Just then, an air hostess came up to her and asked,“Could you please change your seat A man would like to sit with his wife.” Mary felt unhappy because the only seat was next to a girl with her arms broken, a black-and-blue face, and a sad expression. “I don’t want to sit there,” Mary thought immediately. But the air hostess said,“The girl needs help.” Finally, Mary moved to that seat.
The girl was named Emily. She was hurt in a car accident and now was on her way for treatment. When the snacks and juice arrived, Mary realized that Emily could not feed herself. If your pen broke at school today, what would you do You would go to a shop and buy a new one. What if you could simply print out a real, working pen with your 3-D printer without leaving your room
Ten years ago people could only see 3-D printing in science fiction movies. But now 3-D printing is here and it’s bringing big changes.
Unlike normal printing that can only copy a 2-D picture with ink, 3-D printing can build almost anything made from material. The printer layers(分层) the material in different shapes to create the object you want to be copied.
The 3-D printer has been used to make many different things. People have made cups, cars and even an airplane with it.
Doctors have been using 3-D printers for several years. People’s nervous systems have been printed out in 3-D form medical research. Some body parts have been printed and used in hospitals. Several months ago, doctors used a 3-D printer to rebuild the face of a person who had a bad accident. In the future, it is expected that the printer will make human organs to save more lives.
However, there are drawbacks to the printer. At the moment, printing can be quite slow and it’s still rather expensive. The average price of a household printer is around $1,700, not including the cost of the materials.
But as technology develops, it shouldn’t be long before disadvantages are improved. Only time will tell where this new technology will take us.

Rice is one of the most commonly eaten basic foods around the world. Buying it and cooking it is a daily matter. Yet for many, its presence has been a matter of life and death. It is a main food because it is easy to grow, besides low cost and convenience. A poor community in the developing world may find it difficult to bring in foreign fruit or raise cattle for meat, but it can almost certainly use the land it has in order to grow plenty of rice.
This was the great achievement of Yuan Longping, who passed away on May 22, 2021. The great Chinese scientist successfully developed what is known as “hybrid rice” which can produce up to a 30% higher output. Yuan Longping was born in the year 1930, a time when China was very different. It was a nation, without modern industry, depending on the rice which people grew. The first few decades (十年) of his life were met with major social events, and a rapidly growing population that made food supply not last all the time. This experience left its mark on Yuan Longping, which made him focus on (关注) farming science and work on his research of hybrid rice.
His achievement would see the rice supply in China increasing from 56.9 million tons in 1950 to 194.7 million tons by 2017. By 1991, 20% of the world’s rice output came from hybrid rice, even if only being planted in 10% of fields.

Aunt Jia had a snack stand(摊位) in our neighborhood. Her snacks never failed to satisfy my stomach. What’s more, she was always patient with her customers. Even COVID-19 didn’t influence her business.
One day, during the last Spring Festival, I saw a large family visiting her stand. It formed a heart-warming picture: Each family member was enjoying being together. As they were leaving, I noticed Aunt Jia felt a bit sad.
I was amazed. In my experience, she was always smiling. I went forward and ordered my favorite snack. When she was wrapping(打包), I couldn’t help asking, “Happy New Year, Aunt Jia! Why don’t you take a break ” Aunt Jia looked surprised, but she soon replied, “Happy New Year! I love working here in this city. It’s too cold and snowy in my hometown.” I became more curious(好奇的), “Where do you come from Aren’t your family waiting for you to come home for the celebration ” Aunt Jia stopped for a few seconds. “They sure are,” she answered gently. “But I have to stay here. Many students want to improve their memories and learn better. Today we will introduce some no-cost things you can do.
Exercise
Before you study, doing exercise may help you better remember what you will learn. Recently, researchers have found that people who did 15 minutes of training remembered more words. Scientists say the best time to exercise is right before you study. It can make you more active.
Pre-study test
The students who take a test before studying remember more information than those who don’t. For example, if you are using an English textbook, you might first look at some important words at the end of the unit. You could ask yourself what they mean or how they are used. While you might not know the answer, you will probably have a goal to learn so that you can remember the answer when studying!
Sleep
A study shows that sleep helps you to learn in two ways. An expert explains that “a person with enough sleep can concentrate best”. He also says, “Sleep itself plays an important role in making the memory stronger, which is necessary for learning new information.”
Wakeful rest
When you finish studying, you often go straight to another activity. Perhaps you play a video game or watch TV. But researchers suggest that resting after you study may help you remember what you’ve studied. In a study, even older adults who rested for 10 minutes after learning new words remember more and better.

There was once a painter whose goal was to paint the most beautiful painting in the world. Day and night he painted to make his greatest work. He painted many paintings, but every time, he would throw away paintings that he thought were less than perfect.
At the same time, another painter who worked in the same studio(工作室) also painted many paintings. He tried his best to paint and seldom threw any paintings away. The first painter would sometimes walk by, looking at the second painter’s finished works, and laugh at them. “No one will buy these paintings. They are worthless!” he would say.
The second painter would always answer,“We’ll see.” And in time, the second painter sold nearly all of his works. People were happy with them, even if they were less than perfect.
The first painter never achieved what he wanted and finally gave up his dream of perfection. He went home, penniless(身无分文的),having never sold any of his paintings.
There is a saying—“Practice makes perfect.” It is used to say that people become better at something if they do it often. For example, if you want to be a good writer, you should write every day.
But in fact, this saying is not always true. No one is perfect, and looking for perfection often ends in failure(失败). But if we simply do our best and work hard, we can usually succeed in life.

During the wars, a soldier(士兵) looked after his horse with the greatest care. He gave it the best food and the clearest water. Once all the animals lived in the forest happily together. A family went to spend a day in the forest, and the son left his socks there. A bear found the socks, and decided to try them on. They looked so nice, and he liked them so much that he wouldn’t take them off.

Four beggars usually met at an old shack at the end of the day. One day, they were very upset because none of them had got much in their begging bowls.
“I only got this piece of meat today,” the first said. “I hardly got anything,” the second said. “I just picked up these few vegetables outside the fruit and vegetable store.” The third complained that all he had been given was a handful of herbs (香草) that he couldn’t eat on his own. The fourth beggar had not done much better. “I only got the handful of old, dried beans, but they aren’t very nice!”
As they sat around the fire, one of them had a great idea. “Let’s put all our bits together and boil them. In this way, we can make a tasty dish and share it.” They all agreed.
However, the first beggar thought: “I don’t want to share. I’ll just pretend (假装) to throw my meat into the pot. They’ll never know and I’ll eat my meat later.” So he pretended to put the meat into the pot. Now the same idea had also hit the other beggars and the shack was so dark that no one could see what the others were doing.

Gift giving is different from culture to culture and person to person.
When giving gifts, sometimes color is important. For example, for many Chinese people around the world, red is a lucky color, and people often like to wrap(包装)gifts in this color. However, do you know that in Korea, red is a color of death That is why you should not wrap your gifts in this color if you are giving a gift to a Korean person. What about Western countries In Western countries, the color of wrapping paper is not really important. But color does matter when giving flowers, especially roses. You should not give red roses to a Western person you don’t know very well because they are a symbol of love. You could give yellow roses instead as these are a symbol of friendship. You could also send pink roses as gifts to say thank you.
What other things should you remember when giving gifts to someone from a different culture Well, one thing you should keep in mind is the person’s religion(宗教).
