My Olympic volunteering journey started last September. I was excited as I was myself a sports fan and my home country has not hosted a competition like this. It was a great chance for me to both watch and serve the Olympics.
After getting trained through the Internet and spending two weeks in quarantine (隔离), I began to volunteer inside the Wukesong Sports Center. The Center hosted ice hockey games for both men’s and women’s teams. My job was to guide the audience (观众) to their seats and answer their questions. I was wild with joy to be present and watch my first-ever Olympic games live, on the ice. All the games were interesting, and I watched them whenever my volunteering duties would allow.
In our free time, we had pleasant conversations. It was the best chance for us foreign students to learn more about the Chinese New Year celebrations, and this year, to celebrate it together with our Chinese friends. It was really a big festival. We had special Chinese dishes like dumplings, fish and spring rolls. I also tried to write Chinese characters.
I decided to make the most of the chance and introduce my African and Rwandan customs to other volunteers. I showed to them the real Africa that they had never seen on TV before. From geography to social life, I made them understand more about Africa by giving examples of my hometown. It was a great platform (平台) for us young people to share both our cultures and futures.
As an international volunteer for Beijing 2022, I was given a special experience to help others and more importantly, to learn about the spirit of the Winter Olympic Games. I’ll never forget it.
10.Which was one of the reasons why the writer volunteered in Beijing 2022
A.He was a fan of sports. B.He was free in winter.
C.He wanted to learn Chinese. D.He likes travelling around.
11.What did the writer’s duties as a volunteer include
A.Guiding the teams to their places. B.Cleaning the Center after the games.
C.Giving out food and water to the players. D.Answering questions from the audience.

A.The Chinese Spring Festival. B.The Beijing Winter Olympics.
C.The Wukesong Sports Centre. D.The Foreign Students’ Organization.
13.Why does the writer write the passage
A.To share his Olympic volunteering experiences.
B.To express the strong love for his home country.
C.To show the spirit of the Winter Olympic Games.
D.To spread African cultures to the rest of the world.
Smartphones are getting boring. The new models are either a bit faster or have better cameras, but they are basically no different from the ones already in our pockets. This is why scientists are hoping, and working for something new, something that will change our lives just as greatly as smartphones do. At the moment, the next invention might be smart glasses.
Just imagine. Instead of having to pick up your phone and look at the screen, all of the information you need simply appears just in front of you, in your glasses. Satellite navigation (导航) directions would appear right there on the road. And your smart glasses could guide you to the right shelf in the supermarket!
Smart glasses could also be used in industry. They could show engineers the instructions they need to fix things more quickly. A doctor could carry out a difficult operation, guided in real time by someone on the other side of the world.
This may sound impossible. But most of the technologies to invent them are already there. For example, one key technology is called AR, which can make digital 3D objects appear as if they are part of the real world. We’ve used it a lot on our video calls. Similarly, huge progress has been made in spatial audio. This is when a sound is made to give it a sense of place, like what you hear in an empty room. Some high-end earphones can already do that. Future glasses will of course need to recognize (识别) your voice to do tasks. This technology has been widely used in our daily life.
So, why aren’t we all wearing smart glasses yet So far, no one has invented a good way to send images (映像) of our world onto glasses. However, with the rapid development of technology, smart glasses could arrive much sooner than we think.
14.Why does the writer mention smartphones in Paragraph 1

A.Bored. B.Confident. C.Satisfied. D.Uncertain.
“To be a musician, it’s like fulfilling a part of your life that’s irreplaceable. It’s something that I love to do and get a satisfaction from it.”
Born in 1925 in Louisiana, Renald Richard’s memories of childhood are filled with music. At the age of six, Richard started piano lessons at home.
“I played partially by ear and I learned pieces on the piano, so I guess music was in my system.”
At the age of 13, Richard started lessons on the trumpet, and later played it in the high school band. When studying music at Xavier University of Louisiana, he played in clubs on the city’s famous Bourbon Street and also toured with many bands. While playing in Houston, Richard was invited by Ray Charles, a musician, to play trumpet in his band.
“First of all, to be chosen by Ray Charles was an honor to me. I was proud of that and a little nervous.”
