Three Japanese tourists in Australia found themselves in an embarrassing situation after their GPS system led them down the wrong path.
The three, who are students from Tokyo, set out to drive to North Stradbroke Island on the Australian coast on Thursday morning. They mapped out their path on their GPS system in advance. The road looked clear at low tide — but the map forgot to show the 9 miles of water and mud between the island and the mainland.
As the three tourists drove their rented Hyundai Getz into Moreton Bay, they found the GPS device guiding them into thick mud from an unfinished road. Passengers on passing ferries watched them in surprise. They wondered why they drove all the way there. “It told us we could drive down there,” Yuzu Noda, 21, told the local Bayside Bulletin. “It kept saying it would lead us to a road. But in the end, we got stuck. There’s lots of mud.”
Noda and his friends made it about 50 yards offshore before they realized they were in trouble. A tow truck driver eventually gave them a lift back to the mainland. The car was severely damaged. Though it was insured (投保), Noda and his friends will still have to pay about $1,500 for the part that was not covered.
The students will fly back home to Tokyo this weekend, but they said they plan to try a trip to the island again some time in the future. “We want to come back to Australia again,” Noda told the Bayside Bulletin. “Everyone is very nice here. We’ll be more careful next time. We don’t want to go back in disappointment (失望) again after all.”

B. had a terrible impression on the local people there
C. still want to visit the island some time in the future

Patrick, a 23-year-old gorilla (大猩猩), has been at the Dallas Zoo since 1995. He seems to love humans, but his attitude towards his fellow gorillas, especially females, has left much to be desired. So the zoo keepers have no choice but to send him to a new home.
Abandoned (抛弃) by his mother soon after he was born in 1990 at New York’s Bronx Zoo, Patrick spent the first few years of his life in Toronto, where he and another gorilla were brought up by a zoo keeper. Then in 1995, Patrick moved to his current home in Dallas, Texas.
Over the years, zoo workers have made several attempts to help him make friends with other gorillas, but the results have always been disappointing, especially when it came to females. His attitude towards the males has not been much better.
Thanks to his strange behavior, Patrick has been secluded from other gorillas and given his own habitat for the last few years. While he seems to be fine with that, the Dallas Zoo officials now need the space to bring in two new males.
The officials also believe that Patrick may be better served in his new home at the Riverbanks Zoo in South Carolina, because they have a special team that knows how to handle gorillas with behavior problems. Patrick will live in a room which is close to that of the zoo’s three other male gorillas, so that they can get to know each other. Over time, Patrick may even be allowed to play with them—that is, if he shows any signs of improving his attitude.
Although the gorillas in Dallas Zoo are probably not too sad seeing Patrick leave, the zoo keepers sure are.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory designed a human-like robot named Robo Sally.
Robo Sally has two long arms with human-like hands. She can use her fingers to pick up things and do most things that human hands can do. Each finger has a tiny motor and is able to lift a thing of 20 pounds. She sits on a metal base with wheels that allow her to move around.
Mike McLoughlin is the head of the laboratory’s Prosthetics Program (假肢项目). “The final purpose of the program is to develop prosthetic arms that can do all the complex movements that human arms can do,” he said.
It is a difficult job. Mr. McLoughlin says the arm has many small motors so as to enable it to do what a human arm can do. The fingers are especially difficult because they permit the hand to hold things. And everything has to fit into a space about the size of a human hand.
The next problem is to find out how to make the connection between the brain and the prosthetic arm. McLoughlin has made a breakthrough (突破) in that. Recently a spine-injured (脊柱受伤的) patient successfully controlled Robo Sally using her thoughts.
For search-and-rescue duties, Robo Sally will be operated by a human being far from the robot. The operator wears special glasses. The glasses permit the operator to see the robot’s hands, even though they are far away.
This kind of robots could be used in dull, dirty or dangerous situations where human finger movements are required. The technology is not ready for daily use, but researchers predict that within five years they will see some wonderful improvements.
47. Which of the following situations can Robo Sally not be used at present?
A. Search-and-rescue duties. B. Doing housework.
C. Dull and dirty work. D. Dangerous jobs.
48. What is special about Robo Sally’s hands?
A. They are more flexible than humans’ hands.
B. They can do whatever human hands can do.
C. They can do different things at the same times.
D. They can do many movements like human hands.
49. The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 5 refers to .
A. how the brain controls the prosthetic arms
B. what prosthetic arms can do
C. how to cure spine-injured patients
D. how to fit many things into a small space
50. Where can we probably find this text?
A. In an advertisement. B. In a research plan.
C. In a science magazine. D. In a book review.

Joseph F. Engelberger, who was born in New York City on July 26, 1925, is referred to as the “Father of Robotics”.
As an engineer, Engelberger set up Unimation in 1956, which was the world’s first robot company. In 1959, he designed the first robot that was widely used in industry.
