Garbage sorting is sweeping the world, because all the cities around the world are facing mountains of garbage produced every day.
In developed countries, the recycling rate of garbage is much higher, thanks to their sorting systems. Take Japan for example. In the past 4 years, the Japanese city of Kamikatsu has raised its recycled waste to 80%.
In Japan, garbage is sorted into four big groups: burnable (可燃的) waste such as household food scraps (残羹剩饭), non burnable waste such as broken glass and batteries, plastic containers as well as recyclable waste such as newspaper and magazines. Hard rubbish such as desks and old TV sets has another system.
Each city in Japan determines (确定) its own rules. “In Japan, you cannot throw away your garbage every day, and the garbage must be sorted out. You have to put the right garbage in the right place at the right time.

In some countries of the world, people have started to reduce the amount of garbage they make. How First, they buy fewer things. They try to buy only what they really need. When you buy fewer things, you throw away fewer things. Second, they reuse things. They use things, and then they use them again! Third, they recycle things. They make old things into new things. People call these the “three Rs”: reduce, ________ and ________. The three Rs help us remember that ________ is a problem.

World Environment Day began in 1972. It is organized by the U.N. every year in different countries. Its aim is to remind people to protect the environment. It has a different theme each year. Theme for this year’s World Environment Day celebrations is Think, Eat, Save. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tonnes (公吨) of food is wasted. At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.
If food is wasted, it means that all the resources (资源) and inputs (投入) used in the production of all the food are also lost. For example, it takes about 1,000 liters of water to produce 1 liter of milk and about 16,000 liters goes into a cow’s food to make a hamburger.
So think before you eat and help save our environment!
For example, you may choose foods that have less environmental impact (影响), such as organic (有机的) foods that do not use chemicals (化学制品) in the production process. Choosing to buy locally can also mean that foods are not flown halfway across the world and therefore limit emissions (排放).
Tasks: 1. What is the theme of World Environment Day this year
2. Why should we think before eating
Because people waste a lot of food every year, which has bad impact on the environment.
What can we do to clean up the world
Please design some activities for World Environmental Day.
You may have a name and a slogan (口号) for the project.
You need to list what to do.

Education and action are key elements (要素) in change. Stamford's school students have many ways to take part in environmental activities, or join a school environment club. Everyone should consider what you can do to help make your school and neighborhood cleaner and greener.
High school courses now give Environmental Science. You may think you know the basics of “being green,” but there’s still a lot more to be studied and the knowledge will be surely good for the environment and yourself in the future.
Some Stamford schools give after-school programs that include lessons and tours of environmental education institutions (教育机构) such as Soundwaters.
Through these programs, you not only learn about your hometown, you learn about how to keep this ecosystem (生态系统) alive and how you can help protect it as well.