In time, Richard became Charles’ bandleader. Ray Charles was strict, says Richard, and he wanted the same from band members.
“He was a perfectionist and he was rather strict about his music.” Ray Charles said.
Richard toured all over the South and West with Ray Charles. Sitting in the back seat of the car, Richard wrote the song Got a Woman for Charles.
It became Ray Charles’s first number one radio song. The song put Ray Charles on the map.
Over the years, Richard has written many other songs that have been used by artists including Joe Tuner, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and Elvis Presley to name a few.
Living now in Southern Florida, Richard is still active at the age of 97.
“I’m playing music mainly with the Marco Island Drummers and I’m playing with the Jazz Masters in Naples, so I do a lot of playing and I enjoy that.”
As you can see, Renald Richard’s musical days are by no means near an end.

What makes people gain weight This seems like a simple enough question to answer. If we eat a lot and don’t do enough exercise, we will become fat. However, the science behind weight problems is more complicated (复杂的) than we think.
As we know, what we eat greatly affects our weight. It is widely accepted that people have 100% control over what they eat and how much they eat. This, however, is only partly true. People form habits around food at a young age. You may hardly touch vegetables while overeating fried chicken. Meanwhile, the serving size and the background music can both affect how much we eat.
Our bodies themselves can decide whether we are more likely to gain weight or lose weight. Scientists have found that the more delicious the food is, the more excited our brains get. If we often have delicious food, over time, our brains will pared to people of normal weight, fat people feel more excited when they see delicious food.
Now you know why fat people often have a tough time losing weight. They may have tried very hard, but their bodies are working against their will.
Also, our bodies use a variety of hormones (激素) to tell our brains whether they are hungry or full. Ghrelin (食欲刺激素), for example, tells the brain that the body wants food. Leptin (瘦蛋白) meanwhile, tells the brain that it’s time to stop eating. Ghrelin and leptin help us to maintain a healthy weight. But sometimes, they may work improperly. As we get fatter, the levels of leptin in our bodies rise. Our brains are told not to eat all the time. In the end, they would no longer trust leptin and would stop responding to its “warnings”. When we start to lose weight, leptin levels drop. Our brains think we are hungry and make us find food in our refrigerators.
22.It can be learnt from the passage that how much we eat can be affected by ________.
①the amount of food we are served
②the music that is being played in the background
③the amount of weight we have recently gained or lost
④the habits around food we formed during our childhood
A.①②③ B.①②④ C.①③④ D.②③④
23.Compared to people of a healthy weight, fat people ________.
A.are more likely to overeat meat
B.are less likely to touch vegetables
C.get bored with the food they don’t like
D.feel more excited at the sight of delicious food
24.When ghrelin is working properly, it is responsible for _________.
A.making us search for food
B.helping us to lose weight
C.showing us how to gain weight
D.telling our brains it’s time to stop eating
25.After the levels of leptin have risen in the bodies of fat people, _________.
A.those people lose weight easily in a short time
B.the levels of ghrelin in their bodies slowly drop
C.those people change their lifelong habits around food
D.the brains of those people finally stop taking notice of leptin’s messages
Dear Joseph,
Today you are ten years old. Everyone says it, but where has the time gone
Life was quite hard after you were born, but I loved you with all of my heart. What I want to tell you now is how proud I am of the young man you have become.
You have overcome so many challenges and my heart is filled with pride each time—whether that be the continuing development of your speech and language, the way you progressed with your swimming, or your achievements in dance.
I recently asked a number of people who love you to think of a word they connect with you and I was surprised with their answers. Confident, kind, funny, lovely—to name but a few. I want you to remember these in years to come and if you ever have doubts about who you are.
You see, there is another word, autistic (患自闭症的), that people often use to describe you. If there is a time in the future when your understanding of the world around you has grown, I will explain to you what that actually means.
The way your brain works means that you see the world very differently from other people. You can’t often say what you feel when you become upset. The things in disorder always trouble you.
You like having people around you, but friendship doesn't come easy. I know you have many people who enjoy your company, but you haven’t quite yet worked out how to share those feelings.
At some point in the future, you will move to another school away from the people you have grown up with, but one where they can hopefully prepare you more for your adult life.
