Ⅰ.阅读理解
More than 10 million Chinese cultural relics have been lost overseas, most of which were stolen and illegally shipped out of China during the times of war before 1949.About 1.67 million pieces are housed in more than 200 museums in 47 countries, which accounts for 10 percent of all lost Chinese cultural relics, and the rest are in the hands of private collectors.
Most of these treasures are owned by museums or private collectors in the United States,Europe,Japan and Southeast Asian countries. There are more than 23,000 pieces in the British Museum, most of which were stolen or bought for pennies more than 100 years ago.
The major method to recover these national treasures was to buy them back.In some cases, private collectors donated the relics to the government. Also the government can turn to official channels(渠道) to demand the return of relics.
In 2003,a priceless bronze pig’s head dating from the Qing Dynasty was returned to its home in Beijing after it was removed by the Anglo-French Allied Army over 140 years ago.Macao entrepreneur(企业家) Stanley Ho donated 6 million yuan to buy it back from a US art collector and then donated it to the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.
Although buying-back is the most feasible way to recover the lost treasures, limited funding is always a big headache.
In recent years, the Chinese government has improved efforts to recover the precious cultural relics lost overseas. It has started a national project on the recovery of the treasures and has set up a database(数据库) collecting relevant information. It has signed several international agreements with many countries on this matter, and is also looking for international cooperation to recover the relics by working closely with several international organizations.

B.It is now in the Poly Art Museum in Beijing.
C.It was donated by the French government to ChinA.

Using Internet May Harm Your Mental Health
Internet use appears to cause a decline in psychological well-being,according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.
Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less frequently, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually appeared to cause the bad feelings.
Researchers are puzzled over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.
The fact that Internet users reduce time available for family and friends may account for the drop in well-being,researchers hypothesized(假设).Faceless, bodiless “virtual” communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower.Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world via the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.
“But it’s important to remember this is not about the technology,it’s about how it is used,” says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study’s sponsors.“It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”

Using Internet Does Harm to One’s Mental Health
A research shows that people using the Internet may be badly influenced psychologically.Experts pointed out it’s because they spend less time in actual communication or the online world that makes them dissatisfied with their lives.
I also agree that spending too much time on the Internet has a bad effect on one’s mental health. There are so many interesting things on the Net,such as online movies, games,OICQ and so on.People always can’t resist the temptation and spend a lot of time on it,thus preventing them from enjoying their time in the real world.
Some of my classmates drown themselves in surfing the Internet for a whole weekend, which really does harm to their mental health. Therefore, parents should take some measures to protect their children’s mental health.First, parents should limit the time for their kids to surf the Internet. What’s more, kids should be encouraged to communicate with people in the real world.Last but not least, parents should spend more time with their kids outdoors so that their kids can experience something different besides computers.

Laptop computers are popular all over the world.People use them on trains and airplanes,in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want.Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake,a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mails to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home,in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!

A home computer not only helps children master the old ways of learning, but also opens up possibilities that simply aren’t available in traditional education. Some software, for example, allows kids to make decisions and see the results in different situations. The World Wide Web encourages young minds to move easily from link to link, topic to topic. The best software draws children into learning by making them curious—what if I click on this picture, drag this over here, visit that website?
Knowing how to use a computer also encourages a child’s confidence.Kids figure out quickly that computers are powerful, and mastering the machine makes them feel grown-up.In turn, feeling confident on a computer often translates to academic(学术的) confidence.Researchers have found that attitudes toward writing, for example, improve when students write on a computer.
Perhaps most importantly, computers can enrich family life.Forget the idea that computer kids are separated.Children like to use the computer with adults and other kids, asking questions and comparing results.“The Internet is a unique opportunity to bring resources home,”notes Susan Haugland,PhD,Cape Girardeau,Mo.,author of Computers and Young Children:A World of Discovery.
Although the benefits of computers are real, they have disadvantages, too.Kids can lose their way, wasting hours on mindless software or violent games.Just as parents have always helped children make good choices about everything from friends to food, books to TV,now we must make sure they get the best out of computers.

