Local authorities are becoming more responsive to the Web.And we are sure such responsiveness will at last translate into responsiveness to public concerns in the real world, even though the process may take much longer.
The rise,or popularization to be exact,of the Internet as a new and increasingly mainstream means of communication, while posing challenges to those accustomed to traditional concepts of governance,at the same time presents invaluable opportunities for those truly into constructive interactions with the masses. For one thing,it can be a sensitive indicator of public concerns.
For that alone, the authorities should hug the Web and take advantage of its democratic nature to promote popular participation.

M:Yes,we Greek reached the top finally.
W:What do you think are the important reasons for your success?
M:Let me see...Unlike some national teams, their players play in different countries, they need time to train together, but most of our players are playing in the Greek League. We know each other;and good communication in and out of the fields is one of the reasons for our success.
W:And what else helps you?
M:Um...A football game is a kind of teamwork. We can’t only depend on the big star in the field. We are working like one engine.
W:What role does your German coach play in your team?
M:Well,he’s great. He helped us to study and learn from other teams. But the so-called strong teams thought it was worthless to study the Greek team. When they realized that,it was too late.To speak honestly, the biggest reason for our victory is that some strong national teams didn’t play well.
W:Thank you for accepting my interview.Again congratulations.

Most Beijing residents are interested in environmental issues and are aware of their responsibility in this respect, according to a recent survey.
The public are found to have paid more attention to their living conditions, such as drinking water, air quality, and noise. The respondents gave a “medium mark” of 70.76 points to describe the level of their satisfaction about their surroundings.
A total of 1,511 responded to the survey.66.7 percent of them gave a positive assessment of the city’s environmental protection efforts, especially as regards the improvement of air quality. However, there are still many who complain about the impact of air and noise pollution.
97.09 percent of the respondents said they agree with the notion that it is everyone’s responsibility to protect the environment, while over 70 percent said the cost of the environmental improvement should be offset by public finance or borne by those who cause it;only one third said they were ready to contribute financially to environmental protection.
82 percent of the respondents said they have taken part in some form of environmental protection campaign. The Proportion of people who are willing to“Drive One Day Less”rose by 31.1 percent, replacing tree-planting and trash picking as the main volunteer activities.

As can be seen from the cartoon, two ladies living in the opposite flat say “hello” when they happen to meet each other. The two women don’t know each other even if they are neighbors.
It is the exact reflection of interpersonal relationships in the modern world. As we all know, most people live in apartments. They don’t like to go out after work, and they will stay at home watching TV or playing computer games. They don’t have any connections even with their closest neighbors, who seem no different from people they meet every day in the street. So it is no good to us,nor to our society, and it will make people feel more lonely.
As far as I’m concerned,it’s high time that we took some measures to improve it.People who live in the same zone can often be organized to have some activities together. We should ask people to be friendly to each other. They should smile and greet each other. Then our society will become more harmonious in this way.

第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Microwaves may be great at warming up food, but what about warming people?
Using microwaves to directly heat owners of a room would save much of the energy wasted by heating walls and furniture. And despite popular ideas about microwaves, this technique would be safe, according to Charles R.Buffler of the Microwave Research Center in Marlborough,New Hampshire.Low-power microwaves only penetrate(贯穿) the skin (low-power microwave penetration in a ham is about 0.2 inches, for example) and with no negative effects.
To test this idea,Buffler subjected himself to microwaves in a special room using a standard 500-watt,2,459 MHz magnetron(磁控管).He found that a person will start to feel warmth at about 20 milliwatts per square centimeter(mw./sq.cm.);a satisfactory feeling of warmth occurs between 35 and 50 mw./sq.cm.By comparison,a person standing in noonday summer sun feels the amount of 85 mw./sq.cm.And a frozen meat pie in your microwave oven receives about 1,000 mw./sq.cm.
“In houses of the future, each room could be provided with its own magnetron,”says Buffler. When you stepped into the living room, for example,a motion detector(运动感应器) would turn on the magnetron, filling the room with low-power microwaves. In the same way that a microwave oven heats up a hamburger, but not the plate it’s on,you would feel warmth from the microwaves without changing the temperature of your coffee table.(You could, however, make your favourite easy chair even more comfortable by treating it with a radiation-absorbing chemical.)
While it might be some time before homeowners are comfortable enough with the idea to set up whole-body microwave heaters in houses,Buffler says microwaves may attract livestock(家畜) farmers.Lambs that are born outdoors in winter, for example, are frequently lost to cold.Microwaves could warm the lambs safely and quickly.
56.Which of the following can tell the main idea of the passage?
A.A new heating system.
B.A new microwave oven.
C.A popular technique.
D.The magnetron.
57.According to Paragraph 2,which of the following does NOT describe the characteristics of a microwave heater?
A.It directly heats people in a room.
B.It heats walls and furniture in a room.
C.It is safe.
D.It saves energy.
58.The test conducted by Buffler shows that when a person feels comfortable warmth,he receives about ________.
A.20 mw./sq.cm. B.40 mw./sq.cm.
C.60 mw./sq.cm. D.85 mw./sq.cm.
59.According to Paragraph 4,which of the following fills the room with low-power microwaves?
A.The magnetron.
B.The motion detector.
C.The microwave oven.
D.The radiation-absorbing chemical.

