It’s difficult to know the exact answer to whether babies dream and what they dream about. However, sleep experts have shown that newborns dream the most in the first two weeks after birth. Babies spend most of their sleeping time in the REM (rapid eye movement) stage. As dreaming takes place in a light state of sleep, newborns tend to wake up due to noises, movements and other factors. When dreaming, newborns make a few noises and their eyes move. Their eyes may move around the sides or up and down. They may laugh, scream, or cry during the REM sleep. Also, their facial muscles, hands, and legs move, due to which they may wake up. So wrapping a baby inswaddling (裹紧的) clothes can keep the baby’s body from moving and help him sleep better. As babies grow, their body movements decrease when dreaming.
Studies say that the brain activity associated with dreaming is essential for the babies’ mental development. During the REM stage, the flow of blood to the brain increases. As a result, certain nerve proteins are produced, which are the building units of the brain. Babies get stimulation from what they see, hear, or feel. The brain processes the information acquired while awake, and stores what is essential to the individual. A study concludes that babies learn while they are dreaming.
What’s the time for babies to start dreaming Researchers say that before birth, babies start experiencing REM sleep around week 25, and so they may start dreaming at the point. On the contrary, some psychologists believe that children start having dreams when they are about 5 years old. At that age, they start becoming aware of themselves and begin to understand the things around them, which is what dreams are actually made of.

One moment it was quiet and calm in the forest, the next, the air was charged with tension. The elephant had heard the distant alarm calls of animals and her mood suddenly changed. I urged the elephant deeper into the forest. It sounded like a forest fire-crackling, snapping, trail blazing. But through all the noise came a sharp warning cry. The elephant stopped and we heard it again-the tell-tale call of a spotted deer.
I looked quickly around the shadows of the forest. Rays of sunlight shone through tree branches, beneath which the patchwork (混杂) green plants and shadows-within-shadows would make tiger stripes (条纹) look more attractive. Apart from an occasional noise from the elephant’s stomach, the forest was silent.
Gradually, the tension slipped from our bodies. The elephant seized a nearby branch and put it into her mouth. I reached forward and gently moved my hand over the elephant’s neck; there was a soft part, free of wrinkles and hairs, behind her ear.
This was my fourth time to sense the aura of the forest in Corbett, although I saw no tigers in the end. Located at the foot of the Himalayan mountains, Corbett is home to about 135 Bengal tigers, but the forest seemed to be guarding their whereabouts (出没处), a silent reminder of their secrecy and rarity. Still, I was happy enough touching the elephant behind the ear. If I had so desperately wanted to see a tiger, I could have gone to a zoo. After all, spotting tigers merely confirms their beauty;tracking them can make you aware of something more.

B. A spotted deer called.
C. The elephant seized a branch.
D. The forest was silent for a while.

C
I believe that having a voice in something you put effort into will build you into a stronger person. All the time, I had grown as the one to be taken advantage of, only because I was the one willing to help others.
When I was in high school, I grew tired of the same routine daily, and wanted to be given a challenge. At the beginning of my fresh year, I was selected to be a drum major for the school band. A drum major is the leader of the marching band during rehearsals (排练) and in performances. But I did not know how to take on the actual job for the first time. So I watched many videos on how to act better, though I couldn’t do it very well.
One day, the band was rehearsing again, but no one had memorized their music. Frustrated that the music was just so-so, I lost my temper and then opened my mouth, saying how unacceptable it was because we had been ranked in first place as the best marching band. The moment I had finished my speech on how we should focus better, all jaws were dropped. Even I was surprised: it was the first time that I had opened my mouth about something I cared about. Because of that, I lost some friendships, but developed even stronger relationships with people who wanted to follow my footsteps.
In my last two years of high school, I became known as one full of confidence in any situation. I was the first one to volunteer and the happy one to lend a hand. I learned to have a voice by being chosen to lead the marching band and became stronger through losing and making new connections. And I influenced those youngsters to become a better person than they were yesterday.
8. As a freshman in high school, the author
A. had a desire for a different life
B. got tired of helping other people
C. found it easy to be a drum major
D. felt frustrated to lose his temper

B. Considerate and decent.
C. Outgoing and optimistic.
D. Hard-working and confident.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Learn to Help Others
B. Learn to Have a Voice
C. Build Up Relationships
D. Respond to Challenges

We live in a world where we want everything instantly. In this instant world it is hard to succeed in anything. To achieve your goal you first have to change your life from instantly to persistently (坚持地).
Persistence is the course you need to set. When you change your expectancy from instantly to persistently you will gain an advantage of time that many do not have. Time works against those who live instantly. Opportunities are never seen because when something doesn’t happen instantly people move on to the next thing on their list and consider the current goal a failure.
Persistent people have the advantage of time. It allows them to step back, observe and assess the progress of the goal they are pursuing. Some things take longer to develop;some just need to be left there for a while to find their own way. When you live instantly you gain and lose instantly. Many times you do not know how you get there or how to get back because it is not repeatable. When you live persistently you learn how things work, how to correct a plan and how to guide it to make it successful. You do not panic because you know you have more than enough time.
Slow down and take time to enjoy the journey. If what you are doing is not fun then stop doing it and do something else.
Everything you do should be in pursuit of a better tomorrow than you had yesterday. You should take time to develop your abilities to reach your goals. Do not get discouraged just because your success is not instant.
Celebrate each step along the way. People who live instantly don’t take time to appreciate what they have accomplished. They are just looking for the next thing that they can get instantly.
You must be grateful for the time it takes to reach your goal. Persistence will get you there if you really want to get there.
12. Why will people who want things instantly fail in many things
A. They want greater efficiency.
B. They don’t stick to their goals.
C. They often change their lifestyle.
D. They tend to pursue a higher target.
13. What’s the main advantage persistent people have over instant people
A. The willpower.
B. A target.
C. A plan.
D. An opportunity.
14. According to the text, persistent people ________.
A. focus more on the result
B. work slower than instant people
C. will get rewarded for their efforts
D. don’t appreciate what they have done
15. What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing the text
A. To blame those who live instantly.
B. To persuade people to live happily.
C. To praise those who have succeeded.
D. To suggest learning the art of persistence.

Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell, “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David believed. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the me day to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them and correct them for him. Mrs Brown always corrected the mistakes he had made and gave him good advice to improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

写作
第一节
One possible version:
Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte Bronte, one of whose main characters is a lovely girl called Jane Eyre.
Jane Eyre is an orphan, brought up by her aunt but seriously abused by her. Later, she is sent to a charity school. Eight years later, she works as a governess in Mr Rochester’s house, and gradually they fall in love. But when Jane learns that Mr Rochester has a mad wife, she leaves him. Unfortunately, Mr Rochester becomes blind in an unexpected fire. After that, he lives a hard life. Eventually Jane finds Mr Rochester and marries him.
The story’s plots are very attractive, and Jane Eyre’s perseverance and independence leave a deep impression on me. I guarantee that the book is worth reading and that it is most likely to live up to your expectations.
第二节
One possible version:
Paragraph 1
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognised him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
Paragraph 2
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realised that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.
