①We are often told to pay attention to what our mothers tell us. Most of us enjoy listening to our mothers speak. Scientists have found that compared to other people’s voices, our brains greatly prefer the voices of our own mothers.
②Scientists at Stanford University, US, recently studied this. They scanned (扫描) children’s brains while they were listening to different sounds, including their mothers’ voices. They found that 97 percent of the time, children could recognize(识别) their mothers’ voices at once.
③Hearing their mothers’ voices makes children’s brains more active. We usually just use one part of our brain to deal with sounds when we hear something. But when we hear our mothers’ voices, many parts of the brain, including those in charge of(负责) reward (奖赏) and emotion, start to work as well.
④Why do we react so strongly to our mothers’ voices ▲ . When children are still in the womb(子宫) or have just been born, they hear their mothers talking. A special kitchen is in a path, next to Jiangxi Cancer (癌) Hospital, in Nanchang. Around meal time, three times every day, relatives of the hospital’s patients use the kitchen to cook food for their loved ones.
The kitchen was at first a breakfast stall (摊) run by a husband and wife, Wan Zuocheng and Xiong Gengxiang. One day, in 2003, a young couple asked if they could use the stove (炉子) to cook food for their son who was suffering from bone cancer. He wanted to eat his mother’s cooking while he was hospitalized. A long time before I was born, my grandma and grandpa moved into the house on Beechwood Avenue. They had a young family of 4 little girls. During that time, it was hard to find a job. So, on weekend grandpa and grandma cleaned the garden to grow some of their own food. They planted tomatoes, beans, cabbages, potatoes and strawberries to feed their growing family. All summer long, the family ate food from the garden.
The family grew up, and before too many years had passed, the grandchildren came to visit. Grandma and grandpa still planted their garden every spring. Everyone still enjoyed the good food from the garden and always took some home.
Then grandpa died in one summer when he was eighty-nine years old. It was a lonely winter for grandma. She sat near the window, looking out at the yard and wondering if she could plant the garden in the spring. It would be hard to care for it by herself. When spring came, she planted only a little.
One nice day in the early summer, grandma heard a noise in the front yard and looked out the window. There were thousands of bees in the air. Grandma wondered what she could do. She decided to wait and think it over. Before long, she decided the bees won’t bother anyone, so she went about her business and didn’t give them any other thought.
That summer, grandma’s little garden grew and grew. The neighbors all puzzled why they grew so well. One day, grandma’s brother Frank visited her. Frank said,“In my hometown, the farmers often hired beekeepers to set up bee houses near their fields. The bees helped them to grow.” That was when Grandma realized that her bees had helped with her garden all summer.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans create millions of tons of rubbish every year. Only one-third of the rubbish is recycled, and just over 10 percent is burned. Over half of them goes to landfills(填埋场). Landfills are costly to build and can be another kind of pollution.
Efforts have been made to reduce the influence of waste on landfills. Many innovative uses for waste have been developed. One use for waste is to create energy.
When waste is used to create energy, it results in heat or smelly gas. The most common way to achieve this result is through burning. But burning waste can have dangerous and acid (酸的) gas. This created acid rain that was harmful to both people and buildings. So green guidelines were developed. Now filters(过滤器) are used, and they make waste gas cleaner than most home fireplaces. Besides the acid gas that is produced, the remains can be highly poisonous and must be dealt with very carefully.
The most common method of creating energy is by using the heat to boil water. The boiling water pushes steam generators (蒸汽发电机) to make electricity for homes and businesses.
Today, new ways of using waste to create electricity or fuels are being developed. They are very complicated. One example is the heating method, which uses extremely high temperatures without burning.
The goal is to turn waste into something useful for us. Sweden has run out of waste to turn into energy. Now they buy waste from other countries. Perhaps someday we will also be able to make total use of our waste.

