What is time Is it a thing to be saved or spent or wasted, like money Or is it something we have no control over, like the weather Is it the same all over the world That’s an easy question. A minute is 60 seconds, an hour is 60 minutes, and so forth. Well, maybe. But in America, “Time is money.”
Because Americans believe time is a limited resource, they try to keep and manage it. People in the US often attend meetings or read books on time management. It seems that they all want to organize their time better. People try their best to press more life out of their time.
To Americans, being on time is a way of showing respect for other people’s time. Being more than 10 minutes late usually calls for an apology and an explanation. People who are running late often call ahead to let others know that they can’t be on time. Of course, the less formal (正式的), the less important it is to be exactly on time. At informal get-togethers, for example.
American lifestyles show how much people respect the time of others. When people plan an event, they often set the time days or weeks before it. Once the time is fixed, it is almost impossible to change it. If people want to come to your house for a friendly visit, people seldom call others late at night for fear they might be in bed. The time may be different, but most people think twice about calling after 10: 00 pm.
Even Americans would agree that no one can master time. Time, like money, slips all too easily through our fingers. And time is very hard to predict. However, time is one of life’s most valuable gifts.

Live-streaming (直播) has become very popular in China. Viewers can interact (互动) with hosts by messaging them, or sending them tips.
However, some children are spending too much money on live-steam platforms. Earlier this year, a 17-year-old boy in Jingmen, sent tips that added up to 150, 000 yuan to a host. That sum of money was his parents’ life savings.
To prevent things like this from happening again, the National Radio and Television Administration introduced a new regulation (规定) on Nov. 23 to better manage live-streaming services.
The regulation bans children from tipping or sending gifts to live-stream hosts and performers. It also requires people to register (注册) on live-streaming sites with their real names.
This new regulation has been welcomed by parents. According to Legal Daily, about one-fifth of live-stream viewers were children.
“Online shows and live-streaming have become so popular. I always feel worried that my son might become addicted to (沉迷于) them or do something that is harmful to his growth,” said Wang Haifeng.
In addition, there are some other measures to help manage live-streaming services. For example, live-streaming platforms will be required to put a limit on how much money people can send to live-streamers. Once the limit is reached, viewers will not be able to send gifts or tips.
Other regulations include stopping live-streaming platforms from encouraging viewers to send gifts or tips. Any host who is found doing this will be added to blacklist, China Daily reported.

In 1955, polio broke out in Nantong, Jiangsu Province. It paralyzed(使瘫痪)1,680 people, mostly children aged below seven. It spread to neighboring areas and resulted in 466 deaths. Gu was asked to lead polio research in 1957. “At that time the only way to prevent polio was to invent a vaccine (疫苗),” said Gu.
In 1959, Gu succeeded in developing the first polio live vaccine. Later, he developed the “sugar-coated pill” vaccine in the early 1960s. It not only tasted better but was more affordable and easier to keep. In order to test the vaccine, Gu himself tried the vaccine and later his one-month-old son was vaccinated. This inspired his team to vaccinate their kids. They became the first group of people in China to try a polio vaccine. “If we don’t believe in what we produce, how can others believe in it ” said Gu.
Gradually, the sugar-coated polio vaccine was made available in China. It saved millions of people, especially kids, from being disabled. In 2000, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that China was already a polio-free country. “We feel satisfied. China’s first panda-themed tourist train left Chengdu Railway Station for Zunyi, Guizhou Province on March 28th.
The three-day trip costs 1,280 yuan, including food, accommodation (住宿) and tickets to places of interest in Guizhou.
Serving as a mobile star-rated hotel, the train is decorated with giant panda images both inside and outside and can accommodate 252 passengers. It has 8 sleeping cars, a dining car and an entertainment car. The sleeping cars have rooms for two or four passengers, and each room has a washroom with a toilet and a shower. We humans can express emotions by telling others how we feel, but what about animals How can we tell whether they experience emotions and, if they do, which ones Over the past 20 years, researchers have made great progress in this field.
It’s very hard for us to assess (评估) emotions in animals, because they cannot tell us how they feel. However, when emotional things happen, they cause changes in several biological processes.
The most easily detectable reaction (反应) of an animal to an event is how it changes its behaviour. Humans often change expressions on their faces and gestures depending on whether we experience a pleasant event or not. Animals show these characteristic facial expressions as well. For example, changes in the ear position or the amount of the white of the eyes can show different levels of pain or fear in animals. It is important to remember that the facial expressions of animals usually look different than those of humans—joy might not be shown by a smile, while sadness may not be shown with tears.
Another example of animal behaviour that is connected to emotions is vocalizations (发声), which can show stress in many animals. We know this is true for humans, too. Imagine you are singing a song in front of many people;your voice might get shaky (颤抖) if you are nervous. Researchers have found that the vocalizations of pigs, goats and cows also change and get less harmonious (和谐的) when these animals are under stress, for example when they are isolated from the group.
It seems that animals react to their environments much as humans do. So, we can infer, with quite some confidence, that animals can feel emotions. This might encourage us to rethink the environments in which we keep the animals that are under our care—on farm, in zoos or in our houses. If we can better understand how animals react to their environments, we can improve these environments as well as human-animal relationships.

