When I told my father that I was moving to Des Moines, Iowa, he told me about the only time he had been there. It was in the 1930s, when he was an editor(编辑)of the literary magazine of Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas, Texas. He also worked as a professor at SMU, and there was a girl student in his class who suffered from a serious backdisease. She couldn't afford the operation because her family was poor.
Her mother ran a boardinghouse in Galveston, a seaside town near Houston, Texas. She was cleaning out the attic(阁楼)one day when she came across an old dusty manuscript (手稿).On its top page were the words, “By 0. Henry”. It was a nice story, and she sent it to her daughter at SMU, who showed it to my father. My father had never read the story before, but it sounded like O. Henry, and he knew that O. Henry had once lived in Houston. So it was possible that the famous author had gone to the beach and stayed in the Gainestown boarding-house, and had written the story there and left the manuscript behind by accident. My father visited an 0. Henry expert at Columbia University in New York, who authenticated(证明…是真的)the story as 0. Henry's.
My father then set out to sell it. Eventfully, he found himself in Des Moines, meeting with Gardner Cowles, a top editor at The Des Moines Register. Cowles loves the story and bought it on the spot. My father took the money to the girl. It was just enough for her to have the operation she so desperately needed.
My father never told me what the O. Henry story was about. But I doubt that it could have been better than his own story.

A schoolgirl saved her father's life by kicking him in the chest (胸)after he suffered a serious allergic(过敏的)reaction which stopped his heart.
Izzy, nine, restarted father Colm's heart by stamping (踩)on his chest after he fell down at home and stopped breathing.
Izzy's mother, Debbie, immediately called 999 but Izzy knew doctors would never arrive in time to save her father, so decided to use CPR.
However, she quickly discovered her arms weren't strong enough, so she stamped on her father's chest instead.
Debbie then took over with some more conventional chest compressions(按压) until the ambulance(救护车)arrived.
Izzy, who has been given a bravery award (奖励)by her school, said, “I just kicked him really hard. My mum taught me CPR but I knew I wasn't strong enough to use hands. I was quite scared. The doctor said I might as well be a doctor or a nurse. My mum said that Dad was going to hospital with a big footprint on his chest. "
"She's a little star," said Debbie, "I was really upset but Izzy just took over. I just can't believe what she did. I really think all children should be taught first aid. Izzy did CPR then the doctor turned up. Colm had to have more treatment on the way to the hospital and we've got to see an expert.
Truck driver Clom, 35, suffered a mystery allergic reaction on Saturday and was taken to hospital, but was sent home only for it to happen again the next day. The second attack was so serious that his airway swelled(气管肿大),preventing him from breathing, his blood pressure dropped suddenly, and his heart stopped for a moment.
He has now made a full recovery from his suffering.

The Boy Made It!
One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a ferce(猛烈的)snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water, a phone, or other supplies (用品).He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all the survival(生存)shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter (躲避处)from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him. Using skis. Nicholas built a snow cave (洞).He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug our a hole in Th middle. Then he piled branches (树枝) om top of himself, lite a blanker, lo stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only things he could — he huddled(裝缩)in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks (足迹) and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man us. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode (一期节目) of Man us. Wild, Grylls is abandoned (抛弃) in a wild area and has to find his way out. When Grylls heard about Nicholas' amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

A world-famous Canadian author, Margaret Atwood, has created the world's first longdistance singing device (签字装置),the LongPen.
After many tiring book-signing tours from city to city, Atwood thought there must be a better way to do them. She hired some technical experts and started her own company in 2004.Together they designed the LongPen. Here's how it works: The author writes a personal message and signature on a computer tablet (手写板) using a special pen. On the receiving end, in another city, a robotic arm fitted with a regular pen signs the book. The author and fan can talk with each other via webcams (网络摄像机)and computer screens.
Work on the LongPen began in Atwood' basement(地下室)。 At first, they had no idea it would be as hard as it turned out to be. The device went through several versions, including one that actually had smoke coming out of it. The inventing finally completed, test runs were made in Ottawa, and the LongPen was officially launched at the 2006 London Book Fair. From here, Atwood did two long-distance book signings of her latest book for fans in Toronto and New York City.
The LongPen produces a unique(独一无二的)signature each time because it copies themovement of the author in real time. It has several other potential applications( 潜在的应用).It could increase credit card security and allow people to sign contracts from another place. The video exchange between signer and receiver can be recorded on DVD for proof when legal papers are used.
"It's really fun," said the owner of a bookstore, who was present for one of the test runs,"Obviously you can't shake hands with the author but there are chances for a connection that you don't get from a regular book signing."
The response to the invention has not been all favourable. Atwood has received criticism(批评)from authors who think she is trying to end book tours. But she said, “It will be possible to go to places that you never got sent to before because the publishers couldn't afford it."
