The Development of Electric Cars
Electric cars may seem like a recent invention, but they have been around for years. In the early 1900s, there were 31 electric cars on the road than gasoline(汽油)cars, because at that time, gasoline was expensive compared with other fuels(燃料). Electric cars were more popular.
When gasoline 32 dropped and new technologies on gasoline cars were developed, electric cars were out of date. Gasoline cars became more popular 33 , because they could go farther without stopping.
During the 20th century, gasoline cars got bigger, heavier and faster. They needed more fuel, and it 34 more air pollution. For years, the car makers didn't worry about pollution. But when people began to 35 that there was not enough oil on the earth, they asked car makers to produce more efficient(高效能的)and less polluting cars.
One 36 of solving the problem was a “hybrid” car(混合动力车), one that ran partly on gasoline and partly on electricity. Hybrid cars became popular in the 2000s because gasoline prices went up while prices of hybrid cars went 37 .
An all electric car uses no gasoline. The problem, however, is that car batteries(电池)need to be recharged(再充电). That makes electric cars not so 38 for long journeys. Many people are not pleased with it. The government and car makers are working together to 39 safe, cheap and useful electric cars. I am crazy about traveling abroad. Last year, I took a trip to Toronto 41 . Those nights, I stayed in a youth hostel(青年招待所). For me, hostels are places 42 I can meet and talk to different people. It's great fun for me. During the stay in the hostel, I met two girls, one from Brazil and 43 from Slovakia. We three had very relaxing talks together. We shared our personal travel experiences and the interesting people we met with one another. The girl from Brazil was a lawyer (律师)who helped people 44 their family problems. She was taking a trip to Canada all by herself. The girl from Slovakia had great interest 45 photography. As I was a photography fan 46 , we ended up talking about how to take perfect photos by using a camera.
The best part is that they both became my close friends. Up till now, sometimes we still talk with each other online. Last month, I got some photos from the Brazilian girl. To my 47 , she already had a baby daughter! In the photos their big smiles made them look like 48 people in the world. I was so glad for her. And it's such a great thing to know that there are people 49 you from far away. Though you may just meet each other for 50 of hours, you have someone caring about you in the other side of the world. And I think that's the fantastic part of traveling.

Asking for directions is the first thing we need to do when we get to a different country. Knowing how to ask for help can make our life much easier! Here are some tips for you.

Examples: It's about two blocks away from here. /Go along the street until you reach the traffic lights.
Learn the most commonly used prepositions and adverbs: Some important prepositions to remember are between, next to, and straight ahead. And the adverbs near, nearer, and nearest are very useful when you need to find somewhere fast.

In Britain you may often hear “Drop in any time” or “Come to see me soon”, but you can't really do that. People just say those things to make you feel welcome. It is better to telephone before visiting someone at home. If you receive a written invitation to an event that says “RSVP”, you should reply to let the person who sent the invitation know whether or not you plan to go.
You should never accept an invitation unless you really plan to go. You may refuse by saying, “Thank you for inviting me, but I will not be able to come.” If, after accepting, you are unable to go, be sure to tell those who are expecting you as soon as possible that you will not be there.
Though it is not necessarily expected that you give a gift to your host, it is considered polite to do so, especially if you have been invited for a meal. Flowers, chocolate, or a small gift are all appropriate(合适的). A thank you note or telephone call after the visit is also considered polite and is an appropriate way to express your appreciation for the invitation.

I can ride it together with other kids to keep healthy. It's full of fun.” For most parents, it can help them save a lot of time because they only have to pick up their children after school.
The S'Cool Bus is becoming more and more popular in some countries like Germany and France. Its creator—Thomas Tolkamp says, “I hope I can sell the bike bus to more countries in the future. Have you met someone who kept talking and talking, and you couldn't make them stop You don't want to be impolite by telling them to shut up(住口), but you really want to get out of the conversation. Here are some ways to help you.
Use body language. While it may feel impolite, you could turn away, put your headphones(耳机) on, and avoid looking at his or her eyes, which will show that you don't want to talk. This may save you from directly telling someone to stop talking later on.
Keep working on whatever you are doing. Get up and move around, be active and find little things to do instead of listening.
Interrupt(打断) them as soon as you can. Saying things like “I'd like to add something” or “If I could interrupt you for just a minute” will often let someone know that they are talking too much.
Lead the conversation. This is especially helpful when dealing with someone you often talk to. Let them know that you heard what they said and guide the conversation in a different direction.
Mention(提到) that you don't have a lot of time to talk. Expressions like “I would love to chat, but I have to go for a movie right now” and “Today's not a great day to talk. I have a lot of things to do” will make you easily end the conversation.
Remember it is a skill to back out of a conversation without saying “You are boring. Shut up.”

Going to a friend's house is very exciting. You may spend time with a friend and get to see where he or she lives. So remember to be polite.
The first thing to remember is that when a friend invites you over, you need to arrive on time. If your friend tells you to come “around 3: 00 p. m.”, that means you can arrive a little bit late after 3: 00 p. m. But usually it is a good idea to arrive at the right time.
Often it is also nice to bring something to your friend's house. This could be a box of chocolates for you to share, or maybe a CD that you can enjoy together. You can also bring some flowers. A little gift is a nice way to show your friend that you are excited to be at his or her house.
When you visit your friend's house, you may also meet his or her parents. You should tell them who you are and they may tell you their names. As a child, I went to visit my friend Paul. I called his parents by their first names John and Mary. But now I know it is more polite to call them Mr. and Mrs. Smith. This will show them more respect(尊重)and then they may tell you to call them by their first names. Another way to show respect is to call them madam or sir.
It is a cool thing to visit a friend's house. Be polite to your friend and your friend's parents, and you will be invited again.
( )70. When should you arrive if you are invited to a friend's house
A. Almost on time. B. An hour earlier.
C. As late as possible. D. As early as possible.
( )71. When you visit your friend's house, you'd better NOT bring ________ as a little gift.

( )72. What should you do when you see your friend's parents
A. Keep quiet. B. Tell them your name first.
C. Tell them why you are there. D. Call their names directly.

My name is Sandy. I had a really good weekend. My brother and I went to my cousin's house in the countryside. We went on the train on Friday evening and arrived at six o'clock. My aunt and uncle cooked a big dinner for us, and then we all went swimming. It was great fun. On Saturday afternoon we went shopping in Fourth Street in the town. I bought some new summer clothes and my brother, of course, bought a computer game. In the evening we went to a nice fast food restaurant. I had a hamburger and it was delicious. We went home on Sunday but I wanted to stay in the countryside—for it is amazing and full of interesting places.

When I choose a job, I will first consider if I like it. I can't believe people can do something they don't like. My second consideration is the location. As we all know, time is important. I don't want to waste time on my way to work or home every day. It means less time to sleep and less fun with family at night. When we spend too much time on the road, we will become very angry. Our mood will be influenced a lot. I'm really tired of public transportation but I can't drive by myself. And at last I will consider how much I will get. I think although money is not the most important, it is necessary.
