At the age of eight, Glenn Cunningham was severely injured in a fire. He had major burns over the lower half of his body and was taken to a nearby county hospital.
From his bed, the semi-conscious(半昏迷的)little boy heard the doctor talking to his mother. The doctor told his mother that he would surely die—which was for the best, really—for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body.
But somehow, to the amazement of the physician, he did survive. The mother was told that her son was bound to spend his lifetime in a wheelchair.
But this brave little boy was determined that he would walk and even run. But unfortunately, from the waist down, Glenn had no motor ability. His thin, scarred legs just hung there, all but lifeless. Yet his courage that he would walk was as strong as ever.
One sunny day his mother wheeled him out into the yard to get some fresh air. This day, instead of sitting there he threw himself from the chair. Glenn worked his way to the fence, dragging(缓慢移动)his legs behind him. Then, step by step, he began dragging himself along the fence, determined that he would walk. He started to do this every day until eventually he did develop the ability first to stand up, then to walk with help, then to walk by himself—and then amazingly—to run. Glenn began to run to school. He ran everywhere as fast as he could. Later received the nickname(绰号)“the Kansas Flyer.”
1938 witnessed this young mans another amazing achievement. This young man, who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, and who could never hope to run, ran a mile in 4 minutes and 4.4 seconds the world’s fastest indoor mile! His perseverance paid off.

Justin and his younger sister, Lily, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks.
One day, Justin took Lily’s shoes to a shoe repairman to have them fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Lily agreed and the two decided to share Justin’s running shoes. Lily’s school hours were in the morning.so she would wear them first. After school she would rush back and give them to Justin. He could then run to his school which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could. Justin often arrived late and was warned by the school.
A long distance race was going to be held for the boys in the city. When Justin learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of the race arrived. Justin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted, he thought only of Lily and his promise to her.
The doctor told his mother that he would surely die可知医生认为 Glenn不可能活下来,故D项正确。
He ran everywhere as fast as he could.和 Later in college,Glenn joined the track team说明他利用一切可能的机会练习跑步并最终有资格加入大学田径队,故可推测他那时跑得已经很快并由此得到“the Kansas Flyer”的绰号,故选择C项。
由最后一段第二句中的 ran a mile in 4 minutes and 4.4 seconds,the world’s fastest indoor mile可知他创造了世界最快室内一英里的新纪录,故选择D项。
【高频词汇】1. to the amazement of令……
This young man, who was not expected to survive who would surely never walk, and who could never hope to run, ran a mile in 4 minutes and 4.4 seconds the world’s fastest indoor mile!
This young man ran a mile in 4 minutes and 4.4 seconds the world’s fastest indoor mile,是主谓宾结构,其中 the world’s fastest indoor mile是同位语。who was not expected to survive who would surely never walk who could never hope to run是三个并列的定语从句,修饰先行词This young man。
In the ups and downs of life是介词短语,意为“在人生的起伏波折中”,与空后的 you need a guiding force to keep you moving toward your goals逻辑关系匹配,故E项正确。
G项 If you lose hope(如果你失去希望),与空后的 you lose everything逻辑关系匹配,故G项正确。
At that time hope comes to your rescue and gives you encouragement. You try one more time and succeed语意顺承,故D项正确。
Is hope necessary for life与空后句Yes,hope gives meaning to life as without hope there is no reason to live逻辑吻合,故F项正确。
II. One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Justin looked up and he saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this crucial point, Justin clenched his teeth jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. Finally, he was the fourth one to dash across the finish line. Justin couldn’t help sobbing at the thought of letting his sister down. But much to his surprise, the runner who collided with him was disqualified for breaking the rule and Justin won the third prize. Justin felt over joyed and relieved during the award ceremony, holding the shoes close to his chest.
Paragraph 2:
Filled with pleasure, Justin walked home in no time. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Justin found Lily was walking about outside nervously and anxiously. “Lily, see what I have got for you,” Justin said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Lily saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Justin. “Thank you! Justin.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and the sister hugged tightly together.
