A
Graham Moore is the best-selling writer of The Sherlockian and the TV play The Imitation Game. His new book The Last Days of Night is out now. He is talking about some of his favorite books.
Murder in Three Acts
by Agatha Christie
My mother is a crime fiction lover and, when I was having trouble learning to read, we'd sit in my bed at home in Chicago and take it in turns to read a paragraph. It was the first book I read cover-to-cover and I later became a writer because of that experience. Not only did it give me a love of crime fiction but, more importantly, it taught me that reading can be a shared experience.
Cryptonomicon
by Neal Stephenson
This book showed me that historical fiction need not be dry, but can be lively and enjoyable. Stephenson asks readers to take science seriously, but writes the story in a funny way. I have long known of Alan Turing, but Stephenson's technique(手法) of describing him was surprising. I saw how a writer can bring a real person to life for modern readers.
A Visit from the Goon Squad
by Jennifer Egan
Egan uses a technique when she writes A Visit from the Goon Squad. She tells stories from different voices and times, and uses many styles that say to readers, "I've done a lot of work, but now you have to join in and work it out for yourselves."
With my latest book, my greatest hope is that readers will want to get other people discussing the book. I've just started the conversation.
1. What influenced Moore to be a writer
A. Reading crime fiction in secret. B. Reading a book with his mother.
C. Having trouble learning to read. D. Writing stories at a young age.
2. Which of the following is not true according to the passage

3. Which book does Moore want readers to discuss
A. The Sherlockian. B. The Imitation Game. C. The Last Days of Night. D. A Visit from the Goon Squad.

The oldest stone buildings in the world are the pyramids(金字塔). They have stood for nearly 5,000 years, and it seems likely that they will continue to stand for thousands of years yet. There are over eighty of them scattered along the banks of the Nile, some of which are different in shape from the true pyramids. The most famous of these are the “Step” pyramid and the “Bent” pyramid.
Some of the pyramids still look as much alike as they must have been when they were built thousands of years ago. Most of the damage suffered by the others has been at the hands of men who were looking for treasure or. more often, for stone to use in modern buildings. The dry climate of Egypt has helped to keep the pyramid, in good condition, and their very shape has made them less likely to fall into ruin(毁坏). These are good reasons why they can still be seen today, but perhaps the most important one is that they were planned to last forever.
The “Step” pyramid had to be on the west side of the Nile, the side on which the sun set. This was for spiritual reasons. It also had to stand well above the level of the river to protect it against the regular floods. It could not be too far from the Nile, however, as the stones to build it needed to be carried in boats down the river to the nearest point. Water transport was, of course, much easier than land transport. The builders also had to find a rock base, which was not likely to crack under the great weight of the pyramid. Finally, it had to be near the capital, or better still, near the king's palace so that he could visit it easily to personally check the progress being made on the final resting place for his body.
4. Most of the damage to the pyramids has been caused by ________.
A. stones B. rivers C. weather D. men
5. The most important reason why some pyramids remain in good condition is that ________.
A. people have taken care of them B. it doesn't rain often in Egypt
C. they were well designed D. the government has protected them from damage
6. The Egyptians build the pyramids along the banks of the Nile Because _______.
A. they believed in their god.
B. it was difficult to find a large rock base far from the Nile.
C. the river helped a lot in the transport of building materials.
D. it was not easy to choose a suitable place for the pyramids.

After my father left us, my mother had to go back to work to support our family. Once I came out of the kitchen, complaining, “Mom, I can’t peel potatoes. I have only one hand.”
Mom never looked up from sewing. “You get yourself into that kitchen and peel those potatoes,” she told me. “And don’t ever use that as an excuse for anything again!”
In the second grade, our teacher lined up my class on the playground and had each of us race across the monkey bars, swinging(摆动) from one high steel rod to the next. When it was my turn, I shook my head. Some kids behind me laughed, and I went home crying.
That night I told Mom about it. She hugged me, and I saw her “we’ll see about that” look. The next afternoon, she took me back to school. At the deserted playground, Mom looked carefully at the bars. “Now, pull up with your right arm,” she advised. She stood by as I struggled to lift myself with my right hand until I could hook the bar with my other elbow(手肘). Day after day we practiced, and she praised me for every rung(横档) I reached. I’ll never forget the next time, crossing the rungs, I looked down at the kids who were standing with their mouths open.
One night, after a dance at my new junior high, I lay in bed sobbing. I could hear Mom come into my room. “Mom,” I said, weeping, “none of the boys would dance with me.”
For a long time, I didn’t hear anything. Then she said, “Oh, honey, someday you’ll be beating those boys off with a bat.” Her voice was weak and trembling. I peeked out from my covers to see tears running down her cheeks. Then I knew how much she suffered because of me. She had never let me see her tears.

9. When the child looked down at the kids, they were standing with their mouths open because _________.
A. they felt sorry for what they had done before
B. they were afraid the author might fall off and get hurt

D. they were surprised to find the author’s progress

As I enter my 40s, I’ve noticed many of my parents’ generation think social networking is something they are simply unable to understand. They fear that, should they try, they will somehow get it wrong; they will say the wrong thing, do the wrong thing or behave in a way that causes embarrassment(尴尬). But here’s the first secret of social media: Everyone feels this way.
I recently met a young actor who was complaining that her work demands that she join Microblog, but she always feels like she doesn’t have anything smart to say. It’s the same resistance(抵制) I hear from the older generation, who, however, have somehow believed that age is the barrier(障碍), rather than the differences of personal taste.
Here’s the second secret of social media: everybody uses it for more or less the same reasons. Older generations often sign up to stay in touch with children and relatives. We talk about this kind of communication like it’s some old-fashioned activity, but it is exactly why younger people use social media. The truth is that most people use social media to gently keep an eye on one another, to see how those they care about are doing without needing to ring them up on the phone every night.
And this is the last secret of social media: everyone gets to use them in their own way. Newcomers—younger and older—who worry about “getting it right” are thinking that there’s a right way to get them. But actually there isn’t. Personally, I talk a lot on Microblog. And some people post nothing and they use social media every day as readers. Social media companies would rather see people decorating their networks with pictures and posts, but there’s no rule against being a fly on the wall. It’s also a fine way to take part in the net.
I’d never try forcing those with no interest in social networks to use Microblog. But don’t let the talk of age divides put you off. There’s nothing to stop the older generation from joining in the network their own generation created.
11.What’s the author’s purpose of writing this passage
A. To share with us his personal experience using social media.
B. To free the old generation from fearing using social media.
C. To explain why the old generation don’t use social media.
D. To tell us a few secrets of social media that he discovered.
12. The expression “a fly on the wall” in the 4th paragraph refers to _________.
A. people who prefer reading online books B. people who simply read others’ posts
C. people who cause trouble to others D. people who post many fancy pictures
13. According to the author, which is a reason for old people’s fear using social media
A. They have no special interest in social networking.
B. They prefer staying in touch with relatives in real life.
C. They believe they may fall into embarrassing situations.
D. They have no idea what to post online.
14. Which of the following may best describe the structure of this passage
