On 21 September, the first Community Street Festival in our city was held on Redwood Street. The festival was highly successful, attracting over 10,000 people from over 20 communities. The weather was good, although it rained heavily in the morning. The performers were rather good and well received by the public.
People attending the event were mainly families. There were people of all ages. Most of them came from seven nearby communities. There were a wide variety of acts, most of which were singing and dancing. The acts appealing to children were particularly popular. The highlight of the festival was the music and dance by a group of children.
The festival was well organised. Almost all of the perfonners started and finished their acts on time. The audience enjoyed the performances. There were also many outlets serving food and drink.
The festival gave great pleasure to a large number of people and it brought together the different communities within our city. Some people said, “We are eager to participate in next year's festival.”

In Chinese, the character 觉 (jue in pinyin), means to feel, to sense and to awaken. And the Jue Festival does exactly that, bringing people together to experience something unique. Turning four years old, the annual music and arts extravaganza offers Shanghai and Beijing audiences a three-week long festival.

"There is so much inspiration and creativity here. It's about everything coming together," said Abby Lavin, the marketing and media manager of Split Works, the festival organizer. In Shanghai, the Jue Festival this year lasts from March 9 to 25, with more than 40 groups or artists performing at some 25 venues.

Art exhibitions and live musical performances are the mainstays of the festival. And Death Cab for Cutie is one of the big-name bands that will be hitting Shanghai. This Grammy Award-nominated American rock band will be performing on March 9 as the headlining act of the festival. The Taiwanese singer Summer Lei, and the Canada-based Chinese singer Qu Wanting are expected to be big hits among local audiences. "We try to balance different communities in our music lineup including electronic, folk, mainstream pop … all styles of music," said Lavin. "We choose bands that are known for their live performances, and who haven't played so often in Shanghai."

Over the years Jue has received positive feedback from its partners and audiences. This is the third year for the Shanghai Repertory Theater to be part of Jue. "The festival organizers have done a good job in bringing artists and non-traditional events here, and their profile is growing by word of mouth," Rosita Janbakhsh, the executive producer of the theater group said. "And it provides a good platform for us to see what the other artists are doing. And the festival also brings us more media attention."
