When she first started learning about the climate change from one of her elders,Fawn Sharp was invited on a helicopter flight over the Olympic Mountains to survey the Mount Anderson glacier. But the glacier was gone, melted by the warming climate.Sharp had a deep sense of loss when she discovered the glacier wasn’t there anymore.
Loss is a growing issue for people working and living on the front lines of climate change. And that gave Jennifer Wren Atkinson,a full-time lecturer at the University of Washington Bothell,US,an idea for a class.
This term, she taught students on the Bothell campus about the emotional burdens of environmental studies. She used the experiences of Native American tribes(部落),scientists and activists, and asked her 24 students to face the reality that there is no easy fix—that “this is such an intractable problem that they’re going to be dealing with it for the rest of their lives.”
Student Cody Dillon used to be a climate science skeptic(怀疑论者).Then he did his own reading and research, and changed his mind.
Dillon wasn’t going into environmental work—he was a computer-science major.Yet,the potential for a worldwide environmental catastrophe seemed so real to him five years ago that he quit his job and became a full-time volunteer for an environmental group that worked on restoration(恢复) projects.
Six months into the work,he decided that Atkinson’s class was just what he was looking for—a place where he could discuss his concerns about a changing climate.
Atkinson said she hoped the class helped her students prepare themselves for the amount of environmental loss that will happen over their lifetimes.
“We are already changing the planet—so many species are going to be lost, displaced or massively impacted,” she said.“The future isn’t going to be what they imagined.”
24.Why did the author mention the case of Fawn Sharp
A.To lay a basis for Fawn Sharp’s further research.
B.To prove Fawn Sharp’s work is similar to Atkinson’s.
C.To lead into the issue of loss caused by climate change.
D.To show scientists’ concern about the Mount Anderson glacier.
25.What’s the main purpose of Atkinson’s class
A.To explore how different people deal with climate change.
B.To get students more concerned about the environmental issue.
C.To find solutions to the environmental issue of Olympic Mountains.
D.To teach students how to conduct research about environment.
26.Which of the following words best explains “intractable” underlined in Paragraph 3
A.Simple. B.Difficult.
C.Common. D.Interesting.
27.How did Atkinson’s class influence Dillon
A.It made him work as a part-time volunteer for restoration projects.
B.It made him realize a planet-wide climate disaster would happen.
C.It encouraged him to be more involved in environmental protection.
D.It discouraged him to work on restoration projects for the environment.

