When Jack Prelutsky was a kid, he didn’t know he would grow up to write poetry for children. Neither of his parents read poetry to him when he was little. When his fourth-grade teacher read poems in class, he thought they seemed boring. To nine- year-old Prelutsky, poetry was a punishment.
Prelutsky had always taken voice and piano lessons, but when he attended New York’s High School of Music and Art, his love for music grew deeper. “I liked the way songs said what they had to say-the simple, direct and ordinary language they employed. I really think that’s what made me see poetry in a new light.”
Then Prelutsky took a drawing class in his early twenties and found he wasn’t very good at life drawing. But he was good at drawing imaginary animals.
In six months, Prelutsky drew a lot of imaginary animals with the strange character. He loved each one, but felt something was missing. “Then one evening, I looked at them and said’ They need poems’. Although I didn’t know why I thought of it, within half an hour, I had all the poems written,” said Prelutsky.
Publishing the poems never crossed Prelutsky’s mind in those early days. But when friends fell in love with his poems, he agreed to share them with a children’s book editor.
“She didn’t think much of my illustrations (插图), ”he said, “but she told me that I was a natural poet and encouraged me to keep writing.”
At the time, Prelutsky was surprised at the editor’s encouragement. But more than forty books later, he can still make friends and fans laugh. From monsters (怪物) to frogs, Prelutsky has turned animals into an art form.

Gwendolyn Brooks was the first African American to win a Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. Gwendolyn Brooks wrote hundreds of poems during her lifetime. She was known around the world for using poetry to increase understanding about black culture in America.
Her poems described conditions in the black community. She also wrote poems about the struggles of black women. But her skill was more than her ability to write about struggling black people. She was an expert at the language of poetry. She combined traditional European poetry styles with the African American experience.
In her early poetry, Gwendolyn Brooks wrote about the South Side of Chicago, where many black people live. In her poems, the South Side is called Bronzeville. It was A Street in Bronzeville that gained the attention of literary experts in 1945. Critics praised her poetic skill and her powerful descriptions of the black experience during the time. The Bronzeville poems were her first published collection.
In 1950, Gwendolyn Brooks won the Pulitzer Prize for her second book of poems called Annie Allen. Annie Allen is a collection of poetry about the life of a Bronzeville girl as a daughter, a wife and a mother. She experiences loneliness, loss, death and being poor. Ms Brooks said that winning the prize changed her life.
Her next work was a novel written in 1953 called Maud Martha, which received little notice when it was first published. But now it is considered an important work by some critics. Its main ideas about the difficult life of many women are popular among female writers today.
In some of her poems Gwendolyn Brooks described what people see in life is affected by who they are. One example is this poem, Corners on the Curving Sky.
By the end of the 1960s, Gwendolyn Brooks’ poetry expanded from the everyday experiences of people in Bronzeville. She wrote about a wider world and dealt with important political issues.

If you’ve ever wondered what the process of becoming an astronaut is like, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex (KSCVC) now provides an experience that puts visitors in the shoes of a space explorer in training.
The center’s Astronaut Training Experience, or ATX for short, includes four simulations (模拟), one of which involves microgravity simulation and virtual reality (VR). They all require teamwork and good communication.
Dee Maynard, manager of education programs at KSCVC, said the experience was designed to keep visitors involved the whole time. “When we were designing this, one of our primary concerns was that we wanted people to have an experience instead of waiting around.” Maynard said. “Also, astronaut training is a team effort.
Although astronauts go through thousands of hours of training before taking off for space, this training does include some parts that are similar to those of real NASA training. One simulation helps visitors learn what it takes to launch NASA’s Space Launch System rocket. Six people step into the role of controlling the launch and communicate with six others in the Orion capsule.
Visitors take turns reading and passing instructions and sets of data from both sides. In mission control (航天地面指挥中) they can step into roles including the flight director and spacecraft systems officer. Inside the capsule, people try their hand at such jobs as the flight engineer and commander. If there’s a breakdown in communication, the mission could fail.
Across the room, there are chairs that are similar to the kind of zero gravity chair. With the press of a switch, the chairs fly across a special floor, giving astronauts-in-training an experience that somewhat simulates the zero gravity environment of space. This part of the experience also offers visitors a chance to learn about the management of space by explaining how to sleep, use the toilet and work in space.
Two simulations help visitors experience what life on Mars might look like.
8. What are the requirements of the Astronaut Training Experience
① Working together.
② Reading skills.
③ Analysing data.
④ Communication skills.
A. ①③
B. ①④
C. ②③
D. ②④

