With the rapid development of science and technology, the ways of communication among people have changed a lot in the past years.
As we all know, in ancient times, people communicated with others who were far away only by writing letters. It took a very long time to get the message.
In the 19th century, telegraph was invented, but it was not widely used. The letter was still the commonest way at that time. In 1836, John Coker invented the first electromagnetic telegraph (电磁电报机) in the world, and then telegraph came into being and was popular. It was much faster than letters. Bringing great convenience to people.
As time goes by, telephones become increasingly widely used. Now, phones have been developed as mobile phones, fixed telephones, Internet telephones and other categories. They are important communication tools in modern information society.
In addition, network communication is popular as well. It is especially widely welcomed by the youth. A great number of people communicate with others on the Internet by using software (软件), such as QQ, Wechat, BBS and MMS. Using software is easy. A computer which is connected to the network is enough. In China, Wechat has become the most popular communication software nowadays. Wechat, known as Weixin in China, is a mobile phone text and voice messaging communication software which is developed by Tencent. People who make video calls can not only hear the sound, but also see the people they talk to.

How would you feel if you received a large amount of money all at once
That’s exactly what happened to Nkosikho Mbele, a worker at a gas station in South Africa. His sudden luck was brought about by an act of kindness he did for a young woman — Monet, a company manager.
One day, Monet stopped at the gas station to refuel(加油).But when Nkosikho was about to serve her, she realized she didn’t have any money or cards on her. She immediately tried to stop him. Knowing about her trouble, Nkosikho decided to pay her gas bill of about R100($7)to make sure that she could travel across the highway with enough gas.
“Madam. I’ll pay for you so that you won’t run out of gas on the road. Whenever you are near here again, you can just give me back the money,” Nkosikho said. As for him, the R100 was almost all he made in a day. He had to support a big family. He needed the money very much. He wasn’t even sure if Monet would come back to return his money, but he still volunteered to help her.
Several days later, Monet came back with his money and a box of chocolate. She was so thankful that she also posted their story on the Internet. Great changes took place. Nkosikho became famous in his town. Many people were moved by his act and offered to raise money for him. Nkosikho received around $24, 000, as much as about his salary(薪水)of eight years. Have you ever visited Longmen Grottoes(石窟) or Yungang Grottoes Around 1, 800 years ago, Chinese artists made grotto statues(雕像)in mountains. These statues have gone through earthquakes, floods and wars. In the 21st century, however, they are facing a new danger: tourism. Too many tourists go to visit those grottoes every year and this really does harm to the grotto statues. How
According to a study, the CO2 , that visitors breathe out has made the air more acidic(酸性的). Also, researchers have pointed out that visitors often bring in microorganisms(微生物). Even their body heat can increase the grottoes’ temperature. All of these things can harm the grotto statues.
Behaving badly can cause harm to the grotto statues as well. Too many visitors touch the grotto statues, and this causes their surfaces to change color.
When we visit grottoes, we can often see a sign saying “No Flash!” or “No Photos!”. This is because the strong light can be bad for the statues, especially those with color. The light can make it easy for them to lose their color.
To protect those ancient cultural treasures, recently China has asked the workers who take care of those grottoes to control the number of visitors. Tourists are also encouraged to book tickets on the Internet and stay away during busy hours. Every visitor should play a part in protecting those old grottoes, right

As a young child, I was pretty lazy when it came to doing chores. If my parents asked me to do something, I would do it — not a problem. But I always needed to be told to do things that I could easily see. That undoubtedly annoyed (惹恼) my parents.
Every Saturday afternoon, my mother drove me to another town for a piano lesson. During my half-hour lesson, she’d rush to the nearby market and buy a week’s food. Considering my mom drove me twelve miles there, twelve miles back, paid for my lesson, and bought me a candy, I should be thankful enough to help her bring the food into the house without being asked. But I didn’t.
With homework weighing heavily on my mind and with “me” still the center of my world, I generally just brought in a small bag and then ran to my room, shut the door and started doing my homework.
Gradually, my “not helping” became a bigger and bigger problem for me because what I learned at school made me realize that I was avoiding responsibility. I wanted to change.
So one Saturday I made a decision. Getting off the car, I didn’t go away directly but helped my mother. I’m sure Mom thanked me that day, but what I remember most is the valuable sense of satisfaction I felt after helping her. Unknown to her, I’d already decided to offer help every Saturday. From that day on, I really did.

