What’s more important: Your employee or your customer A popular business expression is, “The customer is always right.” But you should never say “always”.
The owners of a restaurant in Alaska won international praise after protecting their autistic (自
闭的) employee.
When the employee delivered the wrong food to a customer’s house, that customer reacted violently and unkindly. Even after the employee corrected the mistake, the customer continued to shout. And that same customer was even rude to the restaurant owners’ daughter. So the owners “fired” the customer.
Restaurant owners P.J. and Spiro Gialopsos have added the customer to the restaurant’s “Do
Not Deliver” list. That customer is now persona non grata, Latin for “an unwelcome person”.
P.J. Gialopsos wrote on the restaurant’s Facebook page, “You would think the majority of the population would have learned or at least heard about autism.”
Gialopsos said, “The employee has worked at the Little Italy Restaurant in Anchorage, Alaska,
for two years. He was very upset about the angry customer.”
Gialopsos describes the employee as a seriously gifted university student who is curious about
第 3 页 共 8 页
the world. She adds that the employee also has “an amazing personality, great sense of humor and a strong work ethic.”
“This employee is also one who will not have to deal with that rude customer anymore,” added
Gialopsos.
Reached at home by reporters, Gialopsos said she is happy about the positive comments she
and her husband are receiving. By Tuesday afternoon, her Facebook posting about the incident
received more than 30,000 “Likes” and hundreds of positive ments and e-mails came from Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Namibia and the United Arab Emirates.
Gialopsos said she spent a couple of emotional days crying over the posts on the Facebook
page. She adds that many parents from around the country who have children with autism wrote to her about the incident. “Their stories broke my heart,” she said. Another comment on Facebook that she found “striking” is a woman who thanked them for hiring someone who is “differently-abled”.
Why did the owners of the restaurant receive praise
They would always put their customers first.
They had a “Do Not Deliver” list in their restaurant.
They fired a customer for hurting their autistic worker.
They promised to deliver food to their customers' house.
What made the customer angry
A. The employee acted unkindly. B. He didn’t get the food he ordered.
The owners’ daughter was very impolite. D. He was considered as an unwelcome person.
Why did Gialopsos cry when she read the posts on Facebook
Because she was moved by others’ comments.
Because children with autism were thankful to her.
Because nobody understood what she had done.
Because stories on the Facebook page hurt her feelings.
Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A restaurant guide. B. A personal diary. C. A research paper D. A news report.
C
One of the first things you will notice about Britain is that they drive on the left, and the steering wheel is on the right. This causes a strange feeling, but driving on the left is not as unusual as you might think; about a quarter of the countries in the world drive on the left. Most of them are
former British colonies like Australia, South Africa, and Ireland, but Thailand, Japan and Indonesia
also do so. This driving habit is strange to us, but there is a perfectly good reason for it: up until the late eighteenth century, everybody traveled on the left-hand side of the road because it was the best
way for mostly right-handed people to protect themselves in violent societies. So when strangers
passed on the road, they walked on the left to make sure that their sword arm was between them.
After the French Revolution in 1789, however, the French government changed sides as part of
a great social reorganisation. Later, Napoleon, the ruler of France, spread the change to the rest of Continental Europe. He did this because he was left-handed himself, and he wanted his armies to march on the right so that he could keep his left arm between himself and any enemy. From then on, any part of the world which became part of the British Empire marched on the left, and any part controlled by the French marched on the right.
After the American Revolutionary War (1775-1783), the US became independent and decided
to make traffic drive on the right in order to cut its ties with Britain. Once America became the
第 4 页 共 8 页
center of the car industry, if you wanted a good car, you bought an American-made right-hand drive vehicle. From then on many countries changed out of necessity.
Today, the EU would like Britain to be the same as the rest of Europe, but this is no longer
possible. It would cost billions of pounds to change everything round. The last European country to convert to driving on the right was Sweden in 1967, but there were far fewer cars there, and the population was much smaller.
Why did people travel on the left before the late 18th century
They could be safer from attacks.
The governments required them to do so.
There were more left-handed people back then.
They could prevent strangers passing by their left side.
For Americans, driving on the right was a way to show________.
A. the connection with France was broken B. the American Revolutionary War had ended
C. America was the center of the car industry D. the US was no longer controlled by the UK
What does the underlined phrase “convert to” in the last paragraph mean
A. Insist on. B. Give up. C. Change into. D. Disagree with
What would be the best title for the text
A. How did France influence Europe B. How did Europeans travel on the road
C. Why do British people drive on the left D. Why does the US make right-hand drive cars
D
Imagine being at a movie theater. You are watching a movie you’ve been waiting months to see.
All of a sudden, a man’s cell phone rings. Not only does the man answer it, he keeps talking on the phone for a long time. Situations like this lead many people to support cell phone blocking (屏蔽) equipment. While this is quite understandable, it’s much fairer and safer to allow people to use their cell phones in movie theaters
Using cell phones in movie theaters is a matter of culture. If you look around a theater, most
people there are not using phones and are enjoying the film they paid to see. The few bad apples are those that are rude in almost all situations. The ones that shout at waiters and cut in line. Putting in the blocking equipment would punish everyone, not just the impolite, but the well-mannered people as well.
Many theaters already have punishments in place for people who use their cell phones in a
troublesome way while in movies. At theaters I have been to, they periodically have workers come in and see if there are rude phone users. If they notice anyone breaking theater rules, they have the power to remove people from the area. That’s enough to prevent most moviegoers from using cell phones in an unacceptable way.
Another argument against putting in cellphone blocking equipment is emergency situations.
There are times when people might be getting a message that requires them to leave the theater. Some of these might be car accidents, births, deaths, or someone getting locked out etc. All of these are situations that would just require someone to immediately leave the theater.
Putting in cell phone blocking equipment would be unfair to those who know how to use their
phones politely. The answer to this problem is to make sure rules are followed, not to prevent everyone in the theater from using their cell phones.
Which word can describe the man mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. Patient. B. Impolite. C. Friendly. D. Strict.
第 5 页 共 8 页
According to the text, the bad-mannered phone users ________.
A. are rude not just in movie theater B. show no interest in the movies at all
C. welcome the blocking equipment D. are much worse than a few bad apples
In the author’s opinion, the theater rules_______.
A. are already out of date B. are proving to be unacceptable
C. can keep the theater in order D. seldom work for most people
What is the author’s attitude to cell phone blocking equipment in movie theaters
A. He pays little attention to it. B. He feels doubtful about it.
C. He is uncertain of it. D. He is against it.

Learn to Take Breaks While Studying
If one spends too much time studying, he will definitely lose concentration on his work and what he does will be in vain. He may think he is working hard. However, the fact is that he just

a routine which is the first step towards forming good habit. 38
Face the challenging task first.
Many people like to do the easiest work first to build up confidence. However, doing this may
use up your energy at even the start of any study period. Your ability will be low when it comes to
the hard part. So what happens then 39 We all may do it. We really shouldn't, though.
Therefore, bravely face the toughest task first and you may receive a big surprise.
40
As a matter of fact everybody knows the benefit of doing this. Turn them off for some time. Don’t be worried, for the world will still be there for you when you log back in. Don’t text your friends or chat with them while doing memory activities. Everything will be brilliant if you follow this rule.
They make plans ahead.