Thank you.President Bok,former President Rudenstine, incoming President Faust, members of the Harvard Corporation and the Board of Overseers, members of the faculty, parents, and especially, the graduates.
I want to thank Harvard for this honor.I’ve been waiting for more than 30 years to say this,“Dad,I always told you I’d come back and get my degree.” I’ll be changing my job next year, and it will be nice to finally have a college degree on my resume.I guess that makes me valedictorian of my own special class.I did the best of everyone who failed.
I applaud the graduates for taking a much more direct route to your degrees. For my part,I’m just happy that the Crimson called me “Harvard’s most successful dropout”.
But taking a serious look back,I do have one big regret,I left Harvard with no real awareness of the awful inequities(不公正) in the world.I learned a lot here at Harvard about new ideas in economics and politics.I got great exposure to the advances being made in the sciences. But humanity’s greatest advances are not in its discoveries—but in how those discoveries are applied to reduce inequity.Whether through democracy, strong public education, quality health care,or broad economic opportunity, reducing inequity is the highest human achievement.
I left campus knowing little about the millions of young people cheated out of educational opportunities here in this country. And I knew nothing about the millions of people living in unspeakable poverty and disease in developing countries. It took me decades to find out.
You graduates came to Harvard at a different time. You know more about the world’s inequities than the classes that came before. In your years here,I hope you’ve had a chance to think about how,in this age of accelerating technology,we can finally take on these inequities, and we can solve them.
Now,this task is open-ended.It can never be finished. But a conscious effort to answer this challenge can change the world.Yes,inequity has been with us forever, but the new tools we have to cut through complexity have not been with us forever. They are new. They can help us make the most of our caring—and that’s why the future can be different from the past. The defining and ongoing innovations of this age—biotechnology, the personal computer, and the Internet give us a chance we’ve never had before to end extreme poverty and end death from preventable disease.
60.Who is the speaker of the article?
A.A Harvard graduate.
B.A dropout’s parent.
C.A fresh student in Harvard.
D.A principle.
61.What did the speaker learn while he was in the university 30 years ago?
A.Approaches to solving poverty.
B.Economic and political discrimination.
C.Advances in science.
D.New ways to change the world.
62.What could be the best title of the passage?
A.Humanity’s greatest advance
B.Harvard’s most successful dropout
C.Inequity in the USA
D.The best student in Harvard
63.Which of the statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Humanity’s greatest advances are in its discoveries.
B.There is no way to make any change about the inequity in the world.
C.The graduates now know more about the world than those before.
D.The new discoveries help us relieve inequity and poverty.

Travel doesn’t have to be expensive.
A young couple named Xiexie and Caicai has proved it by visiting 18 Asian countries on a budget of 40,000 yuan. But when they broke the news on Sina Weibo last week, many people didn’t seem to believe them.“It couldn’t be true,”said a microblogger named Uncle Fox on Sina Weibo.“I just don’t buy it.”
Well, the truth is that there are smart ways to see the world.Let’s explore some unconventional ways of travelling.
House sitting
A surprising number of householders worldwide will let you live in their homes for free while they are away.
And it is completely one-way—you don’t have to offer your house in exchange.
You need to help take care of their pets and plants making sure that everything runs smoothly just as if the owner were at home.
To become a house sitter, you can go to housesitworld.com or mindmyhouse.com to register for membership, which sometimes requires a small fee.
After that, you can search for house sitting assignments and contact house owners by email.
If the householder is interested, you’ll get an interview, probably by phone. And you’ll have to sign copies of house sitting agreement before you get the key to the house.
Laboring on a farm
This is a way to learn about sustainable living and meet local farmers. In return for volunteer work on organic farms, your hosts offer free food and accommodation. You usually work for at least four hours a day and tasks range from composting to building with mud bricks.Willing Workers On Organic Farms(wwoofinternational.org) is a platform offering worldwide opportunities to help on organic farms.
Free accommodation and free meals are provided in return for hours of work on the farm.
And you don’t need a working visa,as no money exchanges hands.
You can contact the WWOOF office in the country that you wish to visit. After paying a membership fee(which varies from country to country),you’ll get a list of WWOOF hosts in that area and what they are looking for.
Other resources for work-trade agreements:Help Exchange(helpx.net);Work Away(workaway.info).
Hostel Voluntourism
Would you be willing to volunteer a half-day of your vacation in order to get 50 percent off the cost of your dormroom?
Many hostels around the world offer voluntourism packages which provide room discounts or free meals to guests who will participate in volounteering programs.
For example,Crested Butte International Lodge& Hostel in North America offers special discounts for volunteers who will help with the USA Pro Cycling Challenge on August 23 and 24.
Hostel Voluntourism is the perfect alternative for travellers who don’t like the idea of staying in a stranger’s home. All you need to do is to check hostels online to see if they have a volunteer discount.

