Passage 1
I recently started a new job, in a small office, where four of us shared a fridge. In that fridge was a water filter pitcher(过滤壶). Mary, one of my workmates complained the water tasted “dirty”. It went on for a few days, and she was shocked that I could drink the water without any trouble. I started to doubt whether there was something wrong with my taste buds, but the water really tasted fine.
Finally, she found out the problem was actually her cup. She simply forgot to clean it, and after a while it started to affect the water inside it. She cleaned her cup, and drank the water with no problem.
I can’t help thinking about the world we live in. Too often we quickly blame other people, other things, anything else but ourselves. “You’re silly.” “You’re intolerant(褊狭的).” “You’re the problem.” The world isn’t perfect, I know, but I think we should take a step back sometimes and ask ourselves some tough questions.
Can I be better Is my heart really pure(纯洁的) Can I help this situation with kindness

Passage 2
Have you ever heard “You never get a second chance to make a first impression” It may sound like an unusual suggestion, but it is true—the first impression someone has of you when meeting you for the first time will probably influence how that person treats you or reacts to you in the future.
What is even more interesting is that the brain takes in all the information to create the first impression in about three seconds. When you meet someone for the first time, by the time you have stated your name or shaken hands, the other person has already formed an opinion about the kind of person you are.
So how do you make a good first impression All things grown-ups tell you—such as being polite and being well-dressed—are very important. However, the most important tool for making a good first impression is your face. Smiling, being responsive, and looking like you are happy will almost always leave a positive impression on people, especially those who do not know you. Most people, generally speaking, are ready to smile back when they are smiled at.
Furthermore, smiling and being in a positive mood help you to know and get a better understanding of new things. This means that you can possibly be friendlier to people you do not know and be more creative and able to solve problems more quickly. So if you ever need a reason to be happy, think about the wonderful people you might meet and impress them with a cheerful smile.

One day as two little boys were walking along the road, they met a woman carrying a large basket of apples. The woman looked very pale and tired, so they said, “Are you going to town If you are, we will carry your basket.”
“Thank you,” replied the woman, “you are very kind.” Then she told them that her husband had died, and that she had a sick son to support. She lived in a small house three miles away, and was now going to town to sell the apples which grew on the only tree in her little garden.
“We are going the same way you are,” said the boys. “Let us have the basket.” And they took hold of it, one on each side.
The poor woman then offered to give them a few of the biggest apples for their help. “No, thank you,” they said. “We do not want any pay for what we have done.”
When the woman got home, she told her son what had happened on the way, and they were both made happier that day by the kindness of the two boys.
Perhaps some may say that this is a little thing. Sure, it is. But to do great things, we should begin with little labors(劳动) of love.
