Babies born with serious medical conditions often spend their first few days in the intensive-care unit (重症监护室) of a hospital. Medical workers put tape (胶带) on the babies to hold down tubes and electronic equipment. Experts say that having to change the tape daily or remove it when those babies are well enough to go home can be painful and even dangerous.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology says more than one million babies suffer skin injuries from medical tape removal each year. But now there is a new kind of tape that is much softer.
Doctor Karp works for the Women’s Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He and his team wanted to create a medical tape that was strong and could be removed without harming the skin.
Normally, medical tape has two layers—a non-sticky backing (衬背) and a sticky part. The new tape adds another layer of sticky adhesive (粘合剂). It remains on the skin after the tape is removed. Doctor Karp says this adhesive can be easily removed with talcum powder (爽身粉).
The new, softer adhesive tape was designed for newborns. But the researchers say it will also help many old patients, whose thin and weak skin can sometimes tear. The new tape is made from materials already widely used.
Doctor Karp believes it will receive government approval, and be available soon to hospitals and medical centers. The researchers have requested patent (专利) right on the tape. They are also asking health officials for permission to test it on adults.
31. What is the good news to the new-born babies who are sick?
A. A new kind of tape is created. B. Tape needn’t be used to them.

A bachelor’s degree is what many students pursue when enrolling in a US university or college. There are various types of schools that offer bachelor’s degree programs. Before deciding which school is the best for you, it is important to understand the different types of colleges or universities in the US. Below are some basic types you’ll find in the US.
Private universities
These schools are operated by private individuals and are financed by private funds. These schools are not controlled by any government agency and they can offer many bachelor’s degree options (选择权). Tuition at private schools is normally much higher than that at public schools because of the lack of financial support from the government.
Public universities
These schools are operated by a state government and are financed by public funds. They are also state universities and there is sometimes the word “state” in their names (for example, San Diego State University). The tuition charged by these schools is typically much lower for students who are residents (居民) of the state where the school is located. Public universities offer bachelor’s degrees and some offer master’s and PhD degrees, too.
Liberal arts colleges
These are schools that offer bachelor’s degree programs and provide students with a broad-based (广泛的) rather than a highly focused education. These schools are described in detail in the liberal arts section.
Institutes of technology
These are schools that offer bachelor’s degree programs and courses primarily on the fields of science and engineering. Unlike a liberal arts college, institutes of technology provide students with an education that is focused on their major. These schools are usually best known for their graduate programs.
34. Why is tuition at private schools charged higher than that at public schools?

Blue and green honey may look cool, but beekeepers (养蜂人) in northeastern France are not happy about their odd-looking new products.
Over the past few months, beekeepers in Ribeauvillé, a town located in the Alsace region, have noticed that the bees there have been making honey in many strange colors. The bees have been returning to the places where beehives (蜂房) are kept and honey is made with different colors coating their bodies. The colors then end up contaminating the honey.
A recent research showed that a nearby M&M’s factory is behind the change in color. Waste from the factory has been exposing the bees to a number of chemicals. Some of the chemicals are used in the outer shells of candies, which come in many bright colors.
The local beekeepers do not know if the polluted honey is dangerous to eat, but they are not taking any chances. They are throwing away the candy-colored honey, which means a big loss to the local business.
“For me, it’s not honey,” Alain Frieh, leader of the town’s beekeepers union, said. “It’s not suitable to sell.”
The honey industry in this part of France has been suffering this year. According to Frieh, many bees died last winter or were unable to make honey because of the harsh weather conditions. This new problem of colored honey is hurting the beekeepers’ way of life even more.
The region is home to about 2,400 beekeepers and 35,000 colonies (蜂群) of bees. The beekeepers harvest about 1,000 tons of honey each year, making the product a big part of the region’s economy.
Agrivalor is the company that processes the M&M’s factory’s waste. It is about 2.5 miles from Ribeauville. According to co-manager Philippe Meinrad, the company has been attempting to stop the pollution.
38. The underlined word “contaminating” in Para. 2 probably means “ ”.
A. sweetening B. polluting C. reducing D. drying
39. The bees make colorful honey because .
A. they are brought up in a special way
B. they feed on flowers of different colors
C. they are exposed to some chemicals
D. they get their honey from colorful candies
40. The blue and green honey .
A. can be eaten without any treatment
B. will be sold at a higher price
C. can be regarded as a new product
D. might do harm to people’s health
41. What has already affected the honey industry there?
A. The bad weather. B. The water pollution.
C. The reduced beekeepers. D. The lower honey price.