At last, I want to say, the most fitting word to describe you, out of all that were provided, was this—“perfect”—you are and always will be.
Love,
Mummy.

Many people dream of getting close to nature. But the thought of sleeping in a tent on the hard ground isn’t very popular. RVs offer a great choice for those who want to experience the outdoors while still enjoying many comforts from home.
An RV, or recreational vehicle (房车), is a motorhome or truck camper with sleeping accommodations inside. These traveling homes come in different sizes, shapes and prices. From nearly 14-meter motorhomes that sleep up to 10 people to campers that sleep one or two, choices vary greatly. Therefore, it is important that anyone wishing to rent or buy one reviews their choices.
According to a 2020 report, RV companies reported growth for eight straight years, increasing by 200 percent during that time. One of the biggest reasons for that growth is the fans of RVs, especially younger people. Plus, RV parks with lots of conveniences (便利设施) including free Wi-Fi, free breakfast, swimming pools are popping up everywhere.
Perhaps one of the greatest rewards for becoming an RVer is the RV community itself. Campers are usually friendly people with welcoming attitudes and a common love of the outdoors. In an RV park, as you share stories around the fire at night, it’s easy to make lasting friendship.
Another great reason to try RVing is the fact that it’s about 60 percent cheaper than a traditional vacation. You’ll appreciate (感激) all those savings on your next road trip while knowing that your home is wherever you park it.

A special mom and her two babies took a trip. They were driven a few miles from a breeding center (繁育中心) in northeastern Argentina to a 1.7 million-acre nature reserve called Gran Iberá Park. There the three jaguars (美洲豹) were released into the wild.
Their release was the first reintroduction of jaguars in that part of Argentina since the species (物种) almost died out there 70 years ago. Scientists hope they can turn things around for this important apex predator (顶级掠食者). Only 200 to 300 jaguars remain in the country.
“That is the highest level of protection that can be given in Argentina,” says Sebastián Di Martino. He’s the conservation director for Rewilding Argentina, which is one of the organizations helping to restore jaguar populations.
The jaguars’ journey started in 2018 when the park was built in the lberá Wetlands. Several thousand jaguars once lived there, along with other important species. But the jaguars’ fur was valuable, so people hunted them. Then farmers cleared the land they lived on. With the jaguars gone, the ecosystem (生态系统) was out of balance.
“In the absence of this species, ecosystems stop working well and may even collapse,” Di Martino says. “The main food of the jaguar is the capybara (水豚) and the caiman (凯门鳄). They are very abundant because of the absence of the jaguar, which causes imbalances in the ecosystem.”
The park was the first step to give jaguars a place to live. Then they needed to breed. A female named Mariua mated with a male jaguar from Brazil. Mariua then gave birth to the two baby jaguars.
It sounds simple, but the reality is more complicated. Di Martino said that jaguars born at breeding centers have to learn how to hunt and must not become used to humans. Otherwise, they will not have success in the wild.
The people who work at the breeding center stay out of sight. They use video cameras to watch the jaguars from several miles away. “We provide live prey for them without them realizing it comes from people,” Di Martino said.
Mariua wears a radio collar so researchers can track her and her babies, Karai and Porǎ. “So far, so good. She’s been hunting capybaras and wild pigs and is raising her babies very well,” Di Martino says.
34.From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that ________.
A.the jaguar is only found in Gran Iberá Park B.the jaguar is taught to hunt by humans
C.the jaguar is hunted by many other animals D.the jaguar is considered as a rare species
35.What does the underlined word “abundant” mean in this passage

C.introduce a way of training jaguars D.explain the method of rewilding jaguars
If sticking with an exercise habit is a challenge for you, there may be an app for that. According to a University of Pennsylvania test, smartphone games help people become more active in taking exercise.
In the test, players were divided into three groups. Each group was asked to take part in one of three versions(版本)of an exercise game that recorded how many steps they took each week. The first version placed the players in competition with others. In the second version, the players worked as a group to get points. In the third, the players won points on their own, but they had to invite a friend or family member to be their supporter(支持者). This person received an e-mail each week reporting on the player’s score in the game in order to help cheer him or her on.
