Jill stared at the wall angrily. Pedro, her lab mate, hesitated before asking, “Jill, what’s up ” “Nothing, thanks!” She turned back to her computer, leaving Pedro surprised.
Pedro, from Argentina, had spent the first 2 years of his PhD in Germany before his adviser moved the lab to the United States. Jill was new in the lab. “People act like robots and don’t care about the feelings of others,” she told him later. “That’s what made me angry.” Jill had been busy writing an application for her first research grant (拨款). She wanted to get some feedback from their adviser. When she got the draft back, she was shocked by what she received-15 pages full of pure criticism (批评).
Pedro wondered how to approach the situation. He turned to Jill, “During my first few months working in his lab, I secretly called him Mr. Ice Age. But now I consider him to be kind-hearted. He is upright (正直的) and he cares about his lab members. It’s true that when he gives negative (负面的) feedback, he’s direct, though. It is a cultural thing. He grew up in Germany, where the culture on criticism is different. They never sugarcoat criticism.”
Pedro went on to explain that though Americans and Germans approached work discussions similarly by using a direct way, things sometimes diverge when it comes to criticism. For himself, the biggest challenge was the lack (缺乏) of personal connection. “When I first met the boss, he just told me about the project and wished me good luck. That was it.”
“I did my PhD in Spain. On the first day, we had a huge party together to celebrate my arrival,” Jill told him. Pedro smiled, “People do it differently everywhere, don’t they ” “Yes, they do,” answered Jill.
24.Why did Jill feel sad according to the text

B.She lacked confidence in her research.

A.He hardly shows respect for his students.
B.He is good at correcting others’ mistakes.
C.He is an upright but mean professor.
D.He gives his negative feedback directly.
26.What does the underlined word “diverge” in paragraph 4 mean
A.Extend. B.Differ. C.Improve. D.Pause.
27.What might Jill come to realize at last
A.Communication is influenced by people’s attitude.
B.Cultural differences can lead to misunderstanding.
C.Science develops because of cross-culture exchange.
D.Everyone should try to understand one another better.

Each year people are crazy about different ceremonies. Many graduation ceremonies look special and different. But for Melody, it looked so unique because of the classmate who graduated alongside her — her grandmother, 75-year-old Pat Ormond. They both went to the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC) and graduated together.
Pat took her first college class 42 years ago. After one semester, she dropped out to move to Chattanooga, where she spent the next several decades working as an accountant and raising a family. While she did take an occasional class at UTC, she says her family continued to encourage her to go back to finish her degree, especially after she retired. She agreed when her granddaughter decided to move to study psychology at UTC after a year at Berea College. They both entered UTC with enough college credits to make graduating together a possibility.
Pat and Melody graduated on November 20 as part of UTC’s 2020 class. The achievement has also made Pat somewhat of a celebrity.
“We are so proud to have graduates like Melody and her grandmother, Pat Ormond, in the UTC class of 2020,” said Steven, UTC Chancellor. “Together, they personify the determination, commitment and love for lifelong learning we encourage in every UTC graduate.”
Pat hopes that she can be an example to other non-traditional college students who want to get their degrees. “Learning never stops,” Pat said. “That’s something that my father taught me when I was young. No matter what you do, learning never stops.” Pat isn’t planning to stop anytime soon. She’s already working on another degree-a bachelor’s degree in history.
Meanwhile, her granddaughter, who is hunting jobs, is interested in getting a master’s degree in clinical psychology so she can become a lawyer. But she says she’s in no rush. Her nanna has taught her that she has plenty of time.
28.Why was Melody’s graduation ceremony so special
A.Because her grandmother graduated alongside her. B.Because her grandmother was 75 years old.
C.Because it looked quite different from others. D.Because she celebrated it with all her classmates.
29.What can we know about Pat’s family
A.They are anxious to be celebrities. B.They prefer attending non-traditional colleges.
C.They never stop creating opportunities. D.They support and encourage each other.
30.What does the underlined word “personify” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Repeat. B.Represent. C.Identify. D.Follow.
31.Which of the following can best describe Pat Ormond’s story

C.A good beginning is half done. D.It’s never too late to learn.