A sea turtle(乌龟)swims through the water and sees a white object floating(漂浮). “Yum!” it thinks. “A jellyfish!”, the turtle eats it as its dinner. But the object isn’t a jellyfish﹣it’s a plastic bag that could make the sea turtle sick. This sea creature isn’t alone: Over 700 kinds of the sea creatures have been reported to have eaten plastic or been trapped(陷入困境)in plastic. Scientists think that the amount(数量)of plastic in the ocean might triple(三倍)by 2050. But by understanding it and taking action, you can help stop that from happening.
WHAT’S THE PROBLEM WITH PLASTIC
First, let’s get real: Not all plastic is bad. Many medical supplies made with plastic save lives. Plastic water bottles can bring clean drinking water to people who don’t have it, and plastic straws(吸管)can help people with disabilities drink. The problem is that most of us use and then throw away more plastic than we need: things like plastic bags, drink bottles, straws and so on. This kind of plastic that’s used only once before being thrown away is called single-use plastic, and it makes up more than 40 percent of all plastic rubbish.
WHERE DOES THE PLASTIC GO
Scientists think that 8.8 million tons of plastic winds up in the ocean every year. How does it get into the sea Plastic left on the ground as litter often blows into creeks(小溪)and rivers, finally ending up in the ocean. And because plastic doesn’t decompose(分解), so it stays in the ocean forever.
WHAT CAN WE DO ABOUT IT
In fact, we can do a lot to help keep Earth clean! For example, we can take a clothing bag to go slopping instead of plastic one. Buy less takeaway food, use less plastic forks and bowls. If we pull together, our choices can help save animals and the ocean they live in.

Although people everywhere seem to enjoy drinking coffee, they don’t all have the same coffee culture. In Europe, for example, coffee shops are common places for people to meet friends and to talk while they drink coffee. On the other hand, places like this were not as common in North America in the past. Instead, people in North America liked to drink coffee in their homes with friends. The coffee culture in the USA changed when Starbucks(星巴克) coffee shops spread across the country.
The first Starbucks coffee shop opened in 1971 in downtown Seattle, Washington, in the USA.It was a small coffee shop that cooked its own coffee beans. The coffee shop’s business did well, and by 1981 there were three Starbucks stores in Seattle.
Things really began to change for the company in 1981. That year, Howard Schultz met the three men who ran Starbucks. Schultz worked in New York for a company that made kitchen equipment. He noticed that Starbucks ordered a large number of special coffee makers, which caused his great interest. Schultz went to Seattle to see what Starbucks did. In 1982, the original Starbucks owners hired Schultz as the company’s head of marketing(市场营销).
In 1983, Schultz traveled to Italy. The special environment of the espresso(浓咖啡) bars there caught his eyes. Back in the USA, Schultz created an environment for Starbucks coffee shops that was comfortable and relaxing, and customers everywhere seemed to like it. Starbucks began opening more stores across the USA.Then the company opened coffee shops in other countries as well. Today, there are more than 16, 000 Starbucks coffee shops all over the world.
However, that does not mean Starbucks has not had problems. In fact, many Starbucks stores have been closed over the past few years. On the one hand, this is because there were too many coffee shops competing for business in one small area. On the other hand, stores in some countries were closed because the coffee culture there did not match with the “feel the same everywhere” environment offered by Starbucks.
37.According to the passage, which is the right order for the following sentences
a. Schultz helped to make Starbucks a huge coffee company.

A.Because there were too many coffee shops in one place.
B.Because the style of the coffee stores seems the same.
C.Because the coffee in these places was too expensive.
40.Which of the following shows the right structure of the passage (P=Paragraph )
A. B. C.
Historically, most cars have run on gasoline(汽油), but that may change in the future: cars can also run on other liquid fuels(液体燃料) and electricity.
Gasoline is from oil. The energy in gasoline comes from hydrocarbons(碳氢化合物). Gasoline provides great power for cars. However, it causes environmental problems, like air pollution and temperature rise. So gasoline can’t be the best fuel.
Another choice is electricity. Electricity cars can be as efficient(效能好的) as cars using gasoline, and they produce less pollution. But electric cars themselves are more expensive. Good news is that the cost has been lower and there are more and more places for the cars to get electricity ever since 2010.
The other choices are other liquid fuels. Many of these can be stored in the same places as gasoline, and used in the same cars. They can also be friendly to the environment.
One way to make such fuels is to get CO2 from the air and put it in water. Through chemical reaction, hydrocarbons can be created. However, these fuels take up more space.
Another way is to make such fuels from plants which take in carbon from the air. These fuels are greener in use. But not all of them can be as efficient as gasoline.
For a fuel to be the best, people have to be able to afford it. Unluckily, almost every green technology is more expensive than that of using gasoline. Governments and car producers are doing everything they can to cut down the costs. In the end, the best fuel will be both affordable for car users and green for our planet.

