SEOUL (AFP)—One of South Korea’s most historic landmarks(历史地标),the Namdaemun gate in the heart of the capital Seoul, collapsed early Monday after a fire suspected to have caused by arson(纵火),police said.
The beautiful ancient two-storey wood building atop(在……的顶上) the six-century-old stone gate, the city’s oldest wooden structure, caught fire last Sunday evening.
Eighty firefighters battling the fire believed it was under control but it burnt up again.
The gate, the number one National Treasure and a major tourist attraction, was first constructed in 1398.It was rebuilt in 1447 and has since been frequently renovated(翻修).
Police are still trying to find the cause of the fire but believe it was arson(纵火),Yonhap news agency said.
A taxi driver who reported the fire told investigators he saw a man aged in his 50s climb the stairs to the gate shortly before the fire started.
The landmark, officially named Sungnyemun of “Gate of exalted ceremonies,” was the southern gate in the walls that surrounded Seoul during the Chosun Dynasty of 1392-1910.
It is close to Namdaemun market,a centuries-old market popular with locals and tourists alike.
The fire comes less than three years after fire destroyed one of the country’s oldest Buddhist temples,Naksan Temple, along with its bronze bell.

Protect the cultural relics
It’s reported in the news that one of South Korea’s most important cultural relics, the Namdaemun gate, caught fire last Sunday evening and collapsed early the next morning.
This tragedy reminds us of many cultural relics that have been damaged. And the causes of the damage are various. Some of the cultural relics are stolen. Some lack appropriate repair and restoration. Some undergo disasters like fires or floods. What’s worse, some are even intentionally destroyed by men.
Cultural relics are a great heritage from our ancestors. What’s more, they symbolize our culture and our country. Therefore,it’s high time that we protected them.Effective measures should be taken. For example,we should raise the fund to repair and restore the cultural relics. In addition,we should pass some laws and use regulations as a powerful tool to protect them.Under no circumstances shall we ignore any damage to the cultural relics.

Young adult film-makers all hope to show their works in international festivals like Sundance and Toronto. But what about really young film-makers who aren’t in film school yet and aren’t,strictly speaking, even adults?
They are at the heart of Wingspan Arts Kids Film Festival, tomorrow,in a setting any director might envy:Lincoln Centre.Complete with “red carpet” interviews and various awards, the festival has much in common with events for more experienced movie-makers,except for the age of the participants:about 8 to 18.
“What’s really exciting is that it’s film for kids by kids,” said Cori Gardner, managing director of Wingspan Arts,a nonprofit organization offering youth arts programs in the New York area. This year the festival will include films not only from Wingspan but also from other city organizations and one from a middle school in Arlington,Virginia.“We want to make this a national event,” Ms.Gardner added.
The nine shorts to be shown range from a Claymation biography of B.B.King to a science fiction adventure set in the year 3005.“A lot of the material is really mature,” Ms.Gardner said, talking about films by the New York City branch of Global Action Project,a media arts and leadership-training group.“The Choice is about the history of a family and Master Anti-Smoker is about the dangers of second-hand smoke.Dream of the Invisibles describes young immigrants’ feelings of both belonging and not belonging in their adopted country.”
The festival will end with an open reception at which other films will be shown. These include a music video and a full-length film whose title is Pressures.

To me,life without music would not be exciting.I realize that this is not true for everybody. Many people get along quite well without going to the concert,or listening to the record. But music plays an important part in everyone’s life, whether he realizes it or not.Try to imagine, for example, what films or TV plays would be like without music.Would the feelings, the moving plots and the greatest interests,be so exciting or dramatic?I’m not sure about it.
Now we have been speaking of music in its more common meaning—the kind of music we hear in the concert hall;we discover them in our everyday life too—in the rhythm of the sea,the melody of a bird in the woods and so on.So music surely has meaning for everyone,in some way or other. And,of course,it has special meaning for those who have spent all their lives working on playing or writing music.
It is well said,“Through music a child enters a world of beauty, expresses himself from his heart, feels the joy of doing things alone, learns to take care of others, develops his mind and makes his body strong.”
6.What does the writer say more about in the text?
A.Life full of music.
B.Life without music.
C.The importance of music.
D.The development of music.
7.From the text,we learn that many people ________.
A.don’t realize the importance of music
B.get along quite well without music
C.go to the concert instead of enjoying music
D.think music would be less exciting than films
8.What does the underlined word “melody” in the second paragraph mean in the text?
A.Flying. B.Looking.
C.Singing. D.Living.
9.From the last paragraph,we learn that music ________.
A.is very important,especially for children
B.is very necessary for our everyday life
C.can make our life exciting and dramatic
D.can enter into another beautiful world
10.What’s the meaning for those who work on playing or writing music?
A.They treat music as their life.

Most fitness advice is given to a general audience. But if you’re old,the International Council on Active Aging (ICAA) has some suggestions for you to get started and keep you at the top of your game:
Get a check-up.Talk with your doctor about getting permission to begin a fitness program and making any correction to suit your situation.
Know your choices. Before starting, choose a program you’ll enjoy,so you’ll do it regularly. Some people, for example, like to go to a gym for carefully organized workouts (锻炼),while others might prefer a more informal neighborhood walking club.
Check out the facility and the staff. Is the place friendly? Can you change clothes comfortably? Are facilities easily used?
Choose the style you want to take part in.Choose what’s best for you—a class or going alone?Morning or night hours?Indoor or outside exercise?
Start slowly. Most people are too excited and sometimes overdo it.Record a baseline (起点) of your regular activities and determine a reasonable schedule.
Make a date.Find a partner to exercise with you and he or she can encourage you.
Set specific short-and-long-term goals.Plan for activity in your day and pay enough attention to the plan.
Make a list.Try to list the advantages you have had (such as less stress, stronger bones or greater strength and a better sleep),rather than just the result (such as weight).
Remind yourself what your goals are.If it hurts, don’t do it.Learn to work around pain, not through it.And once you’ve reached your goal, treat yourself for the good job you’ve done,so it will encourage you to continue.

