二、完形填空(共20小题;每小题1.5分,满分30分)
I have been writing for more than 50 years. But I still consider myself 16 to it, because I have written only one book. 17 , I have written thousands of letters, more than a hundred e-books and 18 millions of words on the Internet for hundreds of websites.
Though I don’t like foreign languages, I have also been 19 and have learned seven of them. I was 20 to study French, German and Latin for six years at school and Russian for four years at university, yet none of these was as 21 as writing a book of excellent 22 . And I am only talking about 23 here, not plot, although that is obviously 24 too.
Rules change in languages. The strict rules of the 19th century were largely 25 over the following 100 years. However, some rules 26 and that is how it should be too. Rules in writing are very important. And writing is a 27 thing and it involves languages, plots, reader’s preferences, etc. So, who should 28 writing and book competitions? And what rules should they 29 ? Readers buy more books than writers and language experts put together. And writers write for readers, some of whom might be other writers or teachers. 30 , there has to be a storyline or plot that is of 31 , but who should be the judge of that?
There is an author, John Locke, who sold a million books in five months, yet he was 32 for his style and content by experts, 33 surely he must have been doing something 34 . Currently, most writing competitions are judged by writers and this seems 35 to me. I suggest that if there are five judges, three should be readers, one should be a writer and one should be an English teacher.

Recently, I heard a touching story which shows the power of words that could change a child’s life forever—a power that lies right in the hands of those reading this article. Mary had grown up knowing that she was different from other kids, and she hated it. She was born with a cleft palate (腭裂) and had to put up with the cruel jokes of those children. With all the jeers, Mary grew up hating the fact that she was “different”. She was convinced that no one, except her family, could ever love her ... until she entered Mrs. Leonard’s class.
Mrs. Leonard had a warm smile, a round face and shiny brown hair. Everyone in her class liked her. In the 1950s, it was common for teachers to give their students a hearing test every year. However, in Mary’s case, in addition to her cleft palate, she was hardly able to hear out of one ear. Determined not to let other children have another “difference” to point out, she would cheat in the test every year. The “whisper test” was given by having a child walk to the classroom door, turn sideways, close one ear with a finger, and then repeat something which the teacher whispered. Mary turned her bad ear towards her teacher and pretended to cover her good ear. She knew that teachers would often say things like “The sky is blue,” or “What color are your shoes?” But on that day things were different. Surely, God put seven words in Mrs. Leonard’s mouth that changed Mary’s life forever. When the “whisper test” came, Mary heard the words: “I wish you were my little girl.”
39. The underlined word “jeers” in Paragraph 1 probably refers to .
A. some diseases B. some classmates
C. some teachers D. some unkind words
40. Why did Mary cheat in the hearing test every year?
A. Because she was not an honest girl.
B. Because she thought the test was useless.
C. Because she wanted to win first place in the test.
D. Because she didn’t want other kids to know she had hearing problems.
41. Which of the following words can best describe Mrs. Leonard?
A. Ambitious. B. Caring.
C. Aggressive. D. Good-looking.
42. What will the next paragraph probably talk about?
A. How the teacher’s words changed Mary’s life.
B. What Mary thought about the teacher’s words.
C. Why the teacher’s words were powerful.
D. Who cured Mary’s disease.