Internet use seems to cause a fall in psychological(心理的) health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less often, the two-year study showed. And it wasn’t that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually seemed to cause the bad feelings.
Researchers are puzzled over the results, which were completely opposite to what they had expected. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.
The fact that Internet use reduces time used for family and friends may be the reason for the drop in health, researchers said.Faceless, bodiless “virtual”(虚拟的) communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversations, and the relationships formed through it may not be so deep.Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.
“But_it’s_important_to_remember_this_is_not_about_the_technology;it’s_about_
how_it_is_used,” said one of the researchers.“It really points to the need for considering social factors(因素) when you design new inventions.”
6.The writer mainly wants to tell us that ________.
A.the Internet can bring people many advantages
B.the Internet use may cause psychological problems
C.the Internet users are not satisfied with their lives
D.we shouldn’t use the Internet

A.Because the results were completely different from what they had thought.
B.Because the Net proved socially healthier than television.
C.Because the Internet users were all healthier.
D.Because the Internet users experienced less depression and loneliness.
8.What may be the reasons why the Internet use causes a fall in psychological health?
A.Internet use reduces time used for family and friends.
B.Virtual communication is less psychologically satisfying than actual conversations.
C.Exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.
D.All of the above.
9.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?

B.The two-year study showed that using the Net seemed to cause the bad feelings.

Visiting the Moon
During his term in office,President Kennedy gave full funding to NASA—the space agency. He did this because he wanted to see Americans land on the moon.In July 1969 three men fulfilled Kennedy’s dream during the Apollo 11 mission.Thousands of people had worked for years in order to send them to the moon. There had been 10 prior Apollo missions. One had failed, but the others were successful. Finally it was time to try a moon landing.
Their spacecraft took off from NASA in Houston,Texas.A Saturn 5 rocket carried the astronauts and their spacecraft into orbit. They blasted through space at speeds as fast as 25,000 miles per hour(40,234 kph).Even at that incredible speed,it took four days to reach the moon. The men had a special craft designed only for landing on the moon. This lunar module was called The Eagle.
After The Eagle landed,Neil Armstrong stepped out onto the moon.People all over the world watched on their television sets as he said,“That’s one small step for man,one giant leap for mankind.”Buzz Aldrin followed Armstrong onto the moon’s surface, but Michael Collins stayed circling the moon in the main spacecraft. He had to make sure that nothing happened to the spacecraft that would take them home.
The astronauts moved around on the moon, gathering rocks and taking photographs. They did many experiments on the moon. Before they left, they planted an American flag in the ground in the place where they landed.Next to it they put a plaque that read,“We came in peace for all mankind.”The flag and the plaque are still there.
Some people think that moon travel may become common. They want to build hotels on the moon and have people go on lunar vacations! If that happens, people will visit the site of the first moon landing. They will stand where Neil Armstrong made history.

In the digital age of Facebook,Twitter and texting,it seems as if very few things are sacred (神圣的).People text in movie theaters,in class and even while driving. But one woman was caught texting in a really unusual place—her own wedding.
After making her way down the aisle (过道) with her father, the California bride stopped, pulled a cellphone out of the top of her dress and began to text under her veil. She used one hand to text as the other held her father’s hand.
“This is part of a wedding video I shot in August,2008 at the Mission Beach Women’s Club in San Diego,CA,”videographer James Costa wrote on his YouTube page.“It was perfectly normal except for this funny clip of the bride texting.”
“At one point,I noticed her doing it through my lens (镜头) and I had to pull away from the camera to make sure I was seeing what I thought I was seeing,”Costa wrote.
The preacher could be heard in the background beginning the ceremony. The bride’s back was to her guests, but Costa caught the moment with his camerA.“The preacher was busy reading his opening comments and the bride’s back was to the guests who were there,”Costa wrote.“I was the only one to see her.Her dad glanced at her and then saw me taking a video!”
The bride’s father appeared embarrassed and at one point opened his mouth and began to move his arm as though he was going to say something to her,but he stopped himself from doing so,and let the bride do—or text—whatever she wanted on her special day.