Summer vacation is coming to an end. How many of you have burned the midnight oil to finish your homework over the last few days What about during the school year—when you get home from school, do you start working on your homework right away
It can be hard to be this responsible(负责任的). A lot of people like to put off difficult or annoying tasks until they must be done. They’re called procrastinators(拖延症患者).
Procrastination is a common problem for many people, in fact. Sometimes it just feels easier to wait until the last minute to do certain things. However, this is usually not a good thing, as you have to work harder and faster if you wait until there is little time left. This means your work will probably be of less quality(质量).
I myself am a bit of a procrastinator. But most of the time, I try to finish my work earlier rather than later. It just makes more sense—if I finish my work now, I’ll have more time to relax or work on other projects later. It can be hard to encourage myself to get started sometimes. But once I do, the work gets done quickly and with little stress.
Everyone procrastinates from time to time. It’s a natural thing to do. You don’t have to beat yourself up over it—after all, we still need time to relax and take a break from our busy lives. Just make sure you still get your homework done on time!

A.it is hard for people to finish work on time

①Think back to when you were in a math class, and the teacher set a difficult problem. Which of the following is closer to you
A:Oh no, this is too hard for me. I’m not even going to seriously try and work it out.
B:Ah, this is quite difficult but I like to push myself. Even if I don’t get the answer right, maybe I’ll learn something in a try.
②Carol Dweck, the researcher of Stanford University, gave a group of children problems that were a little hard for them. One group said they loved trying something new or something difficult and understood that their abilities could be developed. She says they had a “growth mindset(成长心态)”, which would make them better at study. But another group of children felt that they were unable to imagine improving. Some of these children might cheat in the future; others looked for someone who had done worse than them to make themselves feel better.
③Carol believes that there is a problem in education at the moment. For years, children have been praised for their talent. They become pleased by getting high grades, but they are not necessarily interested in learning itself. “The better way,” she says, “is to praise them for their hard work or their good learning habits or their improvements. This way they will achieve more.”
④Researchers have been testing these ideas. Students were taught that if they learned something new and difficult, their brains would form stronger connections, making them more clever. And they made faster progress in the end. In another study, a group of school children used growth mindset for a year. The results were really surprising. They came top in tests. These children had ever felt that working hard was a sign of stupidity(愚蠢), but they came to see it as the key to learning.
⑤So, back to our question at the beginning. If you answered B, well done—you already have a growth mindset. If A, don’t worry; everyone is able to improve if you really want to.

A.something new B.faster progress C.another study D.working hard
36.In this article, the writer hopes that ________.
A.children will get high grades in tests B.children will have a growth mindset

Delia was a young pianist. Her husband, Joe, was a young artist.
Each of them was taking lessons: Joe with a famous art teacher, and Delia with a great pianist from Germany. Their teachers were the very best, so lessons were expensive, more than they could really afford(支付得起), but…when you love your art, nothing is too much.
But soon the money began to run out, and they didn’t have money to pay for their lessons.
Then one day Delia came back home and told Joe that she had met a man in town whose daughter, Sally, wanted to learn the piano, and he was going to pay her $50 an hour.
“Delia, ”Joe said, “I’ll be much happier if you keep up your lessons. ” Delia said it didn’t matter. “When I’ve had some money, I’ll continue. ” But Joe also decided to stop his lessons, to draw pictures and sell them.
A few days later, Joe came home and took $200 from his pocket happily. “I met a man from Vermont, ” he said, “who bought one of my pictures. And he wants to buy more!”
_________________. They did’t have to worry any more about money.
Then, one day, Joe came home and saw that Delia’s hand was wrapped in a bandage. He asked her what had happened. “Oh, ” said Delia. “My student, Sally, asked me to make some coffee for her. I dropped the coffee and burned my hand. Sally went straight to the medicine store and got this bandage for me. ”
“Delia, what have you been doing the last two weeks ” Joe asked. She tried not to tell him, but the tears came out from her eyes. “Oh Joe, I couldn’t get any students, so I worked as a waitress in a restaurant. Today, I burned my hand with hot water. So I can’t work any more. But we’ll be able to have money from the man in Vermont, won’t we ”
Joe looked at her. “There’s no man in Vermont,” he said. “I’ve been working in a medicine store, and today someone came in to buy bandages for a woman who’d burned her hand. So when I saw you, well, I guessed it was you.”

