Faced with less and less population and workforce, Japan has been increasingly turning to robot for help. Over the years, the robot have been used to perform a large number of human tasks including building products and providing care and friendship for the elderly The latest member to the Japanese“workforce”may be Model-T. This seven-foot-tall robot is now tested for restocking (补充) sandwiches, drinks, and ready meals on shelves at select locations of local convenience stores like Lawson and FamilyMart.
Model-T, whose face is similar to a kangaroo (袋鼠), is certainly not the first restocking robot. However, the robots now being used by companies, like Walmart and Amazon, are only able to accomplish single, repetitive tasks, such as moving boxes. Model -T, on the other hand, has a wide range of movement and can be used to restock objects of different sizes, making it ideal for convenience stores, which sell sorts of items.
Model-T's easy-to-use controls require little training and can be operated(操作)from a faraway location, During the August 2020 test at a Tokyo FamilyMart store, the robot was directed by a VR terminal (终端) located at an office about five miles away. Tomohiro Kano, a general manager at FamilyMart, believes this advantage will enable the FamilyMart to find staff who would typically not work in storen,“There are about 1.6 million people in Japan who, for many reasons, are not active in the workforce," Kano told Japan Times.
Though Model -T appears to pass the tests easily, it is not quite ready to enter the workforce. Besides being a lot slower than human stockers, it is also only able to lift packaged(包装好的)items，and cannot hold unpackaged items such as fruit and vegetables, Telexistence, the company behind Model-T, is working to improve the disadvantages and hopes to introduce a faster, more perfect Model-T within the next two years. The company believes that the robots could also be useful in hospitals, allowing doctors to perform surgeries (外科手术) from faraway locations.