“Family” is of course an elastic word. But when British people say that their society is based on family life, they are thinking of “family” in its narrow, peculiarly European sense of mother, father and children living together alone in their own house as an economic and social unit. Thus, every British marriage indicates the beginning of a new and independent family—hence the tremendous importance of marriage in British life. For both the man and the woman, marriage means leaving one’s parents and starting one’s own life. The man’s first duty will then be to his wife, and the wife’s to her husband. He will be entirely responsible for her financial support, and she for the running of the new home.Their children will be their common responsibility.Neither the wife’s parents nor the husband’s,nor their brothers or sisters, aunts or uncles, have any right to interfere with them—they are their own masters.
Readers of novels like Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice will know that in former time marriage among wealthy families were arranged by the girl’s parents, that is,it was the parents’ duty to find a suitable husband for their daughter, preferably a rich one,and by skillful encouragement to lead him eventually to ask their permission to marry their daughter.Until that time, the girl was protected and maintained in the parents’ home, and the financial relief of getting rid of her could be seen in their giving the newly married pair a sum of money called a dowry (嫁妆).It is very different today. Most girls of today get a job when they leave school and become financially independent before their marriage. This has had two results.A girl chooses her own husband, and she gets no dowry.

Rebecca Bunting is excited about the weekend. She’s flying from London to Tallinn, where a little boy will be waiting to greet her at the airport.“It’s his fourth birthday,”she said, smiling.“I haven’t seen him for three months and I can’t wait to see how much he has grown.”
From the way she’s talking, you’d imagine Rebecca is going to visit a nephew or a friend’s child.Instead, this tall, attractive 28-year-old woman from London is going to spend a long weekend with her son, whom she left two years ago when she walked away from him and her husband.“He has a very good father and grandmother.I feel he’s better off living with them than with me,”she said calmly.“I want him to be with me,but I just can’t be sure that would work.”
Yet public attitude towards women like Rebecca, who have chosen to live away from their children,is that they are at some level irresponsible. In our society women who fail to put their children before themselves are seen as unnatural.Whispers follow,“What’s wrong with her?I would never do that.”
Sarah Hart is the co-chairperson of Match,a charity for mothers who don’t live with their children, and the author of A Mother Apart,a book for the 200,000 or so British women in this situation. She says that there is still a huge discrepancy in how we view mothers and fathers not living with their children.“We usually think that it’s very painful for men to be separated from their kids but that this is just how things work out.But when a woman does it,our judgment is unforgiving,”she says.“People usually think that she must have done something wrong and that in some way she must be unfit.”

A small piece of fish each day may keep the heart doctor away. That’s the finding of a study of Dutch men in which deaths from heart disease were more than 50 percent lower among those who consumed at least an ounce (盎司) of salt water fish per day compared to those who never ate fish.
The Dutch research is one of three human studies that give strong scientific support to the long held belief that eating fish can provide health benefits, particularly to the heart.
Heart disease is the number-one killer in the United States, with more than 550,000 deaths occurring from heart attacks each year. But previous research has shown that the level of heart disease is lower in cultures that consume more fish than Americans do.There are fewer heart disease deaths, for example, among the Eskimos of Greenland, who consume about 14 ounces of fish a day,and among the Japanese, whose daily fish consumption averages more than 3 ounces.
For 20 years, the Dutch study followed 852 middle-aged men,20 percent of whom ate no fish.
At the start of the study, average fish consumption was about two-thirds of an ounce each day, with more men eating lean_fish than fatty fish.
During the next two decades,78 of the men died from heart disease. The fewest deaths were among the group who regularly ate fish, even at levels far lower than those of the Japanese or Eskimos.This_relationship was true regardless of other factors such as age, high blood pressure,or blood cholesterol levels.
31.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.The Dutch research has proved that eating fish can help to prevent heart disease.
B.People who regularly eat fish never suffer from heart disease.
C.Heart disease causes more deaths in America than any other disease.

