Venus (金星) has long been one of the most misunderstood planets. It has its 1 atmosphere (大气 层). However, the atmosphere is much thicker than that of the Earth, which makes it 2 for modem scientists to study. There is 3 we still do not know about what this planet is like. However, using special machines, scientists have 4 many of the long-hidden secrets in recent years.
Venus is like the Earth' s sister planet. It is 5 the same m size and chemistry as the Earth. In other words, the materials, even the amounts, on Venus and the Earth are 6 .
Venus lies much 7 to the Sun than our planet. It has made Venus terribly hot. As the planet warmed, water 8 evaporated (蒸发) and began a cycle of global warming.
If you happen to find a way to survive the extreme heat on the surface of Venus, you will quickly notice something strange about the 9 Venus rotates(旋转) very slowly, so that a day on Venus actually lasts longer than a year. Instead of the Sun rising in the east and setting in the west, the Sun would appear to be 10 when you are on Venus. That' s interesting!

三、阅读理解(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)
【A】
In the last century, different natural disasters have robbed several cultural heritage(遗产) from us. On WeChat, some people say, “What a pity that we cannot see the damaged parts of the wonders any more.”
But people can see them in a new way---through a video game. In this game, the player can travel to one city after another and enter the buildings exactly like they are in reality, and see the wonders as they were before the fire.
Maybe digital technology(数字技术) could help protect cultural heritage better. This idea dates back to the 1990s and the necessary technology has continued to develop since then. By scanning(扫描) the ancient buildings, building 3D models, as well as measuring(测量) everything, engineers can make a copy exactly as the real one.
As computers and smart phones are popular, the digital copy has great value. First, it allows tourists to feel the cultural heritage without touching them, which helps protect them. The virtual(虚拟的) tour of Dunhuang Grottoes(敦煌石窟) is a good example of this as tourists can view the paintings without standing near them.
Second, it can make the cultural heritage more famous by spreading information about them through the internet. In 2000, a virtual tour of the Dunhuang Grottoes became very popular at the Hannover World Expo, which increased the number of foreign tourists visiting the site in the following years.
Last, it stores all the information of the cultural heritage. Even if the real ones are damaged one day, people can still know what they were like and can build a new one if wanted. Of course, however exact a model, it is not the real one.
Maybe we will have better technologies in the future, but the digital technology offers a practical way to protect cultural heritage at the moment.

Reading is the key to school success, and like any skill, it takes practice. A child learns to walk by practicing until he no longer has to think about how to put one foot in front of the other. An excellent sportsman practices until he can play quickly, correctly and without thinking. Educators (教育家) call it "automaticity (自动性)”.
A child learns to read by sounding out the letters and finding the meaning of the words. With more and more practice, he stumbles less and less. As a result, he can read by the phrases and soon by sentences. With automaticity, he doesn't have to think about the meaning of words, so that he can give all his attention to the meaning of the text.
It can begin as early as first grade. In a recent study of children in Illinois schools, Alan Rossman of Northwestern University found that automatic readers in the first grade not only read almost three times as fast as the others, but also got better results in exams.
According to Rossman, the key to automaticity is the amount of time a child spends reading, not his IQ. Any child who spends at least 3.5 to 4 hours a week reading books, magazines or newspapers will probably reach automaticity. It can happen if a child turns off TV just one night for reading at home.
You can test yourself by reading something new which is suitable for your level. If you read aloud with expression, with a sense of the meaning of the sentences, you probably are an automatic reader. If you read brokenly, one word at a time, without expression or meaning, you need more practice.

Terry Fox was born on July 28, 1958 in Canada. He was a determined little boy who never liked to miss a day of school. Fox enjoyed playing baseball and basketball very much in his free time. In secondary school he won the Athlete of the Year Award. He wanted to be a physical education teacher.
Terry Fox’s future changed in 1977 when doctors told him there was cancer in his right knee. To stop the spread of cancer, doctors amputated(截肢) most of his leg. Fox learned how to use an artificial leg, and three weeks after the operation, he was walking.
Terry Fox made a plan to raise money for cancer research by running across Canada. His goal was to raise $1 from every Canadian. People said it was a crazy idea but Terry could not be stopped. He started his running on the Atlantic coast in Newfoundland in April 1980 and planned to finish on the Pacific coast in September.
The people of Newfoundland were welcoming and generous. Fox was treated to many meals at people’s homes. A small town of 10,000 people raised $10,000. Fox ran about 45 km each day. He ran through Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. As he ran he gave speeches about cancer and how the money he collected would go to finding a cure for cancer. The 8,000 people in the town of Gravenhurst donated $14,000. By the time he ran half-way across Canada he had raised $11.4 million.
At the end of August he thought he was getting a bad cold and stopped running for a few days. Doctors said the cancer had come back and was now in his lungs. Terry went into hospital for treatment. People kept donating money. There were 24 million people in Canada in 1980. Over $24 million had been raised by February 1981. Terry had met his goal. The treatment did not cure Terry. He died on June 28, 1981. That September, the first Terry Fox Run was held in Canada. Terry Fox Runs are now held yearly in 60 countries and millions of people have taken part.
