Five years ago, I took a career risk by leaving my job to work on a ship. My medical friends did their best to persuade me, saying that running away to sea would ruin my career. But after these years’ working as a junior, I was willing to take the risk.
Hungry for adventure, I boarded a ship in Singapore with 2, 000 passengers and crew. To my relief, the hospital was well equipped, with an X-ray machine and a blood analyzer. That first voyage was a learning experience, a tight schedule full of safety drills. There was so much new information to take in. Even remembering which uniform to wear each day was a challenge. Most confusingly, I often forgot to set my clock when the ship crossed time zones.
As a doctor, I was responsible for 600 crew, and I was on call for the entire ship. Far from treating seasickness and sunburn. I had to deal with other diseases, for my patients were wide and varied. The ship’s medical center was actually a floating emergency room, and we didn’t have a team of specialists on hand for a second opinion. With long and unpredictable hours, it required mental toughness.
As you can guess, many of the passengers were elderly, Heart attacks didn’t care about geography and emergency evacuation(疏散)was difficult to arrange. I recall one such patient, who was taken off the ship halfway through the Panama Canal. After a terrifying ride in an old ambulance, I was relieved that the patient survived long enough to arrive at the hospital in Panama City.
Thankfully, there were several unexpected benefits to the job I regularly enjoyed the passenger facilities and I even hosted my own table of passengers in the evenings. On rare days off, I volunteered as a tour guide on trips ashore. I got to fly over Alaska in a seaplane and watched a ballet in St. Petersburg.
Now, I understand being a ship doctor is not a job—it’s a way of life. One year at sea became two. I lost my career ambitions, but I redefined happiness in my life.
4. How did the writer feel working on the ship
A. Regretful
B. Satisfied
C. Scared
D. Nervous
5. What was the writer's most puzzling thing on the ship
A. Wearing the same uniform each day.
B. Absorbing plenty of new information.
C. Having a tight timetable full of safety drills.
D. Forgetting to adjust time by time zones.
6. What can we learn from Paragraph 4
A. The patient suffered from an unknown disease.
B. The patient was taken to a safe place immediately.
C. The patient got timely treatment in the hospital.
D. The patient died on the way to the nearest hospital.
7. Why did the writer lose his career ambitions later on
A. He had a new understanding of happiness.
B. He could enjoy the passenger facilities.
C. He was content to be a tour guide on trips.
D. He gave up the dream of being a doctor.

Every year, thousands of teenagers participate in programs at their local art museums. But do any of them remember their time at museum events later in life A new report suggests that the answer is yes and finds that alumni(毕业生)of arts-based museum programs credit(认为是……功劳)them with changing the course of their lives, even years after the experience.
The Whitney Museum of American Art in the Walker Art Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles recently asked researchers to conduct a study to find out how effective their long-standing(存在已久的)teen art programs really were. They involved over 300 former participants of four programs for teens that have been in existence since the 1990s. Alumni, whose current ages range from 18 to 36, were invited to find out how they viewed their participation years after the fact.
Among the surveyed alumni, 75 percent of alumni rated(评价)the teen program experience as the most favorable influence on their own lives beating the family, school and their neighborhoods. Nearly 55 percent thought that it was one of the most important experiences they’d ever had, regardless of age. And two-thirds said that they were often in situations where their experience in museums affected their actions or thoughts.
It turns out that participating in art programs also helps keep teens enthusiastic about the arts even after they reach adulthood: 96 percent of participants have visited an art museum within the last two years, and 68 percent have visited an art museum five or more times within the last two years. Thirty-two percent of program alumni work in the arts as adults.
Though the study is the first of its kind to explore the influence of teen-specific art programs in museums, it reflects other research on the important benefits of engaging with the arts. A decade of surveys by the National Endowment for the Arts found that childhood experience with the arts was significantly associated with their income and educational attainments(成就)as adults. Other studies have linked art education to everything from lower drop-out rates to improvement in critical(批判性的)thinking skills.
8. What does the underlined phrase “the experience” in Paragraph 1 refer to
A. Joining in teenager art programs.

9. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The aim of the study.

D. The process of the study.

A. No other studies about the benefits of the arts exist.
B. Love for the arts may keep long in kids’ whole life.

We spend a third of our adult lives working and another big part preparing for our careers. Historically, work was rarely seen as a source of meaning and purpose. during the vast majority of our 300, 000 year human evolution(进化), work was in fact pretty simple. We worked to eat and avoid being eaten. Meaning and purpose came from somewhere else, like art, religion or science.
The idea that we are meant to find meaning at work or to find work meaningful-is a rather modern if not postmodern, invention. Only one hundred years ago it would have been frequent to see a worker who returned from a typical workday at a factory complain to his folks that he didn’t earn much or he was worn out and rare to see that he complained he didn't experience a sense of purpose.
Similarly, the idea that we ought to bring our “whole self” to work is a pretty novel and recent form of career advice. Its origins can be traced to William Kahn who invented the concept of employee engagement 30 years ago. His point is that employees differ in the degree to which they identify with their work role. Some see work as merely a job and clock in and out(上下班打卡)every day, without bringing their whole self to work. Work is just not a core aspect of their identity, and their concept of themselves is built on other social categories like mother, husband, American, Christian, captain of the local soccer team etc.
Others, however, have very low psychological distance from their work role, seeing it as essentially intertwined(紧密相连)with who they are. They don’t just come to work. They are fully devoted to their careers and have a spiritual type of connection with their jobs. They are, it seems, almost possessed y work and are the type of workaholics(工作狂)most companies long for.
12. Why did we spend much of our adult lives working
A. To prepare for future careers.
B. To find the water sources.
C. To help us evolve.
D. To make us survive.
13. Why did the writer mention the worker a century ago
A. To help us find meaning at work.
B. To prove that the idea is modern.
C. To show us the bad old days.
D. To complain about the experience.
14. Which of the following might William Kahn agree with
A. Employees have different understandings of their work role.
B. Every employee must bring their whole self to work.
C. To be devoted to work is a pretty novel idea.
D. Workers’ core identity is built on art categories.
15. what kind of employees do most companies favour
A. Those who see work as a job.
B. Those who identify with their work role.
C. Those who are fully devoted to their work.
D. Those who possess experience.

第三部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
Dear sir/madame,
I’m Li Hua, a high school student from Beijing. Interested in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, I’m writing to apply to be a volunteer in the games.
I have the necessary qualifications and experience needed for the voluntary job. Above all, I’m a fluent English speaker so that I have no difficulty communicating with visitors. Besides, keen on sports, I’m quite familiar with different events and the locations of the venues as a local. Equally importantly, I previously served as a volunteer several times which is also an advantage over other candidates. I do believe I can do the job well if I’m granted a chance.
I’m looking forward to your early response.
Yours,
Li Hua
