(2019·北京卷) Want to explore new cultures, meet new people and do something worthwhile at the same time You can do all the three with global development association (GDA) . Whatever stage of life you’re at, wherever you go and whatever project you do in GDA, you’ll create positive changes in a poor and remote community (社区).
We work with volunteers of all ages and backgrounds Most of our volunteers are aged 17-24. Now we need volunteer managers aged 25-75. They are extremely important in the safe and effective running of our programmes. We have such roles as project managers, mountain leaders, and communication officers.
Depending on which role you choose, you could help to increase a community’s access to safe drinking water, or help to protect valuable local cultures. You might also design an adventure challenge to train young volunteers.
Not only will you help our young volunteers to develop personally, you’ll also learn new skills and increase your cultural awareness. You may have chances to meet new people who’ll become your lifelong friends.
This summer we have both 4-week and 7-week programmes:

Food serves as a form of communication in two fundamental ways. Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can promote unity and trust Food can also have a specific meaning, and play a significant role in a family or culture’s celebrations or traditions. The foods we eat--and when and how we eat them-are often unique to a particular culture or may even differ between rural (农村的) and urban areas within one country.
Sharing bread, whether during a special occasion (时刻) ai or at the family dinner table, is a common symbol of togetherness. Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with cakes that are cut and shared among the guests Early forms of cake were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition has its roots in the custom of sharing bread.
Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United States, pieces of corn bread represent blocks of gold for prosperity (兴旺) in the New Year. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. a coin is put into the cake, which signifies (预示) success in the New Year for the person who receives it.
Many cultures have ceremonies to celebrate the birth of a child, and food can play a significant role. In China, when a baby is one month old, families name and welcome their child in a celebration that includes giving red-colored eggs to guests. In many cultures, round foods such as grapes, bread and mooncakes are eaten at welcome celebrations to represent family unity.
Nutrition is necessary for life, so it is not surprising that food is such an important part of different cultures around the world.

C analyzing causes.
D describing processes.
( )15. What is the passage mainly about
A. The custom of sharing food.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy--his name was Bernard--had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him, she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. He is such a help to his mother he wants very much to earn some money, but I don’t see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
So do l, said Harry. We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成) . ”
The other children also jumped up. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us well, we can make popcorn (爆米花) , and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

由文章第三段信息“…. we are inspired by the people we meet doing extraordinary things to improve the world (…我们被我们遇到的、做事出色而美化世界的人激励着) 以及第四段“They have a different kind of superpower that all of us possess:the power to make a difference in the lives of others.
由文章第五段的信息“But we do think that you can live a more powerful life when you devote some of your time and energy to something much larger than yourself. ”以及Whatever you do, don’t be a bystander. Get involved.
根据文章最后一段的信息“It has changed who we are and continues to fuel our optimism about how much the lives of the poorest people will improve in the years ahead.
由第一段第二句“Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can promote unity and trust. A项在文章中没有提到;C项 (是农村地区特有的习俗) 与第段末句“The foods. are often unique to a particular culture or may even differ between rural and urban areas. . ”表述不一致, 故排除;D项 (起源于生日庆祝) 与第二段中的 so this tradition has its roots in the custom of sharing bread相矛盾, 可排除。
由第三段的“A coin is put into the cake, which signifies success in the New Year for the person who receives it.
Here’s how to make one.
22. B下文中 For disabled people, “adopting a wheelchair” Is not a temporary提到了 adopt这个词, 指的是让人们采用乘坐轮椅的方式了解残疾人, 这是一种暗示;此处指的是被要求“接受残疾”几个小时以了解残疾人, 因此选B。
24. A根据下文的“I had never considered before how It would be to use one.
I would have to handle the thing myself,
My hands started to ache和后面的 the heavy metal wheels可知, 当作者转动轮子让轮椅移动的时候, 因为费力所以手都疼了。
34. D前文已经提到了 for several hours one Sunday, 联系下文的t made a deep impression on me.
36. celebration attend the celebration
37. and her grandson Brian和 his wife Lauren是两个人物, 中间需要连词连接。
38. to include a plan to do sth.
40. to make a visit to. .

When Mrs. Meredith heard of Johns idea, she thought it was a good one, too. So she praised John for his proposal, and offered him some advice. Very soon the children were busy popping the corn, while their mother went out to buy the paper bags. When she came back, she brought Bernard with her. All the children came surrounding Bernard and they gave a basket to Bernard. The basket was full of paper bags which were filled with popcorn.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. And much sooner than could be expected, Bernard returned with an empty basket. Never before had he earned so much money in his life. When he found that it was all to be his, he was so happy that he could hardly speak, but his bright smiling face spoke for him. People began to watch or the “little popcorn boy”, who earned some money to take home every week. All this was because of Johns bright idea.