California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s,according to a study to be published Tuesday and climate change seems to be a major factor (因素).
The number of trees larger than two feet across has declined by 50 percent on more than 46,000 square miles of California forests, the new study finds. No area was spared or unaffected, from the foggy northern coast to the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the San Gabriels above Los Angeles. In the Sierra high country, the number of big trees has fallen by more than 55 percent;in parts of southern California the decline was nearly 75 percent.
Many factors contributed to the decline, said Patrick McIntyre,an ecologist who was the lead author of the study.Woodcutters targeted big trees.Housing development pushed into the woods.Aggressive wildfire control has left California forests crowded with small trees that compete with big trees for resources (资源).
But in comparing a study of California forests done in the 1920s and 1930s with another one between 2001 and 2010,McIntyre and his colleagues documented a widespread death of big trees that was evident even in wildlands protected from woodcutting or development.
The loss of big trees was greatest in areas where trees had suffered the greatest water shortage. The researchers figured out water stress with a computer model that calculated how much water trees were getting in comparison with how much they needed, taking into account such things as rainfall, air temperature, dampness of soil, and the timing of snowmelt (融雪).
Since the 1930s,McIntyre said, the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures, which cause trees to lose more water to the air,and earlier snowmelt, which reduces the water supply available to trees during the dry season.
28.What is the second paragraph mainly about
A.The seriousness of big-tree loss in California.
B.The increasing variety of California big trees.
C.The distribution of big trees in California forests.
D.The influence of farming on big trees in California.
29.Which of the following is well-intentioned but may be bad for big trees
A.Ecological studies of forests.
B.Banning woodcutting.
C.Limiting housing development.
D.Fire control measures.
30.What is a major cause of the water shortage according to McIntyre
A.Inadequate snowmelt. B.A longer dry season.
C.A warmer climate. D.Dampness of the air.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text
A.California’s Forests:Where Have All the Big Trees Gone
B.Cutting of Big Trees to Be Prohibited in California Soon
C.Why Are the Big Trees Important to California Forests
D.Patrick McIntyre:Grow More Big Trees in California
D
City trees grow faster and die younger than trees in rural forestry,a new study finds.Over their lifetimes, then, urban trees will likely absorb less CO2 from the air than forest trees.
As we all know, the earth would be freezing or burning hot without CO2.However,CO2 is a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps energy from the sun as heat. That makes temperatures near the ground rise.Human activities, especially the widespread burning of fossil (化石) fuels, have been sending extra greenhouse gases into the air. This has led to a rise in average temperatures across the globe.
Studies had shown forests readily absorb CO2,but there hadn’t been much data on whether city trees grow, die and absorb CO2 at the same rate as forest trees do.So some researchers decided to find out.
To figure out how quickly trees were growing, researchers tracked their diameters (the width of their trunks) between 2005 and 2014.A tree’s diameter increases as it grows, just as a person’s waist size increases as they gain weight.About half the weight of a tree is carbon, research has shown. Most of the rest is water.Over the nine years’ tracking, the researchers found city trees absorbed four times as much carbon from the air as forest trees. However, they were twice as likely to die.So over the lifetime of each type of tree, forest trees actually absorbed more CO2.
City trees grew faster because they had less competition for light from their neighbors. In a forest, trees tend to grow close together, shading their neighbors.Street trees also benefit from higher levels of nitrogen (氮) in rainwater.Nitrogen helps plants grow.Waste gases from gas-burning cars also contain nitrogen, thus enriching city air with nitrogen.Later, rainwater may wash much of it to the ground. Some street trees may also have better access to water than trees in the country because the underground water pipes can leak.
32.What can be known about CO2 from Paragraph 2
A.It is one of the side effects of greenhouses.
B.It greatly accelerates the process of global warming.
C.It results from the widespread burning of fossil fuels.
D.It prevents the earth from becoming unsuitable to live on.
33.Why did researchers track the diameters of trees
A.To know about their growth rates.
B.To find out how much they weigh.
C.To check whether they were healthy.
D.To assess the carbon amounts in them.
34.What advantage do city trees have over forest trees
A.They are more likely to access growth promoters.
B.They can enjoy more water coming from the air.
C.They can enjoy more shade from neighbors.
D.They are better at competing for light.
35.What will probably be talked about if the passage is continued
A.How urban trees can live longer.
B.Why city living makes trees die young.
C.How trees respond to dry soil conditions.
D.Why faster-growing trees absorb more CO2.

The Hotel Wake-up Call Gets Personal
Here’s a wake-up call:The hotel front desk will do one better than ringing your phone in the morning. They’ll send an actual human being to your room.Don’t worry. They won’t come in and kiss you good morning.__36__
Never mind that most travelers nowadays have smart phones with built-in alarm clocks.__37__ Here are some examples. At the Wolcott Hotel,if a wake-up call is unanswered, they will send an employee to your door.At Las Ventanas al Paraiso,an employee shows up at your room to wake you up with tea, coffee and breakfast bread. At the Mandarin Oriental,a person rather than an automated system will call to wake you up.__38__
Hotels have always taken the wake-up call seriously.__39__ If you don’t get your call within five minutes of the requested time, you won’t have to pay for your room.Travelers, too, still want to have an option of a wake-up call.A study of 285 guests at Crown Plaza found that 53% considered a wake-up call very important.
__40__ In the late 1980s,hotels turned to automated systems. Then all you’d get was a ring and silence. In the ever-competitive race for loyal customers, however, many hotels are now getting creative with the wake-up call. Some hotels even have recordings of celebrity voices. And more hotels will go back to the old in-person system of wake-up calls.
A.But they might bring you coffee.
B.If you don’t answer,you’ll get a wake-up knock.
C.Crown Plaza,for instance,has a wake-up call guarantee.
D.But the wake-up call became less personal over the years.
E.The hotel gets 15 to 30 requests for wake-up calls each day.
F.The human wake-up call is a way to personalize a guest’s stay.
G.Some guests sleep through the call, while others turn their phone ringers off.