Dear Lan Lan,
I’m now writing to you at Hartsop,a village in the Lake District,a place to have most beautiful scenery in English.I come here to spend Christmas with an English couple. This was planned for overseas students to know British way of life by living with British families.
We came two days before Christmas and during our stay,we have had everything we expected.Christmas turkey,Christmas cake,Christmas puddings,Christmas parties and Christmas gifts under the Christmas tree. All are exciting and amusing, but above all these,we are deeply touched by the hospitality(好客)of the family,Roger and Anne Marie.
Anne Marie was a nurse and all these days, she had been busy cooking meals, washing dishes and showing us around.Roger, who was a doctor, knows a lot about China and still wants to know more.He plays us Chinese music and it seems to me he does better in that than we do.In the evenings,we all sit around the fireplace with Tim,a lovely dog,by our side.Like long-time-no-see friends,we talk about all the things that have happened or we hope to happen in our lives. There is always so much to tell and to know.
After three months away from home,we are again feeling how sweet a home can be.Roger and Anne Marrie are not like most of the other people we have met who always make us feel we are foreigners in a foreign country. They show such kindness to us that they bring us a person-to-person feeling, instead of a British-to-Chinese feeling. They make us believe that though there are differences of languages and cultures, one may always expect to find in every corner of the world the feeling of love and being loved.
How I wish Mum and Dad could meet them! How I wish you were here with me! How strange it is that the more I feel at home here, the more I miss my real home and all of you.We always talk about “when we go back home next year...” and soon we will turn this into “when we go back home THIS year...” for the New Year’s Day is coming.Miss you.
Love,
Cao Wen

During the Middle Ages, kings and noblemen built castles for defense. The lord and his family and their servants lived in the castle. The lord owned the land around the castle, and it was farmed by peasants. In return, the peasants had small plots of land. The peasants didn’t get paid, but they raised their own food on their plots of land. The lord also protected the peasants from danger.
Carpenters made the first castles out of wood, but that didn’t work well.Stone made better, stronger castles, but it was much more expensive.Brave workers had to use high scaffolding(脚手架) to build those walls.Sometimes, the walls were 115 feet tall!
Castles changed over many years.Later castles had double walls that were called curtain walls. If the castle was attacked, the attackers had to break through two walls.Usually, the inner wall was higher than the outer one.During an attack, the drawbridge into the castle was raised. The walls had long narrow openings in them so that soldiers could fire arrows through the holes safely.
A large castle took many years to build.A whole army of builders carried out the project under the direction of a master worker.Workers cut and shaped the huge stones. They used mallets(木槌) and chisels(凿子) so the stones fit together well, and they used mortar(灰泥) to stick the stones together. The walls were built with a double row of stone bricks. The workers packed these walls with rubble(粗石),which the peasants helped dig and carry.

Patience Is the Secret of Success
The story is about an unforgettable lesson of the writer from an old man while fishing, through which the writer realized patience was very important and that it was the secret of success.
I have a similar experience.Once I waited for the bus at the stop for 30 minutes, but no bus came.I couldn’t wait any longer and decided to walk to school. But no sooner had I left than the bus arrived.I thought if I had waited for one more minute,I would have caught it.If I wanted to take the next bus,I would have to wait for another 30 minutes.Only then did I realize the importance of patience.Being impatient will waste all the efforts that we have made.Patience also plays an important part in our study and work. With it we can achieve greater success.
Now,whenever I am to lose my patience,I’ll think of the experience of waiting for a bus.