On the whole, all three groups had more steps than usual. And it is interesting to find that certain versions of the game worked better for people with different personalities(个性). For example, players who were more active and confident to go after their dreams would probably collect more steps by playing the competitive (the first) version. Compared with these active players, the shy or quiet players did well in all three versions, whether it was competitive, collaborative or supportive. However. those who did not pay much attention to their health and safety were not helped by the game at all.
Not all of us can get help, but exercise games do work—and work especially well what you keep your personality in mind as you choose from so many apps.
38.The underlined word “that” in Paragraph 1 refers to ________.
A.choosing a kind of sports B.facing a hard problem
C.keeping a habit of exercise D.plying a smartphone game
39.According to the writer, exercise games may work best on those who ________.
A.enjoy competing for their dreams B.work together with their supporters
C.care a lot about their health and safety D.match the game with their personalities
40.Why does the writer share the results of test in the passage
A.To introduce an app about exercising habits.
B.To give advice on playing smartphone games.
C.To encourage people to choose proper exercise apps.
D.To make people think more about their personalities.
The natural world is colorful with humans, plants and animals showing different colors.
Human skin can be many different colors and it changes with the sun, our feelings or our health for example. This is because of pigments(色素), which reflect light and make what the eye sees as colors. So, when we feel excited or angry, our heart can send more blood to the face and the pigments in the skin become red. This is why we have the expression that someone “sees red” when they are angry.
Plants also have pigments. Color is important for them to live on. The bright colors of flowers catch the attention of insects(昆虫), which then carry their pollen(花粉) from one flower to another. Bees can see colors we cannot, and they follow these to the inside of the flower. Without bees visiting flowers in this way, many plants would die out.
Animals also use color for their own need. They protect themselves with different colors so as not to be seen by predators. The snowshoe hare for example, a type of wild rabbit, changes color with seasons for this reason. During summer it is a brown color, and in winter it is white so that it can hide in the snow. However, some animals use color as a warning to make predators stay away. Bright colors such as yellow and red are often used in this way. Nature, however, is very clever, and predators also use colors to attract(吸引) the animals they feed on.
So, we can see that there may be many different reasons and uses for colors in the natural world. Some uses of color in nature remain unknown, but one thing is for sure, color not only makes our planet beautiful but it is also necessary for our planet to live on.
41.Paragraph 2 mainly tells us that ________ is/are the cause that makes human skin change color.
A.feelings B.pigments C.blood D.sunshine
42.According to Paragraph 3, plants can use ________ to attract insects.
A.leaves B.fruits C.pollen D.color
43.The underlined word “predators” in Paragraph 4 refers to animals which ________.
A.hide in secret places B.kill other animals for food
C.change color with the sun D.protect themselves from danger
44.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To describe animals’ ways of life. B.To encourage us to study color in nature.
C.To introduce the uses of colors for life on earth. D.To explain the importance of protecting our planet.
Ludwick Marishane, a South African, was with his friends in Limpopo when they started talking about inventing something to put on your skin(皮肤) so you don’t have to take a bath. Ludwick thought that this was a great idea. He did some research on the Internet, and he found some surprising facts.
About 2,500,000,000 people around the world haven’t got clean water. This is a huge problem because dirty water can create illnesses. One of them’ is trachoma: 8,000,000 people all over the world get trachoma every year. They wash their faces with dirty water, get ill and go blind. To stop trachoma, people don’t have to receive expensive medical care. They have to wash their faces with clean water. That’s it.
Ludwick started thinking. He wanted to make something to help people in parts of the world where it’s difficult to find clean water. He did more research on the Internet, and he did more thinking. Ludwick had a plan. He wanted to make a gel(凝胶)for people to put on their skin, so they don’t have to take a bath. When he was at university, he never stopped thinking about his invention. He started to talk to other people about it, and three years later the dream came true. He made the gel and called it “Dry Bath”.
Ludwick is the winner of lots of prizes. People call him “one of the brightest young men in the world”. He is happy about his success. Dry Bath is helping people to be healthy. And Dry Bath also helps to save water. That’s important in many parts of the world, where it’s difficult to find clean water. Now he wants to invent other things and also wants to help other young people to become inventors.
45.Trachoma is a kind of illness that may make people ________.
A.feel hungry B.feel thirsty C.become blind D.become sleepy