Antarctica is a continent of extremes which holds the title of the coldest, driest and windiest location on the earth. But even in such harsh conditions, Antarctica still remains the home of a large variety of extraordinary wildlife. Wildlife here is most active in summer months. During this time, seals, whales, penguins and a large diversity of other seabirds migrate to the continent to breed. So don’t miss this opportunity to have a look at these lovely creatures here.
Penguins
Penguins are considered to be the continent’s signature species. Penguin’s bodies are designed for swimming. Powerful paddle muscles allow penguins to swim up to 25 mph. Totally, there are 17 species of penguins found in this region.
Seabirds
Seabirds breed along the coast and offshore islands of Antarctica. To survive in the hard environment, the birds have waterproof (不透水的) feather, and large bodies with a thick layer of fat under their skin. The birds will move to north as the summer months come to an end, spending the winter in more mild climates.
Seals
Much of the early exploration of Antarctica was the search for new seal communities. During the 19th and 20th century, seals were hunted for their valuable skins and oils. The entire population of the species was driven to the edge of dying out. Thankfully, their number has continued to thrive (兴旺) due to the efforts of some organizations. Seals spend most of their life in water, but they must return to land to breed.
Whales
Unlike other wildlife of Antarctica, whales do not breed in this region. However, they take advantage of the nutrient-filled waters here. Every summer, these giant creatures moved to Antarctica from their mild breeding waters in the north. Like seals, several species of whales have become endangered species due to overfishing. Although some regulations have been placed on whaling activities, these giants have not seen their population recover as well as the seals.
42. What comes to people’s mind first when it comes to wildlife in Antarctica?
A. Seabirds. B. Penguins. C. Seals. D. Whales.
43. Which of the following is NOT true about Antarctic seabirds?
A. They have waterproof feather.
B. The fat under their skin helps the seabirds survive the environment.
C. They move to north as the summer months come to an end.
D. They spend their whole life in Antarctica.
44. From the text we can infer that .
A. penguins are not good at swimming
B. seals still face extinction even today
C. summer months are the active time for wildlife in Antarctica
D. whales breed in Antarctica every summer
45. What is the best title for the text?

Getting along with parents
Mom and dad are the most important people in your life, and they’re likely to influence you more than anyone else in your lifetime. It’s a parent’s job to love and guide kids, and most parents will do this as long as they live. 46 Here are four ways you can stay close, get along, and build a strong relationship.
Spend time together. It might be easy to be physically in the same place with your mom and dad. 47 Instead of playing a computer game or watching TV by yourself, maybe you should ask your mom and dad to play with you. You can go outside together, try a board game, or read a book together.
48 Many kids say they would like their parents to help them when they’re upset. But your mom and dad might not know that you’re having a problem. Tell your parents if you’re sad or struggling with something. If you don’t usually do this, give it a try and you will be glad.
Be kind. Little things might mean a lot to your mom and dad. 49 It’s also lovely when a kid offers to help fold the laundry or cleans up his or her room without being asked. And if you try not to fight with your brothers or sisters, your parents might be so excited!
Show your care. Some families are always kissing, hugging, and saying “I love you”. 50 In addition to kisses and hugs, kids and parents can show their love by respecting each other, being caring, polite, and thoughtful.
A. But how much time do you spend just enjoying each other’s company?
B. It’s important to show that you care for each other.
C. But parents do a lot more than just pass down their hobbies.
D. Share your feelings and ask for help.
E. Talk on the phone and email each other to stay in touch.
F. You can brighten your parents’ day with a hug, a card or a joke.
G. That means you have many years ahead to share with your mom and dad.
