(2022·辽宁省沈阳市重点高中联合体高一下学期月考)When I'm in Italy, I generally only eat Italian food. I doubt whether there's another country in Europe that has food that can keep me coming back for more.
To eat well in Italy, finding the right restaurant is essential. I appreciate personality driven restaurants, run by people keen (热衷的) to share their love of good cooking, and places serving family recipes. Signs of a good restaurant include a low rent location, lots of locals, and a small, handwritten menu in one language. The menu is small because they're only selling everything they're cooking; it's handwritten because it's shaped by what is fresh today in the market; and it's in one language because they mostly serve locals.
For a fast and cheap lunch, I look for Italian food in corner delis (熟食店): either a rosticceria, specializing in roasted meats and antipasti (开胃食物), or a hot table bar—a cafeteria offering a buffet of meat and vegetables. Another option is to drop by a neighborhood grocery store to pick up some cold cuts, cheeses, and other foods for a picnic.
Italians tend to spend a long time on each course, and dinner is the evening's entertainment. For example, when you have a full blown Italian dinner in a restaurant, you don't get out until midnight; a three hour meal is common. Waiters often provide lots of drinks that seem designed to keep you from leaving. When you want the bill, you'll have to ask for it. To “eat and run” is seen as a lost opportunity.
A couple of years ago, I sat down at my favorite place in Verona, Enoteca Can Grande, with my friend and guide Franklin. We let the chef, Giuliano bring us whatever he wanted. Just after the antipasti arrived, Franklin's wife phoned him and said, “Don't eat too much cheese or dessert.” Later Franklin, who was not thin, surveyed our table. Sighing, he said, “The foods are so plentiful but I can eat few.”
“That's a pity,” I said.
I enjoyed the food for three hours and he watched me eating for three hours. Eating in Verona was really an amazing experience.

(2022·云南师范大学附属中学高一下学期期中)One thing that sets humans apart from other members of the animal kingdom is our tendency to develop customs and traditions. Here are some astonishing customs from around the world.
An odd custom associated with the United States is its complicated tipping culture. Unlike many other countries that don't tip at all or that only tip in small amounts when the food is particularly good, tipping is actually mandatory at most restaurants in the US. To put it another way, customers have a duty to leave between 10-20 percent of the bill in tips. Wait staff rely on these tips for a living because legal wages for waiters are low. Furthermore, there are rules for tipping bartenders, delivery people and other service personnel. While some criticize this practice as irrational, there's no doubt that tipping culture in the US gives an incentive for waiters and waitresses to provide better service.
Some countries find the act of pointing with the index finger to be rude. While members of most cultures would probably agree that pointing fingers, both literally and figuratively, isn't exactly the nicest thing in the world, in countries like Malaysia and Indonesia, this gesture can be seen as incredibly offensive. Instead, it is customary to gesture towards things with the thumb as this is seen as a more polite option. In many countries in Africa, pointing is reserved for inanimate objects only, not people.
Most societies around the world have rules about table manners. For western cultures, noisily consuming food is considered rude. In Japan, however, making slurping (啧啧响的) sounds while eating has an entirely different meaning. This might have something to do with the fact that in western countries, noodles are properly consumed by twirling (缠绕) them on a spoon before putting them in the mouth. Meanwhile, the Japanese simply slurp up their noodles without contorting them first, an act that is naturally noisier than the former. Making slurping sounds when eating noodles in Japan is a way of indicating that you're rely enjoying them. Some scientists even argue slurping invites air into the mouth and actually enhances the noodles' flavor.
1.What does the underlined word “mandatory” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A.Required by tradition.
B.Highly spoken of.
C.Changeable over time.
D.Popular among people.
2.What does the author think of tipping
A.It is totally unreasonable.
B.It must follow a fixed standard.
C.It can improve the quality of service.
D.It should only target waiters and waitresses.
3.Which practice is acceptable according to the text
A.Skipping tipping in the USA.
B.Twirling noodles on a spoon in Africa.
C.Pointing with the index finger in Indonesia.
D.Making sounds while eating noodles in Japan.
4.Where is this text probably taken from
A.A research paper.
B.A travel brochure.
C.An online advertisement.
D.A popular magazine.

(2022·辽宁省大连市第一中学高一下学期测试)“Good morning,” the new teacher said. “I'm Ernesto Flores, your teacher for fifth grade.” In all his years in school, Julio had never heard a teacher use his or her first name. Of course, the students always found out what they were, but it was up to the students to discover this information for themselves.
“Now I'd like to find out who you are,” said Mr Flores. He began to call the roll (点名), starting with the boys. Julio shook his head. Teachers always began with the girls.
“Julio Sanchez” called Mr Flores, pronouncing it Hulio. That was the correct way to say the name in Spanish.
Several kids laughed. They had never heard Julio's name pronounced without the J. Mr Flores looked up from the roll book.“Isn't that how you say your name?” he asked Julio. “Or do you prefer Julio with a J?”
“At home, they call me Hulio. But at school everyone calls me Julio,” Julio said.
“Do you like two pronunciations of your name?” asked the teacher. “It's a good Spanish name and you should be proud of it.”
Julio smiled. “I know,” he said, “but it doesn't matter to me.”
“Are you sure?” asked Mr Flores. “Your name is a very important part of you.”
Julio thought for a moment. “Okay,” he said. “From now on, everyone please call me Hulio. Puerto Rico, where I was born, used to be a Spanish colony (殖民地).”

(2022·辽宁省名校联盟高一下学期联合考试)The world has been witnessing a growing number of countries where people from around the globe live together and communicate with each other, with various customs and beliefs coexisting. America and Singapore are typical examples. Distinct cultures merge into a common cultural context for mankind. That's why many feel as if people are living in a multicultural age.
Culture shapes identity and influences behaviors, and cultural diversity makes one accept, or to some extent, even integrate and assimilate (同化) into other cultures. To adapt to a diverse cultural community, the fundamental thing is to be aware that there are different cultures apart from one's own. Take a positive view of different cultures, and we can broaden our horizons. Sometimes a person may not know much about geography or history, but by mixing with people from other cultures, they may have the opportunity to learn about different countries.
For those who want to learn but do not know where to start, a great point is to pick up a book about another culture they are interested in, or do some online research on reputable International websites. The best way to learn, though, is through face to face interaction with people from other cultures. One more way to start learning about new cultures is simply tasting the food from different cultures, since food can also be an aspect of cultural diversity.
Understanding diversity is important for us adults. It's the same for our children too, especially for those who live in culturally diverse cities such as Los Angeles, Shanghai, or Hong Kong. If our children are not aware of diversity, then they become close minded. This can lead to troubles at school and even lead to bullying. Show them how diverse the world is. Help them be more open minded toward people of different races, cultures, and countries.
In today's world, if everyone is able to know about other cultures, and respect other values, life will be easier.

A.They are of a size.

A.To stress the importance of taking a positive view of different cultures.
B.To attach the importance of learning about geography and history.
C.To emphasize that broadening our horizons is a must.
D.To show that we have broadened horizons.
3.Which of the following is not the way to learn about new cultures
A.Tasting food from different cultures.
B.Reading books about one's own culture.
C.Doing online research about other cultures.
D.Interacting with foreigners face to face.
4.Who are the article intended for
A.Teachers. B.Travelers.

However, the traditional Christmas food, such as turkey, ham and roast potatoes, is still very popular, along with salad and glasses of wine.
It may seem a bit strange to hear songs, such as White Christmas or Deck the Halls, in the middle of summer! Nevertheless, Christmas carols (颂歌) are popular. 4