You pay your host family for the accommodation in return for an unforgettable cultural experience. You should respect the house rules. You will participate fully in the family’s daily life and improve your language.Check homestayfinder.com or homestaybooking.com.

Australia has passed regulations that will enable more international students to further their education in the country. The new measures were released by the Australian Department of Tertiary Education,Skills,Jobs and Workplace Relations in September and will take effect in mid-2012.
As a result, the student visa application process for overseas students has been simplified, and the deposit required to study in Australia has been reduced.Language requirements for overseas students have also been eased. Also, overseas students receiving a higher education in Australia will be granted a working visa lasting from two to four years after graduation,as long as they meet the basic IELTS requirement.“This change will definitely make Australia a more attractive destination for Chinese students planning to study overseas,”says Wang Lan,a consultant from Education International Cooperation Group(EIC),a Beijing-based company that provides services to students wishing to study overseas. However,in the past few years, many of Wang’s student clients could not start studies in Australia because they did not meet the language requirements, visa processing took a long time and deposit regulations were tough. The change in policy is good news for the parents of students wishing to study in Australia,Wang says.
A 22-year-old female student surnamed Li,in Beijing, who is planning to do her postgraduate studies in Australia, learned about the policy change several weeks ago.“According to the previous deposit requirement for my student visa,my family was required to put down 550,000 yuan($86,850).Now we only need to prepare 410,000 yuan. This is a relief for my parents,” Li says.
She also says that the two to four years working visa makes her feel much clearer about her study plans.“I believe several years of working experience abroad will strengthen my competitiveness when I return to China,”she says.Gaining a competitive advantage is the major reason for Chinese students to study abroad, according to the report by EIC.

In offering Michael Jackson ticket holders the choice to take a refund or receive their unusable tickets as souvenirs,AEG have introduced music fans to one of the most unmanageable problems in the mathematical sciences. If nearly everybody takes the refund then the tickets, designed by the_King_of_Pop himself, will become collectors’ items and worth a fortune. However,if all 750,000 fans take their tickets then they will all hold worthless bits of fancy paper.
The choice facing fans is similar to the El Farol bar problem, which has been the subject of hundreds of academic papers and inspired a whole field:minority game theory. That is,if you reason that every Michael Jackson fan will take a refund then you should take the ticket, but they will reason in the same way and there will be a flood of souvenirs,so you should ask for your money back, but then...
So,with the benefit of the hundreds of academic papers from scientists around the world, what should a Times reader who holds a ticket do?The research tells us that,if you assume everybody else will use the same strategy as you, then the best you can do is to throw a dice(骰子):deciding whether or not to keep the ticket according to a probability determined by demand for tickets and price. However, working out the probability is tough and most fans, without the benefit of minority game theory, won’t be tossing a dice.
There is one huge factor in the Michael Jackson problem which isn’t in the standard EI Farol bar problem.Hype(炒作).If the owners of the EI Farol bar distributed fliers(传单) announcing it was going to be quiet next week, then it would be a safe bet to stay at home with a glass of wine.So my advice would be to read the newspapers and decide what to do on the basis of the experts’ advice. If all the articles you read say the tickets will be collectors’ items then ask for a refund, and if they all accuse AEG of cheating crazy fans then take the ticket. It was, after all, designed by Michael Jackson.
72.In the Para 1,the underlined part “the King of Pop” refers to “________”.
A.EI Farol B.Michael Jackson
C.a ticket holder D.a souvenir keeper
73.The burning problem Michael Jackson ticket holders have to deal with is________.
A.what advice to take
B.how to get their money back
C.how to deal with the tickets
D.how to make a fortune
74.It isn’t said but implied that “minority game theory” is a theory about________.
A.people’s reasoning B.Jackson’s strategy
C.experts’ advice D.minority’s bet
75.What the writer advises the ticket holders to do is________.
A.to throw a dice B.to follow the experts
C.to read the newspaper D.to take the ticket

Last_week,I_had_a_survey_about_the_activities_the_students_of_our_class_did_at_noon_at_school.The results are as follows. Many students, about 55 percent, were doing their homework.About 30 percent were having a rest.About 10 percent were listening to MP3.Only 5 percent of them were eating snacks at that time.
As is shown in the chart,we always have too much homework to do every day.We students should learn to balance our spare time and studies.Just like a saying goes,“All work but no play makes Jack a dull boy.”What’s more,it’s necessary for us students to have a good rest at noon so that we will be energetic to attend lessons in the very afternoon.
Therefore, make full use of your time, get your work done more efficiently and then go in for more out-of-classroom activities.Only in this way can we enjoy a healthier life.
