Brighton
Brighton, a famous holiday town next to the sea in Sussex, on the southeast coast of England, is only 50 minutes on a fast train from London.
The town usually has a population of 134 000 people, but in the summer this number increases a lot as Brighton gets a lot of tourists. They come here to spend their holidays by the sea and students come from lots of different countries. It is a very busy place at this time of the year, and there always seems to be a party going on!
A long time ago Brighton was a quiet fishing town. It even had a different name, Brighthelmstone. Later on, when swimming in the sea became popular, many rich and important people, as well as artists, musicians and writers began to arrive and Brighton became a popular seaside holiday town. Prince George, the future King George IV, first visited Brighton in 1783. He liked it and used to spend part of the summer there because of his health. He asked John Nash, who was a very famous builder at the time, to build him a pal-ace. It took about 40 years to build the palace and it cost half a million pounds! Many famous and important people enjoyed visiting Brighton over the years. Now more than 400 000 tourists visit Brighton and the palace - the Royal Pavilion - every year.
The Royal Pavilion, with its beautiful rooms and museum, is not the only interesting thing in Brighton. In May this friendly and colourful town holds an international festival with many different kinds of music, dance, and theatre.

When he was a teenager, Hunter Adams was very unhappy, and he spent many years in the 1960s and 1970s in a special hospital for people with mental health problems.
When he left hospital, Adams decided to become a doctor, so he went to a medical school in Virginia, America. But when he was there, he did things in different ways. For example, he didn't like the doctors' white coats, so he wore shirts with flowers on them when he visited his patients, and he tried to make them laugh. The doctors at the medical school didn't like Adams very much because he was too different.
Adams believed that people in hospital need more than just medicine. He saw unhappy and lonely people, and he tried to help them, not just as patients, but as people too. He spent a lot of time with children in hospital, and often put a special red nose on his face so he looked like a clown and made the children laugh.
When he finished medical school and became a doctor, Adams opened his own hospital, called The Gesundheit Institute, with some other doctors. They wanted it to be a place with a different way of working with sick people.
Hunter Adams became famous during the 1980s, and in 1998, Universal Pictures made a film about his life. It was very successful. In the film, Robin Williams played Adams.
Williams said, "Hunter is a really warm person, who believes that patients need a doctor who's a friend. I enjoyed playing him

I was shopping in the supermarket when I heard the young voice.
"Mum, come here! There's this lady here my size!"
The mother rushed to her son; then she turned to me to say "sorry" I smiled and told her: "It's okay. " Then I talked to the boy,
"Hi, I'm Darryl Kramer.How are you "
He studied me from head to toe, and asked; "Are you a little mommy " "Yes, I have a son," I answered.
"Why are you so little " he asked.
"It's the way I was born," I said, "Some people are little. Some are tall. I'm just not going to grow any bigger." After I answered his other questions, I shook the boy's hand, and left.
My life as a little person is filled with stories like that. I enjoy talking to children and explaining why I look different from their parents. I stand 114 cm tall. I was born an achondroplasia dwarf(侏儒)。Despite this, I did all the things other kids did when I was growing up.
I didn't realize how short I was until I started school. Some kids picked on me, calling me names(辱骂我). Then I knew I began to hate the first day of school each year. New students would always look fixedly at me as I tried hard to climb the school bus stairs.
But I learned to smile and accept the fact that I was going to be noticed in my whole life.I decided to make my uniqueness(与众不同)an advantage rather than a disadvantage. What I lacked (缺少) in height, I made up for in personality.
I'm 47 now, and people are surprised when they see me driving. I try to keep a good attitude. When people are not polite enough, I say to myself; "Look what else I have - a great family, nice friends."
It's the children's questions that make my life special. I enjoy answering their questions. My hope is that, I will encourage them to accept the persons around them, whatever size and shape they come in, and treat them in a friendly way.

Today is the Earth Day. Our reporter Nick Ford interviewed several people in the street.This is what they told him;
9:24 Miss Mayfield, a young teacher
I try to tell my students the importance of our relations with wild animals. I take them to zoos and forests, and I avoid using materials that come from wild animals, for example, ivory, which comes from elephants. I don't wear things made of fur, and I even avoid buying leather shoes. Wool is okay, though - the sheep don't get hurt!
10:03 Mr. Perdue, a businessman
I don't use my ear for short journeys. I walk or go by bike. It's good for my health, and it doesn't pollute the air.
10:30 Tom Pitt, a 14-year-old student
I only buy writing paper and notebooks made from recycled paper. And when I buy something made of wood, like a wooden table, I'll make sure that the wood comes from a forest where they plant new trees.
11:01 Mr. White, an artist
I'm an artist, and I enjoy recycled art. They are things made out of rubbish - like this model plane made from old containers. In fact, I hate throwing things away. I even keep my old woolen clothes and cotton handkerchiefs and use them for cleaning.
11:35 Ms. Nelson, a policeman
I'm careful not to waste electricity. For example, I always turn the lights off when I leave a room. And I don't have the TV on when I'm not watching it.
12:00 Mr. Parks, a doctor
1 take my empty bottles, jars, and anything else made of glass to the recycling center every week. I try not to buy plastic bottles because you can't recycle most kinds of plastic.

Many 15-year-olds don't know what they want to be when they grow up. Abby Harris knows she wants to become an astronaut and isn't letting anything stop her.
According to Harris' Internet blog, Astronaut Abby, she has wanted to be the first astronaut to walk on Mars since she was 5 years old.
Harris wrote that at the beginning, most people didn't take her dream seriously. But she stuck with it.
"I made plans, I worked hard and I focused on my goal. As I got older and continued to stay focused on science, people in my
life began to notice and encouraged me to dream big,"she wrote.
In the 7th grade, Harris was doing a project on the International Space Station. She set up a Twitter account (账户) to get in touch with NASA. But soon she found that it was also a great place for her to write about her dreams and talk with others who are interested in space. Her friends on Twitter then helped her create her website and blog, Astronaut Abby.
What's more, Harris has a real astronaut as her mentor(导师).Several years ago,Harris ran into Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano at an airport. They talked for an hour and Parmitano agreed to become her mentor. Now Parmitano is in the International Space Station.Harris e-mails him every day to learn about his experiences.
It's not easy to become an astronaut, but Harris is confident in herself.
"If you work really hard at something, it can happen. And it will happen." she said.