Confucius was one of the greatest Chinese thinkers and educators. He lived long ago in China. He was born in 551 B.C.in the state of Lu. He grew up during a time of war and chaos (混乱). Early on, Confucius loved books and learning. He read all kinds of books about China. These books helped him think of ways that could make his governments be better. Confucius wanted to help people in need. He thought a moral (道德的) and fair society came from three parts—the education, the hard work and the honest language.
Confucius knew that schooling would be making people fair. But at that time, only nobles (贵族) could be educated, so he started a private school, he invited both nobles and farmers to learn. However, he had only one requirement for his students—They had to love learning.
He told his students that people should work hard to have a better life, the moral government should help everyone have better lives.
He told his students to speak out the honest language. One ruler asked Confucius how to find honest and hard-working workers. Confucius said, “Be honest and hard-working yourself.” Because he spoke his mind truthfully, many rulers didn’t like him. He thought he had not changed China before he died. If Confucius were alive today, he would be amazed that his honest language changed the world.
Confucius said, “Virtuous (有道德的) people are never lonely, they always attract virtuous neighbors.”, “Isn’t it a pleasure to have friends coming from afar ”, “Isn’t it a pleasure to study and practice what you have learned ”….These are just some of Confucius’s many famous ideas.
Confucius did not write down his ideas. Instead he talked about them. His followers later helped collect and wrote down some of his sayings in a book called《The Analects of Confucius》(《论语》). Today you can still read the book that is printed almost every year.

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind 《驭风男孩》 tells the true story of William Kamkwamba. He grew up in a small village in Malawi, Africa. He and his friends Geoffrey and Gilbert attended Wimbe Primary School and helped their families in the fields. William and Geoffrey had interest in radios and took them apart to understand the machinery inside. William looked forward to going to secondary school and taking science classes. He also began trying to understand how bicycle dynamos (发电机) work. They could light a bulb using the electricity produced by someone pedaling (踩踏板). He dreamed of how his family’s life would improve with electric power.
By December 2001, the corn in his village was nearly running out, and families were starving (挨饿). William had to leave school because there was no money for his education.
Finally, in March 2002, there was corn, and families could eat again. William visited the library at Wimbe Primary School. There, he found books on physics and engineering. From the books, William got the idea of building a wind mill (风车) to produce electricity. He began spending his days looking for old machinery parts. To the people in his village, William seemed to have gone crazy. But William, with the help of Gilbert and Geoffrey, built the wind mill. It worked! He invented a set of lights for his house and also found out how to charge (充电) cell phones. When some officials visited Wimbe Primary School, they noticed William’s wind mill. One helped spread the story of the boy with the talent for science across Malawi and the world. William went to a TED Conference in Tanzania. According to a research, more than 130 billion pounds of uneaten food goes to waste in Laura’s country each year. That is about 30% of the yearly food supply(供应). It’s very serious, right It is a sad fact, especially when you consider how many families and homeless people are in hunger.
When Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all every day, she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to give away uneaten food to homeless shelters(庇护所) in her community. In the past three years, the same project has spread to other schools and some fast food restaurants throughout the city. The project is called Feed & Find, and has already fed thousands of people in her city.
How does it work Through an app, Feed & Find matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the app to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project is then sent to pick it up and take it to a shelter.
Pretty cool, right It’s not surprising that people in other cities have got in touch with Laura, hoping that she could help develop similar projects for their communities.
Some people, however, have concerns about the safety of the uneaten food. They think such food may not be clean enough. Still, this food sharing project is a clever way to help solve the problem of food waste and it helps those in need.

So when the ship left England in December 1831, Darwin was on it. The research lasted almost five years. The Beagle studied the waters in the sea near South America. It also visited New Zealand, Australia and islands in the Pacific. Darwin saw many new plants and animals. He also collected all kinds of plants.
When he returned home, Darwin was warmly greeted by his families and many friends.
In 1842, Darwin went to live in Kent, where he continued his studies of the changes in nature. By 1859, Darwin had finished his famous book—The Origin of Species.
