传说，公元1150年左右苏门答腊的王子在高山上打猎时
发现新加坡这座小岛， 次日便出海到这个小岛上,到达小岛后，看见一只怪兽，当地人告知怪兽为狮子“Singa”，由于当地居民受印度文化影响较深，喜欢用梵语作为地名。而狮子具有勇猛、雄健的特征，后称此地为“Singapura”，新加坡是梵语“狮城”之谐音。
王子随后开始发展新加坡。后人为了纪念王子，就把师子和大海联系起来形成鱼尾狮，新加坡的标志是一种鱼尾狮，新加坡也被称为狮城。
