Part 1. Teaching Objectives
By learning this reading material, students can improve the core competence below:
1. Cultural Awareness: have a better understanding of the topic--- getting to the top.
2. Language Competence: learn to express the expressions to strive for greatness like “ to push oneself to the limits”, “willing to do the extra little bit” and totally committed to the sport” etc…
3. Learning Capacity: figure out the structure of a blog and learn to find the gist of it.
4. Thinking Quality: find ways to get to the top by themselves and realize what sacrifices they need to make in order to get to the top.

Lead in Create situation and warm up. Lead in & Pre-reading (Pictures and a video) 1.Free talk : China has just hosted the winter Olympics in Beijing. What is your favorite Olympic game and your favorite athlete I’m interested in one, let me show you! 2.Students are activated to watch a short video to get a better understanding of triathlon and triathletes. Warm up the topic. Be activated to arouse interest and motivation.
While-reading Students‘ core competence is enhanced by different reading activities. Read for basic information: Scan the article and check the prediction. 1.) Read the first 4 paragraphs to find out who wrote the article A.a swimmer B. a triathlete C. an actress 2.) Go through the text quickly to find the text type of this article A. a diary B. a blog C. a news report This step is designed to get a general idea of the passage by checking prediction.
Read for structure: Part 1: para 1-4 Her situation (sacrifices and fear) Part2: para 5-6 Reasons for success Part3: para 7-8 Personal choice This step is to make students get a better understanding of this passage by analyzing the structure.
Read for details: Activity1: Read the text and complete the following chart using the key words and find out the relevant details in the text.(Pair work) This step is aimed at building up students ability in digging out the main idea of each part of the passage.
Post reading Activity1 : Discuss and write a short passage about how to get to the top (Group work) Activity 2: Act out (Group work) Make an interview in a group of 4 to practice the sentences about getting to the top we’ve learned today. This step is to enhance students’ capability in using the new words and phrases and also put them in real-life use by acting it out.
IV. Summary Using a famous quote to wrap up. “It’s easier to get to the top when you are shooting for the top.” ---Theresa Russell This step is to put what have been discussed to a nutshell.
V. Homework 1. Find another story of getting to the top. 2. Retell the story of the triathlete. This step is to extend students’ ability in applying the concept outside the class.
