Brainstorming is the practice of coming up with ideas or solutions. 1 But we do have some rules
to follow for successful brainstorming.
Focus on quantity(数量) over quality. When it comes to brainstorming, the more ideas, the better.
Don t worry about the quality of your ideas for now. 2 Remember that your goal is to come up with as
many ideas as possible. Even if none of them are perfect, you ll still have many creative ideas to use for
your final plan.
47
Encourage big or unusual ideas. 3 Although unusual ideas may not be immediately practical,
just creating those ideas gives your brain training. It can also help to produce creative solutions that are
hard to come up with.
4 Don t say no to the ideas of others. You can put together the best parts of different ideas to
create new, even better ones. Even if you re not brainstorming as a group, you should still think about
sharing your ideas with others and asking them for their advice.
You don t have to regard yourself as a very creative person to come up with excellent ideas and solu-
tions at once. 5 Even if you don t find the perfect solution, just practicing it can help to improve your
creativity. Put these tips together and you are sure to come up with some great ideas.
A. Share ideas with each other.
B. Brainstorming can help unlock ideas.
C. There s no correct way to brainstorm.
D. Just say or write any idea that comes to mind.

Few people knew about online food delivery(外卖) apps ten years ago, but today, many would find
it hard to live without them. For better or for worse, online food delivery services have changed the way we
eat. 1
These services without doubt have many advantages. They provide jobs for millions of people and
help restaurants find more customers. Since the apps are very easy to use, they also do good to customers:
we can now have meals delivered at any time of day. 2 Not only do these apps save time, they also
provide us with plenty of restaurants to choose from. They are useful for old people as well. They can buy
meals and foods more easily with these apps.
3 First, they make it even easier to order unhealthy food. Food safety is another problem: it can
be hard to know where the food comes from. As delivery men need to send the orders as quickly as possi-
ble, some pay little attention to traffic rules. 4 What s more, delivery services are creating too much
packaging waste, and this will be harmful to the environment.
There are many advantages of online food delivery services, but we need to make sure that we make
the right choices in the long run. 5 We also need to make sure what we eat is healthy. Next time you
are thinking about ordering in, ask yourself whether you really need to. Most of the time, it s better to buy
what you need and cook by yourself.
A. We should try our best to avoid waste.
B. They are also making a big difference to our society.
C. However, we mustn t forget the disadvantages of these services.
D. Learning how to order food online is necessary for young people.

Deadly flooding has swept Henan Province in July, 2021. 1 Up to August 2nd, a total of 302
people have been killed and 50 have been missing.
Floods are very common in China and can happen without any warnings, especially in the rainy sea-
son. They move quickly and have strong currents. They are known to heavily bring down trees and destroy
(摧毁) buildings. 2
So, in view of the great danger of floods, how should we save ourselves Here are some tips.
If a flood warning has been given, look for shelter(庇护) immediately. 3 Because the fast-
moving water can easily knock a person down or even sweep cars away.
Avoid bridges that cross rapidly-moving water, as floodwaters can cause bridges to break.
If you are caught in a flooded building, move to the highest floor. 4
Stay away from power lines, as they are often destroyed or knocked down during strong storms.
Last, here are also some tips to keep in mind after a flood. Listen to emergency broadcasts(应急
广播) for further instructions. Return to your home only after local governments have said it is
safe. 5 Use only bottled or boiled water for drinking and cooking.
A. Don t drink floodwater or use it to wash food.
B. Never try to walk, swim or drive through floodwaters.
C. It s impossible to provide food and medicine for your family.
D. More than hundreds of thousands of people have been influenced.

Recently, a group of four “common” people were sent into space in the first space mission(任务)

works to help children who have cancer.
The four are carried into space in the same SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule(太空舱) that carries NASA

Sian Proctor, a college professor who was nearly chosen as a NASA astronaut in 2009, Chris Sembroski,
who used to be part of the US Air Force and now works for an airline company. 3
Though this is the first “all amateur(外行)” fight, it s clear that the members have a lot of knowl-
edge and experience. 4 The Inspiration 4 mission orbits(沿轨道运行) 575 km above the earth.
That s about 150 km higher than the ISS. Inspiration 4 doesn t have professional astronauts running the

Many of us have had this experience: we lie down in a bed instead of our own, perhaps at a friend s
house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult to fall asleep. Why does it happen
1 They believe one side of the brain acts as a “night watch” to warn us about possible dangers.
It prevents us from getting to sleep on the first night in a new environment.
For the study, 35 young volunteers were asked to sleep in a sleep lab for several days as researchers
watched their brain activities. 2 So they had a hard time sleeping. However, the left-brain activity
dropped as days went by. In this process, the volunteers got better and better sleep experience.
The findings show that the different rhythms(节奏) of the two sides of the brain influence our sleep.
3 So the brain can t relax.
“The brain is continuing to work, even though you don t realize it,” US professor Jerome Siegel said.
“ 4 ” This is like the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half
of their brain while the other half stays awake.
If you have ever had first night effect, researchers advise you to bring your own pillow(枕头) next
time you sleep away from home. 5
A. If something unusual happens, you can be quick to notice it.
B. On their first night, the left brain was more active than the right brain.
C. A new study shows one reason is what the scientists call “ first night effect” .
D. It s the right side of the brain that influences our ability to remember things.
E. When the two sides of the brain work differently, the balance between them is broken.
F. You can also try to find a room similar to your own bedroom and spend your night there.

Have you ever counted the number of digits(数字) in your mobile phone number Your number has
eleven digits. 1 That s because China has the longest mobile phone numbers in the world. Why is
that
The eleven digits can be divided into three parts. 2 The first three numbers tell you which
mobile phone service provider you are using. For example, 135 is for China Mobile Communication Corpo-
ration and 188 is for China Unicom. The fourth to the seventh digits tell you which areas the number is
recorded in. And the last four digits are random(随机的) .
The main reason for using 11 digits is that we have the largest population in the world. We once had
ten numbers. 3 So we began to use eleven digits starting from 1999.
Eleven digits can be used to make tens of millions of mobile phone numbers. That s enough for each
person to have seven or eight phone numbers to use in China. 4 Usually, the service provider will
reuse a canceled number after three to six months. Besides China, Britain and Japan also use 11-digit
mobile phone numbers. 5 So they cannot create as many numbers as we can.
Countries like the United States, Australia and India use mobile phone numbers with ten digits,
Canadians mobile phone numbers are perhaps the world s shortest: they use seven digits.
A. Each part has a different meaning.
B. But their numbers always start with 0.
C. Also, mobile phone numbers can be recycled.
D. You may sometimes find it hard to remember your number.
E. In China, almost everyone can remember his or her own phone number.
F. But as our population grows, there are not enough numbers for us to use.