As we get older, our social circles and our tastes in music become fixed. Not that there’s anything wrong with the music you grew up on,but after you’ve recycled it for 10 years,it starts to sound boring.
Ignore the terror from the music industry;this is a great time to discover new music.Fans and artists have never had such a direct dialogue. That means that the average fans can keep up with the latest trends in the music industry. All you have to do is look.
Go outside your comfort zone
Think back to when you were younger and music was almost as important as the air you breathed.Got it?Good. If you’re really out of touch, start with Toss MTV or any TV station that plays new music on in the background. Some of it you won’t like, but at some point, you’ll hear something you do.
If that’s not your bag, pick up the habit of listening to traditional radio that plays new music, such as the Top 40,college stations and the BBC.You can branch out from there.Another choice is to go to Billboard.com or ChartAttack.com to see what’s in and you’ll see what you’ve been missing.
Develop an interest
It’s as simple as asking a few questions.Ask a kid or a teenager:Where do they get their music? What do they like?If the name of anyone who has starred in a reality TV show comes out of their mouth, move on.
If you hear something you like when you’re back from after work one day, don’t just let the opportunity pass.Find out who and what you’re listening to.Just ask the bar waiter.

A.Because you repeat it for ages.
B.Because our social circles stop expanding.

The Oscars,or to give them their proper name,“The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards of Merit”,are awards given to people who work in specific areas of the film industry.
Actors and directors, costume designers and songwriters,make-up artists and sound engineers, among others, all have the chance to win an Oscar.
The awards themselves are small statuettes(小雕像),around 34cm tall and weighing just over 3.5kg.The golden statuettes are all the same—they show a man (with no clothes on!) holding a sword and standing on a reel of film.
Sadly for the winner, the statue is not solid gold, but just gold plated. In actual value it is only worth around $250.However,although the statuette itself is not worth very much, winning one can be worth millions of dollars to the film studios.
Winning an Oscar means that the world top film-makers like your work.It is the best publicity any film can get.If a film can have Academy Award Winner under its title, many more people will go to see it.
The Academy was first formed in May 1927,and the awards have been given every year since then. This ceremony, when the awards are presented to the winners,is the highlight of the Hollywood calendar. It is the most glamorous(富有魅力的) and star-studded(星光灿烂的) evening of the whole year, and is shown on television in 90 countries around the world and watched by over 500 million people.
Everyone who is famous in the film world attends the awards ceremony. Most arrive in huge limousines (豪华轿车),wearing wonderful clothes. The Oscar ceremony is the one night when Hollywood really is as glamorous as it appears.
For the first few years of the Academy, the Academy Awards themselves were simply called “The Statuettes”.There are various stories which explain why they were at last given the nickname Oscars. The most popular is that the Academy librarian,Margaret Herrick, exclaimed when she saw the golden statuette,“He looks just like my Uncle Oscar!” and the name stuck.
Whatever the reason,it is certainly easier to say Oscar, than to say “Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Awards of Merit”,so the little golden man is now on a first name basis with everyone.

Many studies have been conducted to find the deeper benefits of listening to and playing music. The growing field of music treatment is presenting increasing amounts of evidence that point toward the greater powers of music.
Emotional benefits
The right song can put anybody in a better mood. Most people turn to certain songs to improve their moods. The main reason behind it is that music has the ability to express our feelings better than any other medium. In addition,we have favourite songs for particular situations because we tune into the melodies (悦耳的音调) that catch our nerves the best.
Music and exercise
Have you ever noticed how out of breath you get when listening to an exciting song while doing exercise at the gym?It has been suggested that stimulating (刺激的) music can actually increase muscle tension, while sedative (镇定的) music decreases it.
It has also been proved that music can improve motor skills. An experiment conducted on a group of elementary students proved that children learning basic motor skills such as throwing, catching and jumping while listening to music did better than those with no music.
Chronic (慢性的) pain relief
Music has the ability to ease the sense of chronic pain.In fact, according to a paper in the Journal of Advanced Nursing, music can reduce chronic pain by 21%.The paper reports that 60 patients in an experiment were divided into two groups—music and no music. The results showed that people who listened to music for an hour each day for a week had improved physical and psychological diseases compared to those who did not.

According to the passage,China won worldwide praise for its efforts at the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen as well as its efforts in fighting climate change.
While seeking economic development,China has been paying special attention to reducing carbon emission and protecting the environment. It encourages the development of science and technology and makes use of green energy actively.
It goes without saying that it’s everyone’s duty to protect the environment and fight climate change. So we all should try to live a low-carbon life. That is to say,we should do as follows:take more buses but less taxis;turn off the lights before leaving the classroom;turn off water after each use;not leave water running while brushing teeth;turn on air-conditioners only when they’re necessary, not use disposable chopsticks or cups, and so on.
Only by making joint efforts, can we make our world a better place to live.