James Naismith was born in Ontario, Canada in 1861. As an athlete, Naismith was good at many sports, but the long Canadian winter kept him from playing outdoors.
Naismith moved to Massachusetts to teach physical education at a college. The winter weather there was no better than that of Ontario, but the school had a hall with moveable benches and a hardwood floor. Naismith created a game suited to the hall. The game encouraged teamwork (协作), and was given a name—basketball.
First played with nine members on each team, Naismith’s game quickly spread through the United States. But now it’s played with five members on each team. In 1898, the first professional basketball league was organized. In the next few years, new rules were designed to make sure that the game would be played in a friendly way.
Important technical changes to the game came early. One was the addition of nets to the baskets, which allowed the ball to fall through; earlier, a player had to climb a ladder (梯子) to get the ball from the wooden baskets. Another was the addition of a backboard to the basket, which was not for the shooter’s convenience, but kept fans of the defending team from handing out their arms into the basket to stop the opposing team’s shot.
Basketball traveled to France and England in 1893, to Germany in 1894, and to Japan in 1900. It became an official Olympic event at the 1936 Berlin Games. Other countries have developed strong teams in recent years. However, nowhere in basketball equals the United States, the game’s birthplace. Once limited to the long northerly winter, basketball’s calendar has grown to suit every season.
43. Naismith created basketball mainly because of .
A. the big hall in the school B. his love of basketball
C. the long cold winter D. the request from his students
44. Why was a backboard added to the basket?
A. To make players feel comfortable.
B. To prevent fans from disturbing the match.
C. To show the information about the match.
D. To protect fans from being hurt.
45. From the last paragraph, we can infer that .
A. other countries have better basketball teams than America
B. northerners in America don’t play basketball in winter
C. American basketball teams are stronger than other countries’
D. basketball is no longer popular among young people
46. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. The history of basketball
B. A great athlete—James Naismith
C. The rules of playing basketball
D. The popularity of basketball in America
D
“A penny saved is a penny earned.” This old saying calls attention to the wisdom of saving money. “Putting money away for a rainy day” is another way to talk about saving for the future.
People who hate to spend money are known as tightwads (吝啬鬼), while a spendthrift (花钱无度的人) is someone who spends wastefully. People like that are often said to spend money “like there’s no tomorrow”.
In the United States, people who want to start a savings account have different choices of where to put their money. These include banks and credit unions. Credit unions are organizations for people who have some kinds of connection. For example, the members might work for a university or a government department. Most credit unions are nonprofit organizations.
Credit unions, banks and other financial institutions pay interest on savings accounts. But the interest rates are low. Certificates of deposit (存款单) pay higher returns. With a certificate of deposit, or CD, a person agrees not to take back the money for a certain period of time. This term could be from a few months to several years. Longer terms and larger amounts pay higher interest. People can take back their money early but they have to suffer a loss in interest.
In a number of countries, people have been saving less over the years. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is a group of 34 countries. The OECD says in 1990, Americans had a family saving rate of 7%. This year, that rate is expected to be a little more than 2%. Families in many European countries have higher saving rates, such as Britain and Germany. However, Americans save more than families in Japan.
47. From the first paragraph we can infer that .
A. earning money is hard B. saving money is difficult
C. saving should be respected D. spending money is an art
48. Which of the following is true about the credit unions?
A. They pay higher interest than banks.
B. They provide better service than banks.
C. They can make great profits from their business.
D. Their members might work in the same company.
49. With a certificate of deposit, people can .
A. get higher returns
B. enjoy good service provided by the bank
C. freely take back their money anytime they want
D. put more money in the bank anytime they want
50. According to the last paragraph, who probably save the least?
A. Japanese families. B. American families.
C. British families. D. German families.

You probably love watching movies. They can be funny or sad. 51 There are so many possibilities and so many great movies to watch!
The making of a movie usually begins with a script (剧本) (written by a screenwriter). 52 The producer is the person who is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the film like budget and scheduling. The producer plans out how the project will be carried out and usually starts by hiring a director.
53 The director will usually identify themes or feelings that he or she wants the movie to convey to its audience and will then gather all the other people who will be needed, such as costume designers, makeup artists, special effects crew, set designers or location scouts, stuntmen, cameramen, cinematographers (who supervise and instruct the cameramen), and, of course, actors.
Next, shooting begins. The actual filming can be a slow process. Often a director will want to get several “takes” of a scene or moment and usually only a few minutes of the movie are finished in one day’s work. 54 So once filming is completed, the director must then work with editors to piece them all together, deciding which “takes” to use and adding in any special effects.
The entire process from acquiring the script to editing the scenes generally takes months or even years. 55 So it can be watched and enjoyed by people like you.
A. Scenes are also usually not shot in order.
B. The history of movies began in the late 1890s.
C. It gets purchased by a movie studio or a producer.
D. And they may be imaginative, inspiring, and so much more!
E. Once it’s ready, the finished movie is then sent to movie theatres.
F. In movies, the director’s job is to bring the script to life on camera.
G. After the movie has been edited, music is created according to the scenes.

Dear Mr. Wang,
I’m gad to learn that a reading-room will be built in our community. As a citizen, I’d like to give you my advice on how to design this building.
First of all, disabled people should have the same opportunities as other people, so the aisles between seats should be wide enough to allow wheelchairs to pass through. Secondly, the height of the desks can be adjusted. What’s more, the room should be equipped with computers so that readers can get more information and the latest knowledge on the Internet.
Thank you for reading my letter. I hope my suggestions will get your approval.
Yours,
Li Hua