It was somewhere between spring and summer,my mom and I were driving through the countryside.Back then,I was 13 years old,and always felt unhappy with mom.But little did I know that this trip was going to be a special one.
A pot of flowers sat in the back seat, whose heavenly scent filled the car.
Suddenly,in the middle of nowhere,my mom pulled over.“What are you doing?”I cried, fearing that the car had broken down and we’d be stuck there,so far from home. But that wasn’t the case.My mom hopped out of the car, grabbing the flowers from the back seat.“It’ll just be a minute,”she called back through the open windows.
My eyes impatiently skimmed the edge of the road before settling on a little sign showing that it was a nursing home.I looked back to the building, somewhat annoyed,as my mom reappeared—empty-handed.
Before she started the car, curiosity drove me to ask,“Do you know someone there?”She shook her head.“Then what did you do with the flowers?”She smiled slightly,“I gave them to the receptionist.”“What?”She laughed at my confusion.“I told the receptionist to give the flowers to whoever needed them, especially who hasn’t gotten any in a while.”
I kept silent for a moment. Not long after we continued our driving,I spoke again,“Did you leave your name?”To this she answered instantly,“No.Leaving flowers there for someone who will appreciate them makes me feel good, which is enough of a thank for me.”
Suddenly, still thinking about mom’s deeds,I heard something burst loudly. It was our car that broke down! Nothing could be worse, because neither my mom nor I understood how to repair it,and we didn’t know where the garage was.It also seemed impossible to wait for any passer-by,since we had seen so few along the way.

I know a man who has a coin collection worth $25,000.He is very happy about his purchase and thinks the price is reasonable. On the other hand,my youngest brother collects matchboxes. He has almost 600 of them but I doubt if they are worth any money. However,to my brother they are extremely valuable.Nothing makes him happier than to find a new matchbox for his collection.
That is what a hobby means,I guess. It’s something we like to do in our spare time simply for fun.The value in dollars is not important. We do it for the pleasure it gives us.

根据上文可知,Atkinson用美洲土著部落、科学家以及积极分子们的经历让她的24个学生面对没有简单的解决方法这个事实,并结合该句“this is such an intractable problem that they’re going to be dealing with it for the rest of their lives”可知,这是一个如此困难的问题以至于学生们将用他们的余生来解决它,故选B。
根据倒数第三段“Six months into the work...discuss his concerns about a changing climate.”
C
根据文章最后一段中的“...the biggest factors driving up water stress in the state have been rising temperatures...”
California has lost half its big trees since the 1930s。
根据文章第二段中的“the earth would be freezing or burning hot without CO2”可知,如果没有二氧化碳,地球将会极冷或极热。
33.Why did researchers track the diameters of trees
A.To know about their growth rates.
B.To find out how much they weigh.
C.To check whether they were healthy.
D.To assess the carbon amounts in them.
根据文章第四段中的“To figure out how quickly trees were growing, researchers tracked their diameters”可知,研究人员监测树木的直径是为了了解树木的生长速度。

【答案】36.A 前文“They’ll send an actual human being to your room.Don’t worry. They won’t come in and kiss you good morning.”(他们会派一个人去你的房间。 故选A。
37.F 前文Never mind that most travelers nowadays have smart phones with built-in alarm clocks.(大多数旅行的人都有手机闹铃,那也没关系),后文举例说明各个酒店的个性人工叫醒服务,故而该空应是过渡句,F项The human wake-up call is a way to personalize a guest’s stay.(人工叫醒是一种个性化客人入住的方式)符合题意。
If you don’t answer,you’ll get a wake-up knock.(如果你不接电话,那么就有人来敲门)与之衔接,进一步印证酒店人工叫醒的人性化。
39.C 前文Hotels have always taken the wake-up call seriously.(酒店对叫醒这件事是非常认真的)是本段主题句,而后文介绍了皇冠假日酒店有措施确保叫醒服务得以实施。故选C项Crown Plaza,for instance,has a wake-up call guarantee.(例如,皇冠假日酒店就有叫醒服务保证)。
But the wake-up call became less personal over the years.(但随着时间的推移,叫醒电话变得不那么私人了)切题。

We were worrying about what could be done.
As we drove along,a flower shop came into sight

But after waiting in vain for a considerable time, mom and I decided to walk back the road to the nursing home and seek help.God knows how far we had driven! When we arrived, the receptionist was surprised, but warmly helped us contact the garage. There, the old men who had received the flowers were excited to meet us,talking about how great that day was.It amazed me what random actions of kindness could mean to the people who received it.While we were laughing and talking merrily, the garage got our car repaired.
As__we__drove__along,a__flower__shop__came__into__sight on the road.I paced quickly into the flower shop, where a bunch of flowers glowing red in full bloom caught my eye.Having witnessed the effect of kindness,I decided to send mom the sweet flowers.Soon, the heavenly scent filled the car again.Mom tried to conceal her excitement, but the glittering tears failed her.Through this trip,I discovered that, despite my occasional anger towards her,I actually felt proud of her. This was the trip of my life.