“That Susan is so funny..., I need to bring the car to the wash tomorrow..., why is this person being so loud...here comes the Sun, doo-doo-doo.” We often find ourselves in an endless thought loop(思考圈). And every so often, we try to stop this endless flow(流动) of thoughts by telling ourselves to just stop thinking. But do we or can we ever really stop thinking
It depends on your definition(定义) of “thinking”, according to Michael Halassa, a researcher at MIT, the US. We mainly go through each day in one of the two situations—we either realize that we’re thinking or we don’t. Our brains won’t stop thinking completely until we die.
“The brain never stops thinking in a way. Most thoughts are actually in the background and we don’t notice them. And there’s no real way to stop thinking.” Halassa said.
You can compare this to how a computer works. Even when you aren’t using your computer while it’s turned on, it is still running operations “in the background”. Your computer, much like your brain, is always “thinking”, even if you’re not actively using it.
“If you see a familiar face in a crowd and think you know him, you might not be able to come up with how you know him right away.” Halassa said. “But maybe hours later, you’ll suddenly remember. That’s a result of your brain thinking in the background.” he said.
“We even make decisions mostly unconsciously or without realizing them. For example, some of this background “thinking” results in what we call a gut feeling(直觉)”, Halassa said. “During our brain’s decision—making process, sometimes we create a story to explain the decision—sometimes it’s accurate(精确的), sometimes it’s not”, he added.
Even sitting here reading this, thinking about thinking is sending messages across a chain of neurons(神经元) in the brain. So if we somehow manage to stop ourselves from “thinking”, the brain won’t stop working. It will continue to have thoughts—we just won’t realize them.

Terrible weather events are harming the planet, and experts warn of even greater results to come. The sea ice loss and the Arctic ice melting (融化) caused by climate (气候) change have increased much in the last ten years. So they have brought down the number of polar bears and seals while polar bears depend on sea ice for hunting seals.

No one knows who invented the button(扣子). It might have appeared as early as 2,000 BC.When it first started, it was just something beautiful sewn(缝上) onto your clothes. What is more important than the button is the buttonhole(扣眼). About 3,000 years later, someone finally invented the buttonhole, and buttons were suddenly useful.
Before buttons, clothes were bigger—they had no fixed shapes. Because of the buttonhole, the fashion moved closer to the body when we discovered uses for the button. It was the very way to make clothes fit well for the body. People feel safer like it’s never going to open.
The size of the button depends on its use. Shirt buttons are generally small, and they are close to each other, while coat buttons are larger and farther apart. For example, the standard buttons of men’s shirts are 10.16 mm and of suit jackets are 20.32 mm.
In modern clothing and fashion design, buttons are mostly made of plastic but also may be made of metal or wood. Buttons can also be used on wallets and bags. They can be shown as examples of works of art.
A button can be used for a long time. It’s one of the most lasting designs in history, because it really works to make people feel safer. Zippers easily break and are hard to fix. However, if a button breaks, you just need to sew another on. And you can sew more buttons if needed.
The pattern of a button hasn’t changed much since the Middle Ages. It’s not only one of the most useful inventions, but it plays an important role in the development of clothes. Up to now, we can still see its influence on the clothes design. If you’re wearing the clothes with buttons, take a look at the position of buttons on it. If you’re a man, the buttons would likely be on the right side, but for a woman, the buttons are usually found on the left.
57.Buttons were suddenly useful ________.

In the past, it was difficult to track(追踪) those criminals. ___85___ Even if they were caught, most of them didn’t know where tusks came from exactly. A few years ago, scientists led by Dr.Samuel Wasser at an American university worked out a new way to solve this problem. Using elephants’ poop(粪便), they built a list of the DNA of almost all of the elephants in Africa. When tusks are found in another country, DNA tests can show where they come from.
In 2018, Dr. Wasser and his team used DNA to match two tusks found in different shipments(运送的货物), showing that they came from the same elephant. ___86___ This diseovery provided information about the way the criminals worked and showed the ports they often used.
___87___ So Dr. Wasser came up with a way of increasing the chance of matching tusks. He began looking at family DNA.There are enough similarities between parents and children and sisters and brothers to allow them to be matched through DNA.
___88___ They took DNA samples from 4,320 tusks found in 49 different shipments between 2002 and 2019. They found about 600 matches among the tusks. The matches told the scientists a lot about what was happening to the elephants. Besides, the scientists also learned that there were only a few criminal groups that kept going back to the same areas to get more tusks. The study can also help them track how the ports used by the criminals have changed over time.
Dr. Wasser is hopeful that this method of using family DNA to track poached(被偷猎的)wildlife will soon help protect other kinds of animals and break up more criminal groups.