When Justin Tong was a child, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him do lots of housework such as taking out the rubbish, doing some cooking and sending newspapers. But when he grew up, he was richer than his childhood friends and lived a happier and healthier life.
This is the finding of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 children in London. It showed that the children who had worked hard in childhood had a richer and a happier future. “Children who worked in the home or community got abilities and came to feel they were important members of society, ” said Daniel Brown, the expert who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Brown’s study followed these children in great detail(详情). Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Brown’s research group compared the children’s mental-health(心理健康)scores with their childhood-activity scores. Points were given for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
Working at any age is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility(责任), independence, confidence and competence—the basics of emotional(情绪的)health. They also help him understand that people must work together and work toward common goals. The most competent(有能力的)adults are those who know how to do this.
Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live wonderfully in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”

C.Children who take part in Daniel Brown’s study.
D.Children who feel good about people around them.
43.How did Brown follow the children in his study
A.By giving housework and praise. B.By interviewing and giving scores.
C.By setting goals and showing love. D.By solving problems and testing them.

C.To tell us about childhood activities. D.To encourage children to work hard.
Ann Walker(A tour guide in Chester):Close to the English and Welsh border(边界), the city of Chester has a long history. It’s filled with historic buildings, including some historic city walls in the country. For tourists this year, we have a new, free, self-guided tour that lines the city’s four main streets. Chester’s Rows are unique(独特的)in the world. Nobody is quite sure why they were built this way.
Brian Clarke (A boat driver in Chester):I was born in the small village of Mancot, six miles from Chester, and once I moved here, I simply never wanted to leave. My favorite place in Chester is the tree-lined banks of the River Dee. Every day I walk along the beautiful river to Chester Boat Business. Chester Boat Business began in Chester over 100 years ago. I started as a boat driver in 1979 and have had a wonderful life.
Katrina Kerr(An old lady in Chester):My husband and I moved to Chester in 1998. We really think it was a wise decision. Chester looks different from other cities -- so many black and white buildings. In summer it is busy with tourists and race-goers, and in winter, you can enjoy comedy clubs, jazz and Folk bars. Chester is right on the border with Wales, so for centuries, it has been a bit English and a bit Welsh. Now a new generation has started businesses in travel and finance(金融). No doubt that teens should also care about the world that we live in. Martinez is one of the most active environmentalist among the young people. When most teens are busy with sports, friends, and online games, he is working to save the planet.
So how does a teenager become a well-known environmentalist “I grew up in a family where people were always thinking about the environment,” says Martinez. When Martinez was just 6 years old, he decided he had to do something about climate (气候) change--a serious environmental problem. Scientists have been studying climate change for many years. They know that Earth’s climate changes on its own over time. But right now, it is changing more and more quickly than usual because of pollution created by people--by the cars, trucks and planes we ride in, and by the coal and oil we burn for electricity.
Martinez points out that climate change is a serious problem. “People may think they are helpless about climate change, like there is nothing they can do,” he says. But that is not true. “Humans caused climate change.” Martinez says. “And we can try to solve it.”
Martinez began looking for solutions (解决办法) when he was just a little kid. His elder brothers and sisters ran an environmental group called Earth Guardians, which was started by their mom. First, he listened when they had meetings. Soon, he was traveling around the country and the world. His goal To educate and raise people up to face the “war” of climate change.
Today, Martinez runs Earth Guardians. The group works with thousands of kids around the world. He speaks to students in classrooms about steps they can take to help the planet. And he writes and performs hip-hop songs about the environment. Martinez believes that if many people change their habits, the climate change can be cut down.