C. The simulation of landing on Mars.
D. Working as the flight engineer and commander.
11.What would be the best title of the passage
A. Make Yourself a Great Astronaut
B. Experience Life as an Astronaut

A night at the movie theatre is always a good idea. But when you leave the theatre and realise you just dropped 45 on a ticket and some snacks, you’ll wish you had been patient enough to wait until the movie came out on Netflix (网飞,在线影片租赁提供商). The average movie ticket price in the United States in 2000 was $5.39; now, a ticket is over $9.
The main reason why movie tickets have got so expensive is inflation (通货膨胀). It was actually more expensive to go to the movies in the 1970s than it is now. A ticket in 1978 cost $2.34. If you plug that into an inflation calculator, the same ticket would cost you $9.46 today. According to the National Association of Theatre Owners, the average cost for a ticket today is $9.11.
Another reason you need to dip into your life savings to see a movie on the big screen is that theatres are competing with streaming services that produce their own films, such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. And let’s be honest, sitting at home on your couch or in your bed is more comfortable than sitting in a cold theatre.
Because of streaming technology, movie theatres have to do something to bring in customers. Attractions-including alcohol, reclining seats (躺椅), surround sound, and 3D movies are all examples of those. And those upgrades come at a price, leading to more expensive tickets.
“There’s all that extra cost, and it’s really important for theatre owners and companies to make that experience as enjoyable as possible,” Patrick Corcoran, vice president of the National Association of Theatre Owners told Marketplace. “Because you’re offering a superb experience-audience expectations are for the latest and greatest technology, audiences are willing to pay more for a particular experience.
12. According to the passage, what makes movie tickets so expensive
A. The viewers are wealthier than before.
B. The movie theatres offer popcorn and alcohol for free.
C. Inflation has made the ticket price appear higher than before.
D. The popular movies with famous stars deserve the high price.
13. What can we learn from the passage
A. Netflix is always a better choice for movie viewers than theatres.
B. Comfortable seats ensure movie theatres a distinct advantage over streaming services.
C. The viewers actually pay for the updates of the movie theatres via more expensive tickets.
D. The theatre owners and companies update the theatres to win good fame.
14. Which of the following would Patrick Corcoran most probably agree with
A. It’s unwise for viewers to pay so much to watch a movie in the theatre.
B. The high price of a movie ticket is supposed to be in line with a wonderful experience.
C. It’s a waste of money to provide the latest technology in the theatre.
D. The viewers would prefer to sit at home on the couches or in the beds.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Behind the Increasing Price of Movie Tickets
B. Technological Improvement on Movie Theatres
C. The Competition Between Movie Theatres and Streaming Services
D. How to Save the Viewers’ Wallets

I was a single mother of four children, working at a low-paid job. Money was always tight, but we had a roof over our heads, food on the table, and clothes on our backs. I always told myself to be brave and strong, just for my four children. I hoped all my efforts would be worthwhile, as long as my children could grow up healthily. Every New Year’s Day we drove downtown to enjoy a special dinner, but the big excitement for the kids was the fun of shopping at the mall. This was a tradition of my family, so they all looked forward to the coming of the day. They talked and planned for weeks ahead of time, asking each other what they wanted for New Year’s Day.
The big day arrived and we started out early. I gave each of the four kids a twenty-dollar bill and asked them to search for gifts. Then everyone scattered (散开) with the bill. I sat at a table in a cafe waiting for my children and enjoying an instant of silence. It must be a happy day.
Back in the car driving home, everyone was excited about the day, laughing and asking each other about what they had bought. I noticed Ginger, my younger daughter had only one small and flat bag with her. I could see enough through the plastic bag to tell that she had bought candy bars-fifty-cent candy bars! What did she do with that twenty-dollar bill I had given her I was angry. After getting home, I called her into my bedroom and closed the door. I couldn’t hold back my anger and shouted at her, “What about the rest of the money No one would be convinced all these candies are worth 20 dollars. What did you do with the rest of the money ”

It is your money. Whatever you do, I should be supportive. Forgive me!” She said nothing and just smiled at me. I had never felt so rich as I did that day.