Programs that drive the digital experiences today seem to turn to contents that are popular, and they are unable to tell facts from fictions. And due to the fact that anyone can post anything they want online, unconfirmed reports and irresponsible and unchecked contents are common in the online world.
The problem is so common that the British newspaper The Independent has a whole page contributed to news about fake news, along with Mashable’s social media and a growing number of others.
During the past days when most kids used textbooks that had been edited and reviewed responsibly before they were used, the need for students to check their sources was not great. Today, it’s different. Students use the Internet for research, and teachers and parents can’t keep them away from bad contents all the time. And they’re on their own as they get older. They have to master information literacy, the skills of recognizing bad information, identifying good information, and understanding the difference between the two.
There are people and organizations dealing with the problem and developing information for Internet searchers, both adults and children. The website of Encyclopedia Britannica, for example, has provided Internet searchers with extra information at the top right of their results page. The move was intended to make people slow down and think twice before accepting search results as facts.
Fake news is here to stay. We all need to fight. We can start with awareness and a few rules: don’t make the web full of bad information: don’t spread or share information if you aren’t sure about it. And be mindful of how we use information: practice information literacy. And human curiosity is of great importance in this fight against misinformation. Curiosity drives learning and makes people question information. We need everyone to join in researching and questioning for the truth.
32.What problem is described about the online world
A.We are given too much information.
B.Useless results often show up first online.
C.The Internet includes much fake information.
D.Fake news is spread purposely to attract searchers.
33.What does the third paragraph mainly talk about
A.The need for information literacy. B.Different generations’ learning style.
C.How networks affect today’s students. D.Why fake contents exist on the Internet.
34.What does the website of Encyclopedia Britannica do for searchers
A.It marks the facts. B.It provides more details.
C.It corrects the search results. D.It alarms searchers if necessary.
35.Which of the following would the author agree with
A.It is hard to clean up all fake news. B.We can’t speak freely in cyberspace.
C.People should be forced to follow the rules. D.We should keep curious to discover the truth.

第二节(满分25分)
67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落的开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For many years, I had a recurring (重复出现的) dream. I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
“Hurry, you’ll be late for school,” my mother called to me.
“I am hurrying, Mom! What did I do with my books ”
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from. It was about some unfinished business in my life. As a kid, I loved everything about school. I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle (通道) to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15, I had to drop out because my parents couldn’t afford tuition (学费). My hope of getting a diploma was dead, or so I thought. Pretty soon, I married and had three children, and I thought: “There goes my diploma.”
Even so, I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型关节炎) in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom. I felt really sorry for her and I didn’t want her to live her life with regret. I didn’t give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day, I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. “That’s the answer,” I said to myself. Linda always feels better in the evening, so I’ll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment (入学) forms when the secretary said: “Mrs. Schantz, why don’t you come back to school ”
I laughed: “There’s no way! I’m 55!” But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done, I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. “This is only an experiment,” I warned him, but he just smiled. So, I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work. Anyway, my dream was still there in my heart.
Paragraph 1:
It was exciting to go to school again but it was no game. Sitting in a classroom full of kids was awkward, even if most of them were respectful and encouraging. During the day, I was still a busy married woman having loads of housework to do. In the evening, I was a hardworking student working on my courses. To my surprise, both Linda and I did very well in night school. I went back again the next semester, and my grades steadily improved.
Paragraph 2:
Linda and I encourage each other through all these years.

I love my family
There are four people in my family. We live happily together. There are many things occurring around us, creating many wonderful and loving moments in my memory.
Last weekend, I had so much homework to do that I couldn’t play with my brother. So I designed a board game for him to play with my mum. Hearing their laughter, I felt settled and began to focus on my homework.
Sometimes, it’s enough to have the ones you love around you. What’s better is to make them happy.
67.Linda and I encourage each other through all these years. When I was down, Linda encouraged me. “Mom, you can’t quit now!” And when she was down, I encouraged her. I have to say it was a time which was really hard on both of us. But neither of us gave up. At last, I got my diploma. To my surprise, almost all of my classmates voted for me to be class speaker, and I got a $3,000 college scholarship. The unfinished business in my dreams was eventually finished.
